Oh my god does Shad seriously think Starship troopers is a serious film and not a satire? Edit: oh my god does he not realize HELLDIVERS is satire!?!?
@paulsmart4672
@paulsmart4672 5 месяцев назад
Well the film has the opposite problem of the book, you see. It's is just very well made and engaging. You'd think a special effects battle/gorefest that old wouldn't hold up, but it does. The bugs are genuinely threatening monsters. Shooting them is cool. There are spaceships. Some of the spaceships explode. It does a well executed form of that joke Verhoeven likes where characters are very concerned for, and attempting to save, the life of someone that is very obviously extremely dead. If you want to just ignore everything its saying and consume it as a dumb, fun action movie you can. It can serve that role very well if that's all you want from it.

Its a weird bit because that information is coming from a very unreliable narrator. It appears to be there to demonize both the bugs and the Mormons. "The bugs and mindless killing machines that will slaughter every human they can get their claws on. Don't be like these idiot Mormons, who dared to defy us, or the bugs will get their claws on you. (They had it coming)" Honestly, whether the event happened at all is pretty questionable. All that went over Shad's head, of course.

Shadiversity is someone who I've realized is incapable of seeing nuance in anything. You are either right or wrong, I think he literally thinks it's a battle of good (right) vs evil (left). He's literally said he doesn't see parties just woke and unwoke. And he's so afraid of being wrong he surrounds himself with an echochamber of yes men. He's so defensive because he thinks he's on the good side, so he can't be doing wrong.

Hut the bail on the head I'm afraid. @BlazeMakesGames

this seems like the real explanation for his viewpoint. He sees people critiquing the humans in the movie and assumes that means that they're siding with the bugs, and that they're "Anti-Human" somehow. But nobody is actually taking that stance. The point is they're critiquing the methods of the humans, cause the movie is a goddamn satire. there's literally a reporter in the movie that is like "Some people think we should take a live and let live policy with the bugs and stop pointlessly slaughtering them all" lol
@djinnxx7050
@djinnxx7050 5 месяцев назад
Nuance has been evicted from much of politics these days. Used to be a lot more room for disagreements and grey areas ten or so years ago, but you try having a nuanced view on topics ideologues inevitably hold a black or white view on and watch as their ideological framing defeats reason not by good argument, but the diminishing of patience and respect for others such that people no longer care to lay out their position because they know it won't get through nor gain them anything but abuse. There is little discussion, it's arguments and stupidity. Be you "woke" or "anti-woke", left or right (as in not moderate or centrist. At least both sides agree in their distaste for us though, so that's something I guess... ), you're ironically the same in your accredited flaws. It's depressing to see people so easily puppeteered when the majority of us agree upon the main problems with society, that being the "elites" that shaft everyone regardless of political leaning. Instead of arguing over a movie, we could be dealing with actual problems, but nooo, let's all argue about dumb shit on twatter instead and make ourselves feel better for having the "correct" opinions and being "on the right side of history", ugh. That final phrase alone fills me with dread.
@Jorendo

@@BlazeMakesGames He said that those claiming the humans are bad, are vegans. Huh...well I'm not a vegan, but in the movie it's very clear we are the ones in the wrong there as humans. In the tv show we even see humans waging war with another alien race as well, yeah we ain't goody good guys at all. One can still like the movie, hell I love the Empire in Star Wars, that's what made me a fan as a little boy, but the Empire isn't exactly the greatest of the bunch out there for others either.

there is a lot of people who hold ignorant views because they dont want to come to terms with the fact that they are in the wrong side of history. its uncomfortable to recognize you are wrong, and i feel like its a feeling we can all relate regardless of side. problem is some people are too cowardly to face that reality and its way easier to live in echo chambers than actually face opposition. thats why they never talk to anyone directly, they speak of vague generalizations, it helps create an illusion of a faceless, shapeless mob rather than giving it a form. its all deep insecurity, wich shad is in spades, so its not surprising he has gone down this path.

