Every time I have enough money left over in my bank account to THEORETICALLY buy new gear, I get this terrible itch. Currently, the thought of getting a Lumix G9 is costing me actual sleep. I don't really need it, I'm a beginner hobbyist. Why would I need a second camera? But I can't shake this feeling. It's either a lens or a new camera. Gear Acquisition Syndrome is real. Did I mention I barely ever leave the house to actually use the camera I have (a Nikon Z5)? I always find excuses, and no excuse is too low for me. I'm constantly reminding myself of that old bit by comedian Marc Maron about needing "magic running shoes" that will automatically make him leave the house and exercise, without him having to do anything.

To get started in incorporating photography in my life, I started simply bringing my camera with me. Everywhere. It started out as just having it in my bag, that way when i did have those moments of "oh i wish i brought it with me" they could actually be captured. Slowly I started getting accustomed to take more photos, and now I just normally bring my camera with me when I go out. Not always an option for some, ofcourse, but definitely benefited me greatly!

My favorite analogy is that of playing a musical instrument. Lots of people may "know how" to play guitar for example. But, most aren't great. You get great by practicing. You get to know the instrument, scales, all the technical stuff so well that you don't have to think about them any more. You use your ear. You just play because you're fluent. That's when you can become more creative in your playing, especially with improvisation. Finally, you have to remember to have fun!! Great video. How long did it take to get to the top of all the steps you came down? LOL!

I think James would tell you to shoot the flat light anyway, lots of things can look really great in flat light 😊

Consistency and discipline are the two hardest things that I need to learn this year to be able to achieve my goals in photography and also in life, haha. Thanks for sharing Roman, always motivating us. I'll be looking forward to the amazing photos you'll take in Korea and Japan ♥

Spot on, and we have no excuse for not taking photographs everyday considering we are all walking around with a smartphone in our pocket.

Interesting point about something becoming part of your identity, putting in the effort is easier that if it's something you do for other reasons.

Some said - to reach a perfection on anything, you should practice 10.000 hours..... I can just agree - as more time I'm dedicating to my hobby, as more professional I become. I can not agree about "photography muscle training".... In my mind, photography is not so simple - it is art, when muscle training - just physiology (Believe me - I know the difference - formerly I was a almost professional athlete). As any art, photography requires some kind of inspiration. There is no satisfaction in "just shooting anything" but it is fact - as more time is dedicated to photography, as more often that inspiration comes. Thanks for Your video - subject of thinking, as always!

In other words, your photography has to become part of your lifestyle. It's like when people come to me looking for advice on how to become a better/faster runner. I usually tell them to make running part of their lifestyle and not just training for an event. Most don't get it ... I must admit, I've never thought of photography that way. Thanks for the kick ;-)

The idea of the eye as a muscle is one I thought of years ago, but not until I left professional photography and the muscle started to atrophy. Like with exercise, being a good photographer is not a thing that you achieve and then will always have; it takes continued work to maintain.

Hey Roman, loving your vids, probably my fave photography channel on here. Especially the on location stuff. Just wondering does your xt-5 make an odd click noise when turning on / switching between the camera and playback mode? Mine is and I’d expect it to I guess but I just never noticed it before…so not sure if it’s new or if I should be concerned. Also when’s the 2nd part of the Faizal vid coming out? Cheers 👍🏻

Just worked out it’s the lens - 😳 XF35 f2 Without it there’s zero click noise. Assuming I’m just worrying about nothing and it’s an obvious newbie question ? But any advice would be extremely welcome
