Fincher... meet Nicki. Enjoy!

Great reaction Nicki and congrats for your fist time reaction on cam it was amazing, i love this movie it´s a masterpiece of cinema, the dialogue is sharp, the performances immaculate, and the twists continually surprising. There’s much about the film that stands the test of time. There are some fun-facts about it Brad Pitt refused to make the movie if studio executives changed the ending, he came up with the movie’s ending. He thought that Mills should be the one to kill John Doe, which would give the movie a somber, realistic ending without the big, satisfying moment of retribution that most of these movies have. Initially, executives at New Line Cinema despised this ending, and tried to have it changed. However, Pitt threatened not to do the movie if they changed the ending, and they were forced to relent. Leland Orser went to extreme lengths to prepare for the interrogation scene. In order to nail his intensity in the interrogation scene, Leland Orser did rapid breathing between takes to saturate his body with oxygen and allow him to hyperventilate at will. He also deprived himself of sleep for a few days before shooting the scene, so that he’d look suitably disoriented. David Fincher’s vision for this movie was to essentially make a black-and-white movie in color. He brought on cinematographer Darius Khondji who at the time, was known for shooting perfume commercials to pull off this effect. The signature gloomy look of this film was mainly achieved with a chemical process called “bleach bypass.” Plus, the silver was left in the film stock, which added to the darkness of each shot. Brad Pitt really did injure his warm while filming, so his cast was real and had to written into the movie. Morgan Freeman’s son Alfonso, had a brief cameo as a fingerprint tech. While shooting the gluttony scene, the production poured seven crates of cockroaches all over the set. Reportedly, one of them even crawled in actor Bob Mack’s underwear. The sloth victim Victor was played an actual actor, Michael Reid MacKay, who weighed only 90 pounds during filming. Due to his incredibly slender physique, he’s played roles of creatures/ghosts/monsters in The Monster Squad, Insidious: Chapter 3. During the Greed scene, actor Gene Borkan was covered in so much fake blood that he got stuck to the floor. Despite being a movie about a brutal serial killer, only one kill is seen on screen, when Mills shoots John Doe at the very end. Ironically, 6 years after the movie was released the Patriot Act gave legal permission for library records to be pulled, which this movie made a big deal about being very illegal in 1995. Keep up the good work, im hoping to see more reactions from you on this channel.

"What's in the box?" Fun Fact: When filming the "sloth" victim scene, the SWAT officers were NOT told that the victim was still alive. When the victim coughs and scares the SWAT officers, that reaction is real. Location Location Fact: The diner that Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow) meet at is the same diner that Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke meet at in Training Day (2001). In fact, they meet in the same booth. It's the Quality Coffee Shop in downtown LA. Standing Together Fact: The ending in the movie is the ending in the original draft of the screenplay that the actors and director had signed on to. Producer Arnold Kopelson had it re-written, and the ending was changed to John Doe (Kevin Spacey) kidnapping Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow), with Mills and Somerset racing to save her life. When David Fincher, Brad Pitt, and Morgan Freeman read the new ending, they all demanded that the original ending be put back in or they wouldn't do the movie. Art Over Ego Fact: The producers intended that Kevin Spacey should receive top billing at the start of the movie, but he insisted that his name not appear in the opening credits, so as to surprise the audience with the identity of the killer. To compensate, he is listed twice in the closing credits, once before the credits start rolling and once in the rolling credits in order of appearance. Another advantage from Spacey's point of view, as he saw it, was that he was excluded from the film's marketing during its release, meaning he didn't have to make any public appearances or do any interviews.
@giggitygiggity8391
@giggitygiggity8391 8 месяцев назад
Well, that's partially correct. The Usual Suspects came out before Se7en and Kevin Spacey was concerned that people would suspect he was the killer in Se7en because (spoiler alert) that was the big reveal in The Usual Suspects. That was the primary reason for him not being mentioned prior to the film's release.

