Tbh, I don’t really mind when people get upset at fantanos reviews. Melon has had a tendency to do the exact same thing and make fun of other peoples music opinions, especially on TikTok and twitter. So for me, game is game, but Obviously leaking the man’s divorce papers is not okay💀
It comes with the territory and he's well aware of it. The more cynical take I've seen is that he does these controversial reviews on purpose for engagement and more content, similar to what ESPN does with egregious sports takes. Either way, the divorce papers thing is disgusting, but it's the internet, people/kids will do anything
@@shinji5552 ok... But joking about someone liking something is different than harassing them and claiming they don't know anything about hip hop or their opinions aren't valid because of a number.
If Fantano did not give it a number score, nobody would care about this at all. People (mainly Hip Hop Twitter) will say “Who listens to this Fantano guy anyways” then proceed to get mad when he has his own opinion about something that they disagree with. it’s so dumb
i dont rly like fantano, mainly cus i just feel like he can be so inconsistent and i just overall dont agree with a lot of his takes but i agree 100% hip hop twitter is the absolute fucking worst when it comes to people having different opinions on things they like
Him trying to remember Future's lyrics was hilarious, specially for the fact that most of the time you can't understand what the fuck Future is saying because he "raps" like he has a dick in his mouth.
We all know why people are mad. It’s really funny cause Fantano has always been consistent in loving tight, Catchy fun trap music. Savage Mode 2, Without Warning, Glockoma 2, Die lit. He’s been very consistent with these takes
nono, you don't get it, those were written by guys who didn't talk that much about their penis, sexy redd is a woman and talks too much about her pussy, of course that means her album is mid!
and the infamous lil pump tape score lmao ppl act like he’s some preppy oldhead and then get mad when he enjoys fun trap music “more” than like kendrick, its all just super inconsistent and ppl focus more on scores than what he actually said about any of the albums
Plus its not like he sucks off this genre as well. He hated other albums which are in the same auto cruner + trap lane like Ken Carson, Nav and Lil tecca . Say whatever you want about his reviews but you cant deny that bro is very articulate in his critiques
@@BlckPollen absolutely, I’ve disagreed with his takes but he’s not one to use fallacy and bad rhetoric to get his points across. Nobody ever addresses the points he makes in his reviews they just get angry about the score

Ehh it’s not really about that for me it’s more like I like stuff I can rap with and talking bout busting my pussy open or hopping on D isn’t really the lyrics I’m looking to repeat 😂😂😂
Who feels obligated to dislike music? most people would prefer to enjoy something new. but the reality is modern gender relations makes it that music isn’t judged subjectively. sexy red’s music isn’t innovative creative or even subjectively better than anything out right now but the truth is that doesn’t matter because her personality is so huge that the art comes second and I think that’s the real problem. I mean personally I fw some of sexyy red’s music but are people seriously going to act like reds music is something that truly stands out or are we going to stop to pandering to corporate decision makers constantly insulting the rap genre with gimmicks.
I would be lying if I said that isnt a part of it, but for me, simply KNOWING that every single song is just about sex with absolutely zero depth or nuance about the subject makes me completely uninterested. I want music to take me places ive never been, and shitty drill beats with bars about sex for 30 entire minutes just doesn't appeal to me.
@@ultimadum7785 I could care less about her music tbh but I just ignore her, I don’t understand why niggas feel the need to give their opinion on every thing
He shouldn't even mention that not all music that's trying to be deep equals quality and not all fun, meaningless music is shallow. It goes without saying and i don't think people have problem with this cause i'm sure there are hundreeds of Future, Travis Scott, Carti fans amongst his fanbase who understand the concept of doing a good music without having profound content 😂
@@joaquin5929 I don't think it's about him liking that kind of music as much as many people were confused about the score. Example would be if let's say he gave it a 6 and said he liked it, I wouldn't expect to see people go nuts over this take and video
Fantano’s aware enough that posting a video like this is just more content for him to easily put out there. He’s so easily baited but just cause rising to the bait does him no harm, it’s another video of his out there that people are going to watch. And yes, I do think he enjoys venting about this stuff
I mean the video is also unneccesary from his audience's perspective. They like what they like, and they disagreed with Fantano. I thought he already addressed this with MBDTF when he first put out that review. Its fine if you are a critic and your audience doesn't agree with you. Thats sticking to your guns. I don't like how Fantano puts scores on albums, because it leads to reductive convesations. The man has some very thorough reviews, and although you may not always agree, you can at least see how he comes to like or dislike music. But he has those dumb numbers around, and now thats all people really care about. If he did away with the numberstoo, I don't even think he would lose viewers either.
