What an honour it is to watch this full 90 minutes again, This is a classic encounter of some note ! Back in the day when it was a full contact sport, Unlike today's game, with all those ponces diving all over the place,

For those of us of a certain age it's terribly poignant seeing the likes of Billy Bremner, Peter Lorimer, Gordon Banks, Bobby Moore, Emlyn Hughes, Norman Hunter, Colin Bell - all now gone. It doesn't half make you contemplate your own mortality.

Proper grounds, proper kits, proper tackling, proper refereeing, proper football.

The first thing I notice is that nobody if faking an injury after a hard tackle. I wish they still played that way today instead of all the showmanship.

I enjoyed Norman getting Billy early in the 1st half and the little smile and moment between them as Hunter gets a talking to from the Ref as a Leeds fan loved it, also how good was Paul Madeley lol MOT.

Banksy- you absolute legend! Just in awe of his positioning, handling, reactions and controlling his area. In my opinion he is the best of all time. 🧤

Was at this game as a ten year old. Just to clarify one thing about this game. The actual attendance was 119,00. That was always etched in my memory because it was the biggest crowd at a game I’ve ever been at. Standing on two tins of McKewans export supported by my old man in the North enclosure. Was also at Hampden the very same year to see Celtic thrash Hibs 6-1 in the Scottish Cup final. Just the 106,000 at that game!

To find the full 90 minutes of matches from the 1970s that were not Cup Finals is a great achievement, hats off to you.

I've watched 14 minutes of the game and it sickens me to look at the way the game is played now! The players now day's wouldn't last a minute on the pitch

Wow! Prefer to see a game like this than the crap served up in the Premier league. Highly competitive, no diving, just two great sets of players getting stuck in. That to me is real football! What a great set of footballers Moore, Bremner Banks, Lorimer, Ball, Hughes, Madeley, Hunter, Law

Unfortunately, for a Scot, entertaining though it is, it just shows how tactically naive Scotland were in the 70s - punting hopeful long balls into the England box more often than not instead of keeping possession in the way England do. And we didn't have a tall target man here!

No goalie gloves! Intense football! 2 minutes left and a goal kick - Banks took it right away without wasting time.

Remember when all countries wore their own coloured kit - and only changed when they played away because it clashed with the home team? What do we have now? Last week England played in all blue. At home. Does it matter? Well, it matters enough for someone to change a hundred year old tradition...because they can.

Great days loved it when i was a kid the crowds all standing packed to the rafters you could hardly breathe let alone see 134000 unreal.

So much more physical back then, much tougher players.

This fixture is so intense for the fans on both sides but nearly all those player on the field we're mates. That was good to see.

I noticed a player was injured off the pitch and the commentator said "the game must go on". That's so unlike these days when the game stops if a player has a broken fingernail.

I shall never forget the joy of the magnificence of football during this era in time. I remember being on the edge of my seat and my mum and dad urging England to smash that ball right into the back of the old net.

Alan Ball never gets the credit he deserves …..a true great and a player that Grahame Souness admitted he never got anywhere near when he played against him and make no mistake Souness was a great player too ….

A 'relatively' small crowd of 119,000 by the standards of the past there that day. My God, Scotland v England crowds at Hampden Park, Glasgow were amongst the biggest in the world at that time. Golden days, indeed...

There was something very special about that era, funny how they used to warm up!

Denis Law talking about Bremners level of commitment. They’re on international duty and on a day off, they would visit the local primary schools and do a bit of coaching, sign autographs etc and play a fifteen minute each way game. So Bremner is on one side and Law on the other and they always made sure it was a draw, so none of the kids would be disappointed. Near the end, somebody punted the ball upfield and this little boy about eight years old runs after it and is heading for goal, Bremner runs after him and chops the legs from under him. The little kid does two somersaults, lands on his back and is winded. While the teachers are trying to revive him, Law grabs Bremner and asks him why the hell he done that. Bremner, completely serious said ‘He was right through on the keeper.’

Great to see Colin Bell in his rightful 8 shirt. He was my first football hero. A great talent cut short.

