Lots of people from black and Asian communities use skin whitening creams, but did you know that some of the products available on the high street are actually illegal?
Some of the creams contain dangerous chemicals that could result in an increased risk of skin cancer.
BBC Stories investigates what’s actually in these illegal creams, what damage can they do and why its so easy to get your hands on these illegal products. “If you’re worried the cream you’re using may contain illegal chemicals, you can have a look at Southwark Council’s banned product list or contact your local citizen’s advice bureau.”
The link to Southwark council list is on this site below. If you scroll down to banned products and click on the PDF called “illegal skin lightening products”
(www.southwark.gov.uk/business...)

@MizzGabrielle1987
@MizzGabrielle1987 5 лет назад
Yea but they're not spending their money on the black features like our hair or getting a wider nose or flatter feet or smaller calves or narrower hips. Only two things, lips and the bubble butt, which looks off because her thighs don't match the Ass. So tired of people using this as an example because 80%of our features are unwanted and not even acknowledged.
@AmethystSnow
@AmethystSnow 5 лет назад
@@MizzGabrielle1987 Name one other race that people try to look like besides black and white 🤣. You don't see people trying to get Asian or hispanic features, do you? I don't think I've ever met someone who said "I can't wait to get eyelid surgery to look more asian".
@MizzGabrielle1987
@MizzGabrielle1987 5 лет назад
@@AmethystSnow you've missed the point. They are not trying to look black. They are not getting kinky hair because it isn't regarded as ideal. They are not getting wide noses. They are not glorifying slim hips, or flat feet/inflexible ankles. It is not only lips and ass and skin color that make black people black. Someone idolizing 5% of our traits doesn't mean they're trying to look black. They only like those two things, the rest for them is undesirable - Not even acknowledged.
@AmethystSnow
@AmethystSnow 5 лет назад
@@MizzGabrielle1987 Did I say they were trying to become black? I said they wanted black features. Read my original post. The way the Kardashians look is more traditional black than white or Armenian, which they are. Look it up.
@AmethystSnow
@AmethystSnow 5 лет назад
@@MizzGabrielle1987 Also Gabrielle, you may want to do some research on non-black people trying to get kinky hair as there are THOUSANDS of tutorials on how to make white hair into afros with millions of views just here on RU-vid. I haven't got the slightest idea what you're talking about with the ankles/feet as I'm black and I have neither and I don't know anyone who does. Maybe that's features YOU have and not the general populace of black women. Learn to love yourself, hun.

@Altoid Bazingá Sure, I live in Prague for 21 years, also I have lived in the Netherlands for a year, and the "minority" there is like a triple size majority in Prague. The roma and the Vietnamese is a big minority true enough, but from what I know there is no discrimination to the extreme of skin bleaching. Actually there is no section for people of colour in any drug store at all. There is a racial discrimination towards roma for sure, but it exist, mainly because of the social position/social integration of roma and not because of the colour of the skin. But that is an issue for another day.

I totally understand how dark skinned people end up succumbing to the use of skin lightening products. My mom was the only dark skinned person in a household of light skinned people and endured much school bullying, luckily her family made her feel supported, my gran specifically prohibited the use of skin lighteners (this was back in the 60's) and educated her about their dangers. Fast forward some 20 odd years later, I experienced the same problem and my mom was in a great position to prepare me for the fight ahead.

