Should a BEGINNER get the Aprilia RS 660 a FIRST bike?? (SK XIII)
A topic that has been requested by quite a few folks. SHOULD one get the Aprilia RS 660 as their first bike ever? Its even a thought that came across my mind when I was trying to find my first bike. Should and could mean very different things. I share my own opinion on the matter in this video. There is no right or wrong answer with this one folks! Comment down below on your thoughts on whether the Aprilia RS 660 is a good beginner bike or not. If you got one as your first bike...especially interested to hear your thoughts on how the Ape has been treating you so far!!
P.S. Not sure why that rider cut me off at the end...smh

“Learning power and throttle management while also learning everything else” is why smart people don’t pick a 400+ hp Mustang as their introduction to driving stick.

I bought a Camaro 2ss like 6 years ago, which has over 400+ hp and based on all the supposed fear-mongering, I thought I was going to fly through a wall by tapping the gas. Obviously not my first or even second car, but I easily felt I could have driven it as my first car and be fine. Visibility issues aside, the car is easier to drive than a lot of 'less powerful' options because of how it delivers power. You really have to push the pedal in to get to the power, especially if you're driving in touring mode. It comes down to discipline. A peppy, 'lesser bike' can be just as dangerous, if not moreso than as a more powerful one depending on how that power is delivered and if they are less cautious because they think they are on a weaker bike.

I think you nailed it, the throttle is odd for sure. I have 4,900 miles on mine and it took a while understand how to smooth out the throttle. I have been riding street bikes for thirty-five years and my 660 is my fifteenth street bike. Everything from an RZ350 to a Touno V4. Someone without experience could find themselves in trouble. between 5,000 and 6,000 it is dead then it comes alive with a vengeance. A new rider having to ride this thing between 7,000 and 10,000 will be an issue. Also it has so much electronics a new ride is not going to learn the basics of riding. I love mine it is light, stops well and ride smooth. Smooth is fast and you can never really use all the power of a 1000cc bike. I sold my other 1000 cc bikes and now it is my favorite.

My story, street wise sounds similar to yours. However, as I live in Melbourne, we have a LAMS category (similar to Europe’s A2,just a max displacements for 660!cc). So I won’t be getting one simply due to the fact that in Australia, even though it’s also offered in full power it will always be seen as a learner bike. I think the stats are about 40 kw/60 is nM.

Pro's: Fantastic, *very* rideable bike. Quite tame at lower rpm, somewhat rowdy over 8k. Excellent electronic nannies if used. Damn sexy beast, very comfortable riding position, best seat of any sporty type bike. Con's: Relatively expensive. Ordering any oem parts takes literally forever. Smallish dealer/service network so you kinda need to know how to do your own wrenching. Some of the fairings are a pain to remove. I would agree it's not for beginners, but would make a very very good second bike. It's exactly as you said. You *could* do it, but I don't necessarily think you *should* do it. If you respect your right wrist, you'll probably be fine, but to get the kind of performance out of it that this bike is capable of on the twisties, you'll need a good deal of confidence and practice. Pretty much agree with everything you said. Ride safe fam!

Great Video, I feel like you were pretty on point with everything you've said. I just got mines 2 weeks ago, I was just so in love with the looks and tech that it had and the price didn't seem too horrible in my opinion for what it is. It is my first bike and so far so good. I have had experience using friends bikes like the 600RR (which was the first bike I've ever ridden) and the Ducati Supersport S that I rode through the Canyons in California. I feel confident enough to know what my limits are and have been easing to what the full potential of the bike really is but obviously at my own pace. I would say overall I have about 1100 miles of ridding experience, So I would most definitely still consider myself a beginner rider.

Awesome video. I agree with...well...basically everything that you said in the video. Took my MSF course 3 weeks ago, never rode before that. I loved everything about the bike and pulled the trigger and got one. I've put approximately 6-700 miles on it since then and I wouldn't change my decision. I'm also in my early 30's so I don't really have the urge to go crazy on it. I think that I haven't really had an issue managing the power, but it took longer than I think it should have to be more comfortable in the slow-speed maneuvers. Granted, it's something that we should always be working on just from the "being a better rider" aspect, but /shrug. Having never rode motorcycles before, I will say it's addicting. I feel like it's consumed my life and as soon as I park it after a ride I want to hop back on it and go out again lol

My RS660 is the first bike I've ever owned. I have never had a riding experience before getting my license. Before I got my licesne we had proper training in an enclosed space which got me around 20 hours of riding time on a 160cc bike. After getting my license I went in for a 660, and it took a LOT of time for me ti get used to it. On the first week I practiced in a parking lot every night. The following weeks I dis drills from Motojitsu. It was difficult to use for slow maneuvers due to its riding position, took a while to get used to. It took months for me to get really comfortable on it. Good thing I never dropped it, but I might just be lucky. For praticing, I would really prefer a smaller one.

