I have been a floor sleeper since I was fourteen. I am now 77 and feel as though I am still fourteen. I'm happy to know other people others have discovered the benefit of floor sleeping. Thanks for sharing.
Hello, I know your comment is 1year past. But thank you for your comment. I am thinking of sleeping in the floor. And I am thinking of how I am about to do it. I am concerned about moister build up while sleeping on the floor. We would be sleeping in a Vinyl Linoleum floor unfortunately some Kind of modern flooring. I am thinking oft building some Kind of wood surface but i am unsure. Do you have any recommendations for basics for sleeping in the floor? Like surface for sleeping on? Hygiene etc.? Thank you and all the best!
First four nights was a nightmare.Long story short....I will never sleep on a bed again.Yes...lower back pain drove me to this....its definately the way to go.
im korean, i used to sleep like until nowdays. its very comfortable. but i will buy my bed because im lazy to remove the dust and fold it every morning lol. + i have to clean my room floor every night or morning
Second this notion. ALSO NEVER EVER UNDERESTIMATE THE DAMAGE FACTOR OF AN **ORTHOPAEDIC** Mattress!!!! I removed the mattress, ordered a plywood plank for the base and now with single topper i cured my back pain caused by a bulged disc in 2 weeks!!!
Yes! I decided to sleep on the floor last night because our bed was making me toss and turn. I slept like a baby!!🤗 My boyfriend is now laying next to me on the floor snoring lol. It’s working for him too. Thanks for this video!
thank you for sharing this! I've been sleeping on the floor for 1.5 years after watching this and it's been one of the best decisions I've ever made :)
Agreed. I have bee mostly sleeping on or quite close to the floor 40 years. Let me tell you, the hype is real. People my age (50s) suffer all sorts of back, hip, and knee pain. For a couple of months I bought a mattress to TRY. T&N. You know them. My body felt AWFUL every morning and yes, I, too, tossed and turned. The floor is my everything from eating, typing, reading, yoga, sexing (TMI), texting, and, yeah, sleeping! Try not to let anyone make you feel bad about preferring the floor ir not wanting a big over priced fancy bed with over priced bedding!
I really love your experience and awesome to know that even as I get older this will still work for me. Appreciate you sharing your story on both of my videos. Haha it needs to be said sex on the floor as actually pretty good. It is funny how people react sometimes about it. Especially when I go to other peoples places and say that I would rather sleep on the floor a prefer it but they like to think that this isn't true and convince me otherwise. Now I have a photo on my phone I say seriously this is my actual bed. I hope your well Raw LawGirl lovely to hear from you again :)
It’s even more important to stay on the floor when you’re older because we get so stiff from sitting in chairs and sleeping on mattresses for decades. I’m 56 and really struggling now with stiffness and bad back, hip and knees. Thanks for your video and your lovely positive outlook.
Its really helpful plus coasts next to nothing as a friend gave it to me for free and then using blankets to bulk it up. Cheapest bed I have ever had :) Plus easy to clean and move anywhere :)
NeliaRose wish my parents would let me get rid of my bed lol or if the whole world could stop using beds so much cheeper and better for environment also doesn’t take up entire room
I have very much the same hygiene/laundry routine. I'm 70, BTW...I use natural coverlets and quilts.I use a light foam roll up pad, and make up the bed each evening, rolling it back up and storing everything in the morning. I have been a floor sleeper for some years, ditto hubby. And when we had pets, they would snuggle in at the bottom, too!!
This is really intriguing! I have a lot of back/shoulder/neck issues and I'm thinking about trying it. When I went away to college, I didn't get a bed for the first two weeks and I slept on a yoga mat and sleeping bag on the hard wood floor. The first night or two were terrible, then it was like the best thing ever. I found it really hard to adjust back to a regular bed. I think it's something everyone should at least try for a couple weeks. It's amazing what the body can adjust to!
Yes I think it is definitely worth a try especially if you suffer for physical pains. It takes a little time to adjust but like you said afterwards you never want to go back! :)
hi! I got my sciatic nerve stuck, and my chiropractor suggested that i sleep on the floor. I was reluctant but did it. Inside a week i was feeling better. For me the only position that was comfortable was on the back. I would suggest for someone that doesn't have any problems to do it progressively by putting good layers in the beginning. Have a nice day and a nice back.
