Creating very realistic looking pencil drawings usually involves using a reference photograph. Here are two reasons you may be having difficulty getting your drawings to look as realistic as you would like.
This has nothing to do with your current ability to draw. Understanding this concept and implementing it will result in much more realistic looking drawings regardless of your current ability.
In my Drawing Forum, pencil artists submit their drawings for me to critique. I also ask that they submit the reference photo they are working from. Quite often they are using a photo that has multiple light sources or that has been taken with an on camera flash. Doing this removes all of the necessary elements of light that tell the viewer it is a three dimensional subject.
So, choosing or taking a photo that contains highlight, halftones, reflected light, core shadow, and cast shadows allows the artist to visually tell the viewer that a three dimensional subject is being represented.