@donovan4222 It is completely normal for people to disagree with critics or think they had a wack take. It happens to anyone who reviews media. "Wow Im never watching this guy again because he said Bubzy 3d sucks" You gotta have thick skin to review media and Fantano most certainly does not going by his Twitter. Great personality and reviews. But he's cultivated that audience so that's what will happen.
@@PKdororo The problem isn’t “disagreeing” it’s being a grown adult and getting upset because someone likes an album that you think they shouldn’t like. That’s weird loser behavior 😂 at least if he sh*ts on your favorite album I can understand why you’d be mad, but being mad that he likes something is a new level of petty.
@donovan4222 That's funny considering Fantano shits on people all the time in his youtube shorts for liking "bad music". Now that it happens to him, it's no fair. I'll add I don't like the people doxxing him or his personal life. But his other harassment is because of the community he built. I mean you still have people calling him melon and clowning him for MBDTF a decade later. He built up that edgy music nerd fanbase. They watch him and keep his bills paid. It's just when your a public figure, you need thicker skin, or just stand behind your opinions. Not everyone has to agree with you.
The point of criticism is to critique, and then explain and justify said critique. Without explanation a critique is not only worthless, but it's invalid.
@@Bathorypriest Whining is simply a loud expression of dissatisfaction or annoyance, it doesn’t need analysis and judgment to perceive merits, faults or mistakes. Just because some people don’t like flaws in their work pointed out, or some people play whining off as criticism, doesn’t invalidate the value a critique can have in improving products, performance, experience, and/or behavior. A critique is supposed to aimed at helping to understand what has been and occasionally pontificate on what could be, in order to improve what will be.
@SterlingSanders I would take what you're saying seriously if 90% of critiques didn't boil down to "it didn't pander to me. They need to start doing things my way" ... which is why I'll never take criticism nor reviews seriously.
@@Bathorypriest Lol, fair enough. It’s why I commented in the first place. Hearing someone say it’s bad, laborious, or pointless to explain a critique triggered me, because it isn’t one without the explanation. “I said what I said.” Sometimes you have to explain your explanation, because the first time you may have expressed it poorly, so no one understood what you meant, or you may have been mistaken in the critique, perspective, or analytical considerations. Critics and criticisms can also be critiqued. It’s an external check of validation to see if your internal thoughts, considerations and analysis are externally logical, expressed clearly, understood and/or valid. If a critic can’t handle being critiqued, perhaps they are too unfoundedly hypocritical and sensitive to be one. It’s understandable, even justifiable, that an artist might be upset with a critique, because it’s unlikely the reason they made the work. But if you’re dishing critical analysis, you should be able to receive it without getting butthurt.
I don’t know why people get that into their feelings about music… People have likes, dislikes, opinions to each is own… its like you can’t enjoy $hit anymore without someone catching a heart attack over your opinion about something. I dont listen to none of this new rap, but I’ll still watch his takes just to hear what he says and keep it moving. Times he wouldn’t like a rock album that I love…but do I have a meltdown…no… I’ll leave my comment on my take on the album and that’s it. Smh
I've been watching Anthony Fantano's reviews for a few years. I usually know what he's going to give an album by what he says about it. My point is this. If Anthony didn't have numbers on his reviews, I would still agree or disagree with what he is saying. I have disagreed with more of his reviews than I have agreed when it comes to what he thinks is good. I highly disagree with the score he gave the latest Aesop Rock album. I haven't listened to Sexy Red's album yet but the chances are that I'll probably think it's decent at the very least. I like to experience different music genres and different art styles of music. I understand where Fantano is coming from. I would never have experienced a few artists without his reviews or without your reviews @Shawn Cee or without Dead End Hip Hop. Here's the main problem this whole situation comes down to imo: People are confused about his system (system of rating artists based of his expectations of an artist). And while i do think this system sucks pretty hard, and i think a vast majority of his audience doesn't use such system when rating something, that's where the misunderstanding came from. Because people think of his ratings as some consistent pattern which means the equal things to all the artists from different genres, but he thinks of his ratings as an enjoyment + expectation from a specific artist he listens to...