That is great that a simple thing like sleeping on the floor could help you in such a way. Thank you for sharing I hope you are having a nice day and a nice back as well :) :)
I started sleeping on the floor recently. It has made a world of difference in a good way. I use a memory gel foam pad with sheets and blankets and a small pillow. I wake up refreshed. :)
Ironically turns out the Chinese had it right all along! Ive lived here in beijing for a while and their standard beds are amongst the flattest and hardest ever! No sinking in 😂😏
I know so many cultures do this. For some reason the western world got into beds and never looked back and it makes no sense when floor sleeping is so much cheaper and can be so much better for you. :)
Ironically this is the reason why I started sleeping on the floor. I used to live in Beijing for half a year. And my mattress was super hard. When I came back to the Netherlands I started to develop back pains again. And I'm only 27. One night I just had it and started to sleep on the floor. Best decision I've ever made recently!
I think I'm finally going to try this because i love sleeping on the ground when camping (while many friends prefer bringing an air mattress). I just don't like that feeling of sinking in. And I totally agree with that feeling of good alignment and pain relief from laying down on the floor. I'm a side sleeper though so I'll likely need more padding for my hip.
That is awesome to hear. Yes we I hate camping mattress and they always deflate in the night and you end up on the floor anyway. Yes start with a good amount of padding especially as you adjust to the food then take it away or add more. It is so great because you can really adjust it to fit your needs and make it the most comfortable for you. Good luck and let me know how you get on with it :) Have a lovely weekend and please let me know the name of the book that your quote comes from :)
super interesting video! Sometimes I sleep on the floor when I can´t sleep. It helps me to relax a lot. Thank you for sharing you experience! definitely will consider sleeping on the floor it more often
It is so comfortable. I have also done that before I started sleeping on the floor when I was struggling with pain just laying on the floor and how much it helps. So why not be on the floor all the time makes sense right. Let me know if you have any question and I can do my best to answer them. It is defiantly worth trying out. Thank for sharing your thoughts. I hope your having a nice weekend :)
Hi! Do you still use this setup of your floor bed or did you upgrade to some kind of futon to have less layers and something more practical? It’s day 5 for me, the worst it was the second day before adding more cushioning - i just slept on an old thin yoga mat and a carpet straight off😅 I felt my hip bones as a back AND side sleeper lol! Learned I have to first ADJUST my routine and have more cushioning before sleeping on almost hard floor. Today I even forgot my knee pillow sleeping on my back during the night too (I fell asleep on my side) and I had no straining in my lower back (they say you should use a knee pillow when sleeping on back to lower your lower back position but I felt okay! So grateful I came across floor sleeping! I feel like camping haha!
I've been sleeping on the floor for about 2 years now and the number of times I've slept in a traditional bed I can count on one hand. I can not do it for long ( 1-25nights) as like many others here on this comment section it really bothers my back and neck. Also for the Japanese futon I can not use it for long periods as it is on rare occasions I utilize it but nice to have when need a little comfort without having over kill on bedding. I did start on the floor 2 weeks (1st week being the hardest for me), followed by 3 months on a japanese futon before going back to the floor. I have a carpet on top of hard wood and depending on the seasons I will used different things. In summer typically it is just a sheet on the carpet and my blanket, winter I have a knit blanket (for warmth) folded and flannel sheets and blankets on top, no pillow. I would suggest to any anyone keep the floor clean, vaccum daily or a few days during the weeks and wash your bedding weekly if you keep it down on the floor all the time. If not it is nice to have the space to utilize when not sleeping and the room you can do other things in as well :)
I did this with a cot cushion on the floor for about a year because I had no choice since my old bed had to be thrown out. I love beds, but I do remember having no trouble on the floor. You can make it cosy 😊 Kinda wish my parents didn't get me a new one. It's so soft and I sunk in it too much so switched it for an older one we had in the guest room. Hopefully we can get rid of this old one and I can go back to the floor soon!
