This is an unboxing and assembly video of my new Sherwood 16" thicknesser with the helical cutter head. I purchased the machine from Timbecon Melbourne.
This thicknesser is effortless and so much quieter than my old bench top model. My new favourite tool.

Always appreciate seeing reviews for the machinery we have available here in Aus because they aren’t all that common. Just in the process of setting up my own workshop and Sherwood seem to be some good value machines. I just ordered this thicknesser along with their parallelogram jointer and drill press during the Easter sale when they offered some decent discounts. Looking forward to seeing how it works for you in your future projects.

I did a similar upgrade last year, from a Tooline benchtop thicknesser to one that must be made in the same factory as yours - an Ascent brand. It is a huge upgrade and like you I try to use recycled wood and it is a joy to clean it up on these type of machines. Emjoy!
@DownUnderWoodWorks
@DownUnderWoodWorks 2 года назад
Definitely a great upgrade mate. I’ve noticed this machine looks very similar to the grizzly model in the US
@cobberpete1
@cobberpete1 2 года назад
Congrats on the upgrade. Yes, a lot quieter. I have the 15". Even with 15amp, be careful not to try and take off to much as it can also get bogged down. You will learn were the sweet spot is... about one hour on a clock face for hard woods. I have put a 2m kitchen bench top over base plate surface to get a longer base to help with the large pieces I sometimes have push through for table tops
@DownUnderWoodWorks

thats a really nice kit upgrade you scored yourself, gotta say im really impressed with the sherwood brand and timbecon in general got a fair few things from them now, just wish i found out about them sooner tbh, now if only we could get a store in sydney and we'd be set got their benchtop spiral thicknesser and its been great but when i upgrade im looking at their 16inch combo since getting a jointer of similar size is such a pain without paying an arm and a leg.

Helical are great until it comes time to change the blades. I work for an hardwood timber furniture manufacturer and we run a straight bladed machine from Italy. They used to have a helical but the time involved in the blade changing just wasn't worth it and even when using magnets and metal detectors to inspect the recycled lumber blades do go more often than youd expect. Depending on volume obviously. Ours can take 3mm off a 500mm wide Tasmanian oak board per pass and leaves a decent finish. We also have a huge Hold drum sander to do the finishing work. New to the trade but absolutely loving it so far.
@DownUnderWoodWorks
@DownUnderWoodWorks 2 года назад
Sounds like a beast of a machine mate. Mine won't see anywhere near that volume of work so reasonably expecting the cutters to last many years
@campbelldavies43

Great video, thanks for taking the time to show us all because, frankly, the aussie machines just don't get much of a showing on RU-vid. Now that you've had the machine a year (or more) what are your thoughts? I just broke my DeWalt and if i can't fix it i'll need to get a new thicknesser, trying to figure out if i go big straight out of the gate or if i buy something smaller again and hope I don't break that one too - I didn't break my current one from overuse, i put a helical head in it and I reckon something came loose after a few months because i heard a rattle, a small bang and the machine shut off. Anyway, keen to get your thoughts as it's a sizable purchase, any plans to do a 1 year review?
@DownUnderWoodWorks
@DownUnderWoodWorks Год назад
Hey Campbell, a year (or so) in and i still love this machine. Its a pleasure to use. I know that higher priced machines dont immediately make sense or seem affordable but i can confidently say this is the last thicknesser i'll buy

I've had this machine for about 15yrs albeit the normal straight cutter head, it's been a good machine mostly. 1st thing to go will be those plastic handles on the bed mine lasted about a month ended up getting full metal ones made. Also if you're going to be spending hour long sessions machining our Aussie hardwood in an Aussie summer leave the lower covers off so your motor doesn't overheat...
