I'm a health sciences major and LOVE these videos of yours! Could you maybe do one comparing different "healthy" cooking oils, such as avocado oil, grapeseed oil, coconut oil, etc. just comparing benefits and stuff? I'm always confused which one is better to use haha
Haha yah and I've jumped on the bulletproof coffee train w brain octane, and the bottle says no Lauric acid so if that's what causes the oil to go straight to providing energy then how can bulletproof coffee be good? Ahhhhh so many questions!
There are several components to natural remedies . One plan I discovered that successfully combines these is the Covert Health Scheme (check it out on google) it's the most useful guide that I've heard of. look at all the incredible information .
What,I can, say, about coconut oil is that before my skin was,Full of skars and pimplles. I started to eat coconut oil I thought it will help my hair to grow faster and fuller. I got flawless skin like magic. I was really impressed. I think it will help later also with my hair.
Any chance you can do a skinny series on condiments, like barbecue sauce, ketchup, honey mustard, etc? If you have specific healthier options that you like that would be awesome!
Everyone should eat coconut oil. The problem are vegetable and canola (other highly processed oils). As long as you eat cold pressed (none expeller, non refined) oils your good to go (including REAL butter)
I found the article from Huffington Post, it was shared a lot on Facebook but was reaaallly hard to find on google. All that came up was a bunch of old articles about canada thinking of changing their food guide until I searched "huffington post" and it was still like the 3rd option. www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/progress-canadas-new-food-guide-will-favor-plant_us_5966eb4ce4b07b5e1d96ed5e
I love that you are sharing all of this info from an evidence-based standpoint!! As an RN I am always interested in what research is saying about the food we eat but hard to find the time to sift through all of the research myself. Thank you for being a trustworthy source to turn to!!
I really appreciate your content because I know that you have a college degree and all of your knowledge isn't based off bias documentaries, magazine articles and other RU-vidrs. Thanks for being balanced and genuine! I'm a dietetics major myself and I get so irritated from all of the bias, conflicting information. At least through my program, I'm taught legitimate, unbiased information.
You just summarized my advanced nutrition class chapter on fat metabolization lol! I wish this video was around earlier this spring😜 Really good video though!
Thank you so much for doing this video! I had seen the buzz about coconut oil recently and I was curious about it, and the way you explained it was so clear and you can clearly tell how well informed and knowledgeable you are, wish you could teach me all of my classes haha
Wise up people. Coconut is not freaking high in saturated fat if its organic!! Is is definitely a super food. It is in no way bad for you. You just have to be getting the right stuff. Just like any food
My OCD brain was like, "You forgot to light the candle!" 😂😝 I appreciate this video and the fact that you discuss EBP and even link the research. Thanks!
I love all of your videos like this! I just made a video about coconut oil too and found a lot of the same research, although I did see some sources claiming it was even lower in MCTs. My problem with Coconut Oil is that it's become so trendy and all of these "healthy" bloggers, etc. are claiming it to be a super food, that people are replacing healthy cooking oils like Olive Oil and other polyunsaturated fatty acids, with it. Just like butter or red meat, eating it obviously isn't going to kill you, but I DEFINITELY don't think people should be replacing oils that we know for sure are good for us.
Yes it's definitely gotten way more credit than it deserves! Lol And yeah when I was looking into it about up to 50% could be MCTs, but depending on quality it could definitely be lower
You can also mix coconut oil, baking soda, and lemon to make toothpaste which is an Excellent Teeth whitener as well. Coconut oil is life, and it's definitely a super food!!
Can you please do a video on which milk alternative is the best? Like almond, soy, cashew and if it's really as healthy as it says? Love you videos and love you 💕
Great info, could listen to you talk for hours, thanks so much!!! One thing I think ppl still misunderstand is that "good" vs "bad" is really a misnomer in nutrition. The idea of assigning moral values to our food choices is so outdated & needs to be eradicated from our thought processes...which you did a great job beginning that conversation & I would love to hear you talk more about that. Thanks!!!
