Shogun is BEST SHOW of 2024! MUST WATCH! - Angry Review 

What a contrast: Shogun and Rebel Moon reviews back to back.

I believe ‘Anjin’ was the word the Japanese used for ‘Pilot’ and not foreigner.

They literally had a coach who specialized in body language and movement of the time to help the modern Japanese cast to connect to the Japanese of 1600. Hiroyuki Sanada is absolutely _fantastic_ as Yoshii Toranaga (aka Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate which would control Japan until the Meiji Revolution). He dominates his scenes, even when he says nothing. The costuming is amazing, and I thought it was funny how so many ended up walking around in rather heavy costumes. And I don't just mean those in armor! The women wore _at least_ five layered kimono, and frequently seven. And one poor woman had to wear ten to twelve layers! It's those layers that actually dictated how women walked. Believe me, you are _NOT_ taking even moderate steps wearing that. The sets were incredible and looked, sounded, and 'felt' authentic. One of the things that is mentioned in the behind-the-scenes videos that you can watch on RU-vid is that the vast majority of the cast, and a good part of the crew, were Japanese. Not Japanese-American, but actors and actresses straight from Japan. I thought it was really cool that Sanada mentions how pleased he was that so many of his fellow Japanese actors finally got to work on a big and expensive Hollywood production. That experience is invaluable, and probably played a big role in enticing Japanese talent to audition. And speaking of Sanada again, he was also a producer for the show. Several cast members mention how he would get dressed for a scene, do the scene and then immediate change to rush off to another scene being filmed as producer.

Finally, a show that doesn't waste Hiroyuki Sanada.

I am Japanese and I love Sengoku era(16-17 century) dramas. This show is one of the best with Hiroyuki Sanada's great acting. Maybe it is little bit hard for you guys(non Japanese people) to understand those names and historical background but still, it is a great show.

Is nobody gonna talk about how the priest looks EXACTLY like Alex?!?! It’s literally all I can think about when he’s on screen!

Hollywood should have given Hiroyuki Sanada lead role a long time ago. It’s great to see him finally show his full potential and get the recognition he deserves and also when I saw them boil that guy alive I said to myself, "I am happy to be born when I was born." Lol

The 9th episode was the most explosive I've seen in 2024.

Man I saved 7,8,9 for a 1 night marathon. This show made me cry almost the way those all played out and at once. 100/10 show Also the 1980 original is also a gem

Episode 9 was an absolute masterclass in how to do the "strong" female character. Terrific series.

It really is that good. This show definitely needs to get more recognition, the end result is incredibly faithful and cinematic

Anna Sawai who plays Mariko also starred in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and I haaaaaated her character on that show. Just goes to show how a great actor can be brought low or elevated by the strength of the writing.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it but the English they’re talking (that we hear) is actually Portuguese or Dutch at times when John Blackthorne is talking with Mariko or his crew etc.

Anyone else notice that Yabushige Sama was one of Thors guys in the MCU?

After you watch all the episodes (because looks like slight spoilers for later episodes), watch the behind the scenes cause its amazing what went into everything and how much Hiroyuki Sanada did. He has to be one of the most misused/underrated actors in all of hollywood

13:55 Episode 1 is called Anjin which means pilot, not foreigner. Blackthorne is called this because he is a pilot. This is explained in the show. Not to be confused with Ajin. Don't kill my weeb heart.

Between this and last winter’s Blue Eye Samurai, it’s a great time for samurai television.

Episode 9 had on the edge of my seat for waaaay to long 😭 That ending had me speechless for a good 5 min... Amazing show!!

Toranaga: That's the same actor that played scorpion in the mortal kombat movie I believe.

The moment I saw that Hiroyuki Sanada was going to be in the series I had to watch it and I was not disappointed. He is doing amazing job and I'm hoping for Disney and Hulu to not fuble the series in the long run.

Toranaga made him dive so many times cause he refused to shower, Toranaga wanted to clean him this way, im kinda sure 😂

This NEEDS to be subtitled. The Japanese language for immersion is needed IMO.

Looking forward the finale. Show has been fantastic. But I don’t think we are going to see some grand epic battle so hopefully people don’t expect that. Maybe a battle montage if anything.

The priest is Joaquim de Almeida a portuguese actor. The iconic Salazar and the villain of one of 24's seasons. And villain in tons of more movies.

After Blue Eyed Samurai, this was such a welcome show to break into. It gives me faith for a ghost of tsushima show or movie.