It's so engraved into our mind that the lighter our skin the more beautiful we are while in the meantime white pple are paying so much money to get a tan and look less white. +Polaroid Android Jeff Actually it has happened to me and when I started praying a lot many years ago the spirit of competition and selfishness and worrying about what other people think started to leave me slowly.... I had to consciously block out certain things that was being said to me and I watched other people Master it too...when I started to realize what God thought mattered.. it's almost like God caught me in time and it was a blessing because I have one child that's light and I have one child that's dark and I made sure I did not put any of my insecurities on them. a lot of parents and family members have a lot of control over their children and put all kind of things in their head until this day I am glad I trained my children or should I say taught my children to not let people live in their head and if they happen to let people live in their head hey that's how it is... but I consciously made sure I did not pass that curse on to them..I am so glad that I begged God to get bad thoughts out of my head so yes I did experience it but it still amazes me.... just like it still amazes me when people act shocked that boys get molested just as much as girls.... just like I'm amazed that people know how the Illuminati is and I'm amazed they still join. I use the word amazed not in a negative way but I'm just kicking it on the real it's not about people agreeing with me or not agreeing with me... but I know the work that I have to do within myself but I couldn't do it alone and I am glad that I am around people that are insecure but still consciously work to not have people not live in their head and this is not a put-down to anybody that let people live in their head... but I'm still amazed it ain't no beef I'm just kicking how I feel

+Siobhan Fogarty well said...... when I speak on thoughts in your head... you are right you can't get rid of every thought but when you replace a sick thought with truth eventually you win... no matter what the situation is you have people who Focus just like you said focus on certain things and they make it their reality and there's so many other things that they overlook.. light dog short all these people still get cheated on these people don't have the golden ticket but when we tell ourselves that these people lives are a hundred percent better because of whatever we think we are missing I'm sorry I had to replace those thoughts because I saw the reality and it wasn't true... not a hundred percent true certain doors may be opened to certain people but the thing that they are chasing usually is something crazy or superficial I had to stop suffering from the spirit of competition and me and my friends worked on that for a while... sometimes we learn that Spirit from when we are young however I had to work on that we purposely worked on that and I saw a difference. my son is 20 now but he was bullied by teachers I had to get schools phased out teachers in trouble cops bothered him as he got older different things he had going on with him but I always told him no matter how you look somebody is going to love you and no matter how you look somebody is going to hate you and no matter how you look somebody is going to lie to you and no matter how you look somebody will tell you the truth.... your character will outlive you

Well I have two sisters who are naturally fair in the African sense as I'm a Nigerian. It's sometimes hard comparing yourselves to your fair sisters when wherever you go they'll always notice the fair person first. Although I'm confident about my skin tone and strongly against bleaching, it sometimes gets to me when people especially my younger brother teases me about how dark I am from my siblings, but I do Thank God and my relatives especially aunts for my self taught confidence cos they always say I'm the prettiest of all my sisters even if sometimes when I was much younger I didn't use to believe them. But over the years, it has now become a foundation for my confidence, especially when people compliment how cute I look with an innocent baby face..

White people think anyone that is not white is "dark" when in most cases within every non-white ethnic group there is a hierarchy of what is considered dark and what is considered light or medium complected. In the black community dark skin is Lupita Nyong'o complexion. If you have no idea who she is, google her. The video should have mentioned that this issue is specifically in relation to the black community and how dark skin is viewed. This video is NOT about what white people project onto those who are not white. A lot of these dark skin women don't feel good enough even around their own people and that is what leads them to bleach their skin. Brown skin is considered the "safe black" shade and light skin is what blacks seem to praise while dark skin is unfortunately viewed in a negative lite. It's even worse in Asia, especially the Philippines where they are being denied jobs if they look anything but white. In the Caribbean and Africa, those with dark skin are not being denied jobs, it is more of a social issue, another thing that they failed to mention in this video.

Your first statement...so, white people ALL think one way when there is a variety of skin colors...thank you for the racial profile and for the record, THIS white person sees all the colors and adores them all. I look at lovely dark skin and the colors of clothing it is flattered by and the ethnic hair and the gorgeous styles it can carry and feel nothing but admiration. So, please don't say there are all kinds of people in the non-white category but just one kind in the white. Not fair.

