It's not even this i don't think, it all stems to the car accident at the castle. Whenever he hears about his self addiction, it reminds him of that night and when he made that tragic mistake which was impacted by the drugs and addiction. I feel this is likely the point, as prior to this scene earlier in the day, Logans assistant, said to him "I know you" knowing.. you know, about the mess he had to clear up in England for Kendal. Kendal hates to be reminded about this addiction to drugs because it reminds him of the crash and it's the only one thing that will prevent him from gaining power of the family business if it came out or was threatened to come up. And I do think that Logan may use it against him later in the season, i really reallly do.
@@patrickbarks997 I think if Logan ever uses it, it would be after he dies to prevent Kendall from gaining control of the company after his death since he's implicated in the cover up.
I think what makes this worse is how Kendall asked Shiv last season to be there for him when he was basically suicidal. And for her to turn on him in this way, so publicly, shows how truly alone he is.
It’s horrible to watch; the siblings clearly, on a deep level, under everything, care for and love each other, and they do the most horrible, vile shit to each other in service to a father who uses them all as tools and who they struggle to remember even one single happy childhood memory with. It’s tragic.
@@kinare1853 yup he did. He thought he could act like his dad and insult his siblings without any retaliation. He forgot that when it comes to PR shiv has way more on him than he has on her, because she didn't have all these public scandals.
@@user-lr2iy7mc7w I don’t know about shiv’s not having any scandals . Although it may not be public but I have this nagging feeling. her open marriage is about to be exposed to the public.
This entire episode was one giant emotional buildup for Kendall. Trying to get a tough skin against all the negative press he was getting. Pretending it was making him stronger when really it was just eating at him more and more. The facade he was putting on being slowly broken down by his narcissism and need to be liked. Then Shiv hits him with the death blow and he finally succumbs.
@@zurzakne-etra7069 yep. It shows while personally he’s vulnerable, from a business standpoint he still holds all the cards. The choice of which of those realities wins out is his alone.
That's very true. My husband knows where to punch and I know where to slice, figurative speaking only of course. We know each other's 'trigger points.'
I cant decide what was sadder? Ken in foetus position or Logan saying "whats this fishing thing I dont remeber" and Roman saying it was probably Connor.
Logan knew all along that it was a lie. The writing is amazing as Logan seems the be the only character that intimidated Romain. The facial expressions and body language between the two is very telling and amazing acting
The thing about me is that the siblings all seem to know how terrible Logan is. They all contemplate betraying him at some point and yet they still all cling to him. Kendall is the only one so far to step up to his father in any meaningful way, but the man is so DAMAGED, he literally cannot stand on his own without seeking the validation and assurance of someone. For so long he could just point to his dad as the only bad guy, and the cause for all his problems but he's just as bad as on his own. He pulls away from his father only to start doing the same shitty things to other people. Tattooing homeless men, doing excessive drugs, neglecting his children, shitting on the big moments of people close to him. So Shiv's letter tearing him down hit exactly at his weak point. Because he knows it's all true and he hasn't grown up enough to accept his flaws and shortcomings. He bounces back and forth between feeling like the king of the world to feeling like absolute shit because he has no real sense of self.
how is she meanest when roman literally endorses a nazi for president, how convenient for you to forget about his sexual comments towards his little sister and towards other women like gerri, and how he literally committed sexual harassment but ppl overlook that part. how convenient.
exactly its just because shes a woman,if they dont say shes the best in public. They will seem like thay dont like women. When in actual fact,it is truly seen that men are actively running this show preety nicely.Even Tom is better than that shivon
Shiv is presented as the left-leaning woman of the group, so the public perceives her as warm and personable when she's just as ruthless as her father.
The only thing that has probably saved Kendall having to go through days of the letter being in the news is the timing of the FBI’s raid. Shiv looked horror stricken watching it, but I can’t tell if it made Ken smirk a bit seeing the chaos and bad PR it will cause for Logan and Shiv.
Logan feels Roman not signing letter is due to tactics when he just didn’t want to hurt his brother that much and logan doesn’t get it and then says downs remember an actual happy childhood moment
Oooh, dunno in terms of drama he is absolutely incredible. His breakdown in Italy manages to be heartbreaking despite knowing he is a Grade A dickhead but there is no way any Kendall moment tops Roman’s dick pic: that shifty little look on his face as he tries to sink into the desk when he realises who the recipient actually was…fan-flippin'-tastic! So, yeah maybe Jeremy is the best dramatic actor (but is he, really? It’s such an incredible cast!) but he can’t hold a candle to Kieran in comedic terms!
@@disavowalf3351 Kieran's physical acting and comedic timing is excellent, but no one quite does emotional vulnerability and painful earnestness the way Jeremy does. Kieran really embodies the fucked up outgrown child that Roman is, but the way Jeremy's Kendall reverts to a scared little boy and a hollow shell of a person under his father's abuse is so moving, and harrowing. Their roles are so different though that I don't even see a point in comparing. They're both excellent actors.
