Went to my local one today to look at a truck(used) they just got in. First guy was nice enough to take me back to the shop because they were still doing the inspection. Talked with the used car manager and i almost smacked the piss out of him. I told him im looking at cash otd and maybe trade-in my wifes fiat. Told him i wanted 9/10k. "Idk where you got that number, im thinking around 5k" Literally pulled up nada and slammed my phone down to show the 9k. "Nada is inflated." I told him there's no way id take 5k for a 10k trade-in. Told him id still consider the truck when they get the truck back from the shop

Just experienced this personally. Most dealer sites will make mention of add-ons, accessories, or reconditioning when it applies. But when I try for a great price at one that didn't mention it anywhere, that didn't stop them from asking $2k reconditioning + other "already installed options", inflating TTL by 100% (because CDK is down, so they can't math), and slipping another *hidden* mystery $3k in between the line items and a mysteriously-high OTD at the bottom of the list. One quick draw of a calculator and they just restructured the fees w/ the same effect. Can't trust any of them to be honest!

Dealer markups were never a thing in Canada until Covid. When inventories were bare, a minority of dealers started marking up vehicles and/or only selling vehicles if you also bought the service plan, extended warranty etc. Many of the dealers that went down that road are now struggling to sell vehicles on full lots and I'm not shedding any tears for them!

Interesting you brought up Saturn. I remember back in 2007 when the Sky came out, the whole "everyone pays the window sticker" model fell apart in the Los Angeles area. I discovered one owner actually owned four of the dealerships, all of which were charging huge markups. Saturn collapsed 3 years later.

Mistake you made here Zach is when you mentioned the ADM in the first place. What you should have started your conversation with is this: Give me your BEST Price Offer for this Toyota Corolla Cross and just play stupid and let them tell you if there’s ADM or not and if there’s one how much. What you did wrong here is telling them themselves that you seen $4000 on the car as ADM and now they have higher price level to use as leverage against you to negotiate down to MSRP. What you should have done is played dumb and don’t mention the ADM and stick with MSRP and work yourself down instead of now trying to overcome that ADM and when you do the dealer will now tell you this: well we already took off $4000 off from the price.

I’m 51 & fortunate enough to be doing well financially. However, I started as a child of welfare/food stamps so my perspective is that $50k+ is a HUGE amount of money. What I’ve come to learn in my recent car shopping research is $50k+ is like a one dollar food stamp to most dealers. Sure they’d like it, but they won’t really miss it because someone will eventually give’em that dollar….. Or even $5 if they aren’t educated to the dynamics of buying/negotiating for a vehicle. Good luck in your search!! 🫡🫡✊🏽✊🏽

@dalenihiser7766
@dalenihiser7766 3 месяца назад
The rationale is logical. Keep the customer deeply baffled as to pricing. I'd even take it one more step, keep the salespeople as baffled as the customer. There is a glimmer of hope however. I have purchased 4 new Subaru vehicles online from Grand Subaru in Bendsonville Il. In each instance, the discount was very deep off MSRP. No dealer mark up was added. An OTD price was provided with the breakdown of the applicable state fees and dealer doc fee. My OTD price was the same price the F&I Manager presented to me. The online car I purchased was the same one I drove home. I've even managed to trade 5 cars online to Grand after getting their best OTD price and they never once tried to "bust" me once they saw and drove my trades. To be honest, I even once had to remind the Finance Manager to quote me an extended warranty price (which I bought after it was heavily discounted). Grand doesn't push dealer extras onto customers but they will ask and will take no for an answer. Grand is doing it right! So I drive 150+ miles to do business with this dealership and avoid the 3 gameplaying Subaru dealerships that are 40 to 50 miles of my location.

I think the reason dealers have all these markups is because they know most people are going to try and negotiate prices regardless. I’m not saying it’s right, but I’m sure without the ridiculous sticker prices, they’d probably get a lot of people trying to offer really low offers for vehicles, so this kind of offsets that. They also have small chance of some people paying for all of those fees, which is probably another reason.

Oh and their out the door price with taxes, tags and their ridiculous doc fee was $13,642.73 but they said they could lower it to a generous $13,500. (ooh a whopping $142.73 off). Due to shortages from the pandemic dealerships started adding markups on top of MSRP because they could because demand outweighed supply which is a historic rarity. This is no longer The situation. Aside from rare situation where a certain make and model is highly sought after and very hard to find there should never be a markup. Under normal circumstances, I would consider MSRP the highest possible price and a starting point for negotiation, I have negotiated many cars and would never even consider paying anywhere near MSRP. I usually look at invoice and try to get in the ballpark of 500 below invoice. And that does not mean that the dealer is losing money on the deal. They get things such as hold back and incentives from manufacturer after they sell the car that is profit for them. Not to mention what they make on financing as well as parts and service. As well as additional warranties.

I of course stipulated your recommendation for RO/PDI statement, no dealer accessories without authorization, obtained a signed build sheet, and signed buyers order.

