Great Video man! Been wanting to hunt out of a saddle for a few years now but I am torn on which route to go and what to use exactly. Wish I had known about saddles a few years ago before I bought the other stands, my current setup is between 20-30 lbs depending and sometimes is very hard to get through the brush. I really wish I knew about these a few years ago so I didn't spend money I didn't need to on other stands. Thanks for sharing!

Love the video. Very informative. Do you ever fear your lineman's belt blakes hitch knot or ropeman 1 giving way as your leaning back while climbing the tree? I'm new to saddle hunting and this part makes me nervous. Adding a tether while you go up as a second back up would be difficult while placing sticks.

Your videos are awesome and well executed. I watch this one specifically because they climb up is the most important part along with knowing the ropes, placement of ropes and the step by step process of getting it down in the dark. I think the saddle is very comfortable. Bow hunting is very difficult in South Carolina because my deer have high pressure and leaves are on the trees more than half the season; this saddle is a great technique to outsmart the animal. Anyways, I have the U-slide mini bow hanger just like you suggested, and just as an FYI, it doesn't screw into the tree... Maybe it was just me, but I had to rig my U-slide function to a RealTree EZ hanger function because those actually go into the tree. And to start another discussion, what is everyones thoughts about those Muddy climbing sticks?
@terry2346
@terry2346 5 лет назад
Most public lands do not allow screwing anything into the tree. Or cutting off any branches for that matter. Not to say that people don't but you don't want to get caught doing it! :)

That was very smooth and well executed. I think it takes me 6.5 minutes to strap my climber onto the tree with the cables set correctly. I have a kestrel on order, mainly due to your videos. If you were starting out new, what would you use for a platform? Ameristeps, silent ascents, or the xop platform? Keep up the videos I really learn a lot from them!

Ameristeps if you can find them and afford them, if not pick up some of the Silent Approach. I am not a platform guy, I don't like them or see any advantage to them.

Boudreaux, I appreciate the videos and have been breaking my Kestrel in all season experimenting with different climbing methods and platforms. I have spurs and work great but want to purchase sticks for my out of state hunts- was looking at LW/XOP but I like the rope cam on the muddys and how fast they go up. It states 12.5 feet for four sticks and it looks like you get it a little higher but what would you say your max height in the saddle is with 4 of the muddys? Also, I had the Predator Platform and liked it but had some issues requiring me to send it back, so I went to the silent approach steps to use as a ring of steps after your review of them- have you had any issues with slipping on them when your boots are muddy or during less than perfect conditions? I hunt in the swamps of Georgia and my boots usually stay pretty muddy. Keep the videos coming your making a difference out there.
@BoudreauxBoswell
@BoudreauxBoswell 5 лет назад
I can get between 18-21ft with 4 muddy stick. They keys factors is the distance from the ground to first step, efficient stick spacing and distance from last step to your ring of steps. Learn your system and learn how to maximize your system. Bullman Steps were not designed to be a ring of steps as a platform, they can work in a pinch, but far from the best. The tapered shape of them added with muddy or wet boots will cause your foot to slide out the step. I have never had my foot slide completely off the step, but they will slide.

Great video. I’m switching to saddle hunting but struggling on making a decision about climbing methods. Roughly how high are you able to get with your four muddy pro climbing sticks?
@BoudreauxBoswell
@BoudreauxBoswell 5 лет назад
18-21 feet. It depends on step spacing and how high above your last stick you place your ring of step/platform. I have long legs so I can stretch it our a fair amount.
@Bham67

Great video. Thanks for the demonstration. I purchased and just received the Doyle's Huntin' Hoist. How did you clip it on your Kestrel? The webbing loops on my Kestrel are way too tight for the clip to fit through. Other things I didn't think of when ordering....it is much larger & heavier than I expected and is made of hard plastic for steps and such to bang against and make noise. Thinking about returning it before even using it. Any thoughts/suggestions?
@BoudreauxBoswell
@BoudreauxBoswell 5 лет назад
You have to remove the clip off the doyles and grind/trim it down so that it will fit the molle loops. As for the noise, I have never had any issues, if you are concerned about it you could use some Stealth Strips or Mole skin to cove the plastic. It is big and bulky, but to me it is well worth the trade off.
@Bham67
@Bham67 5 лет назад
I was able to actually field test it this afternoon. I bypassed the molle loops and just clipped it directly on the back of the Kestrel which was very secure and stable. I had thought the clip would feel uncomfortable against my back, but it wasn't even noticeable. After testing it I agree that it is quite handy having no slack and having the pull rope already stored away by the time the bow is up. Thanks again for the suggestion.

I've hung from trees on all day sits like this, switch from leaning to sitting positions every once in a while just like a hang-on. long guns get a huge advantage from this set up, shouldering it is a non-issue as it is just as natural as on the ground, but you now also have the tree or your tether to steady your shot.

That took a lot longer than six minutes and 30 seconds. Because you cut all those branches. So I would bet you either got the longest pole saw on the market, or you climbed up there once and cut those down, just so you could film this little bit. Now would be more realistic. If you had a little handsaw. And you cut those branches off as you went up to show the actual time it takes.

If I would have left the limbs on, then people would have complained that they could not have seen through them. Climbing a tree with limbs using sticks, there is no need to cut the limb off. The only time I would cut a limb is if it is above my ring of steps in a place that will cause issue.
