Like with my third eye, i just saw a scene from that kind of movie where slenderman is just talking to camera about his problems while trying to hold back tears and how he once was popular and the guy behind the camera asks him questions and it just cuts to scenes from his earlier days where he scared little kids, and some scenes from now where people laugh at him. The only way a Slender Man film would work is if it follwed the formula of a Lovecraft novel. Someone is, for whatever reason, trying to track down this crazy cult that supposedly worships the creature. Through months and months of madness and psychological torture, we only see the creature in vague images (subtly in the background, in paintings, in reflections for brief moments, etc). We (and the protagonist) only get to see the creature in clarity at the very end, before they succumb to the insanity that they got involved in. ... Or, you know...just do what Marble Hornets, Tribe Twelve, and EverymanHYBRID did (which are all Lovecraftian stories that work similarly to the plot I described).

I know this comment is ancient by internet standards but just in case you see this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-la78vswBF54.html It's a very low budget student film made for RU-vid and its honestly so much better than the 2018 movie. I really like it ^^
@nathanjora7627
@nathanjora7627 4 года назад
Marcel la Rastaban that’s not the lovecraftian formula I’d use. I’d go for the « character is dumped into a strange and secluded community » formula. Not really original, I know, but I think it’s more adequate, since... well, there is really no point in summoning slender man. It’s not like he can offer deals or whatnot, if I remember correctly, nor influence people to do his bidding, contrary to the central figures of the lovecraftian cults you’re referring to. But the thing about investigation is a good idea, since it gives a reason for the character not to just get out once he starts to be targeted by the slender man, so rather than a cult, why not investigate on a series of murders or the death of a relative ? Still not original, but unoriginal stories can still be well made and interesting, so it’s not too bad. Still another way, perhaps a tad more original, and that could tie in really well with a lovecraftian plot and a character such as slenderman, would be to start in a mental asylum, wether we follow a guard, a patient, or a doctor, or why not a combination of the three. Of course, in nearly all of these, the problem is « how do we make space for the unexpected » which is kinda central to the horror genre. A movie starring the slenderman would highly suffer from that the second you know it’s in there, because we already know what it is, so it only leaves the question « can they escape and if they can, how ? » (which is fine, just... not enough in my eyes. ‘Cause if we have only that, then all of the movie’s introduction becomes boring as hell since you just wait for the moment things come crashing down). To get rid of the need for the unexpected, the simplest thing would be to start in medias res, and for that the mental asylum setting would work very well, wether we are shown one of the patient and start with the question « how will he escape »+« is it real », or wether we start with a doctor or a guard and we have the question « how will he survive ». To have the unexpected, an interesting way would be to play on the victim’s identity rather than the killer’s. To take the precedent setting, we could’ve something like two patients, one gets killed early on so we can start to worry for the second one, and then, still following the surviving patient, rather than have the slenderman target him, we have the slenderman target someone from the personnel, or perhaps worst : a relative in visit (the problem with that being that the connection with the victim weakens, which means that the issue may lose some interest in the eyes of the viewer). The interesting thing with that is that, since we follow a patient, we don’t actually need the slenderman to be the monster we are shown/the source of horror (for at least a part of the movie), we could’ve the patient have hallucinations he has to overcome (or something else, there are plenty of hurdles someone mentally ill could be put through when trying to escape a mental asylum to help a relative). And the source of horror from the slenderman can come in two forms : either indirectly (by having the true target somehow communicating about the slenderman with the protagonist), or directly (by having the slenderman somehow communicating his intentions to the protagonist, though that would only work if the target stays near the asylum, but that’s a good thing since that way we can come to know the target which gives us all the more reasons to fear for its live, and root for the protagonist). Well... that’s a long comment -_- I didn’t mean to originally ^^ But still, it proves how we can still have plenty of horror scenarios that would work quite well with the slenderman, although admittedly they’d probably work quite well with any supernatural threat, which kinda begs the question : « why the slenderman ? ». To which I have... no answer ^^ Hhmm... I wonder what are people’s thoughts on the subject, do you have any idea why a plot would specifically revolve around the slenderman ? (That is, what kind of plot would necessitate the slenderman specifically to work optimally) I hope what I said make sense, I know that it often time doesn’t, wether my ideas aren’t well put together or my English just fails me -_-

@godofthecripples1237
@godofthecripples1237 5 лет назад
I'm sick of hearing this. It's just not true. Pointless gore and jump-scares is what is constantly hurting horror movies. You don't need a bunch of blood and screams vomited into your brain to be scared of something. There was a low-budget web series named Marble Hornets that started most of the mythos involving this character. It was incredibly good and picked up a decently sized fan base. It's what this movie should have been. But, obviously, the people making this didn't actually care about the lore or making the movie what people wanted it to be. Anyways, Marble Hornets did have gore, but barely ever. Because it wasn't necessary. It focused on the psychological elements of what would happen to a person, and it was terrifying.
@mr.outlaw231
@mr.outlaw231 5 лет назад
@@godofthecripples1237 You do realize Marble Hornets MPAA age rating is rated R.... right? So... do you have another example that you want to try out because the one you used kind of proved my point. Edit: Oops. I was looking at the movie, not the series. My mistake. Still, I didn't say anything about needing gore. It is just that PG-13 movies seem to lack the drive to go over the edge. I mean, would a PG-13 movie show a man driven so insane that he is gently bashing his head against the wall and sing "Mary Had A Little Lamb", while standing in a dirty, ill-kept asylum with the whisper of dark spirits echoing throughout the room?
@godofthecripples1237
@godofthecripples1237 5 лет назад