Being portuguese, at first it bothered me to see the characters speaking english pretending to be speaking in portuguese, but i realise that otherwise the whole series would have subtitles and that probably would cut viewership in the USA. They made the right choice, this series deserves to be enjoyed by everyone

Shogun, Blue Eye Samurai, and Fallout have all been absolutely spectacular. I’m so happy we’ve been given a lot of good tv lately.

My favorite show since The Expanse honestly

Shogun is actually Hiroyuki Sanada (Lord Yoshii Toranaga) producer debut. And what an amazing start as a producer. Hopefully we see more of him producing in the near future because this is flawless.

This show is so good it actually got my mom to read japanese subtitles. But honestly, Toranaga himself is the start of the show. He doesn't actually appear on screen as much as you think, but each time he is there his presence is given meaning, along with every word that comes out of the man's mouth. His view on the world and other people reminds me a lot of Askeladd from Vinland Saga, and if your show reminds me of Vinland Saga in any way then you're doing something very right. I also love how Blackthorne's nature is what makes him stand out. He's a survivor, and unlike the honor-bound japanese who will die over the smallest cracks in their honor, Blackthorne values life, and not just his own life at that. He learns to respect the way that the japanese are so willing to sacrifice themselves at the altar of honor and loyalty, while at the same time having his own clashing view of "leave no man behind". He's kind of an asshole sometimes, but he's also a man of principle and that makes him likeable even at his absolute worst. And to round out the praise for the main characters Mariko is the perfect balance of firm, feminine, strong willed, and conflicted. She's a logical thinker who's bound in a three way split between her loyalty, love, and religion, and it's a joy to watch her figure out her own self.

I wish you guys could review Black Sails. Some of the best writing I have ever seen and the actors are incredibly picked for each role. This show will transport you to another world like Shogun.

Mariko is the best female character the last 5 years.

The book is intimidatingly big, but abso-freaking-lutely worth the effort. Read it! And I don't even read that much, TO BE FAIR 29:52 That "thwp" sound effect was ON POINT 😂

I think we got off easy in that (as I understand) the show is not run in Japanese and Portuguese, the latter being the language Blackthorne talks to most non-Japanese people in the book. Anjin just means pilot (as in the one piloting the ship). I read Clavell's book multiple times and still got something out of the 80's TV series with Richard Chamberlain, if just for the setting and a different look at the characters of Toranaga, Mariko, Yabu and Blackthorne.

When Alex gives 6 or 5 to tv shows and gets ragged on we gotta understand that he uses this as his scale for good tv. This is his 10/10. When you see people clap for 6/10 you start to not trust them for your taste. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t like average tv. He just expects 8-10/10 to be up here. Atleast how I figure it. I personally am easier to please 😂

Joe only knows Episodes 1 to 5. That is why his favorite characters are Toranaga, Blackthorne, and Mariko. We all know that his favorite characters will become Fuji, Kiku, Ochiba, and Mariko. It is truly a great story of strong women. Their strength actually resonates in men's hearts.

10:45 AJ, the 1980 version was an easy 9/10 series as well. All 3 main characters of Blackthorne, Toranaga and Mariko were played out fabulously.

just watched the last episode...i have mixed feelings. its well done, no question. characters all have their motivations, but it ends in exposition. thats right, the last episode is tell don't show. also, it may be unsatisfying for some how the stories end. it is deeply "utilitarian" in nature, meaning ppl just serve a goal, like tools. so, mixed message. even if you don't love the story or underlying message of it, the show is well done and acted, no question.

They even use the time period japanese! I was so confused when I watched this series because I recognize little of the japanese. After some research, I find out the japanese is appropriate for the time period.

Shogun and Invincible are my favorite shows of the year. Maybe the decade, so far.

The only person who loves this show more than me is my wife. As a lifelong Japanese learner, this has been so fun watching, and translating literally what they've chosen to alter significantly in the telling. The performances in this show are breathtaking. Yabushige. Mariko. Blackthorne. Ochiba. (Also, sidebar: something was up with OJ's audio in this video. It sounded blown out or just EQ'ed weird, maybe take a look at it.

The Blackthorne actor is doing his best Tom Hardy impression.

One thing they did intentionally get wrong were the footwear. It was decided to be impractical to use the footwear of that time iirc.

I actually watched the original Shogun back in the 80's and it was, for its time, a pretty damn good show. Amazing production value for sure, and the quality was top notch.

10 out of 10 for me. I love it. second have is even better. I think one reason (of many) that this is so good is because it 1. Has clear source material. 2. Respect for the source material. 3. Has a clear season run, they aren't trying to hold stuff back to milk it until it dies a slow death.

They do have it in english, under extras they have the Dubbed episodes.

