Scottish Haggis Pie, Millionaire Shortbread - Traditional Burn's Supper recipes! And how I wear a Scottish sash or scarf. Do you celebrate Burn's Night? Are you a Scot abroad? Ever been to a Burn's Night event?
For the Haggis Pie I used tinned haggis, a mixture of carrot/kohlrabi (turnip is difficult to find here in Copenhagen) and then a layer of mashed potato.
The Selkirk Grace: Some hae meat and canna eat,
And some wad eat that want it,
But we hae meat and we can eat,
Sae let the Lord be Thanket!

Absolutely adore the way you have styled your tartan scarf Diane! Chic indeed! Funny, I think we embrace our roots far more when we are ex-pats compared to when we live in our homeland... maybe it just brings us a bit closer to the home that we have left behind??? So I guess we find many little traditions to hold onto to keep the flame burning. :) I can't get my "stomach" around haggis! LOL! I grew up with my Mediterranean mum making something very similar with sheep stomach, intestines, kidneys.. the works!... Never could stand it.... must have been the smell while it was cooking despite all the herbs and spices she would throw in. And this concoction would cook for hours!!!!! So I have an enormous amount of respect for your kids eating haggis! I would prefer the shortbread dessert - Mòran taing Diane! :) (probably mucked up that attempt at Scottish - but that was my contribution in remembrance of the Scot who wrote our New Years Eve chant!) Helen x

Oooooooooo Yes! She did!! I completely forgot about that! Not often, thank goodness! No way I would touch it though! Can't believe you did Diane!! :) I couldn't understand "WHY?" they felt it necessary to use such odd bits in their cooking... must be something to do with growing up in war torn Europe when food was scarce, families large and "nothing could go to waste"..... How time has changed! What really amuses me now is how these "parts" are delicacies on a menu! lol!!

Made the haggis pie and the shortbread again last night for Burns Night. Thanks for these recipes , Diane - it’s great to be able to return to these time and again. I looked up how to make dulce de Leche myself from a tin of condensed milk. You can make it in the instant pot, takes about an hour and no exploding tins! You can just empty the tin and some water/sodium bicarbonate into a bowl stood in some water. Job done! We really enjoyed it. Hope you had a lovely Burns Night too. X

What a wonderful video! My mother's side is Scottish, Clan Ross, so this is wonderful! I see you have little bagpipes on your sink too! If my family would eat meat, I would make this in a heartbeat! I may anyway - at DD12 and DS14's middle school, there is a festival called International Night. Usually I just help and don't bring much, but this year, if I can find a tin of haggis, I may make this! Have a wonderful day!

Like you Diane, we never celebrated Burns Night when I was young. However, I still remember the humiliation when, as an eight year-old, I was quizzed by my teacher about the national dish of Scotland and I answered porridge. I won’t repeat his response but I quickly replied that I’d never tasted haggis but have porridge everyday for breakfast and I bet all the other kids do too!

I can attest to the kindness of Scottish people. In visiting beautiful Scotland periodically for years due to work, I had occasion many times to receive kindness and totally unexpected *generosity* from total strangers when facing unforeseen small difficulties. They would help without being asked and then strenuously refuse payment. These events are now little precious stories that I share with my children.

Have a great Burn's Night. Great to see you adapting the traditions and somewhat shocked that you didn't celebrate this in your childhood. I'm a year younger than you and have lived all over Scotland, this will be my first Burn's Night without haggis, due to a combination of having been snowed in and having had the flu. Making venison stew as a substitute as i watched you make your pie. We call your neep substitute swede here. Kolrabi is quite different over here. I haven't seen a real turnip in around 30 years. Change in farming practices and Anglification of shopping due to big supermarkets taking over. I'm off to read Tam o' Shanter, my annual tradition and a great memory from hearing it first in primary 3.

Fun! I was given a generous tower of treats for Christmas that I've only recently opened. In it are little wrapped sweets called millionaires(shortbread carmel chocolate and nut) and I loved them but had no idea they were inspired by a dessert. Amazing how you can live 55 years not having heard of something and then come across it twice within a few days! Your Nessie made me chuckle. You are sunshine on a cold dark day!

