so glad that Nitrome is still around! their absurdly creative flash games and website showed a great talent for not just making games with really satisfying core loops but also with a ton of personality in character designs and sound/visual effects. it's really a shame that Flash died because it unfortunately took a lot of their games with it

Their website is even still up and lets you use Supernova Player to keep playing the games on their site! Also, nowadays they're a publisher, but they still make their indie games with that Nitrome charm, like Bomb Chicken and Gunbrick: Reloaded

They're slowly porting all their old titles to HTML5!

The music reminds me of the Shinobi 3 soundtrack- definitely a good thing.

One of the best Genesis soundtracks of all time for sure!

I love the chunky, colourful Megadrive esque graphics! Much more appealing to me than the 8 bit NES stylings of the original Shovel Knight. I'll give it a pass though - i get Celeste PTSD from watching this gameplay haha! Sooo stressful beating that game! Great review KC!

You could go bare in sequent runs or go to the accesablity option tab and make things significantly easier to better understand the game and area mechanics till you revert the changes

I've sunk like 10 hours into this. I really love the Grub Pit ost. It's sad how powerful some of the relics are v.s the bosses, the lance or horn just rips through thier health/phases.

Been playing it on Apple Arcade and it runs well and plays well buuuuut… the touch controls may betray you (aka you may slip up) when the on screen threats go high level. Still recommend it but you may want a controller to sync, for that extra response. 👍

Looks like the game bumped up a generation of console from 8 bits to 16 bits, which means my eyes and especially ears don't bleed anymore, yay ! I hope the next one won't have early playstation era 3D graphics ^^

Just a heads up, if you aren’t aware. It’s not the same type of game. Just the IP developed in this dig type game. I’ve played both and have enjoyed them thoroughly, for what it’s worth.

Nice. Every game needs a roguelike DLC

Ugh, yet another rogue-lite that follows the shitty Spelunky model of "we can't design level generation well enough, so we're just gonna spawn an unkillable insta-kill-on-touch giant hazard to force you to move forward"... Pass.
@calamariboss8532
@calamariboss8532 2 года назад
Unlike the mess of randomness in spelunky, the level generation in shovel knight dig is great. It’s series of pre-made chunks that are blended together seamlessly, and the variety of chunks means there’s never too much repetition between runs. The saw is important for maintaining the pace of the game. It’s mean to be a quick scramble downwards, and without the saw players would be forced to make quick decisions less often, ruining the pace of the game
@NekoiNemo
@NekoiNemo 2 года назад
@@calamariboss8532 But it's the exact same with Spelunky - they couldn't design game well enough (to either naturally incentivise player to move forward, or account for the fact that some people may choose to play carefully and/or explore), so they inserted an awkward crutch in a form of insta-kill thing chasing you. This game did the same thing
@DanteMayCry-qv5kf
@DanteMayCry-qv5kf Год назад
@NekliNemo why are you giving spelunky and other randomly generated games flack? Just because it is randomly generated and a roguelike doesn't mean that the devs can't make a good level. The randomness is used strategically for roguelike games so people would never get bored of dying in the same level. It's your fault for wanted to play carefully and explore in a ROGUELIKE. The whole point of the genre is to do multiple runs, adapt to equipment you get each time, and complete theme efficiently while getting more skilled each run. If it were a linear game like the last of us or god of war you would want to explore because it is one journey with a set level for each section. Complaining that roguelike/lites don't have hand made levels is a stupid thing to do.
@NekoiNemo
@NekoiNemo Год назад
@@DanteMayCry-qv5kf 1) It's not a roguelike but a rogue-LITE. 2) In a rogue-LIKE, btw, the slow, methodical and thorough exploration is THE way you play those games, as rushing in will get you killed. 3) If it was a linear game with a present map - why would i ever want to explore even once, let alone do it again every time? 4) Since you apparently need a "reading comprehension for adults" classes i'm compelled to point out that never once did i complain about the procedural levels, which is the thing you seem to cling to, and instead my complaint was the ONE thing you (conspicuously) avoided while seemingly clinging to every other word i have said: "insta-kill chasing you". The kind of design decision a lazy game developer would use as a crutch when they want to force player to constantly rush forwards, but aren't skilled enough to come up with an ergonomic and fitting way to accomplish the same (which, ironically, rogue-LIKEs do accomplish with an aforementioned ergonomic and elegant method)
