If you're looking for a very large utility bag, then this is the project for you. You can store lots of craft items, boots, shoes, bottles, tools, just about anything in these.
Finished size is approximately 16" L x 5 " D x 6 1/2" W. (40cm x 13cm x 16cm)
Most of my bags are made with upholstery fabric rescued from going to landfill, but this tutorial is using quilting cotton just to show you how versatile the pattern is.

Wow! I discover you in this days. I'm not working yet because I've been sick. My "hobby" is to sew, but my economy is not doing so well because my illness. So I decided to try selling my handcraft. I leave in Sweden, but I didn't know how to count prices or stuff. I usually buy fabric or zippers in second hand places. Thank you so much for your tips, It is very helpful for me. You are a wonderful teacher too!!

Every video that I watch, I am more amazed, thank you! My mom had 8, and had little time to teach me. All my life, I have made my clothes, and my girls clothes, while they were young, and never knew the ways you are showing. I learned to read patterns, but mostly stayed with simple ones. Now I make my own patterns, as I wear mostly jumpers, skirts. But I am grateful for all the extra tricks and hints, and sewing notions! love the bags that I have made, and will be trying the toilet paper holder and this bag, sewing is a pleasure with you!! God bless you.

Thanks so much for this tutorial Christine! My husband is a pro drummer and recently asked me to make some bags for his percussion instruments. He retired an old worn out carry-on suitcase which he used for carrying/moving some hardware and instruments. I harvested four zippers and pulls and the longest zip was 21". He needed a bag to protect/carry his gourd and sticks and this bag was absolutely perfect. I searched your site as I needed to know how to make a box bag with lots of volume for a 15" in length rigid instrument. I used vinyl from my stash and lined with fleece and quilters cotton (also made the handle and tabs with them). The bag size was perfect for the large gourd that he had no way of carrying and protecting. He loves his Valentine's Bag and left it in view of his recliner for a few days to admire. Since, he has requested bags for his tambourine, clickers and cowbell - I'll be busy! Big thank you for your great videos and excellent explanations.

You just do such a good job of teaching and showing us how to make things. You really do. You’re clear, direct and to the point, no rush at all (thank you!), all with a very kind way of doing it. I (we actually, my husband and I ) have had one of the worst years ever (retired a cross country move last summer, sickness, injury 😳😢🙄) and I’m feeling pretty beat up. But I have my sewing room set up now and I find listening to you above most others is most helpful as I relearn to sew. Anyway, you are amazing and I just want to thank you for being such a sweet and kind person to spend time with. I can’t wait to try making the utility bag. I have some denim I think would be good for that. Blessings to you! 🥰

I have made these type of boxy bags. I like your method for the boxed corners. I want to make one using PUL fabric for the lining since it is a water proof fabric. I would put my shampoo and conditioner inside for traveling. That way if it spills it will be easy cleaning. Thank you so much.

Wonderful product and a great job at sewing & instructional teaching Christine!!! ... So many uses, but perhaps if extra straps were added, it would work as and be named as a "Skinny Enlongated Backpack", which would be lighter, easier to manage & carry vs a standard Backpack ... It can also be named "Skinny Long Hiking/Biking Pack".

You are so inspiring. My question is about the zipper tabs, is there a video where you show a close-up of how they are set in the finished bag, what are they for? I am making some cute little phone bags but do not like the way the zipper is sort of crunched at the end from the designer's online instructions. Sewing flat with maybe a zipper tab might be my remedy and I intend to incorporate your tab instructions into a bag today. The tabs certainly trim your bag nicely, as do your labels.

I love it!! My husband has a few different shavers and beard/hair trimmers that he only uses when he grows a beard but I am always finding bits and bobs to them everywhere in the bathroom. This bag will keep them all neat and tidy and easily locatable and I can hang it in the inside of the linen closet door! My nephew is a bowler and has huge feet so I can make one for him for his bowling shoes. My brother plays hockey so he could use one for his regular shoes so they dont smell like his hockey bag and he could also probably use one for the little things like extra laces, lace pullers, blade covers and gloves. I LOVE this one!! Any idea where I can find the webbing/strapping and zip and pulls in bulk in the USA?
@ChristinesHomeAffairs
@ChristinesHomeAffairs Год назад
MK, I just did a very quick Google search for "webbing strapping" in the USA. There are lots of companies that come up. Perhaps if you did those search terms and include your state, you'll find a place not too far away. I think I have a coupe of links to Amazon in the description that might help too. Strapworks, USA Ratchet, & USA Cargo Control are a few that have it 😀

Hi Christine, if I wanted to make a smaller bag, should the difference between the width and the length of the fabric pieces always be 2 inches? I noticed that in the tutorial you mention 10 and 12 inches as well as your large 21 and 23 inches? Thanks
@ChristinesHomeAffairs
@ChristinesHomeAffairs 9 месяцев назад
Not always Philippa. It depends on how much longer/shorter/wider you want your bags to be. If you like the height and depth, but you just want shorter, then you only need to reduce the length of fabric😁

Great tutorial, I would like to make this for a friend with his favorite football team fabric. What size needle are you using to make this? My machine can’t sew through with a size 14 unless I hand crank really slow. I made a boxy bag and there were skipped stitches away from the seams, with 4 layers sewing normally. I guess I will have to use a size 16US
@ChristinesHomeAffairs
@ChristinesHomeAffairs Год назад
Thanks RG. If using my domestic machine, I'd use the #14 needle, and go slow over the bulky parts. I find the old mechanical machines better than the newer electronic machines. They're a little timid when they get to the bulk. If your machine can take the 16, then I'd try that. On my industrial, I often use an 18 needle, but I'm guilty of using 12's if i'm too lazy to change it 😀
@SparkyOne549

@@ChristinesHomeAffairs Thanks for your reply. My current machine is electronic mid level Janome. I do have a early 1970’s mechanical singer that should work better on bags. I haven’t used it for that though lol The boxy bag i made was on an entry level Singer. I will give the old machine a try on bags. But reviews for my Janome I have said it doesn’t like layers so I haven’t tried bags on it.
@ChristinesHomeAffairs
@ChristinesHomeAffairs Год назад
A lot of the machines don't like layers. Especially electronic ones. I ended up selling all but one of mine, and always pull out the old mechanicals when I need to my domestic machine. My trusty old Janome did the first 1000 shopping bags plus loads of other things. I just can't kill it😁
