He doesn’t say to cut down first and then lift weights. He said to cut down first and then you can start consuming more calories. You need resistance training for the duration of your weight loss/shredded journey.

Regardless of your bodyfat percentage, resistance training is ALWAYS a good idea. EVERYTHING on the body works best when you are healthy level of bodyfat, but that doesn't mean you need to wait until the fat is gone to start resistance training. Besides, the first 3 to 6 months of lifting is mostly your central nervous system getting used to performing the movements.
@GeneralSpecific3
@GeneralSpecific3 3 года назад
Yes but that's not what this video is about. He never claimed you should avoid resistance training if you are fat or obese. He simply stated that you should cut down the fat prior to making an attempt at building muscle. Especially so when building with a high caloric surplus

My experience having been off of my feet for 10 months due to an injury is that it is EXTREMELY important to have some muscle. I was in the obese range and fasting made me lethargic. When I started lifting weights and fasting IF, my weight loss improved and my energy and attitude soared. I am going to now work with the info in this video and get out of the "overweight" range ASAP, i.e. longer fasts, and see how my progress goes. Thank you, Thomas, for your excellent work. I will be studying more videos to see how to go about fasting.

I’m 252lbs 6’2 with a lot of visceral fat on my belly I will be lifting full body 3 sets each 5 days a week for 1 month and doing 1 mile a day walk/job while eating 1800 calories a day I say do both lowers calories weights and cardio that way I may not gain the muscle mass but I will retain as much as possible while losing the weight once I drop the fat then I can increase calories take out cardio and switch to 3 days a weak instead of 5 days full body weights

When you're too thin, you can't gain much muscle mass, no matter what. I lifted like crazy in my 20's and never put on more than an inch or 2 of muscle mass. Fast forward to when I am 40, weighing 50 pounds more from eating like crap for many years. With the extra body weight, I hit the gym and ended up benching literally twice as much weight as what I was in my 20's. My workout routine includes benching 270lbs 50 times per day and curling 140lbs 50 times a day (5 sets of 10 each) along with butterfly, triceps, and legs (also 50 reps per day each). At 45 years old I have WAY more muscle than what was even possible when I was too thin, I'm BY FAR the strongest I've ever been, thanks to getting fat to turn into muscle..

Started at 295 in mid-February. Started Keto, then Keto + OMAD. Currently down to 245, a loss of 50 lb. Started going to the gym every other day 3 weeks ago and I don't know if its helping at all with the weight loss and haven't gained any muscle mass, but I know I feel better each day I go to the gym to work out. If nothing else, it's upped my stamina and I can clearly see the beneficial effect of my diet as I tend to still have energy to burn even after a rough workout. I wish I could go to the gym and exercise every day and I never imagined myself feeling that way before I started Keto diet.

This is very interesting and thanks for always sharing such wonderful information. For me, however, I think it is also case by case basis. I have insulin resistance and have struggled for 20 years in combatting the weight. After ramping up my calorie intake and weight training, I am looking leaner as I go through the bulking phase. At the moment the benefits I have gained through eating high calories while essentially maintaining my fat has been tremendous. I am not in the cutting phase yet and it will be interesting to see what happens next. I will definitely reference back to this video to consider a new approach if it does not work.

I don't know if I agree with this. For years I been trying to lose weight as someone obese. It's yo-yo dieting on keto. I went to the gym off and on for strength, and keep running into setbacks with personal life. So I decided to screw fat loss and go straight into hypertrophic exercise routine. Ramping up my protein, getting rid of wheat/gluten.. Work on same muscle groups twice a week. My muscles over the last month has gotten much stronger with more muscles, it's like the muscle are sucking the fat right out of me. Im eating more than I ever done, but looking much more lean. I'm walking everyday, and making the walk harder every week too. It was taking its toll the first couple of weeks, but I'm adapting quickly. I feel cutting first then going for muscle doubles the length to get the dream which might be discouraging. And it's really easy to say if you don't have to deal with it.

Alr then this helped me a lot (and some comments left by people as well who seem speak from experience) cause I’ve been sore as F and workouts are sooooo harder than I think they should be so I was like MAYBE I should just focus on cutting down fat first before starting to work out. Maybe when I’m down to like 30 lbs over my “normal” weight of 160 I can try my hand at working out again. I’ve already proved to myself that I can wake up early and have a routine of working out every day on different muscle groups so in the mean time, I can just read and watch videos and find what’ll work for me when the time comes I guess. I am currently 256 which is roughly 100 lbs over what I should be for my height of 5’7 and I’m so done being stuck in the 200’s. At one point in 2019, I had gotten down to 207!!!