Your RS660 is sounding good. 👍 I got my first bike back in the 20th century. It was a 9-year-old 125cc dirt bike that I rode (AKA practiced on) for 2.5 years before I got my second bike, a 200cc dual-purpose bike. By the time I started riding bike No. 2 on the street, I had the riding skill part down well. Whenever I have been asked by a newbie for advice on what to buy for their first motorcycle, I'd recommend a 200cc - 250cc dual-purpose bike for ease of use and maneuverability. This was typically met with an expression on their face that meant: No. I want something like a ZX7R. One time I saw a guy picking up his brand-new Yamaha Virago 750 from the local Yamaha dealer. He gave me the impression he'd ridden many miles over many years (the guy was around 55 - 60 years old). Once his new bike was rolled out front, he started the engine, revved it up fairly high, grabbed the FRONT BRAKE LEVER, and stepped down on the gearshift lever. The rear tire chirped and launched him into the telephone pole across the driveway. He survived but the forks were bent from the impact. He should have been on a Suzuki DR200SE. o.O

Bought the rs660 as a first bike. Should be delivered this Saturday so I'll let you know how it goes. I'm a bit older (37) and I've had high horsepower manual trans cars (600+ WHP in a 3000lb car) for many years now so while I like the speed, I've also come to appreciate how quickly things can go sideways. My first experience on a any bike was doing a 2 up ride on a gsx-r 1000 at vir with a former ama Superbike rider. Ever since then my whole goal has been to get involved with motorcycle track days. The first time I actually controlled a bike (not just riding on the back) was doing a 2 day course taught by the same ama Superbike rider. The course was on dirtbikes on street tires in the mud to teach how to control a motorcycle at the limit. Between that and the msf course that's all the experience I have. Like I said, I'll let you know how it goes lol.

You'll be fine, I was in the same boat (1000whp evo) so I wanted fast. I'm extremely responsible and respectful of the bike and the consequences that come from overconfidence. I got a 21' RSV4 1100 Factory as my first bike lol no MSF and zero riding experience, never even been on the back of a bike. My buddy picked it up and we took it to a big open parking lot. About an hour later I was on the street but realized I didn't have gear and quickly ended that session. Next week I spent doing low speed in my local parking lot and just cruising through neighborhoods. About a week later I'm cruising with my car friends and feel pretty comfortable with the bike. I don't care for wheelies, stunts or racing on the streets. Practice hard braking. I watched ENDLESS videos on tips on how to ride a motorcycle properly etc. Know your limits and grow slowly.

Had a RS125 as a first bike. 33bhp. Felt fast, was fun, handled well. And if you tried really hard even 400’s struggled to get away on twistys. Had a go on my mates RGV 250. Double the power, but once you know 2 strokes it was a doddle to drive. I was doing 140 in my first 20 seconds of riding it. Great thing about 2 strokes is if it gets scary you just change up. I’ve wanted an RS250 for 25 years now…..but this looks a better option to be fair.

Every beginner has different understanding of the motorcycle, they see it differently to other beginners. Some prefer to get 300cc and some cannot wait to get their hands on the V4. It doesn't mater what RU-vid says, what matters is - You know you, so be honest with yourself and don't rush into your outcomes, because this can cause you your own life! Listing your intuition and watch yourself how you behave in particular situations (slow traffic, fast traffic, motorways, open roads) and how quickly can you fix your mistakes because the next one can be worse but it can also be not so bad as you're starting to understand what bikes are about! I’m currently learning on an rs600, as an absolute noob some things I can confirm is the choppy throttle. It’s also kinda touchy and I’ve accidentally sent it a couple of times. I’m a week in and I’m barely starting understanding it. The electronics are a bit confusing so I don’t mess with them. As long as none of the important lights come on I don’t worry about what’s going on on the dash as I’m looking forward anyway. I can almost flat foot it at 5’10 but the weight isn’t heavy so balancing it on my toes is easy when I’m at stops but walking it is kinda hard. I’ve had zero issues leaning into corners, it’s super nimble and it almost pushes me to lean in even more and it’s pretty fun. Over all I understand and respect the power it has and take little steps and I think that’s key

I'm buying an RS 660 later this week, but it definitely won't be my first bike. I really like the way you handled this topic, because new riders need to understand how fast that bike is, and how intimidating 100hp can feel when you have little to no experience on a bike, but I do have one question, how does the RS 660 perform next to bikes in the 600cc class? If you would give your insight if you have ever done any type of comparison it would be appreciated.

