Who is she kidding? Shirley couldn't perform an iota of what Tina does on stage (example: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T2T5_seDNZE.html ) nor does she have the global fame, the Guiness Book of World Records in ticket sales (180,000 tickets in 1988, setting a new record for paid attendance of performance by a solo artist), nor will she ever come close to the fact that more people have seen Tina perform live than any other performer of all time ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P-y-VPjM38E.html ), even though Shirley and Tina are only 2 years apart in age, and their respective first singles came out one year apart, Shirley never hit the stratosphericlevels of Tina. Shirley would be much better off complementing Tina than being an old, jeaous, petty woman. This commentary only serves to diminish herself and elevate Tina higher. And, Tina was in her 50s in both of the above-linked world tours.
@@raraavis1984 Why the rage. They are completely different singers. What I hate about your complaint is that Shirley was not talking about fame, neither success but the fact that high note was too high. Tina had a big range and the song should be bassed around her range- not Tina needing to fit her voice to the song.
@@raraavis1984Help! Help! Midas touch badly needed!! some people take things too seriously. Bassey is just being funny here. She 's gonna give you the goldfinger and it will help you relax and enter at last that webb of sin!! That will do you some good, I tell ya !
I actually liked that note Tina took. Yes she obviously couldn't do it in full voice so it was ingenious how she approached it and it sounded quite nice. She's a rocker, not a bombastic balladeer like Shirley. I like both women's works, by the way
Wow. This whole dinner table felt like I was watching an Italian dinner table. From the fancy dinner table décor, to the loud and animated people who seem to enjoy a good laugh, play, and gossip, and, of course, to a major a diva being the center of attention in the table, usually the nonna.
...so that hilarious sketch about "not having the range' is based on a real occurrence! What a beastly group of hangers-on! Where does she find her trolls?
Tell these hanger ons not too disrespect Tina turner she certainly had range as I've been listening to her for years but grew up with dame Shirley bassey
This is out of context. She’s not criticizing Tina nor her voice, nor her songs, nor her style. She criticized the arrangement of that song and specifically that high note. She says clearly “ there was nowhere to go” “ it was meant for a group” .. so she’s not implying that was meant for her but for maybe to sing along with some coir or backing vocals I’d suggest 🙂
This was a private dinner and she was plastered. I forgive her as she wasn’t too aware of the camera. Yep, she is bonkers - but her voice is the most important voice of the last 100 years and she doesn’t get enough credit.

I adore both Tina and Shirley. I think Shirley is clearly at least a little inebriated here and she spoke her opinion. Goldeneye was written specifically for Tina Turner and it was a successful record for her and even initiated her 96 album "Wildest Dreams". That note she hits isn't one she'd done in the past (and yes I've seen her miss the note at least once in a performance) but honestly, I don't think Miss Bassey could have done the original recording any more justice than Miss Turner. Btw, this clip is from a documentary and Shirley always manages to give me a laugh during her candid moments lol. Oh and it just occurred to me , I never knew who Shirley Bassey was (I'm a 27 yr old American) until I was watching Tina's Goldeneye video on RU-vid 6 years ago and saw Bassey's video's on the sidebar so Thanks Tina and Thanks Goldeneye!! lol
A LITTLE inebriated? lol She was acting like an ASS! Certainly, she has more class than to make such a ridiculous comment about Tina! If she were sober, she'd think twice before speaking that way! Maybe she's envious that SHE didn't get to do, "Goldeneye", and it said when one's drunk, the truth often shows.... Don't get me wrong, I like Shirley, too, but when one gets wasted like that in public, especially at her age, it shows she might suffer from some unresolved issues!
Exactly! She's getting play from a younger generation because of Tina - and not because Tina is younger (they are only 2 years apart in age). Tina has a multi-generational appeal that spans from the 1950s to now vs. Shirley, who has a niche appeal only with a few generations.
