Violence Policy Center put out as part of the Brady II campaign in the late 90's to "restrict any caliber more powerful than a 30-30" as a "Sniper Round".
I keep telling people, the gun control camp argues in bad faith. Right now semiautomatic rifles are “high power assault weapons.” Standard magazines are “high capacity magazines.” Suppressors are “silencers.” If they make progress, eventually lever action rifles will become “rapid repeating rifles” and hunting rifles will become “high power armor-piercing sniper rifles” and we will hear about how nobody needs a rifle you can “load on Sunday and fire all week” or a rifle capable of taking someone down through Kevlar at 800 yards. They already claim 5.56, with about 1,500 Joules, is too powerful to hunt with. Just wait until they find out most deer rifle cartridges like .308, .30-30, or .30-06 have more like 3,000-4,000 Joules.
Shooter was CAUGHT when Trump was 300+ yards away. He was waiting for Trump to move down through the golf course and eventually get MUCH closer to his position.
Exactly. Trump was playing the 5th hole, while the shooter as hiding on the 6th. He had been in position for 12 hours waiting for Trump to play that hole. It was just a matter of time.
Yep, it looks like the range would have closed to within 50 yards at the next green. Haha, I was going over pictures yesterday boring my wife to tears with my SKS theory. I don't know AK/SKS all that well but it looked too long for an AK.
If a skilled marksman with even modest tactical skills had made this assassination attempt then they could inflict serious damage. We are in a dangerous time.
A few things you should note: The shooter is from Hawaii.. out of state.. he flew in.. he did NOT bring the rifle with him - where did he get this SKS that had the serial numbers obliterated? - he could NOT have bought it in ANY store or pawn shop! Also.. there is no way that SKS with 20" barrel could ever fit in the backpack shown as more than half of it would have been sticking out the bag and visible to the public. The shooter was also driving a vehicle with stolen plates.. but the strangest part of this whole thing is.. Trump made the spontaneous decision that day on a whim to go to the Golf Course.. how could the shooter ever have known Trumps location in advance when it was almost a spontaneous decision for him to go there? There are things at play here that are just not adding up.

The weapon was never "used", it was involved. He brought it, but he never fired. He was shot at. That was the gunshot heard. This simply shows that ANY rifle can be used for wrongdoing. There are no "bad guns", although some guns can absolutely do massive amounts of damage. Years ago I was temped to mod my SKS with an aftermarket stock and mags, but realized I was being stupid.
@@Mike80528 I got a folding stock for my SKS just before the Clinton gun ban. IMHO the original stock is perfection. I changed it back to the original, the way God intended it to be.
Thank god the world has someone out here like you! Very impressive channel, I just found it. When I turned 18 my dad gave me an SKS Russian 1953 Tula beautiful cherry wood type stock with a folding bayonet. Mine was lost in my house fire in 2012. I was in law enforcement and I got to my home quicker than you can imagine and I was going for that Sks. It just meant so much to me. Thats what i think. That explains the look of the mag heing further from the trigger guard but it had a AK side mount with optic and sks's dont have side mounts like that.@@An2oine
I was also saddened when I heard that an SKS had been used. One of my first thoughts was, Why would he choose an SKS, scoped or not, to make a precision shot at that distance? The SKS is a very fine rifle for its original intended purpose, but it was never meant to be a sniper rifle. Luckily for Mr. Trump, this would-be shooter was untrained/misinformed.
As a convicted felon and a non-residènt, his purchase options would be rather limited. Additionally, it doesn't appear that he was very knowledgeable about firearms. Third, it would appear that he was waiting for a closer shot when he was discovered, so he may have had some understanding of the capabilities of the rifle and himself. I'm waiting for them to blame it on gunshows!
The last guy used an unmagnified red dot, this guy seems like some creepy 1diot who acts like be was some important guy in charge of thousands of ANA SOF, not the brightest.