I have one question i never hear anyone discuss, maybe its only related to me, and its what happens if you fast the day after a heavy weights work out. I do a complete no food fast one day a week on a monday, but because of my schedule i usually do weights on a weekend. If i train weights on a Sunday enough to get sore, does fasting the next day cause problems repairing and building the muscles back up. Will it stop any gains in strength? DO i need to compensate by having higher amounts of protein on the weekend? I am carrying at least an extra 30kgs of fat, so i am fasting, a bit of cardio through the week (i hit the heavy bag for 6 to 8 rounds on a tuesday and thursday), and doing weights on the weekend. The weight is coming off slowly but consistently
@keithturkjr.8676
@keithturkjr.8676 3 года назад
@@MrSoggyjocks I think you're hurting yourself a little bit. If the body doesn't have or receive the needed nutrient building blocks while the muscle building stimulus is fresh (2-6 hours) the body will catabolize amino acids from muscles you currently have to acquire the amino acids it needs to repair the micro-tears in the muscle fibers created by the exercise. . Exercising prior to a fast can increase human growth hormone (HGH) and make the body avoid converting muscle into fuel, but the HGH is only partially successful because catabolic stuff still has to occur for the repairs. Basically if you lift weights hard and don't feed the need, the body will pull amino acids it needs for repairs and then simply not grow,... Here is the way I effectively lose weight: 1- eat 20% more grams of protein than you think your body needs daily if you can use 100 grams then eat 120 grams of protein,...its only 500ish calories, so its still just a fraction of what you can have. Some things have to go to the wayside to create a deficit but hit the protein target everyday to avoid catabolism of muscle tissue. 2-I skip breakfast and drink lots of black coffee to kill my appetite earlier in the day and create a big calorie deficit that is kind of hard to ruin in the last third of my day. Then I'll be so hungry Im ready to give in,...handful of almonds and then run away from the food and get busy at work,...I stole another hour or two for only 100 calories,....I might have to do that again,... it wont work as well the second go around,.... but the work day is almost over. I get home I'm downright hangry lol but I've also made to 6pm on only 230ish calories,....so I can eat a lot and get truly stuffed now,... and still be in a pretty good deficit. I eat the protein part early in the meal and get full faster. But getting genuinely full at some point in the day is important to me emotionally. When I diet like this I never feel like I've been slowly starving myself for 5 weeks because I was completely full just last night. 3- I usually go to the gym about 2 hours after that big meal. I might have been in a very significant calorie deficit all day but after the dinner this workout is well fueled and has the building blocks it needs for the growth orders I give it. Then I workout pretty hard,.... after work its not too hard to bring on a substantial fatigue level,...pretty much go until I feel like I have nothing left . If I'm that tired I probably wont be hungry,...but if I want it I'll do a protein shake that's only 100-200 calories before bed. I don't really need the protein so much because of the recent meal but it does top me off before bed. I find it much easier to part with the meals calories during my workout if I know I wont have to go to bed hungry.

I wish he and others would give a very basic explanation in layman’s terms first, then do the breakdown. I think I’d follow these videos better. One of these days I’m going to sit down with pen and paper. Slow the video down. Stop it, take notes. Google if need be. Or find the study that he’s talking about and make myself read through. I’m on a journey to lose 60 pounds and gain muscle and keep bone density. In six weeks I’ve lost 20 pounds but have gained fat %. So today I’m looking for answers on that. I'm 45 and I've been working out for 2 years, at least 3 days a week. I've gone through a stage of beginner gains with most of my weights. For a few months in the 2nd year I worked with a trainer and bulked. I gained 15 lbs and some muscle, but not enough to justify feeling like crap. In the past 3 months I've lost 15 lbs. I also have lost some strength, but not much? And I feel a lot better. I am going to get my BMI from the low 20's to 12 to 15 percent. Then I am going to maintain that BMI and gain muscle slowly. I think that is much better plan. I feel like I'll actually get to see my muscles grow and know what is happening. Its too hard to be a beginner, not know anything about how muscles should look, and try to grow muscles too! I'd rather get my body fat AND eating under control. Once I learn how to control my calories, protein, carbs, and fat, then I will start to add more muscle. I think any other way kind of sets you up for failure. Most people go to the gym to lose fat and control BMI. The next thing they know they are "bulking" and they haven't even mastered food intake lol.

