I disagree! People and life are complex. At least 1/3 of us are living with insecure attachment issues from our upbringing. We can be anxious or avoidant. So our calling a relationship off, may say more about the emotional conflicts with in the person who pulled away. Working through pullbacks is the preferred option. Similar skills will be required in solid relationships.

If someone dumps you and then tries to get back with you, you’re now in the “power position”, which means that if you think like that or anything like it, you can test them to see how much they really want to be back with you. You can do this by working out all the things you didn’t like when you were together previously and telling them that those things need to change, or won’t be accepted, if you’re to give them another chance. If they’re willing to make those changes then they’re serious about you. It alternatively gives the opportunity to work out what things you’d ideally like them to do that they didn’t do previously, that you’d really like them to do for you this time around. Again, if they’re reasonable requests and they’re willing to do these things, they’re serious about wanting to be with you. Just immediately rejecting their request means you miss this golden opportunity to take advantage of being in the “power position”.

I really needed this today. My ex just texted me saying that she's "been thinking about me a lot" and "wondering if I still think about her", 5 months after she told me she didn't want me in her life anymore. What's worse is that her daughter and I got really close and it hurts thinking about how hard the breakup must have been on that little girl. I was fully invested in our relationship before she broke up with me. It's not my job to fix what she broke. And I'm sure as hell not getting back together with someone who doesn't know what she wants. Neither me, nor her daughter deserve to get hurt any further from her actions

Hi Sam! Your only option is to let him go - he will either realize you aren't going to wait forever for him to decide and he needs to up his game or he will move on as well. And if he does move on meanwhile you've already made room for someone new and more loving in your life. Don't hold on to what might be, let go and find what really is. Or something like that. Either way if you let go, you win. :) You don't have to cut him out completely, just mirror his effort towards you. No one should be able to rent the first place suite in your heart for free. I've been in your shoes before. I learned to never let myself be an option for someone. I chased my ex for the longest time but I finally gave up and realized that he is who he is and he can't be changed. Letting him go was one of the hardest things I had to do because I loved him more than he loved me but for the sake of my own sanity, it was for the best. Let him be someone else's problem. If a man is absolutely sure about you, he'll make sure that you know it.

Every time I start thinking about what I could have done differently to make her happy, make her stay with me, I keep coming back to "Well, yeah, but she could have also talked to me about that." When she broke up with me, she had no filter on the things I'd done and hadn't done in the last few months that had upset her. Where was this when we were dating? Simple problems that could have been fixed by sitting down for 5 - 10 minutes and just talking them out. It's coming up on 2 months since she broke up with me, and she hasn't said a word - no texts, no messages. If that's really how unimportant I was to her, to just break up over problems that could have been worked out without even TRYING to work them out, what the hell do I want a relationship like that for? If you want someone in your life who gets mad at you and won't communicate with you about why they're mad, get a cat.

I feel like i cant relate to this but can at the same time. I broke up with her because i didnt want to make her unhappy with how severe my depression was. I made some poor decisions and misjudged alot of things in the relationship. Ive gotten much better mentally and much healthier since then, ive improved so much. Same man. I'll tell a bit about my story because I think it might help someone feel less alone in their battle. So, I was in a bad place when we were together. After the break up I got therapy, help from friends and parents... Letting him go was not easy though. I didn't dump him because I wanted power or anything like that... The relationship was just making me cry every night, and he was somehow neglecting me and at some point he became too distant. After parting my way from his, I Watched videos on the internet, and read about people's experiences, and worked on my self-growth and health. It hurts to not have him in my life because I miss the connection that we had, but I know that it became so toxic at the end, and what I want is the opposite: Peace. I still think about him, but will I text him? No, I can't. Because I knew I would miss him. So, I deleted his number from my phone some time later the break up... We have a mutual friend, but will I go to him and ask about if my ex is OK? No, because what good will it do... No good. My ex told me himself that he wouldn't change his mind. So, why would I waste my life over trying to convince someone? That is not reasonable. If it was meant to be, my ex could would not be my ex and still my boyfriend. But, he is not. For you though, dear og commentator things are a bit different. I hope that whatever decision you make, you think before acting, and reach happiness in any circumstance. Whoever read so far, thank you for taking the time to heal, and remember that, by not making the same mistake, you are opening doors for new opportunities, and not chasing people with whom you can't see a future with Will help you see the people out there. @@abalp6839 Firstly, I'm just a dude on the internet, so take what me or anyone's tells you with a grain of salt in regards to any one of your relationships. I highly recommend talking to a relationship counselor or therapist as they are more qualified than anyone (including Matthew btw) to help you. Besides, there's likely other things that may be affecting you and, in turn, your relationships; which a mental health specialist can help identify and resolve. Granted, if you want my take. There can be a variety of factors which contributed to your someone ending the relationship. That said, it's most likely one of two reasons: it's solely because of your job or your job one of many reasons, but your job change was the last straw. Regardless, unless either of you is willing to comprise or concede, then it is most likely not going to work. Talk to a mental health specialist tho.