Great reaction! Be sure to check out Fincher's Zodiacl (2007) with Robert Downey Jr., Jake Gyllenhaal, and Mark Ruffalo. Also, Fincher's The Game (1997) with Michael Douglas is an excellent thriller that most people have never heard of but is generally well regarded. It's not quite a crime thriller, but I think it would still fit nicely within the theme of the channel.

@@bossfan49 I have to agree a bit with that. All the way through, Nicki @criminalcontent (hope I got right spelling, shouldn't be too hard as it in the post, just too lazy to check!) Got so much right but in the wrong way, if that makes any sense? He does technically kill a non convicted suspect (I personally couldn't wait for him to pull the trigger). Apparently there is another filmed ending, though, where Somerset kills John Doe to stop him from completing his plan but also to protect Mills from being prosecuted for murder.

The mainstream audience did not know who Kevin Spacey was at this time. So his appearance was a total mystery. No-one knew what to make of him. It was a brilliant bit of casting, and apparently Brad Pitt gave up a chunk of his salary so they could afford to put Spacey in it, because New Line balked at his price. But with this and his Oscar-winning turn in THE USUAL SUSPECTS Kevin Spacey soon became a superstar.

Defense attorneys can live with themselves because it's their job to make sure the state doesn't abuse its power. If someone is acquitted it's because the government fail to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt. If you or someone you care about was accused of a crime, you'd be grateful for a defense attorney who takes his job seriously.

One type of depravity is permitted in a free society. Another type of depravity is inherent in an authoritarian society. This story is asking you to choose which system you prefer. The setting is a dark filter version of today's "mixed economy" society, where most people can't make up their mind about what they really want society to be - free or totalitarian. Hence the effectiveness of the question.

If you dig this ‘90s crime thriller style, screenings of “Silence of the Lambs,” “Fargo,” “Usual Suspects,” and “The Fugitive” are required viewing. You could throw “The Big Lebowski” into the mix, but that’s more of a comedy-caper film, doesn’t revolve around police and crime outright, and is more of a vibe.

There's one thing Johnny boy missed: if you're found not criminally responsible you don't get let go, you end up in the forensic psychiatry system. With all the crazy shit he's done and how calculated he was in doing it no forensic psychiatrist would ever let him back on the street. They can hold you indefinitely. Though he'd not be doing hard time society would most likely be safe from him. I would have just let him plead insanity. My ending is way less cool but realistic.

Yes, countless movies ripped off the credit sequence to this movie. But none ever matched its twisted atmosphere. The visuals themselves were groundbreaking. Fincher has mastered this ultra-dark contrast-y style. The depth and texture of the lighting was achieved through a photochemical process called 'bleach bypass', which was another thing so many other filmmakers copied from this movie back when movies were actually shot on film. Most notably Steven Spielberg with SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. It really enhances the blacks and gives everything a washed-out look that is still crisp. And it was with SE7EN and FIGHT CLUB that Fincher established himself as a visual perfectionist on par with Stanley Kubrick.

The problem with this movie, for me, is that Mills' wife is murdered, not for one of the sins and conversely, Mills is not murdered, but is guilty of one. Remember that John Doe is milled because of envy, Mills should have been killed because of wrath. A similarly dark movie you might enjoy is 12 Monkeys, starring Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt, by Terri Gilliam.

The ending was good but I felt it was a forced ending. It could have been, should have been more complete. John Doe being envy didn't totally add up, considering he held most of the human race with disdain and he said he only killed sinners, yet killed Tracy for an unjust reason. Throughout the movie, Mills was obviously wrath, but Somerset was clearly envy. If you analyze the movie, he envied Mills. He envied his passion, his home life, the fact his career was starting off, whereas Somerset was retiring, jaded and broken with nothing to show for it. He even had a line where he said he admired a man showing emotion or something like that. The ending should have done something with that. We'll never know what the original script was
