The fact that undertaker went to grab Vince to explain himself to Bret really shows he was truly a leader. No one else at that time would have the balls to do that.

Bret taught me a great lesson, never be loyal to anyone that isn't family, especially companies.

Amazing documentary my man! I was there that night. I'll never forget it. My father bought me tickets because I had good grades at school (I was in in Primary school 3rd grade at that time). I've never seen my father that pissed after the main event (we're from Montreal, Canada so of course we were cheering for Bret). My father was so pissed. I had no idea what was going on lol. Our whole row were screaming and shouting and talking to each others. R.I.P Pop love you and miss you everyday

The fact that Mick Foley, Undertaker, Ken Shamrock, Vader, as well as all the others took Bret’s side over McMahon shows not only that they are loyal, stand-up friends with Bret Hart, it also shows how much respect they sincerely had for Bret. They might all seem like just characters in a wrestling organization, but we have to remember that they were literally standing up to their actual boss; a boss who obviously had the power to do real damage towards ending or sabotaging their careers. I suppose the one “decent” thing Vince McMahon did was that he took the punishment Bret Hard served up and didn’t file any criminal charges or pursue any legal civil action against Bret Hart. I guess he was man enough to know that he had it coming; that he deserved it- and he accepted it and left it at that. Whenever Bret Hart has talked about this; even many years afterwards, it is obvious that this event really had a significant impact on him. I feel bad for Bret Hart, and this particular video did an amazing job (probably the best) at covering the entire backstory and providing much needed; often left out context to how big of a deal this really was and what all had led up to it. Bret Hart is one of those types of men who has integrity, loyalty, and a proper functioning moral compass. Sadly, he believed and trusted that he was dealing with like minded individuals; sadly he wasn’t

I initially rolled my eyes upon seeing the thumbnail. “Ugh, another Montreal Screwjob video.” Then I pressed play, and I wasn’t disappointed. The depth to which the documentary went is unbelievable.

Honestly, this in-depth doc makes me feel even more sorry for Brett than I did. He truly got screwed. He showed loyalty and looked for solutions but was denied at every turn. He was treated very badly.

Knowing Brett absolutely rocked Vince makes me feel a tiny bit better. I despise Vince.

I don't post comments very often. I feel almost compelled to state this: this is hands-down one of the best made, most thoroughly researched, and most thoughtfully created documentaries of the Montreal Screwjob I have seen to date. This one is really incredible and a must-watch for anyone interested in professional wrestling folklore. Excellent work, Cultaholic, excellent work!

I can proudly say I witnessed it all. The night when Bret shoved McMahon and ranted about injustice after injustice, that was the beginning of the attitude era! The best era in the history of professional wrestling.

The ending was awesome. You stated it really well. All those heated matches and real life drama between HBK and Bret, they were both out of the WWF within 4 months of each other. What fascinates me was that, them being out of the spotlight, paved the way for WWF to get to to the top if the wrestling business. Drama really hinders growth. The same is true with how WCW lost it. Too much backstage drama.

Nice hearing that Foley and Calloway had Bret's back. Exactly what I expect of the nicest guys in the WWF.

Just imagining all the shouting and heat backstage that night, from Bret's wife fuming at Shawn and Hunter to Undertaker assuming his power to force Vince to explain himself, it's a miracle nobody was seriously injured by the end of it all.

With this much backstory you really feel for Bret, constantly pushed into situations he didn’t want to be in that he did anyway to the best of his incredible ability and still painted as the bad guy who wouldn’t do business after the fact. The biggest moment that shows his character is going and thanking Shawn for the match afterwards despite knowing he’d been in on it, a complete professional in spite of everything.

I am surprised even after all this time, all the evidence shown and told from everyone involved that there are people who still take Vince/Shawn's side. Vince is the one who gave Bret that contract, he who put himself in financial peril, he who put in the creative control clause in that said contract, he who chose to breach the contract multiple times, he who put the belt on Bret and he who chose to coddle a man child in HBK who had only ever caused him problems for years. Bret did what any of us with a spine would have done in the same situation and stood up for himself the only way he could. Bret never wanted to leave, he was a loyal company man wrestling there longer than HBK or Taker, he was willing to take a pay cut and contractual changes all of which Vince disagreed to. It was Shawn who chose to be difficult and refused to be a team player countless times to countless people, he who wanted to leave to be with his friends in WCW, he who put Vince in numerous needlessly bad situations (Vader, "losing his smile", getting beaten up in a bar picking a fight with a vet and etc.). Had HBK chose to not be a disrespectful man child Bret would have gladly dropped it to him despite everything above. For everything to work in the ring you need trust and respect with who you work with and HBK blatantly disregarded both so Bret acted accordingly. Anyone who thinks HBK was in the morally right side of this I ask you this. If so why was Undertaker standing behind the curtain of the HBK VS Austin match at WM14 with his fists taped?

