Welcome to my first medieval project since the ~Dawn Of My Channel~ in July 2021.
I’ve wanted to make a historybounding dress of this particular reference picture since I received the picture in my materials for a Costume Design class in 2011. (This was before I knew the term “historybounding”--I just knew I wanted something I could wear everyday which took inspiration from medieval clothing).
As a bonus, when researching reference pictures for the gown’s decoration, I stumbled across a Cambridge University Press article about the Mammen Finds (from a Viking burial in the 10th century) which was fascinating and which I have included here, along with two related websites.
I hope you enjoy the video! :)
RESEARCH & IMAGE CREDITS
Cambridge University Press article on the Mammen Finds (Open Access): www.cambridge.org/core/journa...
Sketch of Acanthus Leaves Embroidery (from an 1869 article by Worsaae) about the Mammen Finds, reproduced in Heatherrosejones.com (She notes that the drawing is out of copyright)
*This website also gives detailed descriptions of her observations, a bibliography, and embroidery patterns from the Mammen Finds, which I did not use, but which you may find interesting. She gives permission only for personal, non-commercial use.
Blog with instructions for how to reproduce the Acanthus Leaves Embroidery from the Mammen Finds: opusanglicanum.wordpress.com/...
She gives instructions, with pictures included, about how to hand-sew the embroidery. Again, although I didn’t use this in my own project, I wanted to include it in case anyone finds it interesting.

The embroidery on this is perfect! I love how you found a blue that stands out but compliments the dress so well. I want to learn that stitch :)

Yeah for the algorithm sending me new history bounding costume sewing goodness! It's beautiful. I spent nearly the whole video trying to figure out who your voice reminded me of... It's what I sound like on recordings. (Which is of course not how I sound in my head - making it hard to place). Really odd feeling. :)

I'm glad I stumbled upon your video this morning! I, too, also have been known to sew two lefts or two rights or one upside down! Historically, I'm sure we're not the first to do this!! I especially like that you used a modern knit to make a medieval dress...good on you!! I'm a premedieval historybounder, 10-12th century, and I prefer natural fabrics, cotton, linen and wool.

Thank you!! I'm so glad you like it. I love working with linen, myself, but cotton knits are probably what I use the most :)

I love the style of this dress. It's good to hear your thought process as you go along, sounds like what I do. Also love the embroidery and decorative neck design. Came out great! 💖🌟

This came out great! And thank you for sharing how you got around the fabric shortages and other oops. It helped me figure out how to get around mine too 🙏🏽💗

Thanks for watching! I think it's important to share the struggles of a project, not just what went well. Glad you found it helpful!

Ok, so basically you did the kirtle shape with a knit, which allowed you to get by without a closure? Because stretchy? That’s an intriguing thought, because I like the kirtle shape for historybounding.
@winchcraft.stitchery
@winchcraft.stitchery 11 месяцев назад
That's exactly it! I love the kirtle shape but don't really want to deal with 2+ feet of spiral lacing every time I do Medieval historybounding. It's the reason I love working with knits so much (that and the fact that you can get away without felling the seams down) :D

the struggles of looking sickly while wearing yellow but also wanting to naturally dye your fabric and yellow is the easiest to achieve 😂
@winchcraft.stitchery
@winchcraft.stitchery Год назад
RIGHT? I've done natural dyeing, but never been able to use the fabric because yellow dye has always been what was available. I'm going to try for some walnut dye in the fall, though, and I do plan to make a video about it! :)