I had a hip issue and went high-protein for a couple months (still keto, except right after resistance training, when I went lean.) I added fat and lean mass. I'm rehabilitated and cutting again, with more moderate protein. I figure if I'd eaten less fat when I was eating keto, I might have done a little better, but I didn't want to chance missing essential aminos.

I think you can start strength training even if you are not trying to build muscle yet. just do the strength exercise but don't eat that much calories which you normally do in gaining muscle.... So while you are losing fat and dieting you already develop the habit of going to the gym and weight training routine.

My smoothies contain lot fat, plant protein 1tablespoon, blueberries and a qrt. of a banana. 2-3 eggs a day. Trying to regain muscle with resistance bands. Question what else can I do to regain what muscle i had! I am worried about my bone mass?

Actually studies indicate exercise is much more important than mere weight reduction. But then "body building" is not any more healthy than dieting for appearance sake. Vanity does not promote positive ends.

Well it's also probably because the overweight group had more insulin resistance thus less protein synthesis.

With that being said every morbidly person that dropped the weight and became healthy all say they wish they started out lifting weights. I'm doing that rn and its working just fine. So if you have a significant amount of fat to lose its better to lose fat without lifting if you want to maximize the first year newbie gains. Get lean via nutrition/caloric defecit and cardio. Then after your lean start lifting to maximize that first year of newbie gains?

Strongly disagree, you should always build muscle first and for two main reasons, building muscle will speed up your metabolism, which will 1 make losing weight significantly easier when you do start, and 2 keep that weight off if you stop or break from your diet, and yes I am speaking from experience.

Same here: I am currently on a strict: 30 sec pause at most for my weight trainingand to really stick to that and I see that it gets me sweating really great, But it also shows me I need to put in more effort in my cardio and general just do more activity in the week and really eat a lean diet and not fall back into bad habits so my pounds can start falling (Fat pounds,) It takes time and the muscle growth wont be optimal but it will still happen. And still help. with passsive burning.
@AMGTT

You do both if you have a lot of belly fat you go in a calorie deficit while lifting weights with few days of cardio as you come down in weight lost the belly fat to a ok level you can actually cut back in cardio focus on weights and increase your calories from there u can now do cycle build muscle with increased calories and when u want to lean out lower calories
@joemann7971
@joemann7971 2 года назад
@@AMGTT even if you don't build muscle, lifting weights will at the very least spare the muscle you already have. So, there really is no reason to need to wait until you lose the weight. Plus, the exercise will still burn more calories. So, even if you can't build muscle, you will at least burn more fat eventually leading to the same results.

What are you strongly disagreeing with? I realize this is a 2 year old comment. The studies support the idea that it is more optimal to lose the fat first before a serious attempt to build muscle. It doesn’t indicate that you won’t build muscle while overweight. Doesn’t indicate you won’t build muscle on a bulk while overweight.

How did they measure the muscle gain in that study? 4500 cal sounds like it’s way over maintenance (assuming they’re not athletes) so the 6k group probably put on more fat and had higher water retention which could be mistaken for muscle mass in dexa scans (if that’s what they used)

I think my point is that is it a daily transition we have to go through when following the keto diet daily.. or can you just stay in ketosis everyday without dipping in and out??.. I was in ketosis yesterday then when I woke up I knew I wasn't. It's now 3pm and if been in ketosis for a few hours again. Feel great but had to wait. Will it always be like this. If anyone knows what I'm on about please reply. Thanks . Much love

This is incorrect from personal experience. I build muscle easily while overweight, 24-29 BMI. And I do so in a calorie deficit, training hard and lifting heavily. Losing the fat I find challenging. But it happens, albeit more slowly than I would like. You certainly can and should recompose rather than cut and lose muscle.

Why would an overweight person not begin weight training as part of their weight loss/deficit regimen? Even if they don't build as much muscle as optimal during a caloric deficit, but they will still build some, and that will help with the weight loss (body recomp approach).
