Should Andruw Jones Be Inducted Into the Hall of Fame?

Hey guys!
So, I think it's fun to look at players who are on the hall of fame ballot. Each of those players had interesting careers. Andruw Jones has one of the most intriguing cases I've seen. At one point, he was one of the best players in the league, and one of the best defenders of all time. He eventually fell off a cliff. This tarnished his hall of fame case. Today, I look at Andruw Jones' hall of fame resume and try to figure out if he should be inducted into the hall of fame. I hope you guys enjoy the video. And thank you to everyone who came from my video on Stark Raving Sports.

Great video. As an Atlanta Braves fan, I believe Andruw Jones should be in the Hall of Fame. Watching him play day after day as I was growing up and the defensive plays he use to make was unbelievable. Unfortunately there’s only 4-5 videos of better defensive plays he made in his career. He has the 20th highest dWAR of all time (22nd ranked) which is also the highest dWAR by an outfielder of all time. Then to add his offense stats, I think he should be in the HoF. I think he also got robbed of playing a full year when the Braves traded for Kenny Lofton in 1997 and Andruw ended up being the 4th outfielder on that team.

I've noticed there's not a lot of Andruw Jones defensive highlights out there. Not for a guy who ESPN web gems every week during his prime. I think if he was playing today with the proliferation of social media and RU-vid highlight videos, he would be a no doubt HOF.

Andruw used to play so shallow in center but still make casual catches on the warning track that other guys like Tori Hunter would have to dive for even though they were faster and played deeper. All because his reaction time was insane. He would get great jumps and get to the spot where he knew the ball would end up and make an easy catch, while other guys would get a late jump, and then kinda jog while tracking the ball, then finally sprint and make a diving catch worthy of sportscenter top 10. Every time I would see those catches I would think, Andruw would have been standing there waiting for the ball and caught it casually with his glove behind his ear lol
@joel8692
@joel8692 3 года назад
Yup he always positioned himself like 20 feet behind 2nd base and would always have to turn and run back to make plays while also covering covering crazy ground.he also made everything look so easy lol he looked like he would rest his glove on his shoulder as if he was just waiting for the ball to drop In lol. I was a Griffey fan and my cuz was a Braves fan we would always argue about who was better between jr and Jones and he was finally able to convince me by showing me a side to side vid of how shallow Jones played compared to jr
@analyst42
@analyst42 2 года назад
This is a great point, and it highlights the question others have mentioned where they say there aren't that many videos of him making great plays. The thing is, those who saw him play regularly understand that was part of his brilliance. He very often didn't have to make a highlight-reel play, because he was where the ball was before it got there. And those few highlights that are out there show what he could do when necessary. I recall that one of the Braves announcers once said after he made a great play "They say the earth is 70% covered by water. Well, the other 30% is covered by Andruw Jones". What a fantastic and apt description of the vast amount of outfield that man could cover with ease. Halfway through his career I remember thinking he had a great shot at hitting 600 homeruns. The fact that he didn't come close to that is very disappointing, so I can appreciate the argument that he doesn't deserve to be in the HOF. However, the HOF is about what a player accomplished during his career, not what he could have accomplished. Leave that to the Almighty. Don't look to Andruw when you educate your kids on always fighting and never giving up or becoming lackadaisical. That's fine. But the man, on the merits of what he accomplished and his pure numbers - and what he meant to those great Braves teams (and HOF pitchers)in the 90s, absolutely, 100% deserves to be in the HOF.

There is one more case to be made for Andruw Jones... He is Literally the #1 hero of his entire country - Curacao. He is one of the main reasons why I played and kids like Andrelton simmons, Kenley Jansen, Jonathan Schoop, Jurickson Profar, and even Xander Bogearts are now playing in the Big leagues and hundreds others have a chance to make it. Go back to when these kids played the Little League World Series and watch who their favorite player was. You guess it... Andruw Jones.

