When a plant becomes cristate or monstrose, it can be really challenging to tell what the original plant was, unless the grower can share how it developed, so I just have to trust the grower that this is a monstrose version of Selenicereus grandiflorus, which is a type of jungle cactus native to Mexico.
It's the highlight today at #191 of "365 Days of Plants".
In this video I'll discuss where it is originally native to, where I'm growing it in my home, and basics like light, watering and fertilizing.
You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.

My Grandma had this next to her "True Christmas Cactus" and I've have fond memories of my Grandmother screaming profanity in three languages when someone asked her why her plant was dying!🤣 The blooms are white and absolutely stunning. I've only seen them flower after reaching considerable size.

Growing up in the Philippines I’ve never really wrapped my head how many plants we have growing there; until I moved to New York and get deprived from nature. Your series truly inspires me into discovering more plants. Thank you summer!

You should know that, unfortunately, she made a mistake in regards to where this plant comes from. Cacti are all from the Americas, and one rhipsalis species is also native to regions of Africa. There are no Asian cacti.

KelsiBriana there are actually, if you travel down south of the islands where I was born... they are there. When I said I never noticed nature, it’s when I was just plant blinded. Don’t just assume everything grows in one place some plants gets to be invasive on other parts of the world too 😊

@@k700i I'm not saying that you're lying or anything, but no cacti are native to Asia. If they are there, they were brought there at some point by people. And yes, lots of species are endemic (only occur) to specific regions of the world. Summer even corrected herself about this plant on her Instagram.

What a unique looking cactus, I have never seen this in person, but if I ever did I would pick it up because it is so unique looking. Thank you again Summer, I will see you tomorrow.

I have the normal version of this plant. These grow in some deserts in Arizona and northern Mexico. The flowers are beautiful, huge, white and bloom at night. It is a large rambling and viney type of cactus.

The planter suits it well, I think that's why I like succulents and cacti most , is pairing them in fitting pots

Arn't cacti native to only north and south America? how is this one native to the Philippines, does anyone know?
@KelsiBriana
@KelsiBriana 4 года назад
It isn't, she must have misspoke. All cacti, except for one particular species of rhipsalis are only native to the Americas as you've said. This selenicereus is from Mexico and regions Central America.

Once they bloom, if they’re pollinated, they will grow something similar to a dragon fruit. They’re beautiful, but with spines

You always have the coolest plants. I have started my collection from your video series. Thank you so much. Have you ever grown any Bat Flowers? Tacca Chantrerie? I have 8 of them. They are quite fussy , but i have the 4 large ones blooming. Do uou have an email address that you could help me identify some plants my neighbor gave me. Thank you for your expert knowledge. I was so sorry to hear about Kippee. You have my thoughts and prayers.

Only One single time in a whole year, at night when its full moon, the white flowers bloom, white and beautiful, reflecting the reflected light from the moon, attracting the insects like a queen, all to spread its pollens to live on on our planet, like a one time opportunity that divinely is successful, what a fate of a plant that refuses coincidence and ties link to a destiny, a divine destiny...