This was super fascinating- thanks for making! Aside from health considerations, it's comedogenic- I used it on my face a few times and it gave me the worst breakouts -so I'm not coconut oils' biggest fan!
I've heard people say that it's good to put on your skin, but just feeling it in my hands makes me think, "NO WAY." Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't do that!
Love the song choice at the end!! Haha. Got that right. You know you're stuff! I feel like that should be in response to all those videos made in response to your why you're not vegan video (I didn't watch them because I knew they would just annoy me but saw them come up on related stuff back then). I appreciate you going through all of the research to make this video and your other videos. It makes my life easier because I don't have to go through all the information. I feel like I already do that enough with other topics haha. I saw a lot of people talking about a video on cooking oils and I've also been wanting that!! Would be so helpful :)
Hello Becca. My understanding is that the studies the AHA took into consideration did not do particle testing on LDL. Yes, there was a small rise in LDL but particle testing would have shown that the rise was in larger LDL particles which is not a health issue and not the smaller particles which are the ones that cause the problems. What's your thoughts on this?
Great video! Love that you have both sides. So often we just see ONE side and people get crazy. Haha. Great points you made about using it in moderation and not going crazy with it.
All my grandparents eat coconut oil since they were young and my grandad died at 92 my nan is now 85 and my other nan is 90 with pretty much perfect health dont know if it relates but yeah.
hi Hi ......How can coconut or MCT old be a true saturarated fat when they are liquid at body temperature? I thought only fats that were solid at room or body temp were saturate? If its liguid at body temp.....how does it stick to your arteries? I understand about animal fats since they stay solid at body temp.
This was insanely informative! I really appreciate you making this and sharing with us! Coconut oil is so popular nowadays, and it can be tempting to gravitate toward things like it without knowing what it's all about. It's great to hear some of the reality. Loved the video!
I'm SO glad to hear it Lisa!! And I totally agree..even as a dietitian I find myself sometimes getting swayed by things we are bombarded with in the media..it's crazy! But it's so important to always take a step back and look at what the actual science/research findings are saying :) Thanks so much for watching! xx
Could you do a video on ketosis and the recommended length to stay in a state of ketosis? I know that the keto diet plan has been gaining popularity recently and I don't know very much about it. Also, how is ketosis different than diabetic ketoacidosis? I love your videos, they are so informative and helpful!
Thanks for doing this video, Becca!! I've been very curious about this topic! I love coconut oil in my coffee, I'll still use it, but probably a little bit less! Also, thanks for giving us the cold, hard facts and letting us know that it's still pretty up in the air!!
Can u do a video on a bunch of different diets? Just your personal opinion on them. like keto, paleo, intermittent fasting, eating one meal a day? Thanks for another great video
Hi Becca so glad to see this video. Thank you found very helpful as I use coconut oil. Confused on the refined and unrefined. Which is better? And how about coconut manna? What are your thoughts on that? Because I eat the manna out of the jar everyday like 1 or 2 TBSP. Was under the understanding that it is good for you. Take care!
Unrefined or virgin is less processed and therefore will maintain it's integrity/antioxidant levels better. I'm not sure what other foods you consume on a daily basis..if that is your only source of saturated fat it's not the end of the world but I wouldn't necessarily just add the manna into your day (2 tbsp has about 16g saturated fat, which is a good amount) for the sole reason that it's 'good for you,' as the research is mixed on whether or not coconut fat is harmful or not. Hope this helps!
I saw another video about this report. I know so many ppl have gone coconut oil crazy. And I was trying to figure if I wanted to jump on the trend. So This info is super helpful! Thanks for sharing your knowledge as well as doing research. Do you personally use coconut oil in your cooking/baking? Do you eat whole fat foods like whole milk and whole milk yogurt?
So glad you found it helpful! As I mentioned I do use coconut oil here and there, and as far as dairy I switch that up too tho lately I've been leaning towards more full fat. Everything in moderation..and I am always aware of what foods I'm getting saturated fat from in a day so I know I'm balancing them out and not going overboard, if I'm going to have them. Hope that makes sense!