Actually have not done a comparison in terms of riding it long term like I have for my own RS 660. But difficult to directly compare the RS to other bikes since I feel like it is the first of a new type of bike given the ergos and power
@englishsteel-nz6im
@englishsteel-nz6im Год назад
Let's say it's closer to a 600 than it is the bikes new riders need to be looking at-- it revs high, it's lightweight so the power to weight ratio compared to a few heavier 600s isn't that much less and it offers more torque. Also it's not full aggressive ergo's like a race replica but it's still fairly aggressive. It's more 600 than it is 650 but it's more linear power band and forgiving ergo's make it a bit more practical. This things a beast at the track or twisty tho I'd imagine it whips up on some older 600s with ease with it's tech and awesome chassis but the older 600 beats it in a straight line and to top speed. The thing about a traditional 600 that's going to scare a new rider is how it goes into berserker mode above 10k rpm-- it's a wimp below 8k and riders don't feel the power til it's wrung out but above 10k it's full send-- there's a reason they were designed like that and it's because pre-rider and aids and electronics you could hold them at full lean at higher rpm's and it wasn't laying down tons of torque so you had little risk of losing traction and then as you're exiting the corner and standing back up it just explodes. That's still why they're some of the fastest bikes for cornering but electronics have leveled all of that out.

RS 660 Against 600 cc class bikes? All those bikes will smoke RS660 easily. ^00 class are pure race bikes, take R6 for example, it will easily take off when compared to RS660. they both are different platforms. Can't even compare them, but the current road legal bikes have not been able to perform practically and performance wise with the RS660 so far.

Here in germany when you start riding a bike and you're 18 you are only allowed to ride 48 hp. Then after two years you can do the license for unlimited hp bikes. Also it's a little bit easier to get your hands on attachments. Furthermore making the drivers license for bikes takes a long time and can be pretty hard sometimes. So you have a little bit more training before riding the Rs660 for exemple. Imo in germany it's a pretty good beginner bike. But only the 48 hp variant.

Here in Europe the driving exam is a bit more rigorous than in the US, and I had a bunch of extra lessons (the instructor didn't think I was prepared), and I'm 37, and on the car I'm quite conservative. For these reasons, I decided it would be ok going for a more beefed up bike, and the safety electronics made me go for this one in particular. Your takes and your videos never disapoints, but I think I have a slightly diferent opinion. The cost of the bike, is high, but at the end you are paying for what you are getting, the cost of the bike is high if you compare it to any other A2 bike, but this one is equipped with everything you would desire. Speaking of equipment, this bike has every electronics and technologies that will secure your safety when you are riding, such as power managment, abs, cornering abs, brembo brakes, good forks suspension, and the best thing it is light as fk. Also you can restrict it to 35kw for the A2 permission. (so the problem with the high amount of HP, will not be there) Obsiously, there is not just one answer as if this bike is recommended to beginner riders, but one thing is sure, if you drop the bike, prepare yourself, shit's not cheap to repair.😂

I 100% agree with your points! Expensive bike to fix when things break. Also, with the Euro license/power restrictions, I'd say it is more beginner friendly. But in the states, since you only have full power and nothing else, it's less ideal as a first bike. The tech adds to the safety aspect for sure 👌

Interesting… I’m in my mid 30s and just grabbed a used aprilia rs50 out of interest. Dirty cheap 50cc two-stroke which doesn’t require any license where I leave. Liked it a lot, went through an MSF and now looking for a first full-size bike. Fell in love with the rs660, don’t like/want any other bike tbh, but kinda afraid of getting one. Everyone mentions how lightweight, nimble and easy to ride rs660 is, but at the same time everyone says 600cc isn’t for beginners. Might be too aggressive, not even mentioning expensive to drop… so now I’m debating between this one or an R3 for a season or two and then upgrade to rs660 🤔

Anyway, I am about to buy the RS 660 2023 Extreme version. Do you advise me to go ahead and buy it…? I am reluctant because of the vibration this bike has on higher speed, I could not see anything in the mirrors while I was on the high way for a test drive. Thanks in advance.