This is the real football we all loved, played by real men !! This was the best era of football!! Just hearing names like, Banks, Moore, Ball, Chivers, Hughes, Meadley, Brenner, Lorimer, Gemmell, Law, McCarry, Hartford gave me goose bumps back then as a 12 year old!!

What an amazing match! I watched it as though it was live. Phenomenal players, especially the defenders ... Moncur - both goal keepers, and perhaps the greatest footballer England had ever produced .. the England Captain, Bobby Moore ( sadly taken from us so soon). Excellent full match upload - but we'd be happy to watch it in the original 4:3 - please don't stretch it. As others have said - 'proper football' - not the overpaid, egotistical, vainglorious, tattooed, wankers we have 'today'.

Saw this match as a 12-year old kid in 1972. Malaya then did not have coloured TV and we watched the International Weekend on Sundays.

The good days are back used to watch them in 70 they were the days and Wales

What players both sides had and the midfield battles with Hartford, Gemmell and Bremner on Bell, Hunter and Storey and especially on Bally. Proper football when men were men .Some good performances but how impressive was Mcfarland. I saw him play every week for Derby but he just stood out in this game. Thanks for finding this.

This game took place a few days after Rangers won the Cup Winners Cup in Barcelona. I remember seeing some Rangers fans still wearing sombreros, having just got back from Spain

Oh my God, Dennis Law! Kids these days have no idea what a footballer he was. he had everything, including always playing with a smile on his face (except after one goal back in 1974) Bobby Moore - a man's man, would only take the knee before his queen, Alan Ball - why did Everton ever let him go? Billy Bremner... Lou Macari. There was Colin Bell, the mighty Colin Bell! Todays footballers pale to these giants.

I was at the match in the Rangers end. Those fans were just back from the battle in Barcelona. As England fans we cheered the goal and it was like shouting in church.

Was born that August, but most of these were still playing or managing when I became aware, and then mad about football - only ones missing seem to be Roy Race and Blackie Gray

Scotland had some good teams in the 70s and 80s. You do have to wonder whether the founding of the Premier League harmed the Scottish national team? Scots were preeminent in big English clubs back then.

Not the same pace of today’s player’s but way harder.

This was England on the verge of being pretty lousy for almost ten years, during which they failed to qualify for two consecutive World Cups ('74 and '78). The Scotland team are full of big, very famous names but I don't remember the no. 2 , John Brownlie, at all. Had to look him up. Played for Hibs and then Newcastle apparently, and only made 7 international appearances.

A great match, real venom! 130,000 Scots screaming for English blood. Donachie and Gemmill were superb and Hunter too although his tackles were absolutely brutal.

How brilliant was Norman Hunter in this match ? I was only aware of his reputation as a 'clogging' centre half till I saw this. Yet here he displayed huge talent. Excellent passing, great anticipation and awareness off the ball, unbelievable work rate, good technique. What an eye-opener. Glad I saw this. Excellent example of how football was played 'when I was a lad'....lol

circa 1972 when music was about David Cassidy,Middle of the Road,Young Michael Jackson and his brothers,Dawn,Wings.And when it was football-wise,the old First and 2nd Divisions.

Jeez those guys played together for their clubs but come the home Internationals were kicking lumps out of each other. Suprised no one sent off or badly injured 😮

Note Alan Ball & Denis Law went off the field after the game after a hug and arm around each others shoulders. Best of pals really, as many of them of course were playing in the same league and often teams the rest of the year.

My dad lifted me over for the 1970 game, I really don't remember much I was 7.

Interesting to hear Jimmy Hill adding commentary with Brian Moore. Hill was with the BBC (Match of the Day) Moore was with ITV (The Big Match & On the Ball)

These guys were not constantly diving, complaining or needing a rest after running for 20 seconds, used a much heavier ball and they earned £70/week. What a bunch of dopes! :)

This game is the greatest example of how football should be played. After 2000, the game got very crappy (mostly because of player’s managers, bosman case, and the lots of money that were involved).

What a good match!.. These players yes, they played with all their hearts..

Tackling was brutal, almost GBH. No wounder once you got the ball you got rid of it to avoid a broken limb. And once the players career was over, for most, no money and lucky to be a pub landlord. All so different now.

Interesting fact..the goalposts at Hampden were square faced.