When people talk about Verhoeven not understanding the book. ...did *they* read the book? Heinlein likes to pretend he's the realist. He's got all these very authoritarian ideas. He knows that anyone who's actually studied those ideas and how they tend to play out when implemented has concluded they don't work. He's bitter about it. They're just a bunch of academics who don't understand how the real world works, he thinks. His ideas feel true to him, so a demonstration to the contrary must be somehow misguided. "The social scientists nearly brought civilization to it's knees," in his weird vision of the future. Total civilizational collapse brought on by people not hitting their kids enough, or something. Heinlein uses the book to go on about how he knows how the world *really* works. Authoritarianism is *actually* awesome. But Verhoeven's knowledge of how wrong Heinlein is didn't come out of a remote and academic study. Verhoeven grew up in Nazi occupied territory. Verhoeven really did see how the world really works. He saw authoritarianism up close and personal. Imagine how this dipshit who'd never actually seen authoritarianism, prattling on about how great it is, about how he's the only person who understands the real world and the necessity of authoritarianism, must have seemed to someone who actually lived it. Facism isn't only right wing either. You may take a different route but the differences between communism and facism are minor at best. In the end, both are horribly authoritarian hivemind ideologies that suck all nuance from political discourse and shun the centre/moderates as something to be hated, that "you're either with us or against us" mentality. Why does anyone give into either if not the optics? An argument for one side or the others sounds better, has better aesthetics in your minds eye than the other. None of us are impervious to becoming facist because the aesthetics is it's allure, that shallow appearance of beauty over the reality of suffering. If that graphic is to be believed. Our politics were never going to align, but then meh, his nerdy enthusiasm for medieval history and swords, however ignorant he may be of much of it considering his religious lense, is endearing as fuck. But even if we took this theoretical nonexistent person who is trying to "side" with the bugs, there's zero inherent dissonance with the idea of them being okay with killing bugs in real life. Even within the context of their own fake argument, the idea is that the bugs are meant to be a sentient emotive species that were colonized on. Even without comprehending the movie itself, the way he's presented the argument is clearly such that the bugs are meant to be a stand-in for various indigenous peoples who were invaded and had their land and resources stolen. This is a very common talking point even among people who aren't anti-vegan, it's literally like going down the dialogue tree because people are just repeating things they've heard without any critical thought beyond that. It's also not realistic to say we should all focus on being mindful and source meat from local farms, you can't feed everybody with that type of production. Most meat you consume is coming from a factory farm anyways, if local was the only way it would be an extreme luxury because it wouldn't be able to scale relative to human population. Paul Verhoeven made a big parody out of Starship troopers. Even the choice of actors was serving that purpose, to parody society who believe pretty faces over anything else. To make humankind look like the good guys cause hey look at us, we have pretty folks here! That we are wearing Nazi inspired uniforms (even the SS logo's presented) doesn't matter, we see pretty folks so the whole movie we assume they are the good guys. The bugs are evil right? Even though all we see is Humans conquering the galaxy and building colonies left and right. We are doing what we Europeans did back then, claiming parts that aren't ours. The bugs just happen to fight back so our propaganda machine kicks, just like how we still do that these days with how the news is used to push for narratives the governments and other parties want us to have. The movie even has those bits included to show how it works, like having kids hold a real gun and stamping on bugs shouting "I'm doing my part!". Amazing how this "highly" intellectual being called Shad failed to see that and goes "But you keep saying humans are bad", YES WE ARE BAD, WE ARE THE REASON SO MANY ANIMALS NO LONGER EXCIST OR ARE ABOUT TO DIE CAUSE OF US KILLING THEM FOR TUSKS AND WHAT NOT, Jesus F'ing Christ Shad, wake up! I know you are religious so of course you don't live in the real world but one based on a fairy tale book, but in the real world, humans are a awful species. We kill anything and anyone we don't like or has something we want. We don't care about the long term effects as long as it gives us something right now, that is human kind, sorry you been sleeping and didn't realize, but anyone with half a brain and able to look out of their window knows how terrible human kind is.