@k4yce
@k4yce Год назад
Excellent talking points however I would like to add a couple of things. First and foremost I'm basically a beginner rider (33M) who got my license last year and bought this as my first bike right after (ordered it and received it the day I actually got my license). I'm also located in Europe and getting your license seems to be taken just a bit more seriously over here. I'm not saying we don't have our own EURO Bros out here but as a whole getting your motorcycle license is a bit different and we can't just buy a 100hp bike (or above) when we're 18 (laws vary by country and experience on when you can actually do that but as a general rule you can't ride this bike if you are 18 unless you have it altered under a specific power level). I have done about 7k miles on it since purchase and I just wish I could do more but time and weather prevent that from happening. With these things in mind I'm going to attack 2 subjects: is the bike beginner friendly and what kind of beginner are you? In my opinion this bike is absolutely beginner friendly thanks to all the reasons you posted and a couple more: the bike is light for its category, it is super comfortable (at 5 11 I'm good but people that are taller might have a problem with their wrists), the brakes have excellent feel and will stop you in no time, it turns like a dream, stock tires are great in all weather types, you can have bluetooth connectivity with your smartphone and have access to calls, music and even navigation (I personally just use a stem mount for my phone as i like seeing what is up ahead and just control my music with it), it has cruise control which is a godsend on those highway miles and probably some others I'm missing right now. Is the bike perfect? Hell no! I don't think that has been invented yet as it is all a matter of preference but it sure gets close to it. Finally someone made a decent, comfortable bike with 21st century electronics. What is this purist nonsense where stuff has to always be hard and punishing in order to enjoy. If there is even a 1% chance something will save my ass in case I do something stupid I sure as hell want it. Secondly, on the topic of rider etiquette, I feel that saying something is not beginner friendly comes down to basically who you are. Rest assured you can yeet yourself off the side of a canyon road with a 50hp bike as well and there is nothing that can prevent that from happening except you! When even baby motorcycles can out accelerate a 100-200hp car (up to a certain speed of course) that's when you need to respect and acknowledge the risks you are undertaking with every input of your body. You are less protected and more exposed while enjoying this and you need to be aware. An obstacle on the road can force you to crash regardless of what you are riding. This is why we, as new riders, should always strive and work within our limits, ever so slightly pushing them until we no longer feel comfortable (or we realise the dangers we are placing ourselves in needlessly). Be responsible, don't try too much all at once, improve one aspect at a time and you will be fine no matter which bike you choose. P.S. I have ridden my bike 95% in Commute mode (lowest throttle response, highest engine brake) which I find very enjoyable and it has allowed me to improve drastically. Could totally use the other modes but I find this takes the least mental effort and I can spend the rest of it on improving my skills rather than having screenshots of my speed around a corner :)

Hey there! I’m so torn between the Rs660, which I believe is one of the best looking bikes out there in that range and the Tuono 660 factory which comes with fully adjustable suspensions and something more. Have you tried both? I currently own a Ktm 690 sumo and have never owned a sportsbike, but from what I see in your other video the RS is ok even for longer trips! About what bike to start riding, where I live (Spain), after you get your license, during the first 2 years you cant ride any motorcycle that has more than 47,5horsepower (BUT you can buy and ride a 95hp bike that is able to be limited to 47,5hp via electronics). There is a version of rs660 with 95 horsepower due to this, limited to 47,5hp and then after 2 years you can lift the restriction (if u want to) and ride it full at 95hp. Then I think, is it really any motorcycle a beginner shouldnt buy/start on, taking into account that its gonna be capped to 47,5 hp for 2 years? Or it should be fine getting an rs660, mt07 or even z900, if they are limited to 47,5 hp? Im in the process of getting my license atm and have watched a decent amount of videos about beginner bikes to start and not to start on, but with this limitation that exist in my country, does it really matter?

We don't have the limitations here in North America. But if I were in your shoes and the RS 660 was restricted for 2 years, I would definitely get it! I feel the MT07's torque might be harder to handle compared to the RS, but yeah, worth exploring in Spain

