Hello folks!
A very warm welcome back to What’s For Tea :) for tea tonight I’ll be making some delicious haggis, needs & tattle pies :)
Haggis, Neeps (turnip or swede) and tatties (potatoes) is such a classic Scottish dish that it really doesn’t need much explaining, and I’m sure everyone has heard of it! But tonight I’ll be making it into a pie! They turned out wonderful and something I’ll definitely be making again!
Everything I used will be mentioned below incase you want to make them yourself. Thanks for stopping by,
-Cheryl x
____________________________________________________________________
Makes 4 pies
Around 400g/14oz (or four slices) Haggis
4 Good sized white potatoes (1 per person)
500g/17oz Turnip or swede
1 Sheet of puff pastry (around 350g/12oz)
A handful of grated cheddar (or cheese of your choice)
A couple of knobs of butter
Salt & white pepper to taste

We celebrated Burns night here in Denmark the proper way. I made haggis, neeps and tatties with whisky-cream sauce and afterwards we enjoyed a dram in my beautiful “Bonnie Prince-Jacobyte” glasses. It was brilliant!

Those pies look delicious and what a great idea. Nearly everything is better wrapped in pastry! Although I haven’t got a Scottish bone in my body, Burns Night is my mother’s birthday (as of Saturday, she’s 93 years young) so we always have haggis on the 25th. I cooked the vegetarian version for mum. Down on the south coast of England, only veggie was left when I popped into the supermarket, but it was still very tasty - a bit like an ultra savoury nut roast with lots of barley. So here’s to all the lassies and laddies!!

Awesomeness! I actually have a vegetarian Haggis (blasphemy, I know LOL!) over at a friend's freezer, as we only had a small group for Burns Night, so we didn't need both versions cooked. I'm not sure if we'll do individual or just one, big pie - I'll have to run that past them. This recipe will be *a lot* easier than my "destroy the whole kitchen" adventure with my first go-round. 😅

Did you make the vegetarian haggis? I am not really fond of haggis at all, but the potatoes and turnips are something I can probably seriously survive on alone if I had to. Lol. I love turnips with anything really. But I'm intrigued by the vegetarian haggis. Do you have a recipe or did you just find one through Google? :)

I had it 3 times while I was and each place I had it was just do delicious! The only way I can get haggis is if I buy it in a can from Amazon. I want to try it but not sure it would be like the real thing.

Tinned haggis is a weak imitation. Try looking for a Caledonian society [or Royal Scottish Country Dance Society branch :) ] and you might get hooked up. We had a guy who would make it-- too many years ago-- for our Burns Night. Best gravy is a dram of malt, though, so mayhap I'm a bit astray...

I just priced Haggis made by a Scottish butcher here in Sydney, Australia, and it's about $AU39.00 (about £20.00) per kg. The photo on his website looks very similar to Scott Rea's Haggis, linked in my other comment below. Never having tasted Haggis in my life, (even though I'm part Scottish on my father's side), I'd love to try it, but at about $AU10.00 (£5.07) per pie, the cost of making it is a little bit out of my league, I'm afraid.

And in the US swede is celery’s root bulb...is this the same thing? I’m just curious...I love all root vegetables and they’re super healthy. This recipe is so lovely! (P.S. TheRenaissanceman65 do you know why that is, do you have a particular illness that affects lungs in your sheep in the us? In Norway our food restrictions from the government are some of the strictest in the world, but nothing against lungs. We also have a traditional dish made from lungs directly translated as lung mash🥴 ( won’t touch the stuff myself..) I also wonder why there are precautions against raw eggs in the us, is it because of salmonella? We use raw eggs in lots of things as salmonella is a very rare thing in eggs over here.
