The Truth About Skin bleaching -

My love for our uniqueness as black people is one without compromise - our hair, skin, and distinct anatomy is worth flaunting any day. More interesting is the beauty of our diverse shades. From the darkest to the fairest, our unique skin tones are priceless treasures.
My assertion is, of course, not universal as our beliefs have over time been influenced by several varying factors. Society has set a certain abstract standard of beauty that places more value on a certain skin tone and this has led to a surge in the number of people ‘toning’ their skin to meet these standards.
It is then expedient that we have conversations around skin toning and its potential consequences and that is what this docu-story is all about. It's a non-judgmental conversation that would not criticise anyone's choices. Rather, it is about educating ourselves so that we are fully aware of the potential consequences of the choices we make.
It's also important that we acknowledge the pressures that people face from simply engaging on social media which leads to certain hasty decisions. This conversation will help people make more informed decisions moving forward.
The question concerning why we do the things we do especially as black people (a somewhat marginalised/oppressed race) also needs to be asked. So I think it's important we explore the rationale behind our actions rather than trivialising them.
Why are there certain standards of beauty that seem to take us farther away from what it means to be black? Why is it that straight hair, clearer skin, a particular figure, a certain dimension of facial features are glorified over black body features? Why are we putting so much money into the pockets of people who don't look like us but want us to look at them?
These conversations are important so that we can raise a generation that recognises the value of self-love so that we can embrace our flaws, our uniqueness and make a proper, informed choice in the future. Furthermore, it's important so we don't project our insecurities, societal "standards" or how we feel onto the next generation.
We also need to mind what we say and the things we glorify because they can have a lasting effect. Bleaching has been going on for centuries, so it's something that has penetrated our culture and who we are as blacks.
I think it's an important conversation to engage in and more importantly in safe, non-judgmental, non-critical places.

Agreed. My opinion on it is lack of self esteem of gargantuan proportions. The crippling lack of education, specifically world history and Africa's place in it, continues to underpin this deep rooted lack of self esteem. From hair, to food, to names, to religion, to skin, to language, etc there is a scary lack of ability to understand and appreciate our own and it is literally killing the continent.

I see nothing wrong with using a product to even out skin tone. I started using a Kojic acid based soap from the Philippines during showering about a year ago and my skin has never been so even in its color except when I’ve spent days in the sun and gotten much darker, this also evens out the skin tone. So which is healthier if you want even toned skin? A mild kojic acid based soap that you wash with or hours and hours of direct sunlight? My brother was recently treated for skin cancer, I’ve opted for the soap.

I’m very light skin toned however my medical problem has cost me over 4/5 thousand pounds. These companies make dark ppl feel inferior and light skinned people who have skin issues feel inferior because it looks awful. Doesn’t matter what I can’t get rid of my hyperpigmentation ☹️. This is truly where I can say we’re all in this together 😟

When I asked why they were using all that they said so their skin glows! Would you not classify that as bleaching? Or just because you can't see the actual bleaching effect it would nt be considered bleaching?
@LolaOJTV

It is argued that 'toning' is just a mild form of bleaching, since often the same harmful products are used just that the level of the 'whitening' is less.

We have to go deeper into the root and source of this. It has been embedded into us to have white skin and have straight hair . This is not only a African problem, it is in the Caribbean and Asian countries. The Europeans have damaged people of race so much and it is such a same because the people who are lightening their skin are highly educated people and should or would know where this attitude is coming from. It makes me really think, that black people, some black people , do not like being black or like black people. God help us all.

In Asia , lighter skin is related to being from a wealthier background as people who don't have to toil under the sun tend to have lighter skin tones. So this s a complex issue that has to do w social hierarchy/classes ,perceived beauty standards and colonialism as well. And let's not forget that the pressure is esp. high on women to look a certain way in all cultures which is really bad tbh. As for bleaching , people who live closer to the equator do have more melanin in order to protect from the sun so reducing melanin +ruining skin barrier is extra harmful in that case. Colourism is extra dangerous ,no doubt about it

Actually the Japanese lightened their skin before Europeans came to Japan. The Geisha made herself look white, so they were already conditioned to think that white was superior by the time the Europeans arrived. Also skin brighteners work different on light skinned people. It helps achieve a more even skin tone. You read complaints from dark skinned people that milder treatments like kojic acid don’t lighten their skin. It’s not going to! It is however great for getting a more even skin tone.

All over the world people are bleaching their skin. Asians and Arabs alike. African Americans too! It will take a long time for people to accept who they are. This in my opinion is due to old movies where actors where super white with blonde hair (some repeatedly bleached). This influenced Asian movies, as they wanted to look more of white, now with fake hair and bleaching African Americans and Africans want to achieve the Asian movie star look. Yes , we look up to African Americans who started to look fairer, fake eyelashes, weaves, smoothed edges, drawn in eyebrow shape, nose jobs etc. Now everyone can buy the look. We have seen African Americans change from Africa features Asian or more European like features. I don't have to mention names!

Does anyone think that with the onset of people prioritizing "skincare" now, and the publicity that sort of follows it, that more people (moreso, within the knowledgeable community) than usual are actually bleaching their skins, but under the pretext of " brightening" PIH? The difference is mostly noticeable when comparisons between TB pictures and their current selves are made. That glutathione stuff, from the moment I heard of it, just seemed off and excessive, tbh.