I love you videos Becca and always look forward to them. I was taking MCT oil (1 tablespoon) daily for a month and then had my lipid profile completed thru my internal medicine doctor. My lab work all came back significantly higher and have now stop taking the MCT oil. It did provide me with increased energy, but it was not a good fit for me from my lab work results. What are your thoughts on genetic testing or DNA testing for diet management? Can you do a video on the pro/cons? Do you know of a reliable lab provider? I am concerned with the validity of the test results.
I haven't done in depth research in MCT oil, but it is high in saturated fat, so I'm not surprised your lipid levels increased after consuming it daily. Why are you unsure about the validity of your tests? You went through your doctor, correct?
Sorry for the confusion. I am content with the lipid profile lab results. My doctor did not have much info on the genetic testing for diet management and this is the part that I have concerns with. I was wondering if you had any experience with genetic testing for diet management or if you think genetic testing is a valid tool to help guide you diet. Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions and have a great weekend!
Thanks for this! Starting to get annoyed with all the hype surrounding it. I actually use it in place of a night cream mainly because I like the smell:). Also works wonders on eczema and minor skin irritations. Never felt the need to eat it though...as I love my avocados to much and get enough fat from that.
I love listening to the science of everything that you explain! It helps it make sense instead of just the media articles I see. I love all your videos! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Aw I'm so glad to hear that! Things can get so twisted in the media, I'm happy that I can help provide some calm to the storm! Lol thanks for watching :)
I put a teaspoon of coconut oil in my coffee each morning...not for any kind of benefits...but because I love how creamy it makes it...would this be considered 'in moderation'?
Having 1 teaspoon a day would be 4g saturated fat, which isn't crazy, although it depends on the rest of your diet too..if you consume a lot of other foods that contain saturated fat (fatty meats, high/full-fat dairy, butter, etc) than you would want to be a little more conservative with one or the other. The average person, based on current recommendations, would want to shoot for ~15-22g saturated fat per day (based on 7-10% of total calories on a 2,000 calorie diet). That is just the average, of course, and your situation could very well be different - but I hope this helps to clear it up & put it into perspective for you!
If coconut oil is bad then I am dead 😂 I consume A LOT per day. With A LOT of other saturated fat sources. I never had so much energy and wellness. Low fat means hi Carbs. I’ve been there. Personally, no color for me. I would never recommend Mix Carbs and Fats under the same diet because of the “de novo lipogenesis”. In my personal experience LCHF diet wins the battle.
Oh I'm so glad you did a video on it. It's high in saturated fat but I heard the chemistry inside the coconut oil is different then other saturated fat.
I use coconut oil for basically everything EXCEPT consumption, haha! makeup remover, skin care, hair care, etc... at least we know it has SOME benefits somewhere!
Since coconut oil is an MCT and goes straight to the liver - wouldn't that be hard on the liver? Lead to fatty liver or making it very difficult to process?
SUCH a great explanation! I'm a soon to be RD and I feel as though you really condensed the information and really explained it in a simple way and also helped me with studying for my RD exam with your explanation of fat absorption.
Aw thank you Jillian! And thank you so much for watching!! Hope the studying is going well :) Will you be taking it soon?? Also I did a whole video on how I studied for the exam, may be helpful to check it out! xx
Yes! I take it in 3 weeks! and I know they'll fly by, it's been super hard because I just started my first job as well in June at a LTC facility. But I've watched your video about the exam over and over and over again! SUPER helpful and I took your advice on the worksheets and such and I had a two day study session with Jean Inman and I have all of her materials! So hopefully I'm on the right track! Thank you! I'd love to be doing your job as an RD!
Aw thank you Sharleen, that really means A LOT because it does take a lot of time & research to put these videos together :) So thank you!! And yes hope you love Hayley as much as I do! xx
wow this was so informational and eye opening thanks so much for making this I love your videos they're always so informative and realistic. thanks for doing what you do keep it up you gorgeous woman!