Interesting, informative video. I owned an SKS for some years. I have also been a long range competitor for decades, so I can appreciate the points you make. No need to worry about these laws. The rule of law is breaking down.
@@HootOwl513 We will eventually find out this was the same type operation between the CIA and the Kennedy assassination. I'm convinced the last two worked with them like Oswald.

Buddy of mine had a Carcano, lucky to get six consecutive shots in a trash-can lid size circle!!( that was in early '70's) In late '80/early '90's, co-worker bot SKS @gun-show for $59. Asked me to help him set it up. After scrubbin cosmoline for a week, Sight-In day arrived. 6 of us tried/6 failed to keep shots within a6foot circle @ 50 yds!! Tearfully, co-worker took it to next gun show, sold it for $40!!
I've got a half dozen different "carcanos" and they're all plenty accurate. This is a lie perpetuated by morons that dont know. How many times have I heard some bullshit like "those won't hold a 5 foot group at 10 meters, they're trash!" from some dumbcock bubba that's never even fkn seen one I couldn't count at this point.
SKS is Bad! Must be Banned! But... since I live in a... sanctuary household... ya, that's it... iam willing to take in that... that... SKS, behind your right shoulder! I will even pay for shipping!
Fun fact it's actually banned by name in Washington state because it's an "assault weapon." By name, so even if it's in its original configuration and not bubba'd, it's still banned.
@paulhare662 I hope Justine doesn't latch on to this pre- election as a way to harvest more votes by making canada "safer" for all of us. It's just the kind of BS that a lot of uninformed voters go for.
@@paulhare662 Poly, the spin Doctors etc have been all over the SKS for years now. The CBC and various (mostly Quebecois) media have run stories on it.
The gas system is a dead giveaway that it is an SKS in the photo. I agree with everything you said about the SKS. Excellent rifle. I paid $105.00 each for two new Norinco rifles, one in 20 inch and one in 16 inch.
Crazy how the guy in the video said he (and presumably others) like SKS for their collector value. Wasn't too long ago that SKS had zero collector value! Like you said they used to be around ~$100 with deals on multiple. Things change, man.
I thought it looked like a Saiga with the factory furniture, but an SKS has a pretty similar profile, especially if you slap a synthetic stock on it and don't post a clear picture of it.
@@Sig_P229 I think “close” is a relative term. This guy seems like a real dork, and yet he was able to predict Trump’s location, establish a viable shooting position, and leave the scene with a pulse. My concern is that the skill barrier to endangering a president’s life seems to be much lower than I assumed.
@@Triangle26 I think you're missing the obvious - all of the information is being provided to these guys by folks in the government. Well, the way facts are NOT making sense about this event, I wonder if he was handed the SKS and never owned it in the first place. But you’re correct about how the SKS is going to be used as an excuse for more Gun Control.
@Triangle26 they've been trying for YEARS to ban the SKS up here in Canada but guess what? It doesn't meet ANY of their definitions of a prohibited firearm. Keep trying anti gunners!!! The internal pinned to 5 mag we have in Canada and the long barrel classify it as NR (non restricted) which means ANY gun owner in Canada can use this for hunting, sport and collection without any restrictions. This is why the Liberals hate it
Gas block and lack of pistol grip was my indicators. Sks has the 45 degree gas block while the only other similar platform is the saiga rifles which have 90 degree gas blocks.

I am also canadian and feeling kind of sick right now. Seeing as how Justine has already tried to ban the SKS in the past and how we are made to pay for everything that happens in the U.S., the future does not look good for shooters here. I am still holding on to hope, though, for an earlier election given recent events.
Sks is a brush deer rifle, nothing more. And the mentally deficient in Ottawa and Toronto should be looking at the special kind of stupid gangs with their glock switches and scorpion machine pistols that were never legal in the 1st place.
I've owned 3 of the SKS rifles and I am far, far, far from being an expert. Thanks Triangle for your knowledgeable and insightful videos. Very well done.