I’m an African-American woman. Colorism and skin bleaching is a big issue. Ultimately, you have to love yourself and celebrate how you were created. I love my dark skin and I love being black. I hate that our beautiful sisters in this documentary experienced this. But, I’m glad they’re using their experience to bring awareness to this disgusting issue. Sending you love from the U.S. ❤️

I have always wanted to be tan because the people around me made fun of me for my very pale complexion. But I have learned a lot from my experiences. We all need to learn to love ourselves for who we are, not who others want us to be. It’s very hard to learn how to love yourself, but self love is something that is so important. Just be who you are because you are the most beautiful version of yourself 💕

Both the ladies who are at the beginning of this doc have the most beautiful complexions. Not just in skin color but the quality of the texture. Smooth and plush, with a natural glow. That's what beautiful skin looks like. I didn't grow up with bleaching cremes being the norm. I remember the AMBI bleaching products but I remember them more for evening your complexion.

When I was a teenager (13-15) I used to use a bleaching product on my whole body. I remember mixing them at 4am before taking a bath in the morning. In my mid twenties I've learned to appreciate my skin color and my naturally wavy hair. I no longer use whitening products. Nowadays, I'm more concerned in finding a make-up that would match my skin tone. Unfortunately, my skin in acidic so by midday my face is 2-3 times darker, with or without make-up. Its so frustrating that I have to find a make-up that is lighter than my skin tone that will hopefully oxidize to the right shade

When I was younger, I so desperately wanted to be pale. It took a lot of years for me to realize that 1) it wasn't going to happen and 2) that my skin is beautiful. I'm not even that dark (I'm olive at most), but my grandmother always told me how dark I was and how I should be careful about getting tanned. Now I don't get enough vitamin D!

Black people bleaching, white people tanning, perms, straightening of hair, we always tend to be unhappy with whatever we get naturally, is that "effort" a reason in itself, just a way to prove to society we're not lazy by showing that we invest time and money changing our appearance? We're really funny. It's always nice to feel good about ourselves and we should do what makes us happy, but it's confusing why our brains send us towards some modifications that don't make us better (thinner, stronger looking, having a nicer body shape etc) but just different, at a possible cost of having reaction to substances, plus all the time and effort just to change a red hair to blonde, for example. It's nice, it's fun, it can be a way to break with the boredom of life, but why do we feel we "have to" sometimes? Peer pressure? 😟

Tanning happens naturally, bleaching doesn't. White people don't feel the same pressure nor do they feel disgust by their skin complexion. You can't compare them.
@TheSimArchitect
@TheSimArchitect 5 лет назад
@@alex-np6cj That was not the point of my comment. Sorry if, for not being racist, I don't find something silly as the color of someone's skin can make them "disgusting", the idea that someone might feel that way about someone is sickening.

People in all cultures have their beauty standards no matter how stupid they are, but what I don’t understand is why does it have to be SKIN color? There are so many other ways to change the way you look that won’t cause permanent damage. Why do people try and make SKIN color a beauty standard? Growing up when my friends saw how pale I was when I wore shorts they made fun of me and I never truly understood it. Skins just skin.

I stopped wearing makeup for many reasons...one was because I started to develop an unhealthy view of my skin. I'm quite dark but have never had any issues with my skin but after prolonged use, i started to feel like my skin was terrible and that i needed to lighten it to match the shades that are easily available (crazy, i know). I even went as far as looking up lightening treatments and called several cosmetic clincs to book consultations...best decision i've made regarding beauty is to stop with the makeup

I'm really pale and people comment on that too. I've been told I'd be prettier with a tan and asked if I ever go out in the sun, etc. It's never enough for people and whatever you do the WHOLE world won't be satisfied. So the key to happiness is to be satisfied with yourself and surround yourself with people who appreciate you for you. Live life and spend it being thankful and surrounded by positive energy and love. Don't isolate yourself for what rude, inconsiderate people say. They obviously have a problem with themselves. Yes even if it's like +30 people, that's still not a lot since there's 7.5 billion people on the planet. Sometimes our lives seem huge but really they're small, we don't know so much of the world. So my point is, hang in there!
