Should Everyone With Type 2 Diabetes Go Low Carb/Keto

The low carb/keto diet is all the rage at the moment, especially in people with type 2 diabetes but is it for everyone?
While it can provide benefits in the short term we need to consider the implications it has for the longer term. If we focus too much on losing weight and keeping blood sugars down we might be losing sight of other aspects relating to your health, increasing your risk of other problems later on. I'm not against a low carb keto diet but I believe there is a right and a wrong way to go about it and it's more suitable in some people.

I disagree with the the statement that keto is too restrictive. I eat vegetables including homemade sauerkrat, everyday. I eat beef , poultry, seafood and eggs. I eat cheeses, nuts and berries. I eat some low carb candies and bake low carb, bread, pan cakes wraps and cookies. There are a lot of keto recipe sites on line. I don't eat wheat, sugar or rice. I use Riced cauliflower and vegetable noodles for sides. I do not eat sugary fruits or drink milk but have berries and almond milk if I want. I don't use many keto products but I will on occasion get low carb cereal if I feel like it. All this with average daily net carbs below 40 grams, 2000 total calores daily at 50 years old and 5' 9" tall. My urine and blood test high for ketones everyday. I lost alot of fat from my body. I had to buy new clothes for the thinner me. I am mentally clearer and feel more calm. It took about two weeks to get over carb cravings that were strong like when I quit alcohol 9 years ago. I only get them now if I eat a piece of birthday cake or something like it to be polite. They go away in a day and I am back on keto.. My doctor took me off meds for my type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I follow the advise of medical doctors such as Sarah Hallberg, Jason Fung and Stephen Phinney. They have reported and peer reviewed success with patients in clinical, medical and athletic settings. I don't just live on eggs, bacon and steaks. Of course, carbs aren't evil or bad but excessive carbs have been for me. Oh, and the body prioritizes alcohol use prior to carb use but I know from painful experience it is not a good fuel source for me. Excess carbs aren't either. I am no longer hungry all the time. I don't have food cravings all the time and I don't have carb crashes. I'm no longer on meds and butter has not killed me or sent my lab results out of healthy ranges. I say ,try keto. Give it time to work. Not a few days but at least a month. Listen to the doctors who are experts in this field. Don't shy away from salt. Take slo-mag and fish oil. I did and had no keto flu or cramps. Drop your daily carb amounts over a month before you go keto. Its easier an gentler than diving right in. Shut off the flood of excess carbs but don't eliminate them completely in the long-term. A piece of frosted birthday cake never sent by blood sugar out of control and I was back eating keto right away. Now the only time I crave sugary food is for a day or so after I have some. So I keep it to a Manageable minimum without being a jerk and insulting some one at a social event as if I took religious vows to never eat a carb again. That's just absurd and so is saying that keto is too restrictive, limited, boring or without variety. I think this pharmacist with a handful of certs ( see her website). means well but may be biased from the outset. I have read there are even vegans who eat keto without animal products. I could with almond flour, coconut flour, coconut oil and other plant substitutes if I wanted to, so being plant based is no excuse not to try it. Get off the excessive carb/insulin roller coaster and see how it makes you feel for yourself. Be careful about your meds and work with your doctor. I did not need them after a couple months but worked with the Doc so didn't get low blood sugar or any other symptoms from their unnecessary continued use. I wish Good health to all of you.

I think it’s hilarious to describe keto eaters as insulin resistant despite nice low and stable blood sugars, not to mention weight loss and not having all those other metabolic disorders. If you want to eat an occasional carb rich food, you can just make sure you eat fat, protein and/or fiber before. You won’t have a big spike then. Overweight people who continue to eat carbs and have serious insulin resistance and sky-high glucose levels are the ones who are at an increased risk for all sorts of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases.

I've been eating low-carb/low-calorie diet for 3 months, I've lost 35 lbs. and my A1c went from 8.1 in April to 6.1 now in August. I also walk about 2 miles per day. Had a quadruple bypass in May which really motivated me to change my lifestyle.

Oh, those poor keto people, they’re not eating the high carb foods and all that fructose that makes them want to eat and eat. Instead they’re satiated. That’s tough! And you can still eat a lot of fiber while on keto in the form of greens and non-starchy vegetables. Plus, our body has no essential need for carbs. And guess what, no real need for fiber.