I'd be interested to know what you think a better rating system would be, because I can't see any fairer way to rate an artist than by what they themselves are trying to create, and how well they actally created it. Grading Sexyy Red to the same standards as Kendrick is marking her down for not doing things she's not trying to do; that would be like Thom Yorke for not rapping, or Johnny Marr for not playing piano, and I just don't see how that would be a useful rating system.
@@Eden_Laika no i don't have problem with rating everyone according to how well they are succeeding in their subgenre and all that stuff. But i'm talking about the expectations from an artist kind of thing that he mentioned a couple of times. If a great rapper makes an underwhelming project for his standard, depends on the context obviously, but i wouldn't necessarily call it terrible or bad, and vice versa. That's where it seems our point of views on that matter differ
Idk if it’s an 8 but the album is fire. The production is top notch, the choruses are catchy. The lyrics aren’t dumb but rather wild, unapologetic, funny and rapped with personality and conviction. And I would rather listen to this than Joyner Lucas, Dax, hopsin, nf, Russ and other lyrical miracle rappers with “substance” that is hollow, cringe, preachy/self-righteous and boring
all im saying bro like why given ken a 3 it makes no sense, thats like 5 points bruh and for what? and kens album actually had hype and a movement. just me tho just me
I get people's reaction to this, some of them obviously overreacted. It's just he criticized many trap albums for lyrics or monotonous delivery, yet here he is thoroughly satisfied, so you wonder what he found so enjoyable here what he didn't in other albums that go for similar "dumb fun" vibe. Anyway there are two groups of people who annoy me there, those who take his opinions too personally, and are going mad over that on twitter or wherever, and those who say "people when a person likes fun music:", that's dumb, as if people shouldn't express their opinion about his opinion? Don't you think this what the comments are for??
I enjoyed the energy on this album and her personality. That was the main thing he enjoyed too. She has a very funny personality and she is actually ridiculous af when it comes to lyrics which makes the album a good listen.

I couldn’t do that tho. If I only watched people who liked the same music as me I would just stay the same. i feel like she’s authentic and knows herself and doesn’t sell out. she doesn’t conform like a lot of the other rap girls do, she’s just herself & makes fun music and i personally like that abt her
if the issue is different categories getting rated differently than he really should emphasize what category hes rating the album based upon cuz if not people are gonna keep getting mad
why should he? if you're mad that fantano is saying this album is "numerically" as good as Denzel curry's whole discography and many Kanye albums, then fucking move on dude, it's his opinion, he says it bcos it's what he thinks and what he thought reading the album. nobody should be discussing anything, music fans are just delusional and stupid and have fantano's opinion in such high regard that they get mad at shit like this. It's genuinely crazy
@@jzugel60 I responded directly to his statement: he was complaining that Fantano doesn't make it clear enough what metrics he's using to rate an album, and I pointed out 1) the overriding metric is simply how much he enjoyed listening to the album and 2) that he makes review videos where he explains to reasoninng behind whateer rating he's giving the album in question.
Fantano comparing J Cole, Kendrick, Future etc. making one off bars about getting head to Sexxy Red who makes entire tracks about her erotic fantasies with zero word play, loud and abrasive delivery over mediocre production has to be his worst take. Even he’s smarter than that. “Mr. DrakeHasNoSubstance” loving a Sexxy Red album is laughable.
