If you know me, you know that I’m a huge fan of the cars from the '80s and '90s. However, my constantly broken old vehicles aren't exactly practical for hauling around my family. So today we’re going to review the new 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, one of the most fuel efficient three-row SUVs you can buy. Toyota let me borrow this Highlander Hybrid for a week, so I conducted an in-depth evaluation and took it on a road trip with my family. This gas saving SUV carried us to Red Rock Canyon State Park in Southern California, where the landscape looked eerily like the surface of Mars! Join us on our adventure and find out if this 3-row hybrid SUV is any good!

What do you think? What 3-row SUV would you go with? And where would you take it on a road trip? For those that like my '80s/'90s car videos, don't worry, more are coming! When a manufacturer allows me to test one of their new cars I simply can't pass up the opportunity. If you like my '80s/'90s videos, there will be a new one soon! Thanks for your support. :)

I purchased a 2021 Highlander Hybrid AWD in Platinum trim a couple of months ago and I’m very happy with it so far. I’m averaging 35.4 mpg on my current tank of regular unleaded, and it’s a comfortable and quiet ride with all of the tech I need. For those who are concerned about reliability, Toyota covers the hybrid system for 8 years/100,000 miles and the hybrid battery for 10 years/150,000 miles. That’s good enough for me.

@@hamzahhamed6464 I haven’t experienced any wind noise at highway speeds. I was worried about wind noise after reading some forum posts, but that hasn’t been an issue with my vehicle.

I bought the same trim as yours and I love the car, but are you getting gas tank issues? So far, I haven’t been able to get passed 31 mpg and I can only fill up my gas tank to 14 gallons but it’s rated at 17.9 gallons. I’ve filled it up about 6 times now and it never gets passed 14 gallons. As for the mpg, do you drive only on flatland? I live around hills.
@stevedemoss1891
@stevedemoss1891 3 года назад
@@kenlewphoto, I have experienced the same thing with the fuel tank capacity on my vehicle. However, I don’t consider it an issue. My family and I just returned from a long trip, and there’s no way that we would have been able to drive 600 miles without stopping for a bathroom/food break. So I’m not bothered by the tank capacity. We drove through West Virginia and Virginia, and on the Interstate I averaged around 32 MPG at speeds between 75 and 80 MPH. Hills definitely affect mileage, but I’m still quite happy.

If you ignore aesthetics and the way that cars feel, and just look at the spec sheet, it's mind blowing how capable this car is. 35 mpg in a huge family car that's still plenty quick, with all that tech, is nothing to sneeze at. We went hybrid limited and it’s sooo good. Everyone knows it’s stupidly efficient and things. What most don’t know is The upgraded speakers are loud like you said, with surprising bass. What you don’t expect is that ride comfort. It is by far the most comfortable car we’ve owned. Super nice for trips over 4 hours. Feels solid and safe. We felt a lot more slop and roll in everything else we tested. My family feels 10 out of 10 worth it. Here’s something though. we live in Texas and all cars get hot, But what’s crazy is this highlander feels noticeably less hot sitting under that same 105 sun. You get in from the parking lot and it’s not so bad. There is some witchcraft Toyota infused with the tint or something. Cools down fast too. That seat cooling is a must for Texas-ish summers.

In Australia we have the Hyundai Palisade with a 2.2litre turbo diesel and 8-speed transmission. Specs are 200HP, 324ft-lb torque and 32 US MPG combined. More room and better specs and about the same price as the top-end Highlander Hybrid. I've had a long test drive and it has fantastic active cruise control and lane-keep-assist. I've owned a Toyota Highlander since about 2000, and it's been quite reliable except for some oil leaks in the transaxle and power tailgate problems. Should I stay Toyota, and why?

@@rattanaly169 The Toyota Highlander (Kluger here) will be released on 01 June. I’ve just had a pre-release test drive from our local dealer and it’s sort of the same as the one released two years ago in the US. But it is missing the large infotainment screen (8”only), wireless phone charging and the digital rear-view mirror. Row 3 access and space is no better than my 2008 Highlander/Kluger; it’s for kids only. The slight increase in overall length provides a little extra luggage space behind the 3rd row but no more space anywhere else. The screen resolution of the infotainment system is poor, and the GPS system looks rather sad. However I did find it very easy to drive as it felt just like my 13-year-old Toyota, except that it was quieter when the hybrid was running on battery. So the question is do I want to spend nearly AU$80K to have a car that feels just like my 13-year-old Toyota? Oh, I forgot it does have a few USB ports.

06:30 the space leg is so bad, that in one of my cars I have, a 2008 Toyota RAV4 with the 3rd row, the leg space in that 3rd row is much, much better and comfortable than in this Highlander. While in this Highlander they sacrificed the leg space and space above the head just to obtain that design and that low profile of the car which generally I consider it as a big mistake. It's like sitting down and lean on a tree. Then why I should buy this car if that 3rd row is useless, what's the point in spending up to $50.000?

Batteries are recycled and metals recovered upto 98%. Regarding cost of hybrid battery, if you look at current Li ion battery, it is ~$150/kwh and dropping fast. I wouldn't expect this to cost more than $500. The hybrid has a tiny battery < 2kwh.

Honestly, I would choose the normal Highlander over the hybrid version simply because they last longer. However, if you want something reliable and efficient, the hybrid version of the Highlander is pretty good. It will wear out much faster than the normal version but you save more money in gas so it’s kind of up to you and how long you want to keep your vehicle.

IMO, if you really need third row space, you're stuck with either a body on frame full size SUV or a minivan. None of the three row crossovers offer comfortable third row seats.