I honestly think it depends on the reason why the two broke up in the first place . No relationship is perfect, & sometimes there isn’t something major that caused the relationship to end .. it’s simply right person wrong time. This isn’t always the case , but sometimes it is.

Thought this was the case, right person wrong time. Turns out I just got treated worse each time he wanted to get back together. Using me to validate himself then go about his life, had me full of anxiety and so confused each time. Bringing me to his parents then barely talking to me. Wish I didn’t try again with him, he probably thinks he can get back to me whenever he wants now but I’m taking my L and moving on

It’s so true but at the same time, during the process of getting to know someone, it can’t be expected that each person is gonna feel the same way at the same time. Feelings and emotions may progress at different times, just because one person likes you a lot, they can’t expect that you feel exactly the same at the start, and that doesn’t mean that they aren’t sure about you. During time spent together to know them and develop feelings, they then pull away from being scared of getting hurt and now your the hurt one with feelings.

Hmm but sometimes people break up with someone because their actually insecure 😞 I’m not saying it’s right to do that and if you’re feeling insecure about your relationship, maybe that in itself is telling you something about how the other person is making you feel but all I’m saying is, sometimes there are other reasons why inapt decisions are made. Not everyone is making decisions to leave just because they don’t want to be with you.

I said I had enjoyed meeting him again and I still liked him, and forgave him, but if he returned to any of the old habits or made me feel like second choice or a plan B at any point I would just walk away. And he didn’t actually, he was much better. But it didn’t work out because of distance.

I don't have much of a problem getting back together with someone I broke up with. Sometimes it may have been a matter of fights and personality incompatibilities. But time passes and you find a way to deal with this incompatibility, we all mature. But not only do I agree that the sexiest thing in the world is someone who is sure of you, but I believe that without that it's impossible for me to relate. It's even kind of annoying, since I lose confidence quickly when I realize that the other is not that into me. But I separate liking someone, with being able to stay by her side, some people are difficult to deal with.

I've had one former girlfriend I've ever wanted to get back together with. Within a few weeks, she dated someone else and was married within 5 months. If you're that desperate to get married, and she was, I have NO interest. She married a guy barely divorced, and he divorced her because she was in a car accident and became a vegetable. He didn't want to be married to that, so divorced her and married the first girl who batted her eyelashes at him. Only in the rarest of circumstances should anyone get back with someone they dated seriously.

Confidence in yourself is key. The other thing anyone can do is just block delete and stay silent. It would be easy to argue. But to let that fire they assume have to die down into reality is justifiable enough to be your final say. What good would saying shut up or we're through do? Nothing but letting them know that they can talk to you. What good would allowing it for you? Nothing because it only takes from your peace of mind. So in these types of situations "breathe. Stay silent, let them live and let you live without them is the best type of revenge or peace anyone can give them selves... Nothing is written where you have to speak and feed the fires. And we all know flames die without oxygen. So... Keep your flame burning and let the ex live in the decision they chose. That is what true confidence and acceptance in those situations reflects. Even if it hurts. You are a phoenix. So rise from the ashes say nothing and keep moving forward. You got this.

Hiii Methew, I am in a marriage where there is no romance, and the guy validates it by saying that this is not me, all the people around me convince me that reach out to him and make him love you, you tell me how should I do, coz this makes me somehow compromise my own self and not taking myself as a respectfully existing being. I am currently thinking this through. I broke up with my ex-gf, but it was due to anxiety stemming from rape and abandonment issues that I hadn't worked through. I've since gone to therapy and done a lot of reflecting, and realized just how much getting serious with a girl was bringing up all this emotional baggage. She's a great person, and I only reached out to her once to tell her I was sorry for ending things, hurting her, and I was in therapy. She was supportive and appreciative. It's been about 7 months now, and I'm wondering if I should reach back out to her. I would kind of like to at least talk to her about what I was feeling even if she doesn't want to reunite.

It's actually quite common and usually stems from childhood. People take people back and put up with all kinds of behaviour because they are convinced through their upbringing that this is either normal or what they deserve. I've heard many many stories about people that stayed in shitty and/or abusive relationships and have had a series of these in their lifetime. We have to retrain ourselves to completely understand that this is unacceptable and that we do deserve better. For some people, sex is what keeps them and even though their partner is unfaithful, they stay until either they themselves can find a new person to have sex with or wait until that other person leaves. Yes, you will be more attractive to people if you're confident in knowing what you want and being bold and direct when it matters most.

As tough as it might be to face the facts, you do deserve better if someone is going to treat you that way but you have to be the one to tell yourself that. Honestly, if a 'soul tie' is keeping you in a relationship where somebody doesn't care about you then it doesn't mean anything at all. Find people in your life that do care about you and find them doing what you love.

It isnt so cut and dry what matters first is how you feel, how strong it is and why they were an ex. After if they cant be honest about what they wanted, what they had to do while away be friends or cut them out it is up to you. Things used to be like that but there is always one more thing to consider, it doesnt mean you have to hang on it just means there is still something you're looking for with them. That is nothing to be ashamed of just keep yourself first if you found they do deserve another chance.