While it's always vague when the Attitude era began. There's no mistake, Survivor Series 97 was the day The New Generation was finished.

When this took place, I was watching WCW more because of the NWO angle and didn't think much of it at the time. I've come to love the different ways this story has been told over the years and this is, by far, the best telling of it I've heard. Thanks for taking the time to put this together for us.

That 20 year WWF contract was INSANE and so legendary!!! Bret pulled off a unicorn with Vince, you see why later Vince felt like a idiot and didn’t want to honor it. Business wise he did the one thing they always tell you not to do…fall into a no way out situation and start offering the best deals nobody has ever heard. It’s a sad but had Vince honored his side, Bret wouldn’t had left. He was as loyal as they come…hate him or love him, Bret kept his word up to what happened in Montreal. Sometimes I wished history was different and that Vince kept his word then none of this would had happened. Bret would had left on good terms and a nice ending to it all. You see though? Few if any ever get a beautiful ending in life…jealousy, greed and lies mess up everything in the end.

This documentary is magnificent, I can't imagine how many hours the script may have taken, so much research and details. Thanks Cultaholic!

You can still feel Bret's pain when ever he talks about this. wwe really left an unforgettable dent on the Hart family.

I think everyone i knew at the time saw Brett Hart as the Hero. My Fav was his 1st RoyalRumble where Jesse Ventura kept saying ' And Brett Hart is still in there " Brett Hard & Ted Dibiase were legends in those early RR's

It's honestly interesting to first hear about left out details like practically the majority of the locker room being rightfully pissed with Vince and siding with Bret including Undertaker (where his anger was actually completely justified as the 'locker room leader'). Awesome work on the documentary.

Dude LITERALLY took over pro wrestling and reigns supreme to this day...Bischoff won the battles early on but damn did Vince ever come out on top and win the war... That would suck having to then go work under Vince

Brett always tried to go back to Vince because he loved WWF (E) and it wasn't ever about money. So it was always love and loyalty from him, typically from the Harts and that's how they were rewarded. A dead brother who was not protected enough from his stunt and a backstab from a father figure. I may have a lot of admiration for Vince cunning business man nature, this is an unforgivable treacherous and heartless behavior. Completely honorless

So if I'm hearing this right: Bret's contract that he signed in 1996 would consist of being a talent from 1997-2000 earning $5 million, then front office from 2001-2008 earning $500k a year and then sitting at home as a statue earning $250k per year for the rest. Wow. We've all heard the endless stuff about Montreal but THIS is spectacular stuff. A+ work.

Excellent job on putting this together. It really gives an alternative view into the infamous Montreal Screw Job. In that sense, it wasn't Bret screwed Bret as we've all come to know/hear, but rather Vince screwed Bret (hence the poor decision on his part)

This is the greatest version of the screw job ever told. I even learned new things about this 25 year old event by watching. Amazing. Even the editing made me feel like you had actual footage of these events. GOAT

It's a story most of us have heard 1000 times yet this kept me absolutely gripped throughout. I initially put it on as background fodder but couldn't really turn away. Sam's delivery of these docs are absolutely superb and completely engaging. Brilliant work from everyone involved. You all deserve so much with the work you put out. Love that you can do this and then have the heads up or squid game challenges. Both absolutely brilliant.t but in completely contrasting ways.

as I was cleaning up from working extremely late tonight. I had RU-vid playing for well over 2 hours beyond what i had originally played. I just let it go down its up next rabbit hole when this documentary started. It had been playing for a while and i hadnt really been listening until something about the ultimate warrior caught my attention. I then restarted to listen to the entire documentary from the beginning. Not knowing i was starting an hour plus documentary that despite starting it over from the beginning after 1am this piece absolutely REFUSED to let me turn it off! Its 245am central time! I'm going to hate life tomorrow bit DAMN was this an EPICALLY well done piece of wrestling history! Bravo!

This Documentary was so much more than just Montreal! It is literally the most in depth showing of Pro Wrestling's inner working during this industries defining moment, The "Monday Night War". Quoting Sting at the HOF induction: "All the stuff that happens backstage...that's where the money is!"

Freaking thank you for putting this together and really trying to hit everything that led up to the screwjob. For a story that's been told over and over and then over again. You made it fresh and still informative. Seriously loved this a job extremely well done!!!!

When a much younger version of me was sitting at home watching it all happen on TV little did I know I'd still be fascinated by all of this more than 25 years later. Great documentary! I have a feeling wrestling fans will still be talking about this in 100 years time.

