It's true that your grades don't define your worth as a person, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try hard at school. Some of the most important life skills school can teach you are communication skills, time management, developing a work ethic, and problem solving. You might not use calculus at your workplace, but the brain level up learning it gave you will help.
@Sarara14

While the teacher in the video was correct, she had to jump over a Whole Lotta "Could" exceptions. And everyone knows (or oughta) that although exceptions exist, they Do Not overpower The Rule. And The Rule is, If you work hard and smart in studying to do well in school, this is a Work Ethic that will generally carry over in college and life. Barring learning disabilities, if you don't study and Put In the effort and persistence, you will fail. It's not a difficult concept. I think she's doing her students a disservice telling them that because it's that line of thinking that will sink Most students because it's not Meant for most students. That's advice meant for a particular group of students with particular types of problems

I'm all self taught as a software engineer. I took a few classes after teaching myself things only cuz I thought it would look good on my resume as a noobie. However, after landing a few entry level positions at places like Nintendo and Microsoft, all managers I've talked to said school is dumb and not needed as long as you can show you know how to do the work. I'm now an established veteran engineer without any college degrees. I have a lot of gripes with our schooling system and how it fails non-typical students because it teaches for the mass and lots of teachers (both pre college and college professors) don't care enough about their students to work with an individual student and their specific needs.

I've been wanting to learn how to become a software engineer for a while now, any tips or resources you can share?
@DJSkunkieButt
@DJSkunkieButt 5 месяцев назад
@@Eveviwhere nothing in particular. A lot of the resources I'd point you in the direction of would just be the top results of a Google search, which is essentially how I taught myself. However, one of the things about programming is it's not quite like art where the programmer can think up an idea out of the blue and put it on paper. You generally need a "problem" to solve with a computer program in order to make one. Online learning resources and school classes tend to invent/make up an imaginary problem so that the students can start figuring out how to solve it with a program. So just going through those online courses, you'll slowly start to understand computer science concepts. As a starter language, I would suggest C# or python. Eventually move to C/C++. But also one thing to consider is if you want to get into a specialization. Ie graphics, audio, security/hacking, webdev, backend/server, embedded/firmware, mobile, game/physics engines, etc. Each specialization has an enormous amount of additional learnings that goes alongside the basic programming part of it.
@Eveviwhere

@@DJSkunkieButt That's seriously awesome, how long did it take for you to grasp programming overall and is there a way for someone to learn quicker than going to school? Is it possible to learn it quicker than 3-6 months? (Thank you if you answer this.)
@DJSkunkieButt
@DJSkunkieButt 5 месяцев назад
@@KeekeeKarin5 I already had a problem to solve, which was my main motivation for learning. So as I was learning concepts, I was integrating it into my solution program. And generally, I took the route of searching for what I need/trying to accomplish, rather than learning all computer programming concepts at once. It got the job done faster, but the program quality/design was poor/amateur/chicken scratch since I Jimmy-rigged solutions together that could've been better had I learned all other basic 101 concepts. But suffice it to say, I was building my own programs within a few months. Approaching it from the general learning route, you could absorb a 101 self learning course in the same time frame. That all being said, that was me. I was always computer oriented as a kid so it was really easy for me to pick up this stuff. I was tinkering around with computers and got into modding video games so I was already prone to absorb this stuff up easier. For others not so privy to tech (or not as much free time as I had in high school), might take a little longer, but just don't lose motivation! ❤️ I always just think of it as elementary school instructions and math for caveman WHAT IS 2 + 2 I HEARD WHAT IS 2 + 2 2 + 2 EQUAL 4 I HEARD 2 + 2 EQUAL 4 /program

If there was one thing school taught me, it's how to persevere through the monkey work. There is no such thing, in any field, where someone likes 100% aspect of their job. There is ALWAYS some trivial shallow paperwork that you might feel is completely pointless but has to be done due to some company guidelines/policies. Again, it doesn't matter if it is a white-collar job, blue-collar, medical field, streamer, STEM, art field, being a stripper, doesn't matter. And if it doesn't happen in your job somehow, it'll show up in another aspect in your life (i.e buying a house, applying for loans, filling out document work, etc. High School and college taught me a lot of useless crap, but the basic building blocks of knowing how to grit your teeth and just sit down to do the monkey work will always be valuable in the adult world.