Humans but not The Federation. Further, due to Brain Bugs, they know that humanity isn't a collective such as themselves. Meaning that they intentionally prosecuted a war on humanity with full knowledge that the Mormons were a splinter faction. As to 'facism' in the movie, i am going to copy paste one of my old comments on that. *Just because something holds similar attributes to fascism does not make it inherently fascist. Fascism has 5 key principles, as writen about by Benito Mussolini in “The Doctrine of Fascism” (1932) a.k.a the guy who wrote the book on it. 1) The creation of a ‘new man for a new century’, Starship troops has no mentions of eugenics, selective breeding or any attempt to ‘improve’ humanity. It infact scorns the society the came before it for attempting such things. 2) ‘Single party rule’ the starship troops universe makes no mention of how its voting system works other than people earn the right to vote for choosing the serve the civilisation. 3) the ‘ever increasing power of the state’ be that industrial, militaristic, social or political power; the starship troopers book makes it clear that the war is over territorial expansion, as both the humans and bugs want the same planets. In this point Starship troopers holds similarity to Fascist ideology, along with 99% of all other ideologies or nations that have ever gone to war. 4) ‘Uniformity’ the believe that all must march under one rhythm surpassing class distinctions and difference of identity within the states borders. All are consumed by the state. Diversity is anathema. Both the book of Starship troopers, and the film show this is not the case, otherwise the Mormon extremists and any other humans wanting to exist outside of the federation would have been suppressed and the military would be based of conscription rather than optional volunteer service. 5) ‘Everything in the state and nothing outside the state. The state is god.’ The fact that people in the Statship troopers’ universe can colonise planets outside the Federation means this is not the case. Couple that with the fact that Juan Rico’s wealthy father disowns his son for doing Federal Service, means that business and wealth also exist outside state control, ultimately weakening the state.

I feel like it's really important to point out that Heinlein was not a fascist. His books explore all manner of governments and typically they involve characters who have bought into the system 100%. Like the libertarian "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" or the Marxist utopian "Stranger in a Strange Land", the characters in the story fully accept the system, but the reader is meant to think more deeply about it. As an example, in "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" the main characters are working toward a revolution in which an AI is laying out the plan of action that they simply follow. Since it is successful and the characters end up achieving their goals, they are very happy with the outcome. But the reader is left to wonder about how many innocent people it cost to get there. In his lifetime, Heinlein identified strongly with the libertarian party. While that probably meant something different then it does today, it's probably the closest representation we have to what he actually believed.

And nobody saw the asteroid coming, no warning whatsoever? The government blames the attack on bugs. The question how bugs with limited interplanetary travel technology seemingly managed to hit earth with an FTL projectile - don't ask. Why did the rock land onto a city with majority population being happily not citizens and living life of opulence? Lucky coincidence... I mean tragic coincidence... 4) In resonce to the asteroid attack, a large scale gung-ho operation is carried out. Ends in bloodbath. Because the bugs whe were allegedly capable of FTL interplanetary warfare were not supposed to have anti-orbit capabilities. 5) Head of military resigns. 6) War moves from reckless assaults to actually strategic operation and that yields results. So yeah. The movie is firmly around the story of colonization, subjugation of local population, with a sprinkle of propaganda and cover-up.

1. A bug planet in _the quarantine zone._ Which implies the government did very little to stop the colonists from going there in the first place. Provoking an attack was useful to them. 3. In the movie the Arachnids have no technology whatsoever. Like they're not even shown to make or use basic tools. Their way of colonizing planets is to shoot their spores into space at sublight speeds and hope for the best. That hardly qualifies as 'limited interplanetary travel technology.' Not even when their home planet is under attack are they capable of leaving the surface. Hell, their plasma fire hardly reaches orbit. It's literally impossible for the Arachnids to have attacked Earth from 100.000 lightyears or so away. No "akshully" intended, just some details that hammer the point home even harder.

Haha, you think the rich will eat bugs? No. That's gonna be the next big thing separating the classes. Those that can afford fancy meals, and those surviving off bugs genetically modifies to be more nutritious and delicious.