@@ProudNutbush and Shirley doesn’t need yours 🙄🤧 a woman of colour surrounded by old white predatory men come on but whatever she’s probably use to these kind of circles 🤧
Tina's Goldeneye is one of my fave Bond tunes, heck, one of my fave tunes, period. And, I love and have tons of respect for Tina. But, even I can admit that the note Dame Bassey's talkin' about was kinda nervous. Shirley's right (IMHO). Tina's wonderful and a legend n' all, but that note was just out of her range. :-/
She did both really criticized that the song didn't fit Tina and also said Tina can't do "Goldeneye!!!" Note yet in the end she said "Tina could go anywhere" low key praise her for sticking with the song as for the prior music video she shot in the documentary showed that she won't have the same will like Tina to stick to the music video, she'd have quit the shoot if the song didn't fit her style or her input.
The way this is edited there's *no way* you can infer that Dame Shirley Bassey slammed Tina Turner, rather, it sounded like she was slamming the song not allowing Tina to do what she does best because, as Shirley says "Tina can go anywhere!"...the two are friends. Such a non-story.
Bassey and Tina have been friends for decades. Bassey made a silly comment while drunk and meant no offense to her friend, the great Tina Turner, who Bassey has supported through good times and bad. However, the truth is that then, and today, Bassey has got the range and would have NAILED that high note in "Goldeneye."
@@TheDealvin ha but she's a legend and Shirely isn't. Maybe to Brits...but not everyone know that duck face troll name. TINA name is known around the world and who tf is Shirely , a few song hitters lmao the irony
People are absolutely mad, especially Shirley that she was not offered to sing another song for another James Bond movie which is really where she gets her only big hits
Shirley's comment was rude. I think that she is very different type of singer, Tina Turner is The Queen of Rock n Roll and Shirley is honestly known for 2 of 3 her Bond songs. Shirley is pure power belter type of singer Tina is something different..but lets be real Tina Turner is a legend with many all time classic hit songs and gigantic career and status in music industry, many people on some of mine videos asked me who is that woman with great pipes?(Bassey).
Archiduc De Belgrade Tina Turner might be more well known but Madonna is better known than Lisa Fischer. I don't think what Shirley said was fair but bringing up popularity in a vocal debate is fallacious
She's right tho. The high note im golden eye is too high for Tina. And whild Shirley is known as the voice of Bond, she had numerous other hits. Tina might be more well known but Shirley is the better singer technique-wise. Also I don't think she was trying to be malicious she was saying that Tina is a good singer but the audio cut off
Both are great for their style of music. But, Shirley Bassey is known for more than Bond songs. She was all over U.S. TV in the 60's and 70's, and has remained popular worldwide. I believe she has sold over 135 million + records. This is more than any female singer.
They're both amazing but it's pretty hard to compare them. One Tina Turner is known for her unbelievable physique. Of course Shirley also has a great body even at the age of 80. But you can't really compare their Styles. Tina Turner is a rock singer. I would even say the ultimate female rock singer. While Shirley Bassey stands there looks great and sings really well. Which concert would you like to go to more? I don't know now that Tina is retired probably at go see Shirley Bassey but I've always loved his life story and how she overcame unbelievable odds to make it to the top and she's always so positive. She never speaks of anyone. She doesn't drink so maybe that's why, because Shirley does drink, she doesn't really comment on other singers It's kind of like trying to compare Bach and Beethoven they're both amazing Geniuses but they're both very different and you can't really put one against the other. Personally I actually really love GoldenEye and I think Tina sang it really well with the vocal chops that she has and wild dancing like crazy. You've never seen Shirley Bassey dance as much as you'll see Tina Turner dance. If you want any proof of that look at her early 80s concerts especially live in Chicago from 1983
If you think Shirley Bassey is only known for 2 Bond songs then you’re very naive and shouldn’t comment... Shirley’s also a legend, she has sold more worldwide than Tina and is by far the better vocalist.
If you listen she actually paid Tina a compliment she said it was written for a group - look Tina can go anywhere she just didn't like the note - Shirley is a vocalist and is coming from a place of knowledge & experience - I personally love the both and think Tina's last note in goldeneye makes that song .