@@rouge939 Drake def has substance in his older music more often than now, but the problem with Drake now is he is repetitive, Sexy Red is a new artist so her music in the mainstream is still fresh, so if she keeps making the same music im sure it wont be an 8 when that point comes.
drake is a completely different type of rapper. he’s a lyrical based rapper that tries to go for substance in his music, and ultimately fails a lot these days. sexxy red is supposed to be obnoxious, and non-lyrical. it’s two different styles
My problem with Fantano is he will crap on something musically, then something will come out that his audience likes that does the same thing musically, and he will praise it. For instance he gave Dancegavindance Mothership a super low score for "sounding like Linkin Park". Then years later he gave Bring me the horizon post human survival horror a super high score, praising it for "sounding like linkin park".
Art tends to have a goal and an intention, failing at it to the point where you sound completely out of place is what he was going critiquing, your comment makes no sense.
Fantano's audience is constantly shitting on him for his opinion; this very video is a prime example of this. The idea that he's pandering to his viewers is patently rediculous; if he was that way inclined, this "situation" would never have happened in the first place.
I like rating music on a 1-10 scale; it helps me coalesce my opinion from an abstract feeling into something I feel I can express to others. I imagine Fantano feels much the same way, especially since, in his case, expressing his opinions to others is literally his job.
@@Eden_Laika expressing his opinion is only part of it. As a critic, his job is to recommend music that otherwise nobody would naturally listen to. The rating is to put simply the value of that particular music. If it was just an opinion; nobody would care how he felt about it other than his cult of personality.
@@thefalloutkid13 It _is_ just his opinion, though. In fact, the phrase "Yall know this is just my opinion, right?" appears at the bottom of the description of literally every single review he posts, right under the very numerical score you find so objectionable. As for recommending music, I cannot see how he, or anyone else, could do that without expressing an opinion. Whether or not he, or you, or any critic you may like or dislike, considers an album to be worth listening to is nothing more than an opinion. The fact that he's expressing his opinion numerically doesn't make it any less subjective, _as he himself admits._
This dude Fantano calls everybody that doesn't rap nonsense a "Cole clone" or "Kendrick clone" though... at this point he just simply doesn't like lyrical rappers other than Kendrick and Cole🤷♂️ Rap has always been influence based. Every rapper sounds like someone. Would he rather rappers sound like Soulja Boy and Lil Pump rather than Cole, Kendrick, Nas etc.? Like Goddamn Shit.. Cole and Kendrick be sounding like other rappers too sometimes
what the hell are you talking about? You have watched like none of his reviews? Dude has positively reviewed jpegmafia, mf doom, Danny brown, Pusha T, JID, Denzel curry, Earl sweatshirt, he’s a big fan of Joey Bada$$, hes positively reviewed even a late Eminem album from 2013, run the jewels, (older) Jay Z,
My son is super heated about this situation. I cannot stand Sexxy Red. She’s nasty and her music is fn trash. He gave this higher than anything Kanye has ever done. Let that sink in.
Fantano is weird because i dont understand what he sees in music what does he enjoy out of music. When you hear a specific persons opinion on music you can kind of tell what they like in music. Fantano makes no sense
Music is about execution as a whole. Not just the writing or just the voice and melody etc. Also he judges music on its merits. When it comes slutty hood music he thinks she's killing it compared to her contemporaries. you can't see what's good about it because it's not your thing. You just discredit the type of music sexy red sings from the jump. For you the less you hear about hedonistic sex the better but that's what she wants to rap about and she's not alone and fantano thinks she is exceptional in her craft. It's as simple as that.