Beautiful! In the Islamic tradition, Prophet Muhammad used to sleep on a straw mat and Muslims love to emulate him. So I am trying to implement this sleeping on the floor into my life. I think you also inspired me! Thank you ❤️
I think you've just won me over, I love my cosy bed but I also have the worst back/neck problems! How many days did it take to get used to the firmness of the floor? 😊
I really hope it helps! I took me about a week to fully get used to it but only one or two nights until I could really sleep through the night. I would also give yourself a lot more cushioning then what I have to start with just put all your blankets and maybe if you have a rung down as well then see how you go. Take things away if you feel like it later but give yourself plenty to begin with. Let me know how you go and if you have anymore questions :) Good luck!
It takes about a week... I've been doing this for over 3 years, it's just amazing. I can totally relate to this video! Great to see someone talking about it!
I just started with floor sleeping. It's my third night now. Is it a problem that I don't use a lot of cushioning? Directly sleep on the ground (carpet), the first night was hard. But the second night was awesome.
wiebe V aken so you didn’t sleep with anything under back? I woke up and my back was a little sore I guess I’m just use to have the mattress pressed up against it
Ive been on the floor sleeping .for 5 plus years it seems like the hardness some how absorbs the tennion..an when ever i exsperiance a rough sleep its because of like other inside the body things like caffeine. Or what ever .the floor is best read a book where this guy was traveling with other traverlers in a truck across a barren place in africa at night tey would stop an sleep on the ground in africa .wow. love your power u exude
Super cool to watch. I'm very conscious about my spinal health. I practice great posture. I'm only 17, glad I started at such a young age. Last night was my first night sleeping on the floor. I have carpet floors but besides that, the only thing I used was a thin duvet which I kind of mummified myself in, not really. I woke up, and my back and neck was more healthy except with this really weird knot in my back. I suppose it will go away the more I get used to it.
Thank you so much for this video. :) It's time to get rid of my current traditional bed since I've had it well over 12 years and it's very uncomfortable from the years of use. I checked out one video where the person is using a traditional Japanese futon (mattress & cover) that are hand made but YIKES!! over $800!! Your idea of a yoga mat with another covering on top, then a sheet over those two and a duvet is MUCH more economical!!
This is my experience as well. I've been sleeping on the floor for a little more than a month now, and I've never felt better. I actually moved to the floor because I couldn't find a comfortable sleeping position in my bed, and it nearly drove me crazy. But then I decided to try out floor sleeping, and I've never had a better night's sleep, compared to when I used to sleep in a conventional bed. Much easier to get up in the morning as well.
It is pretty awesome because if you need to move makes life very easy. Yeah give it a shot and hopefully it is something that if beneficial for you :) Going to be making some more floor sleeping videos soon so stay tuned if you are interested :)
First night was the best night ever! Second night was just normal. The third night I woke up with back pain again. So I hope this fourth night would be better!
I’m 16 and been sleeping on the floor for a few months now. I thought I had back pain from an injury, but I think it was just from sleeping on a lumpy soft mattress. Glad I made the switch!
I have watched this after my first night of sleeping on the floor again. I used to do this all the time when I was younger, but then I stopped. Until yesterday when tossing and turning at 3 am became to much. And I must say: I am still in love with this. I have to get used to it again, but I don't know why I ever thought sleeping on a matress could benefit me in any way shape or form. I am currently sleeping on my mattress topper and will be working my way down to a thinner surface or just the floor hopefully very soon^^
I bring my bed up every day because I also sleep on my yoga mat, which my cats would totally destroy if given the chance. :) And OMG I could not agree more about the difference between a conventional bed and floor sleeping! My sacroiliac joint (in the pelvis) gets sore if I lie on squishy surfaces. I also used to have chronically tight trapezius muscles, which I no longer have. I sleep so much better and have lots more dreams now too. It's hard to understand how humans have chosen beds over floors.
Thanks for sharing your experience. My husband and I sleep on a 3.5cm firm mattress pad on the carpet and absolutely love it. I don't think I could ever go back to a conventional bed. :)
4:51 I also used to study and do homeworks on the floor finding it so natural! My mom kept saying to sit nicely at the table but I didn’t like it as much as homeworks doing on the carpet 😂 And I did it intuitively correct for my body!