Btw, the Franciscan priest you recognized is Joaquim de Almeida, and he played (among other roles) as Bucho in the movie Desperado with Antonio Banderas

Shogun is good, but Fallout takes the cake for best show of 2024.

Ep 8 is gut wrenching, no pun.. 9 is soul shattering.. I hope 10 puts the bow on it.

This show is so good at the end of the episode each week I'm basically tearing up like NO DON'T END! You guys already disagreed with this, but I think Fallout was similarly addictive, just an entirely different tone and approach of course but great in it's own way.

Guys what r we talking about.....PLEASE IF U READ THIS DONT GET TRICKED There is really no episode that has good action U get a death here and there. IT IS 100% NOT A 10/10 SERIES At best its a 6 good costumes good actors but the writing is weird Characters who legitimately have no purpose r introduced late and r gone nxt episode The main guy who I guess is supposed to b the audience coming into the Japanese world is TRULY TURRIBLE. Fallout is way better than this snooze fest. The Anjin constantly asks "Where are my men and where's my ship?" He's such an idiot that there's no way it's believable he would live as long as he does. Mariko is Eeyore and constantly wants to die. After the first few times I wanted her to go ahead. The actual Japanese history is way more interesting. Watch Heaven and Earth from 1990 for a better Feudal Japan story.

strongly recommend reading the book. really fleshes out John , Mariko and Toranagas arcs way better.

Shogun is the 2nd best show easily. Only Invincible is better. Then that's about it.

Fantastic show, was rough waiting a week for the next episode to come out, & every one was better than the last. This show will sweep the next Emmys, or at least it deserves too. Great writing, acting, costumes, set design, & special fx. Ugh game of thrones, the 2 show runners rushed it because they got offered a star wars project, and then were fired from that. that's karma for the horrible ending of that show.

shogun, fallout, house of ninjas ... god damn, some really great shows lately

It's good, however as a book adaptation I'm torn. I actually started watching the show before I read the book, only started after episode 3, but finished the book around episode 7. The first 3-4 episodes follow the book rather well, but from then on it diverges more and more with each episode. :( Especially Blackthorne is missing A LOT of character development he has in the books. I still enjoy it, but I also have issues with it. I wish they'd stuck to the book as they did in the beginning.

Having the Japanese characters actually speak an older Japanese dialect honestly adds so much to the immersion of this show.

Other than the very subtle element of toxic "down with the patriarchy. Being a woman is a war", this show is amazing.

Did no one else notice the show just starts episode 5 in English dub after being Japanese for the prior 4 episodes? It REALLY bothered me how Japanese to Japanese speech became dubbed out of nowhere after I acclimated to the subtitles. I can’t find where anyone else even noticed it… I thought maybe I accidentally changed something.

*If you like Mariko so much, wait until episode 9! She had a very explosive performance in that one.* Absolute Masterclass in acting though 👏 😅

Crazy that you guys reviewed this but not Blue Eye Samurai, that show deserves a review as well. It kind of deals with the aftermath of Europeans getting kicked out of Japan too.

Mariko was the star of the show. The influence she has to us as the viewers and to the characters in the show is absolutely amazing. One of the best shows ever made

My only gripe is that if they decided to use Japanese then they should have had Anjin and Mariko speak Portuguese like they are supposed to. It is 80% subtitles anyway so just make it 100% realistic. Having Mariko speaking perfect English just makes no sense, seeing as how she would have no way of ever learning it from the Portuguese Catholic priests.

Those documents (ship logs and Blackthorne's diary) from the ship that Mariko is to translate would be in English or Dutch not Portuguese, she only knows Portuguese ... did i miss something here ?

yup, just a well-written, well-acted, well-shot show that respects the source material and setting... with no stupid forced politics, checklists, "reflecting modern day", mary sue characters, writers wanting to "make their own" and other BS that plagues hollywood shows today.

No spoiler warning, do not expect the show to feature heavy battles, it is mainly a character drama.

Anjin means “pilot,” like the guy that commands a ship and crew. They called him by his job. That was actually pretty much common practice with non-nobility at the time in Japan.

This show is up there with Breaking Bad, The wire and the first 5 seasons of GOT. It's fucking glorious. Episode 7-9. Ahhhhhhhhh. This show gets an 11 out of 10. The tension, anxiety, characters - how close it is to the book and real history, and the actor who plays Kashigi. Man crush!!!!!

I have watched the 80's TV show and i can say the new version is way better on every level , i mean it was great when it came out but compared to this version the old one is very vanilla and less gritty . I watched it in Canada on Disney+ no commercials.

10/10 each episode, is this the best tv show ever made? Imagine if Shogun had the same budget as Rebel Moon. It's good to see there's still really good directors and writers still out there.