@carlosdanger8043 first off I love anything with hedonistic sex as it's theme but her music is simply not good for the genre of slutty hood music if we are comparing it in that genre only Megan the stallion blows her out of the water so if sexy red is a 8 Megan has to be like a 9 or 10 which isn't the case
@@wishes_._ I'm unsure how dumb you have to be to think you've listened to more music than somebody where its his job and hes been doing it since 2010-2011. And even before that throughout his teen years
My problem with Fantanos rating is how inconsistent is by this metric. Like yes, two completely different lanes. MBDTF and sexy reds album. But why give the latter the handicap, while rating the other one under a very critical light. He’s saying I can appreciate this album for what it is, so I’m giving it a very generous score, but this other one, although it’s more artistic and ambitious, isn’t good enough to my standards and I’m harsh on it. Like just be a bit more consistent w the ratings lol. Or at least be very clear about when you basically give albums the “benefit of the doubt” for being nothing more than what they are. Like he gave lil pump and DaBaby records shit scores constantly. Was that w the benefit of the doubt?? W the same leeway he gave this sexy redd album ?? Or he just shootin the shit throwin random numbers, or throwing leniency around to his leisure. Idk at the end of the day who really gives af 💀 for ur own opinions yall n one mans opinion shouldn’t matter to the extent that fantanos does
just bc something is artistic and ambitious doesnt mean it’s inherently good or better than something that isn’t, if anything THAT is benefit of the doubt. he infamously gave the lil pump tape a pretty high score and got in a similar situation to the one he’s in rn so idk what youre talking about at all with that part. and if he gave other lil pump or dababy albums low scores then that means he doesnt think they succeeded at what they were going for, bc it isn’t “benefit of the doubt” its a consideration of what the album is going for so you can judge it on an actual accurate scale and look at it for what it is instead of giving lil pump a 1 bc danny brown had a better album. if something is artistic and ambitious and succeeds at that in his eyes, he rates it well; if something is more light and fun and succeeds at that in his eyes, he rates it well; if either of those dont succeed at what they’re going for in his eyes, he’ll rate it lower, it isn’t that deep and it isnt being more generous or giving benefit of the doubt or any of that. this is why the explanation behind the score is important, when he says he enjoys an album for what it is it doesn’t mean he’s automatically gonna like it or give it benefit of the doubt for being bad it just means he’s not gonna listen to a lil pump or dababy record expecting kendrick-level lyricism or social commentary. however there are still expectations that come with the type of music they make, if they’re not going to offer that they have to be good in other areas that make up for that. hes not more critical to certain albums he’s just critical in different ways. there are ways to succeed in whatever lane of music you’re in and appreciating an album for what it is is recognizing that fact and not at all the same as giving an album benefit of the doubt. like he says in the video, everyone does different things and shouldnt be rated or compared on the same scale nor is it really interesting to do so.
Fantano's ranking system is basically how much he enjoys an album, and that's it. He enjoyed the Sexyy Red album a lot, so he gave it a high score. He didnt really enjoy MBDTF very much, so he gave it a lower score. Nothing much more to it than that. I think you're looking too deeply into Fantano's scoring system and his opinion. His scoring will never be consistent because the enjoyment of music is something that is extremely subjective, and will never be consistent. Again, he just had a better experience listening to the Sexyy Red than other rap albums.
@@EntrEspritIt's not though, his ratings is not suppose to be used to compare artists. A 7 for Lil Pump is not the same as a 7 for Kendrick; Both artists are vastly different, so he uses the score based on his percpetion of said artist/album. He rates the albums based on the landscape of that album's genre and based in the previous works of that artist; Again it's why he high scored for Lil Pump or Carti. It doesn't mesn they're better artists than Kanye because they scored higher than 6 lol.