Normal beds are so gross when you think about it. I’ve experimented sleeping on the floor, I like it, my cat not so much (he thinks it’s play time not bed time). Anyway I’m moving in a week and giving my bed to the dumpster! I can’t wait!! Hopefully fur baby adjusts ;-)
I use interlocking foam mats -- the kind that you would see in a children's play room. I like how, when sleeping on the floor on your side, it keeps the pelvis/hips from sinking into a soft mattress and thereby results in a stretch to the lower back muscles that you would not get if you were sleeping on a mattress. I would tell people that live in an apartment that they should liberate themselves from their mattress and use it instead to put up against the door to the hallway so that it dampens the sounds coming from the hallway... and it also dampens the sounds of the person in the apartment going out onto the hallway. Sounds such as if you are caterwauling or maybe fluffin' in your apartment.
That is a really good option for cushioning! I also agree when I wake up in the morning my lower back and the rest of my body always feels great! Awesome way to use the mattress you no longer sleep on. Thank you for all the great suggestions and advice. Hope your having a lovely holiday :)
I am over 50 and started sleeping on the floor by accident after a back pain from work many years ago. I sleep on a thin carpet covered with bed sheet at night and one pillow. I didn't know the benefits then but I felt so good, I still sleep on the carpet. My headache, back pain, hip pain, stiff neck and shoulder all gone little by little. Some creepy crawler have easy access to me but still sleep on the floor.
Love the video thanks. I am just thinking of congestion. So I had that and my mom took me off milk and dairy and shakes. No soft drinks. It worked my head cold went away.
Yeah when you have a little congestion it can be harder to sleep as flat as you do the spoor but you can find a way to make it comfortable and like you said if you just change when you are consuming you can also stop the problem :) thank you for sharing!
I converted to floor sleeping a while back and now I drool thinking about bedtime, lol. I haven’t slept so enjoyably and straight through the night since childhood!!! My question is do you think it’s ok to leave your bed out? I know the big perk is being able to roll up the bed and put it away but I find that tiring and prefer my bed to be all the time like a traditional bed. At the same time I’ve heard of beds needing to be able to “breathe” to air out from sweat and prevent mold ? What do you think? Does that only apply to traditional mattresses? Is there a way to have the best of both worlds? :/
Lol... My mattress is really hard and has springs in it. I'm used to it but other people tell me its uncomfortable. When I try a really fluffy bed, than I can't sleep because I feel like I'm being swallowed by it and can't move.
I slept on carpet with a hospital foam piece for a while, then 4" foam mattress on plywood for over 10 years. Now I have a mattress, but have a thin pillow lengthwise along the spine with a thin cushion for pillow. So, my spine is not sagging. Works great when traveling. Am getting a platform bed, will look for a way to pad it. I don't have a baseboard heater, and the floor get quite cold, so platform bed would do it, and it has 2 drawers underneath. Beside, my floor is not clean.
I do the same thing for my upper arm and leg muscles :) Have been doing before I knew of your channel but you really inspired me with this amazing information! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
i must admit, i been sleeping on the floor for two weeks. The first week was horrible. my poor body was not use to it.My lower back was in so much pain. I am practicing to sleep on the floor. But i do notice i have more energy sleeping on the floor vs bed. wish me luck as I continue my journey on this new change.
I've been floor sleeping for 6 months on tatami mat, but I've not cleaned, changed my sheets or anything like that. But hey I'm a single divorcee male... great video
The daily need to fiddle with an actual floor bed is too much work. I simply sleep directly on the hardwood without a pillow. I’ve also been sleeping without a blanket as well.
I think people are different. I found in my own experiment that I slept very well on a mattress as opposed to the floor. It was hard for me to get to sleep on the floor and I could not get comfortable. I did this experiment for 6 months on the floor and finally gave up and went back to my bed... which was far more comfortable and didn't present the problems that came with my bed on the floor.
