Season 2, Episode 1: too much brightness to see Crowley's eyes better

Contains flashing (mostly in the angry lightning and night driving scenes)
Usual explanation: So, I basically cut to the frame for every shot of Crowley in these scenes (with the exception of stuff where he was far enough away that you fully couldn’t see anything) with some extra character interactions here and there for context. I avoid leaving things more complete so that the video doesn’t get blocked for copyright, and I figure that works fine since this is a closer look at what exists in full in official places anyway.
I'm going to do all of the Season 2 episodes, but these videos take a while to do (it’s a lot of “does it look better like this or like this” while adjusting levels for the different shots within a scene) so I just want to give a heads up that it will take me a while to finish them all but I'm definitely going to do all of the episodes in time (and we’ve got a long wait til s3 anyway :) I hope y’all enjoy!

Heeey everybody. I'm definitely going to do all these videos for all the episodes but life has been hectic lately and I'm getting various asks about Episode 6. I'm going to do these episodes in order, but if you are curious about what episodes I haven't done look like and want to give it a go, here's how to do it in the editing program of your choice (please understand that I'm not going to advise on how to get said episode footage ty in advance): I use Final Cut but any program should have features like this and there are free options out there. My process is essentially just messing with the brightness/midtones/shadows (these are going to have different names depending on the program but all programs should have some feature like this) until I get as much visibility as I can. I typically raise the brightness first, then the midtones, then lower the shadows setting by -1 to -3 to add a bit of contrast back in. Some programs may just let you adjust brightness and contrast but similarly it's just gonna be fiddling around with it to figure out what looks best. Different shots in a scene are going to have different lighting so I prefer to figure out what settings look best for each shot and then apply those settings to all the times that shot is present. I love how for the entire park bench scene, David literally just keeps his eyes wide open. We all know he can't really see when he wears both the lenses and the glasses, and in this particular scene, you can clearly see him struggling to see.

Also part of the character is that he doesn't blink that much since he has snake mannerisms. At least according to the book.

In the book Crowley is describe as not blinking very much, and I THINK David does blink less frequently than the other actors do, even behind the glasses.

Have tested this out before as a dumb kid with new contacts, and figured I don’t need to blink for up to a minute with contacts in. This is obviously very bad for the contacts and your vision (it goes all foggy), but if I were David, I don’t think I would be able to tell the difference between horrible vision and terrible vision lol

not sure if this is what you meant, but david said the snake-eye contact lenses actually have his prescription in them, so he’s not wearing two pairs thankfully😂 still definitely a struggle though, poor man

It’s probably a practicality thing too. it would be annoying to constantly be putting them on and taking them off between scenes, even if they were only shooting a particular segment where he didn’t have to take the glasses off at all.

On a side note: I *really* wish I had the skills to make Shax’s entire outfit, & this video showed me why. The lighting highlights all those little extra bits: the darkened, burnt-looking edges of the bow on the hat, the angle of the vamp of their shoes (I think I might actually commit crimes for those shoes), the fact that the gloves & shoes are flatter burgundy (gloves) and maroon/oxblood (shoes) to contrast with the hat & skirt (dress?) pops of livid red that match their lipstick. The massive eff-off bow & handbag are both the mottled wine/plum of a bruise. The little three-stone earrings, which I’m certain are a nominally floral/berry image, appear like drops of coagulated blood. And then the coat with its cuffs too dramatic, collar too broad & the shoulders managing to reach just too high. Plus their makeup: the uncanniest of valleys are plumbed by having their brows so slim, upper winged liner so heavy (none on the bottom), & lipstick such an acidic slash on a permanently pursed mouth. That, along with unnaturally tight curls, gives the impression of someone cosplaying humanity but getting it oh so very wrong. You can tell they are maintaining (their form, their place in the hierarchy, their sanity) by holding it all so very tightly that it’s about to *pop*, & I love it!

actors are always handed empty cups so they don't actually have to drink anything on set. if he'd really gulped down coffee or at least dyed water, his tongue and teeth would have been stained when he opened his mouth. the cup was empty, the drinking was acting and the steam was edited in

My gosh, once again here we are. I thought I had properly hyper-fixated on S2. But now, I am reminded that DT plays Crowley hiding behind those glasses. He emotes, so gloriously. You realllllly can see his mini-depression from not having shit to do at the start here. Like he's just bored and not sure what to do with his life, besides apparently wait for Aziraphale to call him about one of 3 things. And dear heavens, the naked man bit. Like just I would pay money to find out what that stream of conciousness was happening there. The jealous little head turn- we certainly could all see that eyebrow before. But just getting to see a little more eye is so helpful!!!! Like that is 100% full attention there but there's a delicious divide between what Crowley assumes people can see and what his face is doing. You get that little frown, the lifted eyebrow- certainly serious concern. But that little head tilt down certainly changes!!!! It kind of changes from someone observing someone else, trying to piece out something to someone who is trying to figure out if their fragile little thing is safe. My gosh, thank you so much for this! I look forward to seeing the rest of your hard work.

Does anyone know if David Tennant has ever talked in interviews about the difficulties of acting with the glasses (as far as getting emotions and such across, not the logistical part of it)? I wonder if he exaggerated his eyebrows or other things even more than normal to make up for us not being able to see his eyes.