@@boxtupos7718 i know that. I was talking about the expectations thing he rates based on, I don't like it at all. So an artist you expect nothing from and he performs above that bare minimum can potentially get a higher rating than a good artist that you have high expectations for and he makes an album not up to his standard. If i rated this way that would create too many inconsistencies for my personal liking. I'll say though that this fantano's way of rating is more entertaining for viewers since you never know for certain if he'll give dababy or Nav a bad or decent score
Arthur makes a good point, but despite his metric shift for more pop or catchy rap I still don't think Sexyy Red's music would fall high in that regard. To be fair, I didn't listen to Sexyy Red's album so it easily could completely subvert my expectations. I'm not a music reviewer so understandably I'm not going to invest into music that doesn't immediately hook me; I'm just a regular person consuming music in that regard, but I'm open to it if people say that Sexyy Red is really worth listening to or I personally hear something I can vibe with. There is and should be a division between catchy and conscious rap because they aren't comparable, but even within this genre Skee Yee, in particular, isn't remarkable, good, or clever. Catchy music doesn't have to be profound, but we have seen time and time again from similar artists in that particular style of rap that it can be clever. Just because you're rapping about your pussy and some silly and ignorant shit doesn't excuse you from attempting to use metaphors or wordplay. You can be silly, but also not typical, and Skee Yee feels so barebones and typical that it almost feels like a parody of catchy rap. In fact, I think the only saving grace of this track would be if it was satirical. If it was deliberately mocking catchy female rap by being the laziest and most typical parody of music from that demographic then that would actually be clever considering how popular it has become despite it's lack of creativity and visible effort. Many artists have made bullshit playful songs but have also been clever; Outkast's Hey Ya! despite being pretty critically acclaimed isn't a serious song. It's literally about a man talking about not wanting commitment and wanting to fuck around, basically nothing lasts forever so why take this so serious and just fuck around. It isn't profound unless you consider someone saying "seize the day" or simply that "life is too short" to be life changing and profound information, but it is clever and catchy from the beat and to the lyrics. Now if you want to discount this entire example because Outkast is Outkast and since they are legends than you are free to do so, but I can give many more examples of rap artists making non-serious, playful, and catchy music that's better than Skee Yee. Lil Wayne rapping about wanting to fuck a lady cop isn't profound in the slightest, but he does it in a clever way; there's also an argument to be made that A Milli isn't a serious song. Does it have bars, of course, but the song is just one giant flex and isn't really conceptual like a J. Cole or a Kendrick song. Mf literally says he pops niggas like Orville Redenbacher popcorn. It's not a serious song. It's pop rap in the sense that it's simply bragadocious, the typical I'm better than all you niggas and I get hoes (particularly yours) that is pervasive in trap music, but what makes it different is that he's clever about non-serious content. That's why I would consider this to be Wayne's and Ye's bag. They can make smart and conscious rap, but they excell at cleverly writing about ignorant shit lol. But now back to the Sexyy Red argument, I do truly believe the songs I listed are comparable in terms of content, but I guess more comparable artists would be like a Dababy, an earlier Doja Cat, some Kodak like the track Bel-Air which is just about getting hoes, Future's Layup where he's takling about fucking your bitch and how he's that nigga, you could throw T-pain in the mix who primarily makes fun, party rap that doesn't take itself too seriously, some Cardi B, a good chunk of Playboi Carti, YG's I Just Wanna Party kind of - really only sonically; that song is actually really interesting because despite it sonically and somewhat lyrically seeming typically playful, bragadocious, and somewhat like a bullshit song there is depth to be found there. YG talks about not listening to his parents' advice to not be involved in street life because he was drawn to the fast life, but despite this he sees the glaring flaws in it; gang shit gets you killed and he's ashamed of being a part of it, chasing women gets you killed and is vastly overrated, and despite his self-awareness he feels pressured to be violent because of his image. Just listening to the song it sounds like some typical trap rah rah, but it actually can double as a critique of hood culture along with being a catchy trap song. All of this to say that at the very least Sexyy Red's Skee Yee isn't a reflection of great or good music even in catchy trap standards in my opinion. Yes every song doesn't have to be profound, but it should at least be clever to be considered good.
And that's the difference. The bar is set so low for replication of sexy red that children can mimic it. Which is the whole purpose of sexy red is preying on children.
@@thefalloutkid13 I can see that. She's exploiting the lowest common denominator (children) by saying mind-numbingly, salacious things just for the views, listens, and the money, because why would an adult be attracted to writing so obvious and lazy? Music can be fun and not profound, but it can still have some artistic integrity simply by putting in the effort to at least be creative sonically or lyrics-wise. Skee Yee has none of those things. It sells sex in the most dogshit way possible. At least Cardi B would be creative about it lol.