Huge thanks for the solid, detailed information regarding such a complex and controversial topic. I find it easy to get confused between the WFPB and LCHF communities; both seem to have strong evidence to support their sides. This helps clear things up. Very well done and much appreciated.

Hello Juliet. Very good video, congratulations! I discovered your channel yesterday, and I'm already watching several videos. I'm 56 years old, I'm from Brazil, and 3 months ago I weighed 91kg and had glycated hemoglobin at 8.5 and fasting blood glucose at 124. I didn't follow the keto diet strictly, but I reduced 100% of carbohydrates and processed foods, focusing on whole & natural foods, such as vegetables, salads, fish, lean meat, seeds and nuts, but without exaggerating protein. Fruits, just avocado and pomegranate. I don’t use seed oils, just extra virgin olive oil, and to cook, coconut oil and pig lard. I have also been doing 18h intermittent fasting and sometimes OMAD, with excellent tolerance. I consume a lot of fiber, homemade sauerkraut, and a series of natural supplements to lower blood sugar, in addition to metformin, prescribed by the doctor. In these 3 months, my weight went to 77kg, glycated to 5.7 and blood glucose (in 24h OMAD) to 78. I am now focusing my efforts on ensuring the functional maximization of my mitochondria, and for that, I do gymnastics every day (no exaggeration), and at night a brisk 30-minute walk. I’m taking L-carnitine and Creatine. Your tip of not sticking to a single protocol, but keeping the caloric intake lower, seems very good to me, as well as in those periods outside of intermittent fasting, consume some 100g of good carbohydrates. My goal at the moment is to lose another 7 kg of weight, stabilize the glycated below 5.7 and blood glucose below 100 (with 12 hours of fasting). I believe that by achieving and maintaining this for some time (how much? 2 years?) the body enters a 'new normal' and liver and pancreatic function returns to normal, which would allow me the luxury of eating a pizza once a month, or have a glass of beer every two weeks. What do you think?

39:20 - NOT the case AT ALL. Literally every superfood you can think of known to man is allowed on KETO. The types of food allowed to be eaten on a KETO diet are prolific. Let’s say 40g of carbohydrates are one’s allowance on their Keto diet. The amount of carbohydrates from fiber are voided from the total amount of carbohydrates since fiber is not digested. That would mean a person can eat 6 cups of Green leaf salad and not affect their state of ketosis. Vegetables are almost unlimited on keto depending on the starch, GI, and Glycemic Load. Berries and Low GI fruits are often allowed also. One rudiment of KETO is that it is not a calorie restrictive diet and counting calories is not keto at all. I do believe that calories will be lost on keto, but a plant based diet that is low in fat and low in refined carbs is going to have a calorie deficit too. An overweight diabetic person eating your meals is going to have a substantial caloric deficit if they stay on it. If anything, a vegan diet is harder to sustain. Usually people like fats or sugar carbs. Limit both along with low protein meals and they will either find it doesn’t taste so good or it isn’t filling. Tofu, lentils, and starches aren’t essential for a fun and healthy diet. There’s plenty of other foods to get our nutrients from, and even those foods (tofu, lentils, potatoes) can still be under the 50g some can stay in ketosis with.

Keto diet doesn't mean you're over consuming fat. Keto diet means you're not consuming much carbs at all. If you consume the right amount of fat for your body to function properly why would it store anything? Keto is wonderful for losing stubborn fat, avoid glucose cravings and spikes, exercise longer, and so many things. I personally do not follow keto anymore, not plant base low fat anymore, I've tried to follow this for decades and that's what led me to cards addiction. My diet is now a mix of both keto and plant base.i guess. But overall I' m now happy to eat or not eat, pick type of food depending on my body signals, I can consume sugary stuff in moderation, and move on with life, it was close to impossible before I did keto. So in my casse at least, it sure helped a great deal with restoring a happy and healthy lifestyle and better understanding of nutrition. Thank you for the video, highly explanatory, think I can better understand many things. 🎉

Thank you for the videos, lessons, information!! I need to learn more about the saturated fat... I understand about the 'un-cleanness' of saturated fat (heavy metals, etc. accumulation), but if it is clean saturated fat (organic grown healthy animals or wild caught animals), what is bad about it?? I think it is important to get rich sources of nutrition from animal meat including animal fat. We humans, it is much harder to absorb good fats from plant than animal sources. And it is interesting that we humans are born naturally as ketogenic (babies are ketogenic creatures). I need to study on this more deeply...

ps. Somewhere before, I learned that too much fats (Phytosterol, plant cholesterol) from plant sources are hard on the liver.