0:39 he describes jeter as a great defensive shortstop with offensive numbers to back it up. He was not a good defender. From 2002 to 2014 he had negative 162 defensive runs saved. The only reason jeter was ever valuable was entirely because of his bat

Lifelong Dodger fan here. In 2008, the Dodgers were slumping hard and weren't expected to make the playoffs. Andruw Jones was our big offseason signing and despite 07 being a down season, I had high hopes he'd bounce back. I never saw his 2008 coming. By the time he returned from an "injury" in the summer, the team had already traded for Manny Ramirez, and a rotation of Manny, Juan Pierre, Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier had turned Andruw Jones into a glorified pinch hitter. One that was worse at hitting than every bench player we had, and was barely better than our pitching staff at hitting the ball. It was no surprise he was left off the playoff roster, and was dropped that offseason. Andruw Jones, before 2008, was someone I marveled at. My good buddy at the time was a diehard Braves fan; we watched them all the time. His wife was a Dodger fan so he was watching this happen alongside of us. Even he didn't see it coming. By the time he left, none of us thought he was a good player anymore. I'm glad he had some decent seasons afterward but they were nothing like his old ones. Worst Dodger signing ever (yes, Bauer was bad, but at least he produced before his suspension. And don't get me started on Jason Schmidt, Darryl Strawberry, or Darren Dreifort)

Andru Jones by far and large should be in the HOF. His tenure with Atlanta speaks for itself. 10 Gold Gloves, 400 + Home Runs, a Silver Slugger Award, and lots of accolades and praises not only from the Braves, but opposing teams and announcers. What more can you say about Andru Jones. Look at the Braves who are already in the Hall who played with A. Jones; Chipper Jones, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Manager Bobby Cox. Even HOF'er, Hank Aaron gave high praise to Andru Jones. As a Die Hard Braves fan, seeing Andru playing every day, whether it was on TV or in person was a highlight almost every time. Being snubbed by the "So-Called Committee" is a testament in itself that they are wearing blinders and wearing ear plugs when something is mention about player who wears a Braves uniform that should be in the Hall of Fame. One other player that played with the Braves should be there as well. "Dale Murphy".

between 96 and '06, he was one of the brightest stars in the game. he was one of those players that made it look easy too. but starting on '07, his playing fell off a cliff without explanation. he was on pace to be a first ballot HOFer. his carrer power numbers are enough in my mind and his defense was legendary. i think that like griffey jr and his injury bug, fans will always wonder what happened to andruw that stole his game in the second half of his prime. from what i saw, he shouldve had at least 4 or 5 solid years and could ended up in the 600hr club to boot. again, jones is a perfect candiate to debate about his chances for cooperstown. if im a voter, i feel like he needed a few more of those good years to get over the top.

The problem isn't necessarily his stats or defensive prowess. The issue is his perceived attitude. I remember watching him come into the league and seeing his cocky attitude as a stark contrast to almost every other player of the era. At the time, there weren't many Puig's or Jose Bautistas. He was often seen making basket catches and other lazy attempts at routine fly balls. Is this a bad thing? Not if you make the play (which I'm sure he always did). But the perception is the point. Same reason why schilling (only pitcher with 3,000 k's not in the HofF). Not because of schillings accolades, but how he presented himself and his offensive comments. Voters from the writers assoc and veterans committee are old school.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. Mine is he belongs, no centerfielder could hit consistently like him or field near as good as him for l0 years. I believe he will get in eventually. Remember, he retired at 35. No one can change my mind on this one but I love a good debate and other opinions
@Dichotomic_King

@@ramsaybushnaq6993 "everyone's entitled to their own opinions" is really easy way to slither out of a conversation you aren't really qualified to have. This dude played in the same generation as Carlos Beltran, Edmonds, Vernon Wells, Kenny Lofton, etc. He has an extreme falloff, he doesn't have a league average season after that decade and his 50 homer season is one of the most overrated of all time. He's a damn good player and an all star for sure but he's not a hall caliber player.
@ramsaybushnaq6993
@ramsaybushnaq6993 3 года назад
😂 I'm not slithering out of anything. You just named a bunch of players who were good fielders but Andruw was another level. He played on championship caliber teams. Edmonds fell off, vernon wells fell off big too. If he would have been a burden to the league and played 5 more seasons he would have over 2000 hits and 500 hrs he just chose to retire. The second he left Atlanta he should have just retired in my opinion