Shad is such a mess... he's very annoying for too many reasons for me to even count but dear god the way he misses the point of starship troopers. Plus, yes, if you land on a planet and just decide its gonna be yours and start killing shit you ARE in the wrong. Like??? Its not hard to see that. I live in my apartment, if someone just shoves themselves into my apartment and start taking my shit I would also respond with violence bc wtf!? Edit: That aside, I'd be up for bug food if presented right. Not corporate bug food, but like the way people have been making them like... is it egypt that has the honeyed locusts? I have the knowledge kicking around in my brain but its super early for me, basically if it was an option and it was appetizing I'm gonna try it. I like trying new foods anyways so sure why not.

I'm frankly astonished by how utterly clueless Shad is. I mean, I've seen some left wing youtubers talk about the mentality of people like him, but I thought it was hyperbole. Turns out they were dead on. He's actually not seeing the very obvious critique of militarism and fascism. Just wow.

There used to be a guy long ago who'd watch this movie and question why the walls of the colony didn't have some form of machicolations that would've enabled defenders to shoot the bugs directly below the walls without exposing themselves by leaning over the edge. I wonder what he's doing now.

The other thing is that things which evolved separately from life on Earth would necessarily have a separate genetic heritage and therefore could not possibly actually be bugs. That's just something the federation calls them in order to depersonalize their slaughter.

Christians in general do NOT study religious texts, they were told what the text says by some pastor in their childhood (every pastor interprets it differently) and they never check what it actually says. Most hardcore christians say "the Bible supports me" regardless of what they say. Like the pastor who scammed all his followers to buy crypto and lost it all. I have actually met more atheists who have read christian texts to prove christians wrong than christians who have read any religious text.

At the age of 13, I was able to understand there was a bigger joke going on by the propaganda alone. NPH's outfit at the end sealed the deal, I remember going "That's a full-on Nazi uniform" and my dad getting this little smirk as he said "It sure is, kid" and a moment later, both of us guffawing at the giant CENSORED bar after the hour and a half of gruesome violence.

24:10 I am not sure if this research was available at the time the movie was made (and it definitely was not available when the book was written) but I just can't help but put it here. Thinking about hive species (like ants or bees or termites) in terms of "1 queen controlling a lot of mindless drones" is actually wrong. The queen does not make all the decisions. Instead every "mindless drone" uses its own intelligence to assess the situation and make an intuitive decision that feels like the most beneficial to the hive. And this large amount of simple independent actors while very limited individually become capable of much more complex behaviours. The queen is the center of hive reproduction, not decision making. And people are now trying to study and utilize this approach in a field called "swarm algorithmic".

He wants to complain about people thinking they are bad just for existing, but that's exactly what Christianity says is the case. Christianity says that we are born into sin, that we deserve eternal suffering and punishment, that we are vile creatures of sin and it is literally only through the torture and murder of the only perfect being to have existed that we even get a chance at salvation. Christianity has been emotionally abusing people and telling them that they're worthless for 2000 years, and now people like Shad are totally flummoxed when a few people say "maybe humans aren't all that awesome?"

In the movie, the rock that hits earth collides with the spaceship that some of the main characters are training on first. And if you know anything about the mechanics of objects in space, you know that means that rock wasn't heading for earth until that impact. The movie literally shows us that the idea that the rock came from the bugs is a cover-up for the fact that some human trainees did an oopsie with a massive death toll as a result.

In the movie the bugs have no technology whatsoever. We're told their way of colonizing planets is to shoot their spores into space at sublight speeds and hope for the best. Even when the Arachnid homeplanet is under attack they are not capable of leaving the surface. Their plasma fire barely breaks orbit. And Klendathu is shown to be at the other side of the Galaxy, or some 100.000 lightyears away. It's literally impossible for the Arachnids to attack Earth in any conceivable way. Everything screams false flag, including letting some colonists through a militarized quarantine zone to provoke bug attacks, and this 'oopsie' was just useful for the Federation to initiate the next phase of the bug war. I mean, outside of the Federation propaganda clips ("Would you like to know more?") the Arachnids are never shown to be on the offensive, or even leave the quarantine zone. All they ever do is defend themselves against colonists and invaders.
