Fun fact: Singaporean field rations intentionally cause constipation to whoever is eating it. This is to prevent any urges for number twos during missions. Personally, i was constipated for 6 days during my outfield, you could only imagine my happiness when a proper toilet finally laid before my eyes back on company lines :)

As a Singaporean guy who's been to the army, I took a deep breath immediately when I saw Ollie applying camo cream on his face because I know that's not coming off without at least 3 rounds of washing, and if you really apply it properly usually when you wash it off you'd have a lining around your eyes that ironically look like eye liner. The rations will taste at least a good 70% better when heated btw. And there are a variety of different menu (12 or 16 when I was in service) and some of the menu were significantly worse! I would guess they didn't send you the horrid ones. It also seems that the ration pack you received was missing the additional snack packet which includes the beverages(or powdered form of those), biscuits and crackers, as well as the Maggi Mee packet(which is easily the best thing to eat outfield, either dry a la ppusho ppusho(뿌셔뿌셔), or cooked as soup noodles).

I feel there is a cultural difference here that needs to be addressed. In the West, dessert is often seen as a cake, pudding or pie, and could be ice cream. For the Chinese, something to round off a meal could be a Chinese style cake (not necessarily a baked cake/gateau in the Western sense) or a sweet drink, be it hot or cold. In Chinese, this is called 甜品 which translates roughly into Sweet Stuff/Something Sweet. The closest English equivalent to this concept is "dessert" but it does not quite fit. Despite the name 甜品 - Sweet Stuff - this post meal item could be sweet-savoury, not just purely sweet. Neither must it be solid, fruits or something served in a light syrup also qualifies as the post meal "Sweet Stuff", as does a hot congee textured sweet(ish) drink cooked with (mung) beans as the primary ingredient This cultural gap probably explains why the mung bean "dessert" makes perfect sense to the Chinese but Josh and Olly (and no doubt, many Westerners) find quite revolting as the mung bean "dessert" was neither pie nor pudding nor cake. I hope this helps.

It does help that our desserts are starchy liquids in our army.. we operate in dense jungles and the tropical heat is really something else with all our equipment on board. Having something easy to eat(drink) which fills you up and also giving us that needed sugar in our bodies is really useful. I usually ditch the main meals and go for the desserts first. 😄

Singapore national day is on 9th Aug. If under normal year, it is like the entire island celebrating it. It has fireworks 🎆, military vehicles like tanks, helicopters, armored carriers, parachutes, parades of every race marching and dancing, lots of lovely national theme singing, fireworks. But for the past 2 years, it has been subdued and the celebrations continued on. Even this year, from july till n-day, there were lots of practices, like F16 or F15 flyby, parachutes, huge singapore flag flown thru with Chinook helicopter, apache seen around the singapore marina bay.

As a Singaporean male who's had his share of combat rations, I can attest that almost no one likes the combat ration mains. A 24 hour worth of combat ration consists of 2 mains, 1 dessert and an assorted pack. The assorted pack includes instant coffee, instant tea, instant Milo, instant electrolyte drinks, tissues, solid fuel, matches, some candy, 1 pack of instant noodle and most importantly 4 packets of hard tack biscuits. I would've gladly survived days eating 1 pack of hardtack biscuit per meal and not touch any of the mains. The instant noodles were easily anyone's favorite, provided if we were allowed to cook but my ex unit never ever allowed cooking so we used to just eat the noodles raw. There were also some "tricks" we did on some of the assorted pack stuff to spice things up a little. Adding water to the hardtack biscuits made them spongy "cakes". If we added instant lemon tea drinks to them, they became "lemon cakes" etc etc.

Oooh wasn’t expecting the camo to come out of a tube like that. When I was serving in the Singapore army, the camo sticks are roll-on types, and sometimes lightly heated on the tip with lighter, so that it will stick to the face easily. These new ones with pasty tubes should be easier. Either ways, like what Ollie experienced, it will take awhile to come off. Cuz, you expect the camo to be part of your life while outfield. Then we will just look at the general foliage we are in to decide on either watermelon stripes or map of the world patterns. Haha. Memories.

Clarification for the green bean dessert - It’s known as a food with ‘cooling properties’ and the fibre really helps with filling up the tummy and digestion. You can easily find fresh green bean soup at bigger food courts here. And despite it being an MRE… that’s one thing people do not eat cold…

the camo paint is technically edible…our sergeants liked to tell us to eat the tubes for snacks. I never tried that coffee trick myself, but let me just say that the green pack rations were decent enough cold (just had them a couple months ago) and better warm. We were always told stories about how bad it was, and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t that bad.

Green bean soup is a very common (and old school) dessert here in SG! Almost every mum knows how to cook it for the family and we have it hot or cold, sometimes with a little coconut milk in it. You need to try the freshly cooked ones!

"These are Javanese noodles" "who's knees?" I just instantly laughing 🤣🤣 I'm an Indonesian and from Yogyakarta, central Java, where you can find javanese noddles easily. What you had in the Singaporean army ration is mi goreng jawa (as far as i can see), it should be sweet and slightly salty, can't describe the taste in words actually. Not sure about what you guys had taste like. Hope you can come to Yogyakarta and taste it by yourself. And if you had a change to visit, don't forget about bakmi godhog (javanese boiled noodle)

I served army in Singapore and sometimes the wildlife (wild boars, stray dogs) wouldn't even eat our MREs. We are usually given packages full of different flavors to choose from before we move out to the field. What I will do is swap out the main dishes for all the deserts and survive on them throughout my time in the field
@kaiwei1111

When you see the words "bean" and "stew" on any of the ration packs, the consensus is to go for the biscuits in the dessert pack instead. The pastas are top tier and anything bean related is "would rather starve" tier

To all who serve(d), all I can say is, thank you for sacrificing your taste buds (and appetites) for the nation... To Josh and Ollie: green (mung) bean soup is much nicer when freshly prepared! One thing I learnt when I was serving the mandatory 2 years in the Singapore Army, The longer or the more adjectives they add to the name of the MRE, the worst the ration is. Usually the CAMO will come off by itself during trainings. If have access to the washroom, A tip to removing the CAMO is to use soap/ shampoo quite a bit of it to rub it off.

Love your Videos, very glad to see some Singapore content here,very accurate on how we consume those. i used to eat these MREs from 2016-2018 back when i was in the army, i would normally skipped all the pasta and spicy ones and go for the more mild rice dumpling menu to minimize going No.2 in the jungle, those desserts are great alternatives when your running out of water. i would normally eat half a packet for each meal. and i see BQ was really nice to send you our Jungle hat and Camo Cream as well.

Cold cream is really great for removing camouflage. Also, alternative way of heating MREs - Place them near parts of the body with large arteries going through them - under your arms and near your groin. After awhile, they get kind of warm (not really hot) but you don't have to mess with the heating packs and such.