Give the lady a break...she is only human...and I am sure, not the only person to have partaken in one tooo many drinks! You go girl! Just keep belting out those great songs.
steady on. everyone sounds stupid when they're pissed. the actress said to the bishop (or vice versa) bit is very familiar to me as a brit (say someone says 'ooh, it's so big'! someone will often chime in with 'as the actress...'). however, people are more likely to yawn than fall about. another one is 'more tea vicar'? when someone farts. as if the vicar's need for more tea was being ignored and he felt the need to signal this subtly!.
i slightly disagree although basseys vocals are better than some of the singers of today’s era. she still has to build up to the goldeneye note which she herself has said is a difficult note. she nails diamonds4 forever everytime. she still sounds great for her age & had 3 bond songs which is more than enough for any diva & deserves the big award she is about to recieve ! goldeneye by tina is a trademark song that can be critised by any other artist. its a natural thing to slag other artists off
To all of you clueless people: This song was written FOR TINA, specifically FOR HER and nobody else, by Bono and The Edge. Add to that, that Tina Turner has around 2 times more vocal range when compared to shirley. Tinas vocal range is 4.1 octaves (very rare) while Basseys range is around 2.5. Plus, the note shes talking about is F#5, and Tina can reach a freaking G6, got it? Well Someone was quite jealous...
@@miracabral oh come on, vocally Tina isn’t even in the same stratosphere as Shirley 😂 and she wasn’t criticising her, she critiqued the composer and the arrangement
@@crazycatpetera1404 ha yet tina still more popular and more powerful...the world always knew Tina name but the world just found out again about that duck face Shirely by mentioning Tina name lol
@@worriedboutdeznutz3035no the world by and large didn't know about tina until 1984 , pretty late in her life. Sorry to disappoint. Bassey's been a solo star since the end of the 50's or mid 50's even. Just a complete different musical scene, that's all.
Anyone who thinks that is a slam to Tina is just plain stupid. She was talking about the song and said it belonged in a group meaning even she couldnt have hit it and evidently she was right cause that wasnt one of Tinas best songs.. So no she wasnt knocking Tina she was complimenting her saying Tina can go anywhere but not even the best singer like Tina could do it cause it was meant for a group.
Different folks and different strokes really. Shirley is much more traditional Pop big band Jazz compared to Tina which she was a prototype black female rocker who crossover. I love both of them. Shirley for her classy commanding voice and Tina aggressively sexy showmanship and unique yet powerful voice. But do I feel that comment of her a bit petty, yes.
prototype black female rocker? what the hell does that mean? So Shirley has no skin color just a type of music, but Tina's type of music has to do with her skin color? Got it.
I was very shocked and surprised that Shirley Bassey would say something like that about Tina Turner's performance of 'GoldenEye'! That's a little bit out of character and out of line for even Shirley to say about Tina!
Anybody that thinks this was a diss to Tina is uneducated or deaf 😂 She wasn’t insulting Tina - she was just critiquing the composition and the arrangement of the song because of where they placed the note, it didn’t let Tina have the range to do anything with it because it was too high and she had to flip into head voice
If you read any of Tina's comments about Shirley it's always that she's drunk and annoyingly outlandish, someone she doesn't really want to be around, but tolerates.
well tina hit that note in her 2008 tour everynight . i love bassey but she doesnt fill concerts like tina turner.. barely half the last time i saw her at birmingham . they had sound sheets up and half the stadium was only vacant .tina is more popular and more famous. perhaps it was because it was too closely named to goldfinger. what if adele sung goldenlips haha ! alchohol brings the truth out . however i believe they are good friends tina and dame shirley what contact they have now is unknown
Goldeneye Is not a great song but Tina's interpretation was fantastic. I admire Shirley but I don't like his way to speak about Tina. I think She Is a Little bit jelous... If you want to compare voice range' can you listen "We don't need Another hero" in a Shirley version and She can't do the notes wo makes Tina.
i love both bassey and turner but, i doubt that either of them, or anyone else, could turn this sow's ear of a song into a silk purse. it sounds like it was written on the back of an envelope 5 mins before tina arrived to record it.
OK, Shirley Bassey is right when she prefers to worry about vocal range SO she should care about her mediocre rendition of Tina's smash hit "We don't need another hero". If you listen to that song, you will see what I mean.
The thing Shirley should remember is tina has been vastly more successful....millions and millions more albums sold..... millions more concert tickets so i think Shirleys advice is jealously based. Tina is a far ,far more successful artist across the globe....selling out in countries bassey is not even heard in.
Exactly....how a duck going to be a critic to a swan lol Shirley is just an old hating duck face troll and would NEVER be a legend, bc diamonds are forever and Shirley knows she isn't one...very forgettable and Mediocre compared to TINA!