bro I gotta say, I've been a huge fan of yours for a minute and I binge tf out of all your videos cuz they're just so relatable. This one really hit home cuz I'm currently 27 and I'm still in college and I'm far from being labeled the "best student." matter of fact I don't even study much at all cuz when I get home from being on campus for hours close to the entire day I'm just so drained that I just wanna slip right into bed. I've had that problem all my life too being raised in a Filipino household and my parents couldn't stress enough about academics being the barebone of success that I would tire myself out in order to maintain good grades, and that's another thing when it came to academics, I wasn't even a perfectionist, just did enough to pass and that's it. Even now, I wake up every morning trying to find that purpose in life, but I can't seem to find it when my grades in the classes are taking are just awful. God willing one day it'll be my time, but right now I'm balancing trying to get a diploma and earning enough to just get me by day by day. PS, keep the material coming brotha, hope I get to meet you one day 🙏🙏🙏🙏

I’m a school counselor and one of the initiatives for which I’ve pushed most is the decoupling of getting into college/university as being almost the only idea of success for what comes post-high school. I was a horrible K-12 student, who got kicked out for extended periods twice, all the while being labeled as gifted. You know, the typical “he has so much unrealized potential” while being a goof off. And then during my sophomore year of college it all just clicked because I took up reading for pleasure as a hobby. It helped me organize my thoughts which in turn gave clarity to my life and myself which led into my love of writing and intellectual pursuits. Life is messy and complicated. The more we shove kids into a uniform pathway the more we do them a disservice. Take a gap year, go to trade school, work for a year, etc. I moved to China after undergrad and taught English until I was ready to pursue my master’s. TAKE YOUR TIME. I’m not positive why I’m even writing this other than in the hope some bozo teenagers (said with all love 💚 I was one) take a step back and realize you’ll figure most of it out along the way.

If only our parents would listen to this but no, they would call it BS and still say you need good grades to succeed in life

It’s their job. Once you become a parent you will understand. What are they supposed to say? “Oh yeah son go ahead and fail school you’ll be Ight.” Listen to your parents man, raising you is not just a past time for them it’s a 24 hour shift.

you don’t need it to succeed but it’s also their job to encourage it. truth is, it doesn’t hurt to have good grades. it only benefits you.

I feel like I’m always the few that actually liked school. Yeah all the tests were stressful and BS cus they were, but my friends, favorite subjects, recess/gym, and lunch would make my day. Plus I was always the one who minded my own business and people knew me for being a good guy. Honestly I even liked college too and no I never went to any parties or tried to bang every chick on campus, but it was because it felt like high school but a little harder and I had more control of my life. Plus I made good memories during my college years too in school and outside of it too.

I remember when I was doing my GCSE's, I was really worried about one of the science ones (I'm pretty sure it was Biology) and even though I had studied a lot, I was doing terrible on the mock papers for it. Then came the day, and I sat down and opened the paper. I actually felt good about these questions?? I couldn't believe it, the exam I was the most afraid of actually had questions I knew I could answer. I think maybe a quarter of them were ones I struggled on? The exam was over and I was telling family members and teachers how great I felt about the questions, and that I have a feeling I'm going to get a good grade! Fast forward some time later, and there was something on the news about GCSE's. The examining board had completely messed up the marking for GCSE Biology (I'm pretty sure it was Biology. Basically the one I was confident about basically) and that everyone in the country would have to retake the exam. And to add insult to injury, everybody had to _pay_ to retake it too like what the hell? So I sat down to do this test again, and this time the questions were *brutal*. I recognised less than half of what was being asked 🙃

Being someone who decided to go through hell three times to get three bachelor degrees, I truly believe the way we prove if someone is smart/understands the material they learned is stupid. I'm in nursing school right now, and there are *countless* students that know their stuff, but get awful test grades. They're smart, they're REALLY smart, but they just don't do well on standardized tests. You know what they do well on? Simulation labs, showing what they have to do for the patient, acting things out, actually DOING the thing they were taught to do. Meanwhile, some of the students that get almost perfect scores on exams freeze up and cannot tell you what to do in a clinical setting. I wish we just tested people differently depending on the trade rather than standardize testing across the board. You wanna be a nurse? Okay, here's your task and all the equipment you'll need, you got 30 minutes so show us what you know.
