I haven't found any other channel that clearly explains all product codings like this one. For riders who take their bikes to the shop and get them serviced, it might be irrelevant. But for those who service or upgrade their own bikes, this information is key to understand princing levels and avoid mixing incompatible parts; it really saves time and headaches. Great job!

I replaced my cheap ass MT200 front brake with the Deore and I'm impressed with the feel, modulation and power it offers. It's been raining last couple of days and the brakes haven't squeaked either. Only thing I don't like is the clamp. Wish it was less bulky or they had an option of a normal lever mount.

I almost made the mistake of upgrading my Deore to XT as well. Other than the extra adjustments on the levers, there's no point. I've heard the best upgrade for it is getting the XT Ice Tech rotors with metallic pads on the Deore calipers. That will make a much bigger performance gain than getting XT calipers
@TheNotoriousMIC
@TheNotoriousMIC 2 года назад
The rotor won’t make much difference and if avoid ice tech rotors unless you like the looks. The biggest difference is the quality of the materials. The deore lever might look identical to the XT but the XT is made from much stiffer alloy. That’s the reason the cutouts are smaller because the cheap soft metal in deore levers aren’t strong enough to have as big of a cut out. Squeeze a deore lever and you can feel the whole thing flex you can even see it move slightly. Makes the brake feel vague and unresponsive. You don’t know if you’re moving the pistons or flexing the levers. XT and XTR levers are made to a higher standard from much better materials so when you pull the lever, you’re moving the pistons not flexing the lever blades. Gives a way more predictable feel and a better performing brake.

My bike came with SLX 4 piston so I'm not upgrading. Did buy a set of XTR rotors, to up the size of one of mine plus replace another. The rotors my bike came with are the lowest ones you could buy from Shimano and they don't even sell them anymore.

@JohnCoconis
@JohnCoconis 3 года назад
@@LoveMTB I needed more power in the front because I'm usually fully loaded. The heat disapation was important as well as the zero fade that I get from the 4 pistons. I have to say the saint is really rugged and can take a lot of abuse but so can the xt. I do like the on/off feel on the rear and a bit more modulation in the front. If anything I'll continue to use this set-up for awhile. I appreciate the question!

Old finned pads in new caliper for sure would have better cooling with that improved airflow. But it came to my mind, that for people prefering metallic, but riding on flatter trails regularly or having very varied trails, wouldn't keeping bit more heat in them pads=and so rotors prevent squeal and lower-cold performance? (I mean running fin-less purposely)

Make sure you use the correct bleed block that covers both of the pistons! Many people are reporting cracking the ceramic. I'm running the SLX 7120s. I don't know if thats what happened to mine because it looks like there is a hole inside the cup where fluid escapes, but it started leaking after I got it filled with oil. You may want to even pre-fill the caliper with oil to reduce the bleed time. I've had to order a MT520 to scavenge for calipers because there are not rebuild options for these and the alternative is a metal knockoff replacement at $25/pr (one large and one small) that have mixed reports. I also ordered the 7120s from BikeINN and neither them or Shimano has responded to my warranty inquiries. I'm not going to hold my breath waiting. I guess I should have gone through my LBS.

Good video, very informative. I didn’t read all the comments, but the lever is the part you pull with your fingers. The master cylinder is the part the lever goes into. The clamp is .. the clamp. You referred to all these parts as the lever in the video at some point. In the beginning I was pretty confused. The Master Cylinders are the same 🙂
@littlefish4270

The whole assembly which comprises the master cyclinder, lever & clamp is classed in the bike industry as a "lever". The actual lever itself is classed as a "blade". Yes is confusing.

3:02 Is the Deore lever a 3 finger or 2 and a half finger? You can clearly see at 3:02 in this video that the lever/handle (area for the fingers (non native speaker)) of the Deore is longer than that of the XT. I took a screenshot and measured it on my screen and if there is no extreme video/lens distortion this is clearly the case. Can you measure it and confirm that?

Shimano XT 4-Pison brakes vs XTR would be interesting... looks like it's the same, except XTR is lighter and costs basically double. I'm thinking about getting the XT 4-piston brakes for my downhill bike build, what's your opinion on their stopping power/modulation? I've noticed XT brakes becoming common on stock downhill bikes nowadays, and pros seem to prefer XTR over Saint brakes in shimano sponsored downhill teams interestingly.

Wandering bite point has mostly been fixed. I had it happen a few times with the SLX on my old bike, but only ever in cold weather, when the brakes were still cold, once they get a little heat in em it goes away. The XTs I'm running on my current bike have never had the wandering bite point issue occur. The Deores my current bike came with stock did have a noticeable loss of modulation when hot, just like the MT-520s and most older Shimano brakes.

@@LoveMTB well rear always feel worse due to longer hose, but yeah I don't have that proud feeling about my 4pots. Mushy feeling instead 😂 They are stronger for sure though and large organic pads last longer, so less worries about downpours in mountains although I've been lucky with those, so... And I don't feel comfortable spending pretty much even slx 4pot money on brakes. I should spend more on trips to mountains instead of equipment swaps. I'm very guilty of that. again my friend ,another excellent video. thank you for your efforts and time to present all of this. i also see that the deore has the bleeding valve in another position from the xt brakes. to tell you the truth i consider the deore system much more appropriate than the xt one. that is because that you can clearly see that the bleedidng valve of the deore circulates the fluid better and covering all the calipers capacity than the xt ones which only covers half of the caliper, this surely makes for a less effort bleeding procedure. Again thank you for your videos.
@LoveMTB

They say that the bleeding port on the XT allows for a more complete/ easier bleed...
@elenakana5931
@elenakana5931 Год назад
@@LoveMTB it is easier cause it moves fluid in a straight line thus the fluid moves a little more quick. But the deore offers better overall fluid coverage.it trully circulates the fluid from the left point to the right, but the xt must rely to the sub pressure effect for the one side to really put out the air. Lastly, not everyone gets rid the air into the fluid with a syringe before feeling the brakes. to make the most of the bleeding , the new fluid must be put through the syringe sub pressure effect to get rid the air embedded into it. there are several videos that illustrate it.

We still don't see a channel's face! Let's face it! 🤣 (Has a new meaning now) Or face the consequences! 😂 All this is off course only jokes, you run your channel how you like it. It seems it's working. Despite you might wish for faster growth, viewers are often complementing the technical approach, that you're becoming known for. Great work as always 👍👌

I noticed a major upgrade when going from 4 calliper deors to 4 callipers XT. The deore just didnt brake good enough on a fast steep decent and the XT 100% fixed that. They were easy to install and i havent had to bleed them ever since and they still feel as new!

Deore lack the modulation of the SLX and up, and they have the traditional loss of modulation when hot that older Shimano brakes are known for. SLX to XTR all have comparable stopping power, but as you get higher in the lineup the lever effort goes down as XT and XTR have more powerful master cylinders. I've ridden the entire lineup from Deore to XTR and Deore is fine for most trail riding, but I would upgrade to SLX or better if you ride park or a lot of steep trails

Have you tried sram brakes? I want to replace my sram guide t cause i don't feel when pads hit the disc (in my fingers). Sram has like a constant pull, and at some point the disc is squeezed, and i get no feedback to my finger when. On shimano (m615), first, there's true free stroke, almost no resistance to lever and when the pads hit the disc, i can feel it in my finger, from that exact spot. Do 4pot have that "feature" too, or do they work like sram in that sense?
