I had a similar situation regarding a medical procedure that insurance would not cover, but I just rolled what I could not cover with the emergency fund into the debt snowball, which was about $10k. We also get killed by dental work as well. The combination of medical and dental expenditures has slowed my debt snowball, but it will not stop us.

Like most everywhere else in the world. Its just Americans that are in this strange situation. Even their fire service is not free. A fire truck will come and watch your house burn down, but be present to make sure your neighbours who pay their fire bill house dont burn. The strange thing is you get it, if you put out the fire then other people will think its ok to not pay that bill. So no one is to blame but when things like that happen it points to a system being wrong.

After you meet an insurance deductible, you will reach a max out of pocket with the insurance company. Medical providers are not beholden to that max out of pocket. Anesthesiologists, radiologists, CT /MRI fees, laboratory, surgeon, all of these providers expect you to pay their fee, whether they’re a preferred provider or you’ve reached your annual max out of pocket. Thats between you and the insurance company. Providers will expect to be paid and obtain your signature to ensure that they do. It isn’t realistic for this family to expect that everything will be paid once the deductible/max out of pocket are paid. It’s possible but unlikely.
