Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) - Deep Dive 

Don't you just love it when a group of gen-xyz sit around and bad mouth a movie that's 110% better than their clothes and haircuts. This genre was a norm and delightful to those of us that grew up and watched these movies. I lost interest in Star Wars midway through the first 30 minutes. Granted, one thing they agreed on was not caring to talk about someone's pregnancy of one of these new gen potatoes. What I find hard to believe, WTF would subscribe to their Patreon page? They forget that the movie is not reality based, it's fictional, try to get that through your cognition.

That's... actually genuinely delightful. I feel bad for the guy that it wasn't a launching point for a real career.

My high school friends game me SO MUCH SHIT for liking this movie and defending it.

I spent much of my misspent youth at the Musee du Cinema in Brussels. I unironically love this movie because it reminds me of sitting in the dark watching some obscure film that I hadn't heard of before and haven't seen since. Sin City was much later.

@@fabrisseterbrugghe8567 Sin City was made by someone who had more experience and therefore understood the medium better. It's tricky to put live action actors in a fully/mostly virtual world. There are so many things that need to planned for, and those plans need to be flexible because sometimes it just doesn't look right when you have everyone in front of the camera. That's when you are spending $1000's pre minute and you need to make quick decisions. Experience will help you know when you can "fix it in post". Sky Captain was pushing the boundaries. As a working VFX artist at the time, I was impressed with what they were attempting, but I didn't expect them to succeed. Everything I read about the movie gave me the impression they had learned what was possible with VFX, but didn't really understand how difficult it is. It's hard. Watch any major VFX film's credit roll all the way through and try to count how many VFX artists there are spread across multiple studios. As as professional VFX artist I think it's the least important aspect of filmmaking. Don't ever use it as a reason to not like a movie.

At my school, the general take came together in someone's joke line 'Plot holes you could fly an aircraft carrier through' followed by cheers and/or posing

That was also my thought while watching this video. Only problem is that at the end the giraffes look like they are normal sized in the background. So maybe some people working on those didn't get the memo.

Hmmm... That's one of my favorite movies, but I don't disagree you. Both have striking visual pallets set in an entirely fictitious world. It's been too long since I've seen either to make any other comparisons, but thank you for reminding me I should Watch City of Lost Children again

the HPL historical society did adapt call of cthulhu and the whisperer in darkness as pastiche black and white (and even silent film in the case of CoC) movies. I haven't watched them though so I don't know how successful they were. It was in the 2000's though so I'm quite scared at the level of amateurishness this might entail.

@@maximeteppe7627 As you should be, IMO.😏 I couldn't get through them the first time. One reason being, as you note, the time period in which they were attempted. *It shows.* But I also have an aversion to productions which scream _"fan film!"_ Particularly in the acting department. I did watch 2001's _"Dagon"_ all the way through. While I recall it had decent production value, I don't remember much else about it.🤷🏼‍♂️ 2005's _"The Call of Cthulhu"_ was a 46 minute silent film. At times I feel they came close to making it seem like a proper silent era film. Unfortunately, much of it still had a modern feel, given how it was shot and processed, as well as the use of young actors trying to look older. 2011's _"Whisperer in the Darkness"_ was a noble attempt, but IMO their use of black and white wasn't enough. It still looked too modern. Too fan-filmy. The aforementioned silent version of _"The Call of Cthulhu"_ did a better job of making it seem more like a period film. But that is just my take. Ultimately, I feel if they were made more like _"Sky Captain and the Something Something,"_ the strong comparisons to the classic films they tried to emulate wouldn't occur as much. I haven't seen these in a while, but recently added them to my video library (along with the anthology film, _"Necronomicon,"_ from 1993), as I plan on watching them again soon. I feel I should at least watch them in full. Btw, there's a 2007 [Japanese?] anthology film on RU-vid¹ called _"H.P. Lovecraft's Dunwich Horror and Other Stories."_ Three stories are brought to life by animated clay puppets and miniatures. This the movie that made me scream 'IS HAVING FUN A CRIME?!' when my friend and I started a sarcastic fake argument as a joke and then got... more invested than I planned.

Yeah same. I loved this movie when it came out and have only recently discovered that apparently it's considered a bad movie? What the hell?

that's something that never really made sense to me. everyone says the plot is either nowhere to be found or hard to follow but i found it easy to follow. it's not a straight line but the curves add to the experience. it also helps that i had the DVD and was able to watch it multiple times.

trust me, it's worth it. i still have the DVD and watch it every now and then. it's one of the few movies that i can watch over and over again and never get tired of.

There was definitely a montage playing of me and Baby Whats-Its-Trunk hanging out and going on whimsical-ass adventures, for SURE

I had forgotten how much they took from Fleishers Mechanical Monsters cartoon until i saw this.

As for Brotherhood of the Wolf...more accurately it can be said that it's Soul Calibur: the Movie. Because some parts of it feel like backstory for Soul Calibur characters.

Most of these stars were just trembling on the cusp of The Big Time when this movie was made.

Too Many Tapes take is phenomenal, I barely even subscribe to anyone, but I subscribed to his channel without second thought. I don't know why I had misfortune to pick this channel to watch another video. I regret coming here, deeply.
