Should you Scotchgard new furniture? After doing a test area on our new couch we were worried Scotchgard Fabric Shield might be too toxic. Then we tested how well protected the fabric we sprayed was. Scotchgard really does a great job as a fabric protector. We were at odds over what do. So, I did a little research on Scotchgard.
We ultimately decided it was worth it, because the water did roll right off. However, we did do our research and also learned from the mistakes we made with the testing area. Here is the full Scotchgard process for our new couch and some tips I definitely recommend so you don't stink your house up with fumes!

The question is what goes in Scotchguard to make it water repellent. Suspecting PFAs and othe chemicals that go in your pjs, skin, kids etc

Aww, thank you! That really means a lot. I always want to share what I can and make sure it's genuine and how I would want someone to talk with me if we were just having a conversation. Best of luck with the convincing!! It's definitely worth it. We eat on the couch for the most part (still no dining room table yet lol) and have spilled so much on it already and it has saved us big time!! No stains. Well probably do it again in another couple months at least on our spots we sit when we eat.

Yes!! So good for houses with littles. My husband spilt something on the couch the other night and rolled right off and we wiped it away no problem.

Definitely recommend doing it outside if you can! We can not smell it on our couch at all anymore. It only took a day or so for it to be completely gone once we did it outside. When we tried inside it lingered all week.

Thanks .. you´re nice .. I just protected my new sofa with the product .. I guess will help with spills but also with dirt! ... maybe just passing a humid cloth once in a while and .. put scotchgard again in a year! Greetings from Mexico City

My lounge was done by company pre delivery, not since. I have tiles with rugs, and we have an old dog that goes outside and occasionally leaks when comes back inside I have shampooed the rug , this time 4 coats. It seems to work but a big plus is I don't think the dog likes the smell. He now leaks on the tiles. The smells, I bought a small cabinet for the kid and by the time I finished assembly I was extremely sick and dizzy. We let it ventilate a couple of weeks, then let kid have it. I should have taken back.

We just got a new couch last week and I’ve been debating this. We have a 2 year old and 6 month old with an off-white couch! 🙈 Did you leave your couch outside for the 3-4 days or did you bring it in after you sprayed it?

I highly, HIGHLY recommend it! We have no kiddos, but my nieces and nephews are over a lot. But we spill just as much as them- haha. We brought it in at the end of the day. Sprayed it in the morning and then left it out until evening, but didn't leave it overnight.

Hey great videos! Would really like to try this out though! I have a question, sounds silly but have you observed that there's a difference in texture of the fabric after scotchguarding ?

Hi, thanks! no, there was no difference in our texture. I am not sure about other fabrics, but it felt the same for us. Overtime the fabric will soften just with use like any new couch. That was the case for us too. We plan to scotchgaurd again in another few months just in the places we utilize the most often as the protectant has started to wear away some, but all good everywhere and hasn't effected the quality or texture of the fabric.

Thanks for the review, and also for the testing of it! Smart idea to take it outside! I was going to suggest sending the kids to the Grandparents for the weekend if someone with kids did it, and opening all windows for ventilation. But your idea was smarter lol. How about the texture/touch of the fabric? Will scotchgard made it less soft?

Not on our couch. It felt the same after. I don't know about other fabrics, but I don't think it's supposed to change the feel.

We got them at a local spot here in Florida, called Haynes Brothers. There are three along the coast. I called the store though to ask for the make and model. It's an England Malibu (www.englandfurniture.com/england-malibu-sectional/2400-sect-401/iteminformation.aspx). This particular color was getting discontinued, but there is one very close to it. There might still be some left. We took the instore floor model, but I remember him saying there was one left in that color in another store. The couch was super reasonable in comparison to other ones we had been looking at!

They have taken scotch guard off of the market recently, the chemical is toxic and can cause hormonal imbalances. I would recommend washing and finding an alternative brand.

It had been discontinued and removed from the market for a while. This is the newer one as far as I am aware. I will look into that though. Thank you!

My 26 year old daughter is disabled in a staffed home because I sprayed Scotguard in a furniture warehouse 27-30 years ago. Same birthdefects as the labrats, Dupont has since removed the chemical

I am so sorry to hear that! I wish there had been more care to never have made things with those products in the first place. I know they have reformulated, but I am sorry you had to be exposed to the chemical in the first place.

Hi, so far it is still holding up and things wipe away pretty easily. Not as easily as when we first did it 6 months ago, but still wiping away ok without leaving any marks.

So, yeah, you took it outside...but really you should invest in some genuine protection against inhaling that and lots of other chemicals!!! Buy a decent vapor mask with replaceable cartridges, like the low end 3M line. Use it for this and furniture finishing, spraying insecticides, even spray paint. Seriously. Really.

I think this causes cancer...... Scott's guard is very dangerous and now it's on their furniture.... I don't know do you throw the couch out now or wash it really well to remove it ....

@@melaniefostersnavely good to know we have a new RH piece we want to protect but this scotchguard we read it has an ingredient that is carcinogenic long term so debating. We tried a couple non toxic silicon spray but it so far doesn’t seem 100% effective. Do the they still have PFAS on the bottle ingredient?

They've removed the ingredient that made it super toxic and rebranded with a different formula. It's still made with chemical elements but none that have had to be pulled for the reasons the old scotchgard was pulled for. It was completely removed from the market until it was made safe enough to use again.

Hard not to think that may have contributed, but from what the doctors have said this cancer was probably there dormant for a few years, so I doubt the one spray did it but needless to say we won’t be doing it again.

@@melaniefostersnavely Ok. Sorry. I'm just really upset that you have to deal with this. I'm an avid reader too, and I love your bookshelf. Have you been able to read any of your books? Sorry I " was diagnosing" things. It's just these chemical companies have created an epidemic of cancer and there never seems to be accountability on their part. It's impossible to prove, however, it is on video, and I still think you have a case. I'm just saying, you're so sweet , and they are so cruel .
