This is my surviving circa 12 year old seed grown cherimoya that I grafted some scions of Geffner onto as the grafted plant I had was unfortunately dying off, it seems like 4 of the 5 grafts have now taken so I seem to have saved the named variety for now

Great to see the Geffner grafts have taken on your large seed grown cherimoya. Well done Brett 👏

So far so good Louise, hopefully they will keep going 🤞

Well done with the grafts, Brett! It’s very satisfying when a graft is successful. Even more so because you were trying to save your Geffner atemoya.

If they hadn’t taken the Geffner would have been lost as the rootstock has pretty much died off now, probably roots have gone. Hopefully my large cherimoya will stay alive. The second one that ‘died’ last winter is now coming back

Wow, what a result! I lost my atemoya a while ago to what I believe to be urea/ammonium damage or accumulation of fertilizer salts in the pot, with possible adverse changes in pH. I now periodically flush the pots with rainwater or deionised water. Commercial fertilizers often contain urea or ammonium. The problem with ammonium cations (NH4+) is that they cause over-acidification of the soil/substrate/mix if they are allowed to accumulate over time. I am willing to try again with tropical Annonas like atemoya and cherimoya, but I will go very easy on the applications of commerical fertilizer blends containing urea or ammonium, such as Miraclegro. Nitrate salts (for providing plants with the essential macronutrient, Nitrogen) are better than urea or ammonium salts, as nitrate anions (NO3-) are immediately accessible for uptake by the plants, and the nitrate anions do not contribute to over-acidification.

You might be overanalysing it Gary, sometimes tropicals just die here because they hate our climate 😬. Obviously I almost lost one to cold damage and sold the other one so I need to focus on this one a bit more seriously 😁

Very well done with the grafts!! And the plant it self looks fantastic. I'm preparing for next March's multiple Annona scions I'll be receiving from Portugal, and all I read about is how difficult is to graft Annonas... it got me worried I will loose everything! 😅 Seeing your's is reassuring, I'll make it if I take it seriously. Thank you!!

Lol I’m a useless grafter so if I had some of these succeed you’ll definitely be ok 👍

@@lyonheart84 IF I do OK, then I'll have A. mucosa, A. squamosa red, A. diversifolia, A. reticulata big red and lot's of cherimoya varieties to share in 3 years from now. I'm also growing A. squamosa purple from seeds, they're 5 months old now, so count those too in a couple of years. In the meantime, if you want regular squamosa you know I have plenty to share, also my regular seedling reticulata is over a meter now and it will branch out next season, I reckon 2 more years and I start pruning and sharing cuttings.

@TropicalGardeningCyprus it will be interesting to see how the fruit is on seedlings 😁

@@lyonheart84 yes, very interesting!! Especially reticulata, because I haven't tried any fruit, I bought seeds, so zero info on approximate variety or taste. The purple squamosa, I can bet it will be better than my green ones because the seeds came from a fruit I bought, the label said SA imported, and it was delicious!! Far too many seeds, but stronger coconut yogurt taste! But of course, they're not true to seed, the taste of the fruit just gives an idea of taste direction and tendencies. My green squamosa were again from imported fruit, and as you saw, they need the brush... My friends from Paphos have a different green cultivar who's flowers smell like alcohol, attracting all sorts of beetles and don't need any brush work. If you want cuttings of those, I'll take a few more when I go to get for me also.

@TropicalGardeningCyprus I’m definitely going to look after my seedling cherimoya more than before as it never occurred to me to graft onto it.