It's so brutal how in his most fragile moments he truly has no one to support him and his family only kicks him when he's already down. Like Logan when he publishes the fake stories of him going on a bender after the failed takeover attempt, or when he blackmails him after the waiter's death, pulls him out of recovery after 48h and expects him to be all right without any help. Shiv and Logan in this moment surely have a reason to be at odds with him, but they really stab where it hurts the most when Kendall is on his fragile ego trip, ready to crash down from his manic episode any time. Roman of course quite literally shoves him at his own birthday party. His siblings at least do love him, but they still hurt him. Kendall is completely alone in the world and has no one to turn to. No one who would take care of him and support him through his trauma and addiction, no one who would show genuine love and affection.
Jeremy does a great job of having your feel sympathetic towards Kendall but let’s not forget his “Rape Me” thing over Shiv’s first public speech as president of whatever.
It wasn’t directed at Shiv personally, she just so happened to be speaking at the time, it was to embarrass the company and his father. Shiv’s letter was vindictive, spiteful, and directed at Kendall personally. Big difference.
Ok that was bad but compared to what she did it was literally a prank. She public ally humiliated him about all the things he regrets about his life wheter he just played a song at her inaguration. I dont justify Kendall but its obvious which is worse
Kendall has been cringe these past few episodes especially as he’s trying to present this transparently fake pseudo progressive persona, but damn did I really feel bad for him here.
Feel bad for Kendall? Romain should get the most empathy with lack of parental love and support from Logan. It’s obvious he vires the kid as an semi embarrassment and least favorite
it's crazy how all of the siblings turn on each other when it is their turn in the limelight When Shiv thought she was Logan's favorite she readily put Ken on blast after she KNEW how shaky he was after he came to hear last season When Roman thought HE was Logan's favorite he had no problem kicking ken when he was already down at his birthday and publically humiliating him even though he wouldn't sign off on this letter...
I appreciate the Shiv hate but honestly Roman is the worst overall person in the show. The way he become best buddies with the alt right presidential candidate last episode shows that. Even going back to the very first episode when he ripped up a million dollar check in a poor kids face, he's the most broken character in the show and a lot of it isn't even on Logan. Most of it is him being the youngest rich kid in a billion dollar family smh.
He’s actually the third sibling with Shiv being the youngest, which shifts the dynamic a little. But yes, regardless of all the abuse he’s hinted at having endured as a child, he has serious “affluenza” and has no right to treat people the way he does.
I can't believe I held off on this masterpiece for so long assuming it would be some half-assed Fox News satire lol, this is truly some of the best writing I've ever seen put to screen
@@ManUntdForever uh I don’t know about that, we know ewan wouldn’t turn against Logan but there’s no indication it would be the other way around I mean he was willing to throw Kendall under the bud
@@Lightningkuriboh well said. But i think at the end of the day, Logan’s still pretty traditional in the sense that Ewan is still his big brother and I think that means something to Logan (but that’s just my opinion, maybe we’ll see more of their relationship down the road).
Not really. She sacrificed huge personal capital to knee-cap her brother. Her letter wasn't skillful, any of the siblings could nuke each other like that (but don't because it risks mutually assured destruction and sinks the company they all depend on for their fortunes). If Shiv had killer instinct then she would of gotten something out of this massive personal betrayal, instead she ends the season just as screwed as her brothers and is in an even worse place (the worst out of all the siblings) by early next season.
I totally feel like he could have turned that around. Attacking him publicly for being an addict is a low blow and she topped it off with saying he needs “space”. I would have still gone on despite what those handlers were saying. He could have made her look even worse and they would have gotten raided right after.
Yeah, I would’ve gone out there and leaned into it hard. The scared animal attacks when threatened, that sort of thing. And as to Shiv’s personal attacks, argue ridiculous minute details of the letter, grammar, word usage, etc. Don’t argue the facts, but definitely don’t try and hide from it.
@@kendallroyclips he really lost all confidence in that moment, and was practically told he can’t go on. It does set up the moment that he sees the news about the raid and starts to smile
except Kendall is SEVERLY traumatized by the way people perceive him. Dude's got one of the lowest self-esteems I've ever seen a fictional character have before and watching his own sister air out his addiction like that was just too much for him to even come up with a revenge plan. I also don't think he ever thought Shiv would do that to him, as they all always seemed to insult each other straight to their faces but never actually in a public manner.
Just like how succession is loosely based on the Murdochs. That family also has its dysfunctions and with the dad putting all the siblings against each other and teasing them with the ceo role without ever leaving his position
hey mate, I tried to upload it but there's a copyright claim, unfortunately it gets blocked as soon as I try to. Hence why this clip stops right before the music kicks in actually I just checked and this here video is blocked in my country (France). It's partially blocked lmao
Seriously, try doing what Jeremy does in this scene: walk towards the camera without ever looking into it, gradually descending into despair but working harder and harder to hide it, with the embarrassment of it all worsening as he passes each and every person. Like a lot of his best work, it just looks...real.
Anyone else getting potential suicide storylines for later ahead this season? Tom and Kendall definitely the two most likely. If Kendall cant take down Logan, he would rather die, a last ditch effort to do it, which will obviously fail.
I cringe just THINKING of Kendall going on a Lily Singh type talk show where he’d get blasted for…… anything. Because there’s no WAY he’d do well under any circumstances! Ben Affleck couldn’t even handle going on Colbert after some harassment allegations came forth.
@@hasna7542 i don't think she is there yet, but she is going in that direction, at the moment she is Ken in season 2, just trying to please her dad, when what he truly wants is one of his children to take him down, not saying it's healthy but that's what he wants