I have another question. After or during the clean ketogenic diet, losing weight, overcoming fatty liver, but becoming more insulin resistant, does the person's weight gain again and become fatty liver again??

I agree people who are severely metabolic unhealthy really can’t get better without restricting carbs. I’ve found as I’ve gotten metabolically more healthy, I can sometimes add in a starchier carb without a glucose spike. And hey, how about cycling for vegetarians who are leaving out the most nutrient dense foods from their diet. Humans developed their bigger brains eating meat, fish and other animal proteins.

She explains that keto diet can lead to insulin resistance which is the cause for diabetes. Wish she’d show studies or evidence to show that people on keto diets develop diabetes to test this pathway. However, to answer the question directly, there have been studies that have shown that diabetes being reversed through keto diet (see Dr. Sara Hallberg’s studies and diabetes 2 intervention using keto diet). So... this is just confusing. She may have to re state the question, because what she’s actually suggesting might be something else, i.e. people with diabetes can do keto but with some variation (make it plant-based to replace animal foods/products; not necessarily Whole Foods, since keto diets also suggest avoiding processed foods).
@tanyasydney2235
@tanyasydney2235 3 года назад
Keto and carnivore diets cause insulin resistance and metabolic inflexibility. You may keep Type 2 Diabetes at bay by staying in ketosis, but the long term effects of this WOE will be a tremendous stress on the body and result in high cortisol which will age you prematurely and lead to other pathological conditions such as suppressed thyroid, for instance. This is my direct experience as well as that of many other people I know.

Seems that if you eat both fats and carbohydrates in the same meal, the sugars will be stored as fat first? I’m starting to believe you should eat one or the other within a single meal. Has any research been conducted on this way of eating?
@kcockbur
@kcockbur 3 года назад
my theory is that you can eat veggies and carbs, protein and veggies, but never mix protein with starchy carbs and avoid sugary liquids and sugary carbs. I tested this personally, after being vegan one year and being keto one year. And I found that its only when I mix protein and carbs, I gain more weight. I lose weight when I do veggies/carbs or protein/veggies.
@kcockbur

@Richard Plow don’t cycle so frequently, you will disturb the weight loss confusing your body.. instead pick low carb high protein and then adjust your meals to your macros.
@kcockbur
@kcockbur 3 года назад
@Richard Plow then I don’t know what that would be for you since I don’t know anything about your health, body composition, nor your environment or activity level. You would have to try it out yourself and see how your body feels. But I will say for type 2, that would be the ideal food macro ratio to help with insulin since they would have insulin resistance.

Look up the Randle cycle. It goes deeper into her explanation of whats happening in the mitochondria. Theres also looking at the natural world, what single ingredient food has a decent mix of carb and fats except avocado? I also think you should not constantly be mixing carb and fat. The hole in my reasoning here is that there are hunter gatherers in the tropics and they would be getting a good mix of fruits and meat all year round. I've also heard that carbs are abundant when there is sun. So having access to the UV lights, does something to your mitochondria for it to burn the glucose better. Which is probably why there is a move towards eating seasonally.

Insulin resistence is not the same as carbohydrate intolerence. If keto would make you (more) insulin resistent, it would raise fasting insulin levels, wich would lower fasting ketone - levels. But this does not happen as far as I know. Please explain.

I don’t think keto is for everyone I found it to be ok but not for me long term. Eventually I had increased cravings and got bored of eggs and meat. After the water weight I didn’t have any additional weight loss which was also discouraging and my blood sugar though came down a little never came down enough. On the other end I was vegan for several years my blood sugar was regulated however my hormones were completely out of wack. Still looking for better balance.

A healthy vegetarian diet can work, but so few people eat all the healthy foods they need to eat to get all the vitamins and minerals they need. They are much more likely to eat the high-processed foods. Even the healthiest grains have a terrible impact on their metabolic health. And how about all the toxins within plants like oxalates and lectins, or fertilizers and pesticides applied to those supposedly healthy plants?

You may call them environmental..