Andrew Jones hit 2 HRs in the World Series at the age of 19, beating Mickey Mantles record who hit his first WS homerun at age 20. His bat was never what people wanted it to be. He was a power hitter who was impatient and could be fooled. He was solid across the board in the basics. HRs RBIs Steals etc. But defensively, best ever. He played a shallow center, stealing singles, and rarely getting worked over his head. He probably stole around 100 singles a season, just based on where he plays from. There is a great video of Smoltz pitching from behind the plate, and you see Andruw in center take a step toward where the ball was going, before it was hit. The instincts, the ability to run smoothly for long distances to keep that ball from bouncing in your eyesight, and that ability to bring the ball in. He had all the heroics in catches like Edmonds and Griffey, but his greatness was gliding in to make an easy catch on a ball that should have been a double in the gap. He wasn’t great because of the great plays, it was the hits he took away and made it look easy. He cruised into catching shots in the gaps. He’s probably the best defensive OF player ever to play. Even Willie Mays said nothing like Jones.

434 home runs and 10 gold gloves. Haven’t watched the video yet so there’s more that could be said but that’s more than enough for me. He’s in the top 50 all time career home run hitters. He is one of just 16 baseball players to win 10 gold gloves. At any position. Just 5 outfielders ever. Roberto Clemente, Ken Griffey Jr, Willie Mays, Ichiro Suzuki...and Andrew Jones. And he did it in Center Field. Should already be in easily

I know it's fashionable to ignore traditional stats, but I think that's a mistake. Jones' 434 HR is compelling when considering his extraordinary defense. OTOH, his failure to reach 2000 hits is compelling enough to keep him out. Omar Vizquel had 2877 hits - that makes for a very compelling HOF case. That's more than Aparicio, more than Smith, more than Trammell, more than Larkin - in fact, only Derek Jeter and Honus Wagner had more hits as a SS (Yount had a lot as a CF, Ripken had a lot as a 3B). Not to mention those 11 Gold Gloves. Had Jones retired after 12 seasons, he very well might have made it in. Alas for him, he didn't.

I just about did a spit take at hearing Derek Jeter mentioned as a great defensive player. Based on Defensive Runs Saved, Derek Jeter is statistically the worst defensive player of all time with -162 DRS. Granted, DRS was only introduced in 2003, but at the very least he's among the worst defensive players of the 21st century. Basically, the exact opposite of being a good defender.

Now that we are properly understanding offensive statistics and what matters to the game result and properly valuing defensive statistics.... He should absolutely be in and it shouldn't be a question. By the Numbers the best glove to ever play center field. Had a longer prime of his career than some dudes we talk about as the greatest legends of all time and sustained some insane productivity for a decade. Guys like Sandy Koufax were great but even Sandy only had a great prime of like 6 years. It's criminal that he's not in already.

He 100% without a doubt is a HOF player and should be in. It's a shame he's not. He's basically getting penalized for playing his last 5 seasons. If he retires after 07-08 he's a lock in... but for some reason the short bus voters ONLY remember the last 5 years. During his 10 consecutive GG run he averaged 35 HR's and 103 RBI's those 10 seasons. He was a stud on offense and defense.

It’s a joke that people don’t think he should be in. While amazing defensively, Omar Vizquel was nowhere near the offensive player that Jones was. Just because his last handful of years were bad, it shouldn’t take away how great of an all around player he was for a decade. When you combine his offense and his defense, Jones is a hall of famer and it shouldn’t even be a question.

I had the privilege of watching him play every day in Atlanta. He was the best defensive centerfielder I ever saw play. I think the year he hit 51 home runs was his downfall. After that year he tried pulling the ball every at bat instead of hitting to all parts of the field as he did in the past. He tried to hit the ball out of the park every time he came up, instead of using his speed. Had he not bulked up that year, I think he would have been a first ballot HOF'er.

It’s 50/50, I definitely think he should have received more votes in this last ballot. However, Alfonso Soriano is a 7x all star (more than Jones) and 4x silver, and he only received 1.5% which blows my mind. He doesn’t even warrant that chance to be on the ballot for a 2nd time?!
