Jason Chan of BananaMana Films does a non-scientific test of the Sennheiser AVX Wireless system. He compares the ME2 with the MKE 2 lavelier microphones as well as the dynamic range of the AVX system.
The Sennheiser AVX receivers were directly plugged into a JuicedLink preamp which was then connected directly to the camera (Sony a7s II).
The audio gain level on the Sony a7s II was set at the lowest level : 1 so as to NOT engage the cameras limiter.
The audio was normalized (gain added) in post to match all levels and give a good level for youtube.
We found that the ME2 was far more sensitive than the MKE2 and we had to raise levels on the MKE2 quite a bit more to match the ME2.
So the normalized audio is a good way to compare noise floor - once we made both levels equal we found the noise floor the same on both microphones. We didn't notice that much of a difference between the ME2 and MKE2 in terms of vocal quality. In fact we felt the ME2 was generally warmer and fuller.
However, the MKE2 is a much smaller capsule and may be easier to hide on dramatic productions.
We're always trying to become more economical, efficient without compromising on quality on productions and we think the AVX will help in a big way!