I have a question. If you swish coconut oil in your mouth for a cavity cure and then spitting it out. Would you be okay or!? Cause I have had cavities that fell out of my mouth and I searched up on how to not have the after cavities go into your gums. I just want to know if I'd be okay or if I would have to go to the doctor because I'm confused. And they say coconut water is better for you.
Been looking for something like this for the longest time! There has been tons of mixed reviews for coconut oil and I'm glad to come to a conclusion for now! I know you've mentioned oxidation in oils and I'm curious to know about that factor for coconut oil, is it okay to use it in temperatures for sautéing and baking?
hello, I really love your videos because I found them really useful, informative and healpful and kinda inspirational. Could you make a video about keto diet (I think that's the name)? Now I'm always seeing people talking about this diet and how's effective and how's good for you etc etc. Thank you!!!
Aw thanks Rachel!! Also random side note, hope you got a chance to check out my healthy on vacation video! I know you were asking if I had any tips :) :)
I just got my coconut oil and mine is just clear liquid? I realised it is cold pressed, but it is the same as normal coconut oil the one which isnt a pure liquid?
I haven't done in depth research on it, but it has similar amount of saturated fat content (as coconut oil) so I would be proceed with caution and use it sparingly if you're going to
Jenna Karsky personally, i find that it isn't necessary to use oils at all! I spritz with a little oil if I'm using spices to get them to stick, but otherwise I just sprinkle a little salt and put them on parchment paper!
I typically use extra virgin olive oil, although I don't roast over 400 degrees with it, because you don't want to go over it's smoke point (which is around 400). And also I always couple veggies with a fat source to make sure I'm able to absorb any fat soluble vitamins (ex Vit A & Vit K) they contain. Hope this helps!
It really depends on the method of cooking & what temperature you're using. Also, if you're cooking veggies it's always a good idea to couple it with some kind of fat source (doesn't necessarily have to be oil) so you can absorb any of the fat soluble vitamins they contain :)
Nice video!! Just wanted to add that LDL is not bad per se. it’s a carrier protein that carries cholesterol to our tissues like the brain. ‘Good’ LDL is fluffy & soft, and turns bad when oxidized mainly by glucose making it dense and hard. That’s what is really ‘bad’ LDL not that LDL itself is bad. And coconut oil besides from its antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti fungal properties, it can be easily converted to pregnenolone, an androgenic hormone precursor. I use coconut oil a lot and it’s amazing!! Checkout my videos when you have time, it’s health related as well. I’m new, let me know what you think! 😊 I also have a blog www.in-wholeness.com Thank You!!
I give my dog about a tablespoon of this every night. He licked it off me when I wore it so I thought it would be healthy for his skin and fur but maybe not
Yes it definitely has some antibacterial properties, I wasn't really focusing on all of the benefits of it in this video though, since I wanted to cover the fat composition/implications discussion in detail (since that is at the center of the most recent debate)
+Becca Bristow For sure, and I'm so glad you did!! I love the way you research and approach topics in an unbiased and openminded way. I can't eat coconut oil myself, but I'm thinking of buying a Monolaurin supplement for a specific health issue. Have you ever done a video on the benefits of short-chain fatty acids?
I thought of you and your channel last night when I was watching "What the Health" on Netflix. Have you seen it? If so, what are your thoughts on the information presented in it?
StickingHistory I stopped watching it because a lot of their claims have been disproven. While they had some good points, the overall documentary was very one sided and not very factual. And believe me, I LOVE a good healthy food documentary. I would suggest watching Fed Up for better information. :)
Haven't watched it..documentaries are typically always very one-sided and never give the viewer the whole story, which is why I prefer to look at the actual research instead of a show. Other RD friends that have watched it said they made some valid points but that a lot of it was just false and extreme. Seems to me like it's just creating more fear around food which is the not what this society needs haha
I highly recommend you read the book Eat Fat Get Thin by Dr. Mark Hyman. It has helped me understand fats so much better! It's a must read if you're in the nutrition world :) love your videos!!
