After countless hours of research, this very lens is the very reason I went with the L-mount ecosystem and got an Lumix S5 instead of a Sony, Canon, Nikon or Fujifilm. Sony recently added an insanely expensive and significantly larger and heavier 20-70mm lens. Other than that, no other lenses like this one exist for any other FF or APS-C system. When out on walks in both nature and cities, I find myself shooting at 20mm very often and find 60mm good enough for close up pictures of my company or various subjects. When I do want to zoom in more, most of those times I actually wanted something unrealistic (on a lightweight lens that also goes down to 20mm) like 300mm or more. If what I actually wanted was 70mm or even 100mm, I can just move a bit closer, so the 60-120mm range is not very important to me.
@Ulrich.Bierwisch

Even if you buy the big, expensive, high quality zooms or all kinds of primes - heaving this small, light weight lens in addition is always worth it because together with the S5 you have a very nice, combination for running around and doing hand hold shots. Nothing else can beat that.
@borderlands6606

The 20-60 focuses very close at 26mm, about half macro. Useful for jewellery and similar small scale closeup work. A favourite thing about the S5 is with the lens set to manual focus, the back button AF still works. Handy for toggling between the two.

I love your work Shane! Great lens. Coupled with a couple of primes (and in my case the MC21 to adapt EF glass), I reckon the S5II plus kit lens is a dream core set up. The ability to adapt EF glass properly on the S5II with CAF is a game changer for me. I’m not locked into RF mount. Canon has some amazing lenses. The best are very expensive and generally large and heavy. A key disadvantage with the relatively affordable non-L Canon RF glass is that it is not weather sealed. It is also not par-focal. Panasonic has been strategically extremely clever with their product strategy. They have ‘video first’ hybrid cameras without any (obvious) cripples. Above all my observation is the company is customer centric and respond to feedback from the market. The LUMIX Live sessions conducted by Panasonic LUMIX USA plus the ongoing value adding through firmware upgrades are great examples of this corporate culture.

What a GREAT video! I have the older S5 with the 20-60 kit and I have to admit to having been a been a stills shooting prime snob or choosing to use the Sigma 24-70, but your examples here really show what a capable lens this is. I did get a taste of what it can do on a hike through Zion's park last year when weight and wide angle capability were at a premium. I picked up some valuable usage tips here,,Even for using my older S5..Thanks again!

Totally agree! I bought the 20-60 with my S5 about 1 1/2 years ago and I just bought an S5ii and have used it with this lens. To me, this lens is a "must have." It is versatile, the image quality is incredible considering the price, and as you demonstrated it gets the most out of the autofocus in any Lumix S-series camera. I just compared my S5 using the Panny 50mm 1.8 side-by-side with the S5ii with the 20-60 at 50mm. I set the aperture and ISO the same in both cameras. I felt that the image quality coming from the 20-60 looked better! Maybe being mounted on the S5ii helped but when you compared your 35 f1.8 to the 20-60 I could barely see a difference and it was only in the background blur. Unless you really need the "Toneh" (😂) of the primes this kit lens can do almost everything you need and do it well.

I watched this video some months back before getting LUMIX S5iiX, I really wanted to buy the 24-105mm because it’s very versatile and would be a good fit for my work but I couldn’t find any offer on Amazon. I had to settle for this 20-60mm kit lens and I must say it is pretty good. I have used it for a few shoots and it’s not bad at all. Great video. I hope I can still find a good deal for 24-105mm as I’d love to have that too. I am based in Nigeria and lately I have been shooting documentaries and event coverage.

I have this lens as part of a bundle with my S5 I I got last year. It is a very useful lens. the 20-60mm is much more useful than 24-70mm. Bear in mind that Sony recently released a 20-70mm F4 that costs 900 USD!!! As I want to fill my collection of Panasonic Primes because I want to take photos at night clubs (I have the 35mm f/1.8) the 20-60mm is a great lens that gives me versatility in the mean time in other use cases. And to fill my prime collection it will probably take 2 years. And you can test a focal length to see if you will use a prime of the same focal length before committing to buy. You go out and just take photos/videos at the 24mm and see if you like it and will use it. And regarding the Toneh, you don't need to Toneh all the time.

