I decided to paint the Shock Monster from the ads for the Topstone mask from the 60's.I want to paint more loose so I thought this would be the perfect subject for it. Based on the graphic ad from the back pages of Famous Monsters which I have always loved.
Painted the canvas yellow with acrylic then did the rest in oil.
Check out my arm wound.

Man, I'd kill to have a t-shirt with this on it! Rick, would you ever consider offering prints of your artwork for sale? All us monster kids would eat it up.

I love the music with this, very fitting for a classic monster. Also digging this more 50's graphic style that you chose. Very high contrast pop art style. Would make a good movie poster.

Wonderful! I use to oil paint as well. Now as I am getting into SFX I am getting use to Pax Paint. I miss the forgiveness of Oil paints. Last thing you want is for pax to take forever to dry.

If by "loose" you mean "not as detailed" or "finished", then I think you succeeded. I do understand how difficult that is for someone who has dedicated their life to making things as precise and realistic as possible. I appreciate both approaches, of course.

I'm obsessed with the Shock Monster and always wondered about his body, his origin. As a kid I assumed he was in a movie and always searched for it. I think the closest image on film is the chlorophyll monster from the Filipino film BEAST OF BLOOD. The Shock Monster deserves his own movie!

So cool to watch the image emerge before our eyes! How do you do this quick, wet-on-wet style without it becoming a muddy mess?!
