Scrubs and sexism: where are the women leaders in Medicine?
This discussion was part of the Women in STEM Festival at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge: a national conference exploring the barriers and opportunities facing women in science studies and careers.
This fantastic session highlighted the extent of sexual harassment being endured by women in medical careers - over 90% of female doctors report having experienced it - yet only 10% of NHS trusts have policies around sexual harassment in the workplace. Panellists call for workplace equality training to break patterns of discrimination and urge women to remember that they are not the problem.
The panel included:
Chair: Professor Charlotte Summers, Professor of Intensive Care Medicine, Cambridge and Director of the Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Heart & Lung Research Institute
Professor Nita Forouhi - Professor of Population Health and Nutrition, University of Cambridge. Programme leader of the nutritional epidemiology programme of the university’s Epidemiology Unit. Honorary consultant public health physician with Public Health England
Dr Chelcie Jewitt - junior doctor specialising in emergency medicine. Co-founder, Survivors in Scrubs
Dr Nancy M. Holekamp - vitreoretinal surgeon. Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri 2009 - 2020 and currently serves as Visiting Professor at Roche in Basel, Switzerland. Co-founder of Women in Retina network and currently running Women in Retina Clinical Trials incubator to put more women on the path to becoming principal investigators, podium speakers, first authors and professors
