Good podcast as always Rich.. Moe was correct about the old SDJ, we made a lot of contacts through that publication back in the day.. Membership was cheap per year… It’s been awhile, but the first one I recall we ever seen was in 1980 with Honeybunch on the cover..lol I see these SDJ going for 75 bucks each.. That crazy is to me, heck that would have covered the SDJ cost for three and half years back in the day.. In 2003, I sold my whole collection, Stratton, Armitage, Peter Colby keep book, TL Williams and that over priced Crenshaw book , Bobby Halls books, Ed Faron, Bob Steven’s, Louis Colby signed book.. Everything for $500.00.. I read those books from cover to cover many times.. Sold them to a young man… He was thrilled to get that package.. SDJ from 1980 to 2003..
Thank you very much my friend. Yes it came out to $6 an issue. I sell reprints for $10 an issue. Those were good times with good memories of the past. That was a good deal you gave the kid.
I know he got a deal, but the young had the fever and I wanted him to learn as we did back in the day about how to read a pedigree with Stratton’s books along with the history of the breed…Imo, those three books are mandatory for educational purposes of this breed.. Other than owning the bulldogs and learning about them, which is always required..
Books are knowledge, and knowledge should be shared with those that appreciate it. I know how excited I was to get them back in day.. Great reference books.. Just like getting your first bulldog, best feeling other than my children being born..lol
I had a lot of the books you mentioned in the past, and when I got popped and went to prison in the early 90s, somebody no good took all my books. I see the Ed Faron book going for $500 in today's day. I got turned onto the breed through Richard Stratton's creative imagination and his ability to write a good story.
You need to do a show about pitbulls from bullies cause it's sickening people with bullies and blues claiming they have pits. They are messing up the breed of dogs.
I personally like the distraction that the Bully breed/breeders provide to the true APBT because when people see my dog, they don't have a CLUE what kind of dog it is. Sometimes, I'll tell people that my dog is a pitbull, and they'll try to argue with me, saying that it's not one. I'm of the mindset of letting the bully breed owners have the spotlight. That way, I can fly completely under the radar with my breed of choice, and those people will be none the wiser to what type of dog that I have.
Question SB. Do you think some of the freak biters back then could have been the results of steroid usage? Or just natural ability? Just a question, I've never believed in using the aforementioned, I always kept it like Boxing.
I don't know if the steroids would increase their bite since I don't have that experience but there's been freak biters throughout the history of the breed before steroids were ever thought of.
No I didn't have it. Raging Bull Kennels had it and some of it was bought by Livewire Kennels of Maryland but I don't know if they still have any left.