I’m with some of the other comments… RU-vid was playing in the background & I literally audibly groaned & thought “Another Screwjob documentary!” But 2 mins in, I was hooked. So much specific detail & love how you start at the end & bring it all full circle. AMAZING JOB!

What Bret Hart did was a heroic thing and really for all the boys in the back. People and casual fans don't realize Vince McMahon or anyone else in charge of WWE is cold blooded as fuck. If Bret was not as popular, charismatic, or influential as he is they would have written him off WWE with no explanation. Even a star like Kamala they fed to sharks. Bret Hart was a hero backstage because he stood against the machine. He was a great hero to undertaker, mick foley, mark henry, the rock, list goes on, and many others. He stood against the clique and establishment, and bullshit other wrestlers were going through. He wasn't a mark. Oh no, he cared about putting a good product out for the fans, and making sure the boys sacrificing their lives got taken care of. If you think ill of Bret and listen to the hee haws of Scott Hall, just look at kamala's shoot interviews to see how "great" retired WWE wrestlers get treated when they leave. And all the b.s. they go through when they are in the company.

I am brand new to wrestling, never heard of this incident before (I was a child and my family never really followed sports). I don't know how I got here and I only have a dim idea of what's going on, but it's fascinating! I feel like I'm in front of a corkboard trying to sort everything out.

The Smith vs Michaels result made me sick to my stomach hearing that, the Smith win would’ve been an awesome moment for his sister, and have no hit to the storyline, but of course Vince is a con artist

Now I am even more convinced that Bret was genuinely a nice guy and loyal towards the company.. Vince and Shawn were the villains. I can completely understand why it took so long for Bret to get over after what had happened to him.. for others it Is just easy to lambast Bret for not getting over the incidence ... The best there was, the best there is and the best there ever will be ❤️

Bret’s story is he could hear Vince yelling to ring the bell. When Shawn is about to put Bret in the sharpshooter the Ref tells the cameras to get ready. The Ref also signals to ring the bell immediately. Either the Ref was in on it or everyone was in on it including Shawn and Bret.

This was one of the “screw jobs” that was at a high level and out in the open planned at the last minute. Something tells me in this business, especially back in the day there were more than several “screw jobs” with many wrestlers that the public never knew about ,protected by kayfabe

A true gold standard for a documentary that masterfully immerses the viewer into the minds of the people involved and drives home not just how major the event was, but how wild pro wrestling's hidden reality can be just as its surface entertainment can and how the two often blend together from that. A must-watch for wrestling fans.

After watching this documentary, I'm completely content now in just never talking about or hearing this story again. It's been beaten into the mud for years and it's finally taken us decades to paint at least a clearer picture about what happened.

You know, I had somehow missed this video from you boys forever but as a fan of so many sporting RU-vid channels this kind of deep dive rewind reminds me so much of the special on LeBron James winning a title in Cleveland that Secret Base did a while back. That's no bad thing, I love the framework of taking someone to a place in time who may need context at every turn. It's a brilliant piece of work.

As much of a Shawn fan I was, growing up watching his 2nd run in the 2000's was just amazing to experience. Seeing him main event WM 23 against6 John Cena was crazy. But even with all that, I still think Bret is the better Human being.

Bret and Austin at Wrestlemania 13 is still the greatest wrestling match I have ever seen.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this is the most interesting story in the history off pro wrestling. This entire thing,from start to finnish could be turned into a really good tv show.

Looking back, it’s crazy what a huge gamble the screwjob was for WWF. Obviously it could have gone south very quickly in the moment. It could have caused the remaining fans to turn to WCW but instead it brought fans in by how provocative it was and how much real heat it got on Michaels and the newly created “Mr McMahon” character. (Even Bret punching Vince managed to work in WWF’s favor somehow.) It paved the way for Austin’s rise but when they planned it they still weren’t sure how well or how long Austin would be able to wrestle after his injury. If it turns out Austin couldn’t wrestle very well or had his injury got aggravated somehow we could be looking at a very different trajectory for the company

A well done documentary that thoroughly explored what bubbled up to The Montreal Screwjob incident. As someone who had a basic idea of what had happened, I feel like I don’t really need to go anywhere else to get further information as this covered basically everything.

As someone who grew up absolutely loving WWF and going to see it live every chance I got, I didn't know about any of this because it took place several years after I stopped watching. Undertaker was fairly new when I stopped watching wrestling. The amount of stuff I missed blows me away!

Now this is how the story was supposed to be told. Well done man your channel definitely will pass other wrestling channels because of the quality of work you put out. Love it man! EDIT: now I realize this channel has a group of great writers and hosts. One of my fav wrestling channels 💯💯💯💯🔥
