SHINKO 244 Tire Review (first impressions after 1000km)

First impressions of the Shinko 244 tires on my DR650 after 1000km (and a punctured tube!).
I will update here later the km I will have gotten out of the set, but as much as I like trying different tires, if these give decent mileage, I'm likely to stick with these for a while, really great jack of all trades kind of tire!
This video is just my personal opinion, like when it comes to engine oils, opinions may vary :)
Update: Now 4100km on the tires, rear is at about 70% worn (they wear very evenly, but I did start noticing a few small cracks around some of the center knobs). Front is just starting to show signs of wear. I would still recommend them, as I've seen other riders report cracks on most of the popular 50/50 tires, often the rubber is softer, lower PSI, wheel spinning and wheelies can be rough on tires. Front tire is at 7000km now and still going strong.

Let us know what you think of the Shinko 244, they seem to be quite popular in the DR650 community! :)

I replaced my deathwings with the 244s. No regrets. Excellent 50/50 tire. Yes, they’re quiet on pavement.

i have them on my drz400 and i think they're def a true 50/50. i can do highway speeds and i can do most anything but mud or really loose sand just fine

Just found your channel & agree 100% the Shinko 244’s are a great 50/50 Tire. I’m running them on my KLX 250 . Back roads & non maintained roads plus easy trails. They’re also great on pavement. I only do about 2500 km p/yr & have been running them for 3 yrs. Will buy them again. The reason I installed them was from some Aussie U tubes that run them on DR’s & love them. Great value also.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback! I'm sure these tires will work great on many dual sport bikes. :)

I have the 244s on a Beta 430RRS that is set up for 50/50 use, and I have to agree with you that they are excellent tires for this purpose. However, I prefer a DOT trials tire like the Pirelli MT43 or Shinko 241 if I'm doing more than 50% of my riding in the dirt.

The Swiss Army knife of the dual sport world. They come in a ton of different sizes and all at a very reasonable price. Had one that was defective. Otherwise, many miles of joy on and off road. 😊

Cool video. I like the look of the 244. have been looking at 804 and 805 also. at 1:30 The Geomax mx33 is now discontinued, the new one is the mx34, but neither are DOT rated, I think you meant the EN91. I have ran the mx33, they wear fast.

Thanks for the review! How do these tires handle sugar sand? We have quite a bit of it here in South Jersey. I'm about to install an 18/21 rim set on a Sur-Ron Ultra Bee and want to avoid the extra weight of full moto tires. My main concern with the Shino's is their performance in sugar sand.
@Speedytrip
@Speedytrip Месяц назад
You’re welcome, in sand you’ll probably want something a bit more agressive (like Tusk Dsport for example), always compromises :)

Nice review. You mentioned the Shinko 804- have you tested or ridden the 804? I'm curious how they compare to each other. I am looking for new tires for my KLX300 and am considering these two options. Thanks!

Thanks, Ive ran many 804/805s….great tires only weakness is lateral grip in mud. For dirt, gravel and paved roads they are among my top 3 tires.

Iv looked at these, but never purchased cuz looking at that front tire it just seems incapable of anything offroad. The rear looks perfect for a 50/50 tire, the knobs are spaced out enough. But the front has only 1/4" of gap between knobs. Iv had 805, 705, 606, Trakmasters, and D605. My favorite is the Dunlop D605 cuz both front and rear really respond well at 13-14psi and dont pinch tubes at that psi also.
@Speedytrip

I always run stock pressure and you'd be surprised what it can handle, as long as your not in deep sand or deep slippery mud, it does great. Tires are always compromises :)
@tieoneon1614

@@Speedytrip Well thats what I was saying, they barely are a compromise when air'd down. That why i like these kind of tires so much. Try it sometime!

I have just received a set of Shinko 705's as I pound more pavrment than dirt. Opted for a 130 / 90 rear to gain some height to compensate for no 6th gear. Will see how many kilometers they will do compare to the current Pirelli Scorpion Trail II's. Agree with the opinion on the DR. Explains why Suzuki have produced it for so long unchanged. Just really miss a 6th gear for commuting.

I've got a set on my bike right now. I had trakmaster2's on before and these inspire a lot of confidence where the trakmasters were only good for throwing rocks lol
@Speedytrip
@Speedytrip Год назад
There's a lot of trakmaster fans out there, but I haven't tried them yet to compare. The Shinkos are just good all round, dual sport tire and are dirt cheap as a bonus. Keep the shiny side up and thanks for stopping by! :)

These tires are a really decent buy for most people. If you are a more aggressive rider you may want to at least find a better front tire because there are terrifying if you push the lean. They will simply wash out and you are down.
@Speedytrip

Indeed, always compromises, what they sacrifice offroad you gain on road and vice versa :)

About 4000km, theyve gotten a bit louder, About 30% left, a few small cracks on the rear tire, after many wheelies and wheel spinning offroad, they got quite the abuse :)

@Speedytrip
@Speedytrip Месяц назад
Horrible in what way? Tires, like motorcycles are all about compromises. If you have a track bike you want slicks, if you have a dirt bike you want MX tires. If you want a tire that does a bit of everything well, it won't be excellent at anything :) For what I do, both tires have worked great. If I planned on riding a lot in deep sand or slippery mud, I'd definitely get something more aggressive, just like if I went 95% of my time on road, I'd go with something more road oriented. Often it's more bad choices for the task than bad tires. :)
@RGB872
@RGB872 Месяц назад
@@Speedytrip my take is I’d rather have something that is somewhat lacking on pavement than off road. I’ve ridden trails with these-just mostly hard packed gravel-and found them to be very off putting. They tended to wash out too easily, stripping away my confidence and were not that good on pavement either. I’ve had much better experiences on both conditions with more knobby DOT tires like Pirelli Scorpion Rally and IRC TR8, even the Motoz Rallz. Tires and oil: a sure-fire way to start a debate. Glad you like them though. Ride safe! PS I should have added, my perspective is from a DR650 and I’ve tried these tires twice. The second time I removed them early from disgust. First time I didn’t know any better.
@Speedytrip
@Speedytrip Месяц назад
@RGB872 Ive ridden these pretty hard, including with experienced ktm riders and on dirt/gravel roads the only times they could take the lead was in the straight lines :) Never experienced a slip on pavement, but yes agreed tires are a bit like oil we all have preferences, you’ll find fans of just about every kind of tires. For example Pirelli scorpions are very popular, but Ive had some dangerous close calls slipping on painted lines on pirellis, even in the dry, that Ive yet to experience with any other brand of tire :)
