@RFM, thank you, and a few thoughts. Thank you for sharing this with the reverent attitude that you have. You had a few light moments, but they were few, and they were light. For the most part, I felt that you recognized that you were sharing something that is considered extremely sacred within Mormonism (LDS and Fundamentalist). Thank you so much for that. I am one who has passed through a lengthy faith crisis, and have chosen to remain with the pale of the LDS Church. I am changed. The bell will never be un-rung. That said, I am one who can laugh at all of our oddities, yet, embrace them with full reverent fervor. Although, I am without a TR, presently (and have been for many years), I do hold the temple ceremonies as very sacred. Any ordinance - inside the temple or outside of it - is simply a portal and a reminder. The real test and the real power and validity of said ordinance will either be evident in our walk and talk, or it will not be. Character is the vital hinge or the vital rudder. As far as the Top 15 being P, S , and R, that is between them and Almighty God; for only God can make them such. The saints may elect them to be such, but the saints' vote does not make them such. Only God can make a man a prophet. I have not seen any evidence that they are behaving prophetically; not when they bar one child from baptism because of the actions of his parents, and freely baptize another child, because of who his parents are. Jesus said, "Suffer the little children to come unto me..." Modern day apostles say, "Well, yes, ,unless....." Russell M. Nelson proclaimed that policy revelation, and, then, calmly walked it back during his first General Conference. I guess Jesus just had a brain fart for a few years. Mormonism, with all of its oddities and warts, is, still, a virtuous, challenging faith. It is practical and inculcates organized benevolence. Whatever the Top 15 may be doing, my local ward and stake members have a bond and a fellowship that I cherish. And, that is why I warmly thank you, RFM, for sharing this in such a dignified, reverent manner. Peace.

When this was alluded to a couple of years ago in a sunday school lesson, my bishop was the first to state positively "there's no such thing like this in the church." My wife & I got a good chuckle out of that. I got my info DIRECT from the president of the salt lake temple, O. Leslie Stone (also a 70) who in August 1978 said to a group of departing missionaries: "this ordinance is being done, it is done at the request of the Church President (under his direction), and less than 3% of the church membership has received it." Now at that time, there were about 3 million members, and well 3% of that is 90,000. He did say less than 3%, how many less I don't know. I had the distinct impression from his comments that the ordinance had been sped WAY UP in frequency with the administration of Pres. Kimball. No question that a lot more LDS have received this than you would think, however I also think that unless you are a well-known (or wealthy) Mormon, or somehow well-connected (or related) to the leadership elite, I'd say you don't have a snow balls chance at getting this.

I had a mission companion whose father was a mission president. He always told (definite) Mormon myths that someone like a "humble school janitor" would receive a phonecall from President Hinckley to come in for a Second Anointing. Haha, it gave me a hope that I might receive a similar phonecall one day. I now know that was a vain and naive hope. Haha. He said that he asked his dad if he received his Second Anointing. His dad became very solemn and sternly said, "Son. NEVER ask if someone has had their calling and election made sure." Thank you Boyd Packer for reinforcing that idea. It's just amazing how much has been shared about this over the years. My institute teacher even suggested that you LITERALLY see Jesus Christ during the ordinance when trying to educate us about it around 2010.

as much as the endowment has changed over the years in the lds corp church, by now the second anointing is probably just a slide show of Jesus giving you the thumbs up.

23:49 This reminds me of when I got my endowment in the Mesa, AZ temple in 1997. I was with a couple of other guys who were also about to enter the MTC, and we met afterwards with someone who was maybe the temple president, and he instructed us on how we should be putting on our garments every time we get dressed. He said we should put our right foot in first, and then the left. He never explained why though. I've been putting my clothes on this way ever since, simply out of habit.

There was always a very thin line between LDS ritual and Masonry. I thought "secret combinations" were a bad thing because "They have secret signs and code words" (Russell M Ballard Priesthood Session 10/4/97)

I can see how that would be an inspiring thing to those that believe in it. It would be crumby though to finally be approved to receive that procedure and then realize that you and your spouse don't get along that well though.

When my wife & I were sealed, the sealer very definitely alluded to this ordinance, and made it clear that we should EXPECT this in our future. This kept me motivated and going strong in the Church for many years. However, NONE (and I mean zero) of the leadership callings stated in my blessing have ever come to me. In the last couple of years I have finally concluded that this isn't going to happen: I don't have any connection to any high LDS leaders. Nothing.

15:31 I think the horn and bottle being things from the same ceremony is a possibility. I’m thinking they store the oil in a bottle then pour some of it into the horn for use during the ceremony. The oil unused oil left over oil from the horn can’t go back into the bottle but has to be collected and reconsecrated or burned.

The description of this ordinance makes me think that a primary reason for the construction of more temples in recent years is principally to conduct more second anointings. If each takes a few hours, and the temple presidency needs to be present, it would be hard to do more than 20 per week. And with 5 million+ active members, it would take 100 temples (which the church barely reached) 50 years to give second anointings to each active member, at which point the increasingly slow bureaucracy and possibly slowing-but-still-strong member growth means that increasing the number of temples is vital to increasing the number of couples receiving the second anointing, which is vital to the survival of the church. Really sucks that most Mormons will work hard for the Church all their life, and then have a form of hell waiting for them, because they don't get this "special ordinance" selected in a twisted kind of popularity contest.

