honestly, the most important skill in high school is knowing how to stretch out simple concepts that can be explained in 30 seconds into a sizable essay. I am a sophomore and already feel over school. I can't wait to get out.

OMG I just read a modest proposal in my English class like 6 weeks ago. Also for those who don't know the author was talking about poverty in Dublin and how the greedy landlords should just take their children since they take everything else, it started our unit on satire.

So that one where you were caught off guard by him talking about eating one year-olds might actually have some merit. There was a letter sent by some irish guy to the british parliament a long time ago trying to show how unequal it was. The way he explained this was by mocking the parliament by suggesting the eating of children to solve their problems. In this way, he illustrated what was really happening in a different (though maybe more severe) way.

Basically the whole thing was a satirical work roasting the British for how they treated the Irish by “proposing” that the British pay for and eat the Irish children so that the Irish have enough money to survive. It kind of backfired though, because the British thought it was hilarious and it became purely a comedy there.