Slept on the floor or a lofted bed (basically a board) for about 8 years now. Can't sleep in a normal bed anymore my body is so used to it. Funny thing is the ad before this video was for a nectar mattress lol
It is so interesting to me what our bodies adjust to. Hahah i know someone else commented about that. Sneaky internet trying to convert people to the beds. Its freaky how the adds are related to what you are looking into. Same thing happens for me one Facebook.
Dear friends, besides healthy benefits and space saving here are some argumets that seems interesting about sleeping on the floor . I will be more than a glad , to find out more about your experience, feelings and oppinions , so leave the coments below ) 1) Makes you more grounded , takes away anxiety (depression ) you feel relaxed . 2) Helps to feel your body better . 3) The spine holds the structure of all our nerve endings, the nervous system. A healthy spine makes for a healthy nervous system. Sleeping on a hard surface, allows the spine to be aligned properly and is able to rejuvinate the whole body throughout the night. Ultimate healing 4) Being on the floor has such an instant calming effect. 5) Helps to get rid of all the tension 6) Lay on the ground you feel more connected to the earth which is very helpful if you consider that deep inside we're still animals.
Wondering if you've had guests over who do not sit on the floor (like parents and older family), and how you've accommodated them? Hosting non-floor-sitting guests is my biggest concern about going furniture-less. Thoughts?
I feel like if I have guest there where more respect family members and not just friends who don't really care I would want to meet them in a cafe or something like that as I'm staying in a place where I share with many others. If I had my own place I would only every have a very tiny place and would also feel that guests would be happier to eat in a restaurant of cafe. When you make your home simple with not much in it them the role become you living room and going to your local cafe with friends becomes more what your up for them having them over in your house. I think I really depends on how much you entertain but my bedroom is not where I want to have friends or family to chat it my private space and would rather meet them somewhere else. The book Goodbye Things Talks about this. Hope thats helpful :)
That is also a good option! I believe we should create our homes and space to suite us the people who spend most the the time in it. Unless you are someone who loves to host people and really find that something you do very often then having a home that is completely centred around your needs is more valuable. :)
I'm not all the way on the floor i think. I have a very thin spring mattress ($75 twin bed sized mattress, so it's very small), and it's about 6" high on the floor, and it is the best sleep i've had in a very long time (been about 3months now), and i really didn't know why at first but i've been looking more into it, and i've noticed that i've been doing better with getting up earlier and on time in general. I have all the floor space i want -which was why i downsized and got rid of big clunky furniture (i prefer wide space over a stuffy room anytime). I was originally supposed to find a new bed set (headboard, boxspring, rails, all that stuff) to make it into a daybed, but this is much better in my opinion. Plus I can easily rearrange my bed in this space whenever i want by pushing it across the floor, it's really just been a nice experience just as it is. From videos like this, i was sort of wondering, is it more beneficial to simply have a bit of cushoning down as bedding like what you have, or does my small springy mattress essentially have some of the same benefits long term? I'm only a couple of inches off the ground, but i'm wondering if the floor would be better? Or is 6" of mattress between me and the floor still considered as 'floor sleeping' in a way?
I love this video, it is so inspiring! I have been dealing with back pain for ages, and for a long time I thought it was necessary to sleep on a really hard bed, but then over time I wound up putting foam toppers onto my bed because I thought the hard bed was causing my tight lower back and hips. And now I have a softer bed, but my back is still not feeling great. I'm considering sleeping on the floor. Did you notice any type of hip or shoulder stiffness when you first started sleeping on the floor? Some people say that a hard surface can cause pressure in your joints....but maybe that is just a myth. Maybe I will start off just sleeping on the floor for a couple hours at a time...I am a side sleeper. Do you ever feel pain when you sleep on your side?
lady who loves cake you should consider a cervical neck pilow for your neck and place one pillow in between your legs while sleeping as well. I do this while sleeping on the ground. But crazy enough... after four days of sleeping on the ground... for the first time ever I was able to fall asleep lying on my back. Also consider learning to fix your posture, Jermey Ethier has good videos on this. The backpod is also another good thing to help for back pain. And maybe one of the most important things to get your body back into better shape if it’s been hurting for a long time... is to search online for the best chiropractors in your area. Check how many stars they have and how many people they have. Then read the reviews so that you can get an idea on what sort of things they have helped with and see if it’s relevant to your issues. Best of luck to you. I hope your pain goes away.