@@SK_XIII yea mt07 reviews are usually really good because they are made from a more experienced rider POV, so maybe for a beginner, even limited to 47hp, the way it deliver its power seems to be very harsh-very raw, also rs660 having more tech can make it easier to manage till u get more experience riding. Im really into a sport-ish bike that isnt R6 levels of ergonomics/comfort, as far as Ive seen rs660 is a good middle point from a comfy naked posture to a pure sport one. So there are no "beginners" in my country. The driving school will take you about 3 months of riding. So before i even got to drive alone on the road, i came out fully educated and had been on 2 different bikes. A beginner bike is a 300-500cc. No more. Alot of tech will not help you become a good biker since you dont have any sturdy base to rely on without the tech. A real beginner bike is more in line with MT-03. Or lets say a Rebel 300-500. Not a 100HP sportsbike. Its like placing a beginner behind the wheel on a 300HP car.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but I had to lower the volume on my ear buds almost to the point of where I could barely hear you talking because most of the time you were riding around at over 7,000 rpm at slow highway speeds making it scream and buzz, but there were vehicles passing you. I must have yelled shift man like 20+ times while trying to watch this lol. People that don't know any better in the cars probably thought you were pinned out on a small cc bike like a 125-250cc. That was really bothering my ears. I understand wanting to hear the bike, though it doesn't sound great like an inline-4 IMO, but keeping it screaming at those high rpms doing like 60 mph in 2nd gear in some cases just looks and sounds ridiculous. On a track while racing... Yes, it totally makes sense. On a highway with vehicles passing you... Not so much. Again, normally I love your videos, but I had to say something on this one. An RS660 is slightly more tame than a proper 600cc I4 SuperSport--- so, no lol.... but people buy those and 1000s for 1st bikes and what I tell them is it's not so much the extra risk of you killing yourself like others state over and over... but what advanced skills are you going to develop on an aggressive ergo, extremely powerful race replica where your main focus will be NOT killing yourself and controlling the beast without the skills to control it instead of easing into the fundamentals of riding and being able to further push a more forgiving bike? An RS660 is not as extreme as say a ZX6R but it's closer to it than it is something that a new rider should be starting on. The skill thing is for real-- drop your ego and spend a season or two on a forgiving bike and work on fundamentals and you'll actually be able to get on an RS660 when you're ready and ride it well at less risk to yourself and not show up at bike meets with 4 inch chicken strips lol. "I'd rather get something I can grow into" and insert some powerful track ready bike is silly ego stuff. Experienced fast riders blow away less experienced riders at the track and twisties on Ninja 400s all the time leaving the newer rider on his BMW S1000RR bewildered. The best thing a new sport bike rider can do is buy a used 600cc model that's in the 5k range. You could pick up a solid Honda CBR that has a reasonable amount of miles and is relatively easy to fix and buy parts for. An older R6 is a good choice, too

I bought brand new for my first bike, but it was a 300CC so it holds value really well. But I do agree with your POV! Thanks for sharing mate!

Beginner with a bike that hits 60MPH in 3.7 seconds? And a road hungry one that you need to be intuitively familiar with things like counter steer, weight shifts, etc, to be able to confidently go through twisties with - or even just really enjoy riding?... Are Americans asking about what is for superbike beginners or just motorcycle beginners? I.e., the rider would have passed through good bikes like the 125s, 250s, 400s, etc, up the ladder... Or are these riders intent on leap frogging over the ninja 400s and KTM 390s of the world, that with skill, can keep up with the big boys on country roads, where the real fun is, and just going on to the near 700ccs? If going from 0-700cc is the objective, I cannot even see that as brave, as bravery is no substitute for skill..... Ah... Now I'm watching further and you are speaking about throttle control, etc.. I prefer the direct route as a beginner message... You buy you die...

If you've riden dirtbikes or stuff like that growing up get a rs660. If you've never riden anything befor don't start with one only cuz it's 12k new. Get something cheaper.

That's a tough one because the ergos are more aggressive, yet the power is lower. If you're on the heavier side, then power would be ok imo

If you raced motocross, especially starting at a young age...don't let these guys tell you it doesn't translate. Of course there's still a learning curve, but my 63hp/230lb motocross bike is much faster than most beginner bikes. Guys like yammie noob(and probably this guy) are trash in the dirt, and in turn have no idea how much skill is required for motocross. This advice is how I ended up getting a bike I was bored of within a week...
@SK_XIII

I'd be trash on the dirt since i've never ridden on it - never claimed to have. It's a different type of riding for sure. Not sure if you watched the whole video lol, but at the end of the day, only you know your limits and discipline for riding safely with more power.

Trust me when I tell you this, don’t get an RS 660 as your beginner motorcycle. Get the Hayabusa instead.

Its slower than your average 600cc Japanese supersport, so I say a beginner could easily get it as a first bike.

Yes, because I started out with the CBR500r ,and got bored really fast . Traded for the RS660 , and better ,faster, and enjoyable to ride !!! 👍👍👍👍