As soon as I heard it was an SKS, and the serial number was obscured, I went to T26 to see if I could find how many places they put serial numbers on an SKS. Of course, the numbers could not be matching, but now I'm curious. All I can remember is the receiver, bolt carrier, top cover, stock, and mag.
Using AR's, AK's and SKS's for gun grabber bans. Nothing is a coincidence. Next up is the good ole Remington military style deer sniper rifle with military style deer sniper scope. Oh, and that military surplus ammo!
I think its a 2 much of a coincidence that every gunman goes out of their freaking way to choose the crappiest rifle for the job, literally any other thing would have been better, even grand pappy's 30-06 hunting rifle. Its almost like they want to have ammunition to go after "assault weapons 👻👻" It makes me laugh they ran with "ak47" as soon as they did, because lets face it, dont u think a multi million dollar business specially the news has a couple squints working for them?? if a regular guy is able to see its an sks wouldn't multiple big ass news companies be able to see its an sks? I think they went with ak47 because it sounds more scary than saying sks
My first rifle was an SKS-D a SKS that took AK mags from the factory. It was a POS and was happy to sell it. I would go against anyone without fear of getting hurt. I did find a Russian SKS at a gun shop and its a fine addition to my collection. It shoots very well. The SKS is not an AKM.
I am a firearms enthusiast and totally agree with everything you said. But it doesn’t detract from the fact that the guy was there with that rifle and the intention to shoot the ex-president, and enough capacity to have multiple attempts as well as apply suppressing fire in his attempt to get away. It’s luck the guy was an idiot. And maybe he had a misfire on his first round.? That could be why he cut and run so quickly.
I had a friend of mine years ago call the SKS "The Commie M1 Garand". Easy to use, easy to load, easy to clear, easy to disassemble and in the hands of the average Joe or Charlie, a fine weapon, reliable and accurate enough to get the job done. Plus you get a bayonet!
Mechanically the AK-47 is a lot closer to the Garand. Long stoke piston, 2 lug rotating bolt that look suspiciously similar. Kalashnikov studied different weapons when designing the AK, but you can see he took a lot of inspiration from the M1.
@@ellisdee2106 I’m familiar. On the flip-side, the AK is a detachable magazine fed, select-fire weapon. The SKS and Garand are both semi-automatic, clip driven weapons.
I rad a guns and ammo article in the 80s where they texted various garbage rods for accuracy. They include the AK47,theSKS ,the moisin nagant ,and the 303 SMLE ,they found all of these rifles capable of 3,to 5 inch groups at 300 yards. Except for the AK .Furthermore it showed that most of the rounds stabilized at around 300 yards and groups didn't open exponentially after that. More than accurate enough for hits on a human size target. It took 3 shots to range in but i once took the head off of a bowling pin at 550 yards with an AK . Many might be surprised bt the practical accuracy of some military arms.
First off, the only scope mount system, I've ever sen for a SKS replaced the top cover. With every shot, the zero changed. The 2 SKS rifles I own are Russian and are all matching numbers, I won't be swapping the top cover for a cover with mount. The ceramic tiles this mouth breather wouldn't do anything to stop a magnum hand gun cartridge, a 9mm or 40 would be deflected. Ballistic armor ceramic plates are compressed under high pressure for high temperature cure. Ceramic floor tiles are built from a slurry (not typically aluminum or zirconium oxide that's dried and then fired.
@@Dread_Pirate_Homesteader Have you attempted drilling a AK or SKS receiver for a side mount? I've done 20 plus on AK's, and if you don't drill on the bore axis, you're not getting the scope zeroed. Just .10" up or down will use up all of the scope adjustment. The reason that top cover mounts are so prevalent is access to the bolt/bolt carrier.