Hi Diane. Forgot it was Burns Night til saw your post. My husband is an eighth Scottish so, of course, considers himself Scottish, going out to buy haggis presently. Totally off script ie not Scottish at all, but your deconstructed millionaire's shortbread would probably go really well with the bananas you have on your window sill, like banoffee pie. Thsnk you for your posts, love the Jedi Mind Trick.

A most enjoyable video! My grandmother, who was Scots-Irish, used to recite that same prayer to us, growing up in Ontario, Canada. Kohlrabi in these parts is pale green with weird tendrils/branches growing upwards from the sides. It always looked like little invading Martians to me, and I've yet to try it.😉

I gained two pounds just watching you eat that dessert! LOL Another way to have fun in the dreary winter....go you! I've only known two Scots: my cousin married a Scot who came to America with his mom. She was supposed to come here on the Titanic, but missed the boat....for real. Anyway, they were the two sweetest people and so kind. You are right about that! They are both gone now. So I had a nice time remembering them during the video. HeeHee, my husband laughed at your Vit D. We got a good laugh at the "boil for six weeks." And you say it with such a "straight face." You remind me a little of Carol Burnett. Thanks again.

Turnips are different from rutabaga (US) aka swede (UK). We have both in our natural food coop in midwest of USA. Hardly used by people I know but available. Also, we just had a discussion on facebook that tartans are plaids but not all plaids are tartans. Thanks for millionaire shortbread. Must try this. Think I will try tonight. Thanks for showing more about scarves and brooches! Is the tartan you're wearing that of your own clan? (Assuming you have one; pardon if it's not an appropriate question! I got very into perusing some sort of online catalog of the official registry for tartans several years ago. I love fiber arts so I found it fascinating!) As for haggis, not sure I've had it! Do you suppose I'd enjoy it if I like things like cow's liver and onions, Jewish-style chopped liver, and chicken hearts rodizio-style? As for lamb meat, I like it 80% of the time, goat I liked each time I've had it. I'm really not sure I've had mutton, however. 🤔

A turnip and a rutabaga are two different things. In America a turnip is a turnip--it is small and white with a bit of purple coloring on the skin and has an opaque quality and is very tender and very white when it is cooked. A rutabaga looks similar to a turnip but is much larger and more yellow in color, and somewhat more dense in texture and has a much stronger taste than a turnip when it is cooked. According to Google it is a cross between a turnip and a cabbage, and is also called swede or neep. I think that you are using a rutabaga, it is much to large and dull in color to be a turnip.
@DianeinDenmark
@DianeinDenmark 6 лет назад
Yes, as I said, I used Danish kålrabi (cross between turnip/cabbage) mixed with carrot for extra sweetness because I couldn't get turnip here.
@lorrainef.3213

Ahhh. Here in the US, we have turnips, rutabagas, and kohlrabi. It looks like rutabagas are also called swedes and kalrabi. The kohlrabi is a round, pale green, martian-looking kind of thing and is very like a radish. I too thought you were calling that rutabaga (danish kalrabi) a kohlrabi. I think a kohlrabi is a glaskal in Danish?

Lorraine F. I've never seen a kohlrabi in the supermarket in my area, nor heard of them before. I thought Diane said it was the Danish word for turnip, didn't realize she was saying it was something completely different. I'll have to keep my eyes open and give them a try if I ever see them in my area. Maybe it will be a vegetable my husband will actually eat.
@lorrainef.3213

They're really good as raw, cold, crisp slices. Someone I know slices them and keeps them in a jar of water in the fridge ready for salads and snacking. Maybe you'd have better luck finding them at farmer's markets and such. I can't remember what stores I've seen them at but I'm in Chicago so it could have been anywhere - Whole Foods, Mariano's, Fresh Farms, Jewel. I don't think it was Trader Joe's or Aldi's....
