Secret Santa surprise for family who lost everything, even son's accordion, when home was destroyed

The EastIdahoNews.com team is busy helping a local Secret Santa give $1 million to deserving people in eastern Idaho this holiday season.
Valera and Galina are the parents of three kids between 9-16. They recently came to the United States from Ukraine.
They had a home, which is very rare in Ukraine (most people live in apartments), but it was destroyed by a Russian tank.
Valera was a construction worker and Galina was a nurse. They’ve had many friends, family members, and close associates killed as they are from Bucha, where a large-scale massacre of Ukrainian civilians occurred. Bucha is just outside of Kiev and was the site of some of the fiercest fighting since the Russians invaded.
When the Russians left, hundreds if not thousands of dead Ukrainian citizens were found in the area. There were signs of torture, abuse, and other unspeakable events. This is what they left behind.
Valera and Galina lost everything and ended up in Idaho Falls where Valera works in construction and Galina worked in a potato cellar. The kids are in school and all of them are adjusting to their life.
Secret Santa asked the East Idaho News elves to pay Valera and Galina a visit - and we brought a special guest with an accordion for their 9-year-old son. Check out the unforgettable surprise in the video player above.

Then please support all efforts to get gun controls passed into law. Recently Republicans voted down a bill to get a ban on rockets launchers for ordinary civilian use. How is this possible for a civilised country? This is a slippery slope and could end up destroying the peace you take for granted.

@Maisiewuppp our country is not attacked BECAUSE our enemies know there is a gun behind each blade of grass. Weapons in the hands of law abiding citizens help protect and preserve the peace. If you take the weapons from the people, as was done by the Nazi's and even today, North Korean's, you will live under an oppressive dictatorship and have no voice. A gun never killed anyone by itself, there was always someone who wrongfully or rightfully pulled the trigger. If you say prayers, thank our police officers, our US military servicemen and women, and our law-abiding citizens for your safety today. Oftentimes just the presence of a lawfully carried weapon by a law abiding citizen is enough to prevent a crime from occurring or someone from becoming tragically injured. I hope this family does well and would like to see updates.

Wonderful help…we have 1,1 Million refugees from the ukraine in Germany, and they are all financially taking care of and receive free socialized medical care

Like others this one really touched me! One them wanting to give food reminded of my own ethnic roots. The young man who nominated them to realize they might need help and why we need to support Ukraine and be Thankful for our democracy and awake and mindful to keep it!

Agreed. Not every Secret Santa has such a touching story but it really brings a LOT more to the segments when Nate and team are able to bring out more of the recipient's story. This year the segments have tended to be shorter.

STOP with the negativity. I live in Manhattan and have seen EVERY year of Secret Santa. This is by far the BEST and Most HUMBLING reaction from a family who lost everything in a WAR and still willing to SHARE what little they have. We NEED more people like this in the World, NOT Debbie Downers. I was taught "if you have NOTHING nice to say, DON'T say anything at all."

This one brought back a flood of memories from my youth. Visiting family and friends in many European counties and how generous the people there are. You never visit without being offered tea and pastries. I loved this family. I hope this new adopted country and especially Idaho, brings them happiness and peace. I think they will thrive here. What a beautiful family. A sobering reminder of how much we take our safety for granted. I love this and am so happy they met the young man who can speak their language. That was a wonderful way to bridge the gap of trying to explain Secret Santa to them. The way the mom especially gasped and lit up made my heart soar. @@twinklenow1 Statistic Shows, the Rich of the Riches only spend when it benefits them (Exception: Warren Buffet,) and the Most Giving and Generous people are Medium to Lower Median Incomes....I've seen several RU-vid Videos doing social experiments, and on most of them it's the Homeless who helps. I've traveled All over the World and the Seven Continents, so I know what I'm talking about. I am a American.

I was thinking "it's ok to turn down the tea as an LDS person but you got to take the food or you'll insult them". I had a Saudi Arabian friend in college and learned real quick to accept all offerings even if I was full and just had one bite.

I look forward to my EIN Secret Santa tears. There are so many deserving people. You never know what is going on in peoples lives. Be kind. I can only imagine what this young family has been through. All I can say is God Bless from an atheist to this young man the missionary. He learned another language and obviously brought his compassion and empathy to the world. Thanks to the parents and community who raised such a man, such a human being. You are an inspiration.

Your Secret Santa advisor who nominated these people is a very special person. That this small apartment is such a huge safety zone for them makes my holidays that they feel safe. The Irish relatives always put in their emails/letters/communications TG here and there throughout the correspondense. Such as "he healed quickly..TG". It means Thank God. TG for Owen in this family's life, it has brought financial comfort beyond no bombs.

All these stories are great but this one is spectacular. What a deserving family and a reminder of how hard life is for some compared to most of us. How many of us have had to celebrate being somewhere with no rockets or bombs threatening our children? And what a lesson on the universal language of music, the courtesy (and fortune) to have a translator so the family could speak confidently. And then the lesson on giving and how out of touch many Americans are. In most cultures to receive without giving is humiliating especially in your own home. So while it would have been awesome had Nate and the family and crew stayed for tea, and I respect that they probably were pressed for time, I'm glad they realized how important it is culturally for them to have graciously accepted the gifts of food in return. This is an extraordinarily strong family with such honor and grace. This story is a masterclass in how to conduct honorable intercultural connections and a reminder of the lessons many of us Americans may need to learn about respecting the cultural differences of others.

May God Bless this family. Thank you Secret Santa for giving them these gifts. My paternal and maternal grandparents immigrated from Ukraine to Canada in the early 1900's. I was blessed to have grown up in Canada where there were no wars. Now living in the US it is still a reatively safe place to live. I am proud of my Ukrainian heritage and am so happy to see this family is safe here now. I had to laugh when they offered food to their guests - before they left - not because it's funny but because it's so heartwarming. We used to go visit my dad's aunt and we'd be inside the door barely 5 minutes and she's fillng the table with food and sweets! You never leave a Ukrainian home hungry!

I'm so sorry that they lost all that they had in Ukraine but thank God they all survived and were brought to a safe place. As the mom talked about not having rockets flying over them, it ought to make each one of thankful for the peace that we have in this country. I don't know what their plans are for the future but I'm thankful that Secret Santa helped them meet some of their needs for now.

It’s amazing how this couple happened to meet someone from Osgood, Idaho who helped them come over then just so happened that this special young man who spoke some of their language ran into them and understood them and now was able to help them, some things are just meant to be! God bless this family and what a talented young man!

Imagine losing every material thing you own, due to a fire, tornado, or some other catastrophe. Add to that, the loss of your friends, relatives, and your coworkers you’ve come to know over time. Then, top this off by having to move to another country where you do not speak or understand the language! I cannot imagine all of the emotions (fear, sadness, stress, etc.) these people have had to endure. This Secret Santa surprise was one of the very best ever presented by East Idaho News! This is by far a very special episode. To see their faces when they received the gifts, to hear how well their son played the accordion and them trying to give gifts back, that was so sweet. The part that made me cry was when she said how quiet and peaceful it was in Idaho and that their kids were safe. Much love to them.