Raising For Him I would like to use one if I settled down somewhere and wanted to invest but for now I'm happy with they way I have it. I might be a little more effort to build up the bed but like Yup!It'sCoop said it is super cheep to use what you already have. :)
Sleeping on the floor is awesome. My back feels so much better. I’m going on my third week right now, but I have previously gone a good two years on the floor. I stopped having to go to the chiropractor. I’m hoping to get the same response this time around. Good job with your video👍
Sleeping on floor is the best thing I've ever done. My back is better than ever. Thank god 4 Indians doc. They were the ones that told me 2 do it. I don't regret it. Try it people.
Thanks for the informative video. I've been considering buying myself a futon but since I sleep on my side and my hips are wider than my shoulders I'm afraid that my spine would be in a strange position if I don't have enough cushioning. Do you sleep on your side? Does it work well?
I sleep on my side on a futon currently and it works great. You can always order one online test it out for a week or two and then return it. You won't know until you try and my body would be different to yours so can't say for sure :) good luck and let me know how you get on :)
i had a lot of soreness in my lower back in the beginning. i think it is due to the fact my spine naturally curves a bit too much so sleeping on the floor aligned everything. you definitely need to move slowly when you wake up. i do some rocking stretches, aiming at whatever is right when i feel tight
Love it...minimalism. but..my situation is not too friendly to sleep on the floor...i have seasonal 4-6 legs unwanted visitors and dust daily buildup...frustrated!! eventhough i have a new wood floor since last year...dawn.😏😖
That is unfortunate well maybe you can think of a way to raise a sleeping surface that is firmer for you. Or you could put a netting around you like they do in countries that have a lot of critters. They call them mosquito nets I believe :)
joana martins A futon on the floor? I have a futon but it's on the frame..the middle sinks in so I've been considering getting rid of the frame and putting the futon on the floor so its even..
I use the layers of blankets method and I'll see about picking up a yoga mat because I'm considering trying yoga. It'll have a dual function. I slept on the floor for a year and half and when I had to move I started using a bed again and it made my back hurt so I went back to the floor haha.
I have been sleeping ont the floor for a few weeks now but i don't want to get rid of my bed because i have friends over several nights a week and what if they don't want to sleep on the floor?
So I live in the middle of a city, and we have mice... I would love to sleep on the floor but the idea of mice running around me while I'm sleeping kind of creeps me out. Do you have any ideas on that?
Raw LawGirl it's an old ass building and I don't want to set traps that kill them. I've been trying to get rid of them in animal friendly ways for a month and nothing works. And because it's a big city they crawl into the small spaces in our home
Hey Hanna I can understand your concern . I would suggest using pallets to raise you off the floor and then lay a plank of wood across from the hardware store to give you the firmness. You could find the pallets for free from behind a grocery store or ask the store themselves and then to get a sheet of wood form a hardware place should be pretty cheep. Then you will be raised up but still have the firm surface and also not sound loads of money. Or if you already have a bed frame then just buy a sheet of wood that fits it and then you will also have a hard surface. Unfortunately you won't have the benefit of being about to move the bed to have more space but you will still have the benefits of a hard surface. I hope that helps all I can think of off the top of my head. Thank you for the comment and I hope you have a lovely day :)
I sleep on the floor every summer, because the heat get captured in the matress. Every season I had a very good amount of sleep. Winter was to cold for the flokr, thought. 😅
I was watching people sleeping on the floor with Japanese futon but I was wondering if it was mandatory. Watched this video and it is definitely not necessary.
Roshan Dsouza For me side sleeping is nearly impossible on the floor. If someone has enough cushioning on their body, perhaps it’s more tolerable. My hips dig into the floor and the result isn’t good. Also the he shoulders are bound to suffer. Several layers of nice blankets can work and can be adjusted for the individual & season. NO APOLOGIES!!