While it is highly unusual for lds women to have any power to perform ordinances outside this example, I find myself feeling that she's still perpetually subservient. She's always a level down from the men. And don't forget that she is one of potentially many wives washing the same husband's feet and proclaiming great blessings of love, adoration and powers on his head.

I would think that temple presidents would have received their 2nd anointing so when GA's show up too preform this ordinance they could prepare the temple with the appropriate acoudments...

So it is the 2nd patriarchal blessing too... Interesting. That makes the sealing power of the patriarchal blessing in accordance with D&C. Interesting that these other lesser ordinances are really just to placate as much as anything

I am surprised by the part they give the women in the second part of the anointing. However, it feels to me like a placation that was given to wives who were noticing imbalances to say, "look you are on the same level as an apostle" while still making it clear that this means that the husband is like Jesus, so the imbalance is still in place but don't complain because you have as much authority as an apostle in this one thing. I am also wondering if the husband being required to give the closing prayer allows them to correct any "false prophecies and or blessings" given by the wife, especially if the wife's blessings address certain issues or criticisms she may hope to have heard and addressed. Not to mention the wording around the blessings the wife may give seem to leave room for the husband to veto if not given by the "correct inspiration". Finally, it occurs to me that when doing the second part of the anointing at home if you choose to do the wedding feast, in a patriarchal system who would we assume is making the meal? Probably the wife. It seems to me that this ordinance revolves around the husband receiving washings and anointing, blessings, and being served and potentially fed by apostles and his wife to really elevate his status and ego. After a quick listen these are the thoughts that I have and why it feels like a way to placate wives in their imbalanced position by giving it the appearance of authority while actually fully benefitting the husband receiving the anointing in his elevated position of power and authority.

Has a PDF or text copy of this been released anywhere? I'd be interested in reading it and adding it to my collection of interesting Mormon documents. I also consider it to be absolutely bizarre that they're quoting from History of the Church as if it were holy writ, lol.

In the mormon cult you can buy your way into heaven. But apparently heaven is eternal family home evening in a place described like the sun. Sounds like hell to me.

In regards to the end of this, do you think that the women who give women the normal anointing that all endowed members receive before their endowment, have most likely received the second anointing? It seems that women who participated in this ritual receive some form of the priesthood, so it would make sense that they're the ones who would be called to give normal anointings to standard women members of the church. This is just speculating of course but it would be interesting if someone knows the answer to this. It would also really show how many people are actually receiveing this. Regardless, if that is actually true or not, I bet there are way more poeple in the church that have received this than you would think

The "Second Annointing" script shared in this episode folks is NOT a transcript Second Annointing proper, sorry to disappoint. l have read the original second annointing transcipt in 1999 & this is NOT it! That is a fanciful construction by a lds fundamentalist group based on historical documents & diaries which are in the public domain. At some future date there will probably be an exposure of the ritual, no doubt however this is not it. Feel free to check with x-mormons that have had it, they will confirm. -Thank you

I wonder….if your husband has died before the couple ever had the opportunity to receive this second anointing….does that mean it will never happen for that couple? Is the second anointing only performed on living couples….or do they also do proxies, like they do in baptisms for the dead?

None of the men have to disrobe and don a towel to anoint someone or wash their feet. I disagree with you, RFM, I don’t think women are put on par with the apostles when the woman is washing the feet of the her husband in this at-home ritual, for the reason I stated above. The apostles do not have to disrobe to wash anyone’s feet or anoint anyone’s body, only the women do. It’s just not the same.

There are some things about this ordinance that only the Lord can do, and the men who presume to take upon themselves this power are taking the name of the Lord in vain. Only Christ can forgive your sins, only Christ has to power to make your calling and election sure. D&C 88:3 Wherefore, I now send upon you another Comforter, even upon you my friends, that it may abide in your hearts, even the Holy Spirit of promise; which other Comforter is the same that I promised unto my disciples, as is recorded in the testimony of John. D&C 88:4 This Comforter is the promise which I give unto you of eternal life, even the glory of the celestial kingdom; 2 Nephi 28:5 And they deny the power of God, the Holy One of Israel; and they say unto the people: Hearken unto us, and hear ye our precept; for behold there is no God today, for the Lord and the Redeemer hath done his work, and he hath given his power unto men;

Again, all their perks now on earth, eternal hell awaits them for rejecting the Alpha & Omega- the eternal Word of the eternal Creator of the Universe

Great lecture, except Jesus Christ (God) established his Church 2000 years ago to stand against the gates of Hades and didn't break his promise to be with us until the end of the age. The Priestly authority of Jesus Christ has been handed down, by laying on of hands, via an unbroken line of authority to the Bishops, Priests, and Deacons today. The Gospel was never lost, didn't need to be restored, and Joseph Smith is a 'false' prophet. Peter warns of this in 2-Peter-2: 'False Prophets and Their Punishment' 1 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their licentiousness, and because of them the way of truth will be reviled. LDS have twisted the actual definition of who God is because Jesus is God and NOT the brother of Lucifer, therefore, LDS worship a false god and an LDS baptism is NOT valid or accepted by any Christian Church in the world, which includes ALL the 'baptisms for the dead'.