I assume you are in the same predicament as me -- whether or when to upgrade 😔 The new AF system looks so good, but the original S5's resale value has plummeted, so I'll probably need to save up an extra $1k afford the mark ii. 😢
@boyantrifonov
@boyantrifonov Год назад
@@randomoneforstuff3696 When bought my S5 I there was NOTHING better at the price point (2 000 Euro) for my specific needs. I got it knowing its AF limitations. And actually the AF is OK it is not the best. At the time I got it I also got a very good deal because it came with 2 lenses for 2 200 Euro and there was a 200 Euro Cash Back from Panasonic which I received a few months later. So I am happy with what I got. Technology changes so quick these days. Think really well if you NEED the new upgrades or you just WANT them. Bear in mind you are NOT getting a better image. The sensor and processor are the same. You are getting some conveniences like improved AF, Stabilization, HDMI, Burst Performance and Buffing but not a better quality image (the S5 image is still superb) I have always planned for a 2 camera setup as an INVESTMENT and I will be getting the S5 II (I don NOT NEED the S II X) Unless the “limitations” of the original S5 I are preventing you from making money - do not feel bad for not upgrading. And bear in mind we do not know if the S5 II fan will make problems in the future. The S5 I does not have it. I love my S5 I
@randomoneforstuff3696
@randomoneforstuff3696 Год назад
@@boyantrifonov lol I'm not usually a freelancer. I have the occasional wedding photoshoot here and there, but by and large upgrading gear doesn't make me any money. I use my money from other places to pay for camera upgrades that don't really pay themselves off monetarily. I just do sports photography as a hobby, and the S5's burst rate is quite slow as well, and its AF for fast moving subjects is just awful (I get like a 30% hit rate). But, you've got a point in that investing another $1k into a body that I don't need isn't really hindering me for the most part.
@boyantrifonov
@boyantrifonov Год назад
@@randomoneforstuff3696 In my case I am investing for my RU-vid channel which will be mostly talking head. Since last year I have planned for a 2 camera setup. So instead of getting a Sony A7S III and 1 cheap lens I will be getting 2 Panasonic Lumix cameras the S5 I and the S5 II and 3 good lenses. The S5 II will help me shoot some extra things but my S5 I will be my second camera angle or permanent talking head camera so it will get plenty of use. And if one of my bodies needs servicing I will have the other to work and not miss shooting a video. However after I get the S5 II I will not really care about cameras for a minimum of 5 years if not more. I do not plan to earn money from photography / videography but I need to use videography / photography to earn money lol.

Sadly, no. I wonder if Panasonic will bring out an L-Mount to MFT adapter at some point down the track.

Every time I see reviews that the autofocus is good, I get frustrated. Since watching your video, the autofocus of my S5IIX behaved like that of the S5 or maybe worse. And I end up returning it.

Then you have no idea what you're doing. The S5II/S5IIX AF is nothing like the S5. If you couldn't get it to work, you did something wrong. There's no two ways about it.

@@GeekyNerdyTechy Maybe that's it. I looked for autofocus tutorials, change the types of focus (Human, face and eye), Focus area, sensitivity and speed, perform the update. And the result was the same as with the factory setting. The interesting thing is that you gave an example of the autofocus of the S5 and my S5IIX focused the same. Maybe mine arrived defective, but my ZV-E10 focused much better. It was frustrating to see videos of people like yours, who did tests with the camera without adjustments and it worked very well for them and mine didn't. The truth is that I wanted to believe that the problem was me and not the camera. Because I did not want to return it, but I did not get an answer or solution.

Yes, background blur is over used! I see a lot of photographers wasting a lot of time and money trying to achieve something that they do not need.

Panasonic is killing it with the lack of focus breathing on their lenses.

Agreed. No digital crops to cover up poor optics required. :)

I prefer the kit lens 24-105 f4 , much more useful . If you already spends thousand on the camera body then do not get this 20-60 but spend a bit more to get the 24-105 . This combo is good for everything from land scape , portrait , general shooting , macro , day light and low light night time . Especially for someone who only one camera / one lens , you can find plenty used 24-105 in excellently condition and this lens is perfectly with the S5ii .

Probably not anymore. I got rid of most of my rack units and got a Rodecaster.

Why is there no wobble waves at 20mm vs the sigma 16-28 at 20mm, the amount of waves on the sigma is horrible and your footage has none.

@@GeekyNerdyTechy your footage is looking good, the 20-60 has no wobbles at 20mm. I just wonder why if we look at the sigma 16-28 lens, at 20mm it will have tons of wobbles

I would actually recommend getting any prime lens with affordable f1.8 instead of these kit lenses with awful f3.5-5.6. I think with these kit lenses you barelly create anything interesting. Maybe only landscape photography being exception. The image is just like from your phone and you're really killing the power of full frame camera such as S5. One light prime lens will make you smile much more often than these kit lenses. I don't know any person who has only kit lens and still uses his camera after few years. They're just taking phones instead.

You sound like every other RU-vidr who thinks a prime will suit everyone at every level. The image is nothing like a phone. There's a time and place for a versatile zoom lens and for only a few bucks more you get something I use a lot, especially outdoors. Go blur your backgrounds to death if you want to. If you're shooting products 1.8 or faster is pointless as you'll be stopping down to 3.4 at the bare minimum.

You're right sir. There is time and place for these zoom lenses. I'm glad you're happy with it.

Eradicating backgrounds is the latest photographic craze and hopefully goes the way of the dinosaur soon. Who wants an eye in focus and the rest of the face blurred. No pro worth his salt shot like that when I started in the 1980s. The only advantages of 1.8 or faster is for low light. Other than that I want to see where my subject is, especially when travelling around the world, so f2.8 to f4 is fast enough for me.
