Thanks so much for showing color choices that don’t work! Most times we see ‘perfect’ fabric choices in the videos, but we don’t know why the fabrics work. Showing us what and why something doesn’t work is very important. I learned a lot from this video- thanks!
Wow!!! What a fantastic quilt - and the snail’s trail is one of my favorite blocks. Adding some of the storm at sea pieces is fabulous. I’m in the middle,of watching your tutorial and had to let you know that I appreciate the foundation paper piecing )I love to do that!), plus the Accuquilt directions - I already have that BOB die. I’m sort of terrible thinking about how to manage a scrappy quilt and your directions are just perfect for me. I’m going to share your video with a friend as she has produced several very scrappy quilts and I,know she will enjoy your video. Thank you so much for doing all this!!! I definitely will be watching more of your videos😄😄😄👍👍👍👍❤️
Wow, looks like a lot of pieces for each block. But very beautiful. I'm still cutting out your 54-40 quilt. I'm excited to see it finished. I kept thinking 54-40 reminded me of another pattern. The Tennessee Waltz!! It sounds like this quilt should be made with scraps too. I think it would be easier. You did a great job as usual ❤️
Carol, this quilt was on my to-do list--but I was going to have to pattern it out myself. Then Carol sprinkles her magic quilting dust and puts a pattern out generously. Thank you. I have rulers that will execute the diamond rectangle (Studio 180 diamond rects--a fav of mine for sashing/boarders) as well as the square in square. I have a ruler fetish, so I also have triangle in square ruler....but I prefer an unseamed diamond. HOWEVER, the more acute angle on your paper pieced units provides a more sparkling rendition (to my eye) to the pattern--though I'm too lazy to do that. I would likely paper piece the snails trail and perhaps the square in square. Your color exposition on your blocks was very helpful. Thanks for sharing those valuable insights.
Thank you, Leisa-Land! Your comments always make me smile! I know a lot of people like the Studio 180 rulers/templates and the Marti Michelle rulers as well. I like the paper piecing for precision, but I don't do as much of it now as I did before. Good luck with your project and thanks again for watching and commenting.
@@CarolThelen I love this method for 3" Economy blocks which allows for useful scrap zap while creating lovely "vignettes" in the middle of the block. I have to admit, though, that FPP made my brain hurt when I first approached it. I initially resisted getting an add a quarter, but was glad when I did. I have M. Michell's Kaleidoscope rulers. My real favorite is the Deluxe Corner Trimmer Tool (I'm sure I've mentioned here). It provides perfect 1/4' markings without having to futz about --further, it trims all of the corners if one wishes for "accuquiltesque" results. In addition to the traditional markings that it does, which are invaluable, It's a great tool for marking 2 x diamonds pieces to 2 x diamond pieces to get the right offset for perfect seam alignment. I've been playing around with scrappy LeMoyne stars using 1.5" strips to make a 2" finished diamond (9.5" finished block). I've really been enjoying some of the creations, and I find it to be a great way to use smaller strings. I just mark one join on the back of the top piece, and then lay the dot on the seam of the one underneath. You can easily feel it (or divine it with a perpendicular pin). It is perfect each time.
I love this! I would like to try some sample blocks with scraps, and then plan out a large quilt. Paper piecing isn't in my skill set, but you make it seem as though I could stitch this. Thanks and Happy Sewing!
I understand. If you want to try rotary cutting the fabric, here is a link to those. The diamond sashing will be a little tricky because of the angle. Download those here -> drive.google.com/file/d/1pKkJvrV_JiqZOMZIJpu3jZczZPOvF01g/view?usp=sharing You might look at Marti Michelle's website for her Snails Trail and Storm at Sea templates. Be sure the sashing and cornerstone sizes match the block size. Marti's website -> frommarti.com Good luck and thanks for watching!
You absolutely can do paper piecing...you just have to get your brain to "see" in the obverse--meaning you have to train your brain. (My brain was a little slow!)
You do such an excellent job of teaching. I have been quilting for 3 years now. I have an a quilt but only use it for cutting 2 1.2 inch strips. I do have an 8 inch block cube but I just don’t understand how to prepare fabric for it
OMG Gwen, We must get you using that 8" Qube. There is so much you can do. I like to starch all the fabric before cutting it. I think the starch gives better cuts and makes it easier to sew. Get some starch and go for it! Accuquilt has some great videos. I suggest you look for videos on whichever cutter you have. and on the 8" Qube. Good luck!
When I first tried quilting I wanted to try many blocks, but had no idea how to combine the colours. I put some fabric in the photocopier. I cut out paper shapes without seam allowances and played with them. I stuck down the ones I liked for my sampler quilt, then started cutting the fabric. No fabric was wasted. All the best. Sorry, maybe the diamond sashing makes it a little too busy? It might be better with plain sashing, to let the pieced shapes stand out better?
I think that would look good as well and it would be a little less busy. I like the stars made by the diamonds and square in square cornerstones. Good luck with your project and thanks for watching.
Omitting the diamonds in the sashing would compromise the block's integrity. The diamond sashing completes the "undulating" pattern; accordingly, omitting it would undermine the intended design.
@@CarolThelen I can't open the file. My phone says it is an unsupported file type. After work, I will have a session with my laptop and EQ 8 to see if it opens and will send to the program to make paper piecing templates for the triangle in square and diamonds. I'm almost finished with Woven and a baby quilt (baby shower August 13!). That makes Sea Snails next!
Stunning! Is there, by chance, a paper pattern to purchase? If not, what is recommended for the best type of paper to use? Because there are so many pieces, something like Carol Doak's paper foundation would be more economical? Or?
I would use the thinnest, cheapest paper you can find. Check if you have a local office supply or printing place. They might be cheaper than using your own ink and paper. But Carol Doak's paper should work just fine. Thanks for watching.

For the AccuQuilt version, the sashing is 4" x 8" finished and the cornerstones are 4" finished. I'm not sure about the paper pieced version because I don't have the quilt anymore or the pattern. If you print out the pattern page with the cornerstone and/or sashing foundation, you could measure it. Good luck and thanks for watching!

These blocks can be made with precision rulers. Deb Tuckers Diamond Rects is a great ruler. I love use diamond rectangles in sashings/boards, and that tool allows perfectly executed units. Also, her square in square ruler would help with the precision piecing on the those blocks. Personally, I like to paper piece "some" things--like smaller economy blocks which. I use newsprint to make it easy to tear and less expensive than specialty papers. I love my add a quarter ruler too (which I resisted buying...but was never sorry once I had).
Since this is paper pieced, you could enlarge the pattern to get that size. This is a large size so you would most likely need to go to a copy store that has a large format printer. This is the only way I know of to make a paper pieced pattern larger. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
You download them from the description below the video. Here is how to find that - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wGJfAXcFbbA.htmlsi=9f6HUuCx74gklqFY Thanks for watching.