Bad dealerships only care about selling someone a car once. That’s why they aren’t transparent on pricing, and that’s why they don’t mind screwing a customer over with “dealer adjustments” Good dealerships care about selling multiple cars to the same customer. They’ll focus on a positive experience, and run a great service department program to make the money on the back end.

Saturn wasn't all that great. They had a prior year model on the floor. (87?) Sticker price almost the same as the new year model (88?l I asked if there was a price adjustment if i bought the older model since, like any other brand, as soon as i drove it off the lot, it would a one year old used car. "Maybe we could throw in some mats." Still wanted list price. What i should have done is bought it, take a quick road trip, and then get my money back (they had that policy then), and let them take the hit by having to buyback the lower valued car but refunding the new car price.😊 Instead i bought an almost identical Cavalier for about $400 less. It really was a great little car.

There's so many moving parts here guys: You're going to get a better price at the end of the month or quarter, especially if the dealership is on the brink of hitting extra incentives. NADA shows that 43 percent of new car sales involve a trade-in, so then it's a shell game; did the dealer give you a great price on the car and lowball you on the trade-in? Give you a higher trade-in than it was worth but has a higher selling price? Factory to dealer incentives change often, so the best a dealer can do one day might change substantially the next. And then finally, and you've covered this often, the dealer doesn't want to just sell you the car. They want you to finance it so they get a finders fee for that. They want you to buy the prepaid service, the dent protection, the theft protection, and all that other stuff with much better margins than what they are getting on that car. In the grand scheme of things, dealers make very little on the delta between what they pay for the car from the factory and what they sell it to the consumer. That's about 15% or so. F&I is about double that, with the majority coming from Service. For that reason, I think it's understandable to have a strong preference to sell to someone who enters the dealer lot vs. selling over the phone or email. There's much more opportunity to wring more profit from the vehicle in Finance and Insurance, and a local buyer has a better chance of using their garage for service than someone on the phone who might be hundreds of miles away. People can get the "the price is the price" price if they want by going to Carvana or CarMax, but those prices aren't known to be good. Their clients are people willing to pay a premium for not having to worry about if they could have done better for that specific car. The answer is "no". But you are paying a premium for that. That's the reason you guys can charge $1,000 as a service fee for you to handle the purchase process. For most people, I am going to guess it's worth it. Even if the person might have been able to negotiate the same price, they don't invest the amount of time and stress of going through the gauntlet of the purchase process. Anyway, for all of those reasons, I don't think you'll get to a point where a large number of dealers simply post their bottom out the door price or give that number freely over the phone. Love your channel, keep up the great content!

These are common Toyota dealership tactics. Not that other dealerships aren't as equally duplicitous. It's just the obvious personality of Toyota in general. I look elsewhere first, every time.

Remember folks, prior to covid you could get any Toyota at invoice price or below (except very few models such as s Supra). These dealers are just greedy and pretend we are in covid times. The same applies to the service industry. Places where you stand to place and order except the same 15-20% tip treatment as restaurants where you sit down to place an order.

The salesperson cpuld do a better job of explaining to the customer what a market adjustment is and why it's justified. Poor communication from salespeople is a big reason why people hate dealerships.

I’ve bought a couple cars over the past couple weeks and I stuck to my guns and asked only for an out the door price. I kept pushing for more and more until I finally got the phrase, we’re going to be taking a loss on your deal. Without skipping a beat, I asked them to show me the invoice. The sales man said he couldn’t show me that. After a couple of hemming and hawing from him, he went and asked his finance manager for it. They were actually at cost for the deal they were giving me. I gave them the best and final for 1000 off and we agreed on a -500 off their invoice and boom the deal was done. It seemed so much easier to negotiate off their invoice price than to play the regular dog and pony. Fastest I’ve made a deal on a car. Thank you for all the knowledge you guys share. Without you guys I don’t think I would have the “behind the scenes” knowledge of dealerships. Thank you so very much!

remember the dealership don't own the car there investment is the monthly interest on the car appliances tv etc are all usually bought and owned by the store they do run on borrowed money but the car dealer is not purchasing a 30-50k vehicle . i don't understand why state legislatures are allowing the dealer franchise system to have lasted so long it was great in the 1920s when the local family owned the store you saw him and family around town church clubs shopping today for example a company owns 62 stores of many brands so there's no competition deal bad ar honda same bad deal at 8 different brands in my county and the Toyota another Chane of stores i think there are 4 owner operated left and not sure of the ford store since the founders who got the franchise direct from henry son died

I'm in the market right now for a new Honda Passport and plan on paying cash. I've been hesitant to begin this process because I absolutely hate, hate, hate this entire song and dance with dealers. The paint protection packages, trying to steal your trade, expensive floor mats, vin etching, numerous trips to talk to the manager, etc., etc. Why can't it be like buying a refrigerator? You walk in, pick out the one you like and write a check without all the BS.

Why do they make buying a car so hard ? And everytime you call them you get different answers for the same question. If we had to do this for other high value products we would just go for the lowest advertised price, but car dealers can't resist trying to treat you as a cash cow. To me MSRP is the maximum i would expect to pay, but only a fool pays that figure.