Just want to state depending on the construction quality those tiles absolutely can stop full power rifle calibers although I doubt a .338 the Secret Service likes using would have much of an issue getting through. Edit: Unless they were very over built which it doesn't look like they are. So he had SOME idea of what he was doing.
I dropped a buck two seasons ago with a Tula SKS unmodified. It wasn’t my first choice of firearm, just what I took with me for predator protection while I checked my trail cameras. I agree that it’s capable of making a 300 metre shot, I certainly would prefer to use something else for those sorts of distances. The 7.62x39 cartridge dispatched my deer ethically with a single shot from about 100 metres with my old eyes using iron sights. I imagine the would-be assassin was probably laying in wait for Trump to get closer to ensure a better shot as his plan “A”, long distance shot was plan “B”. Just speculating here.
Heard Jesse Watters on FOX say, "SKS." Being a C&R military firearm enthusiast for over fifty years, I was not sure about the rifles ID given the media description and the poor quality of that photo of the rifle leaning on the chain fence. Once I heard Watters say SKS, I immediately thought yes, with the bayonet removed (so much for banning rifles with bayonet attachments), a new replacement stock (as shown in this video), and with one of those AK47 magazine reconfigurations. Your comment regarding the media's inability to properly ID a firearm hits the mark. I was a young firearm enthusiast when John Kennedy was shot. I clearly recall a Dallas sheriff telling the media that the rifle used was a German Mauser, "I ought to know, I was in WWII." OM! I just noticed the insignia on your chest. I had a WWII Ike jacket with that insignia. It belonged to a US OSS corporal and was made on 6 June 1944.
I bought a Russian made SKS in 1995 for $89. Brand new, still in cosmoline, never fired. It came with 10 stripper clips, a rubber magazine pouch that held 5 loaded stripper clips, an oil can, a front sight adjusting tool, and sling. Not to mention a bayonet, cleaning rod, and cleaning attachments located in the but of the stock. It was extremely accurate with iron sights out to 300 yards. A 30rnd box of 7.62x39 , Russian army surplus, was .99 cents. I loved it. It made a great saddle carbine/ truck gun. Unfortunately my ex wife traded it off for something when I wasn't home. Now the cheapest ones I can find, Chinese Norencos average $700. Russian made are going for approximately $1200.
1st time on your channel. Great video on the subject. You made a lot of valid points and understand the subject well. I appreciate the content. Subscribed!
Well done. I must confess, I did not know that the SKS had become a "collector" gun. I can remember when they were offered for sale for $99 each, all gooped up with cosmoline and wrapped in brown paper.
I use to be a casual military firearm collector, but rarely a shooter. Back in the late 70's I bought an SKS from my brother's drug dealer friend. It must be a Bring Back. I've still got it, never fired it. Don't remember what I paid for it but couldn't be over a hundred. I'm amazed by the values being cited.
No exclusion exists in the 2nd Amendment for magazine capacity. Nor is there one for muzzle devices, rate of fire, caliber, etc. and THAT was by design.
A buddy of mine has a bubba-fied SKS that he asked me to put a scope on. Went with a Magwedge mount. Best option I've seen for the purpose, holds zero like a champ. Now he can hit the broad side of the barn anyway...
Thanks for cutting all the fat away and simply talking about what you like. Main reason why I admire your channel: you stick to strictly what you know and nothing less or more
I picked up a Yugo SKS which came to me with the Archangel stock setup, with those same 30 round mags. I think that's what the shooter was setup for. I restored the original factory configuration because I got it because it is historical aspects. I also reinstalled the bayonette. I have to replace the gas tube cover with a matched wooden version but I haven't done that yet.
When I see “SKS collector” it reminds me of a friend’s brother who spent four years and tens of thousands of dollars restoring a Chevy Vega (and no, it wasn’t even a Cosworth)! The answer is Why?!?!
The number of times I resisted the urge to buy an SKS in my younger years (kids to feed) makes me sad often. I believe $69 would have bought one. Sigh.