@@godofthecripples1237 Yeah, sorry. I thought there would be an age rating or something. I was talking about the movie "Always Watching: A Marble Hornets Story". Though, if the movie has the same content relative to the web series, then the age rating should cross over.
@sealtheeggomelet5942
@sealtheeggomelet5942 5 лет назад
@@mr.outlaw231 Well, there was The Ring which definitely pushed the edge of PG-13. There's also Supernatural, and while there isn't much horror in the newer episodes, a lot of the horror episodes pushed the limit as well. And while it didn't push it to the edge, A Quiet Place made good use of sound (or lack thereof) to create the air of suspense. Films don't need to push it to the edge to be considered horror, or even good horror. A lot of the time the drive to push it to the edge is a major downfall of horror films.

I haven't seen the movie, but I SERIOUSLY disagree that the Slenderman can't be scary... The concept of a tall, faceless man who stalks vulnerable people, kids or the mentally ill, torturing then psychologically before taking them, there's a reason he became so iconic... Unfortunately then people created a game that relied too heavily on jumpscares and once the fucking weirdos who take feckin Jeff the Killer seriously got ahold of him and started making fanfictions... Well, it'd be kinda hard to have any gpod reputation after that. Marble Hornets is a good indication of how to make the concept work, and though I didn't expect ANYTHING from Sony, I'm still kinda disappointed that they've just strengthened the idea that there's no merit to the Slenderman... Then again, at this point it's entirely possible that there really isn't a way to bring back his fright factor after all the exposure, after all fear is of the unknown, not the already known, still, I kinda wish we could see a good iteration of him, it'd just be fun seeing an Internet icon like that on the big screen with an ACTUALLY creepy or at least, as I said, fun movie.

Exe Lior And said way to make slender man actually work is to focus on the psychological aspects, not make him a standard monster
@godofthecripples1237
@godofthecripples1237 5 лет назад
I couldn't agree more. One thing I felt like this and the second game probably suffered from, will that they tried to make the character look scary. Which goes against the point of his design. If he looks scary, then he's no different from every other boring monster out there. The fact that he looks generic and makes you scared of him over time is what makes him such a fantastic character.

Marble Hornets was basically the ONLY good thing with Slenderman in it, and it was good because you NEVER saw him. He was just... something off, and all you saw was the aftermath of his passage. Hell, there's a book I once read that had a chapter to it that was basically a full ripoff of The Shadow Over Innsmouth, but with the twist that it was told in a diary form and had some really good atmospheric writing, and that's what made it work so well: the atmosphere and buildup, the tension. Things getting gradually more and more wrong.

@@CynicalReviews Mistakes happen. Much like the film itself. I have to say the most egregious part of the film is that the studio intentionally kept it far away from theaters near the area where the crime occurred showing they know how disrespectful it is. I even heard rumors (RUMORS. Take it with a grain of salt) that they were originally going to use news footage from the crime in the movie but ultimately decided to cut it out for obvious reasons.

A very good review of an awful cash grab. I was once a fan of creepypasta's back when I was a lot younger but even then I never found slender very creepy. If I was told to make a creepypasta into a film I wouldn't have much choice as a lot of them are not of a quality that deserves a film adaptation, my choice I guess would be candle cove because there is an interesting story there that can be expanded on. It would require a lot of work to get right but I feel it could be entertaining. I don't know though, I would rather get original IP's creating a new story rather than rehashing old internet horror story's.
@CynicalReviews

My main gripe is that they didn't even try. They clearly put no effort in. I'm pretty sure they chose Slender Man purely because it's one of the most well-known and recognisable creepypastas both among fans of the genre and outside observers, but they did absolutely nothing to build on it, and made a crap film, so nobody would be happy. What was even the point?

Not that this saves the movie in any way, but as to the complaint about not learning anything about Slender Man... I disagree there. The less we know about Slender Man, the more scary he is. He stopped being remotely scary the moment people started trying to figure him out and create his rules. Now he's just another monster to put in a category. Something comprehensible. For a good example of Slender Man media, one of the originators, Marble Hornets, is a great example. We may learn more about Slender Man's (or as they call him, the Operator's) effect on people, but he himself remains a complete mystery to the audience and that's why he remains scary throughout the series. Like I said though, doesn't save the movie from being a honking piece of shit

I just watched it, and while the movie is absolute garbage, I can see a couple of interesting themes plastered all over it: -a weird cult -technology that infects your mind like a virus -teen pregnancy(and maybe even child sacrifice) -mental illness -parental negligence And all of it was abandoned. I can tell by the short lenght, the wonky editing and last minute botched special effects. I theorize that one of the character was pregnant early on(weird love scene out of nowhere) and odd dialogue about a girl getting knocked up. And then Slenderman wants her child, hence the nightmare about the branches coming out of her belly. No wonder it's a mess: they Frankensteined this movie beyond recognition.😞

Shame :/ The Arrival was a good game I think, although I didn't get too far because I legit found it too scary (but I play horror games in the dark with headphones on, so I'm creating my own little hell!). I would have liked this film to be great and theorising about who or what slenderman is, and why he acts this way. They could have gone down a supernatural line, and made a nice ghost story about a man trapped between worlds. Or they could have made slenderman a powerful figment of your imagination that drives you insane. I don't think this film needed gore (not that it even has that), it just needs an actual narrative.

I remember growing up on the Slenderman Mythos and being genuinely creeped out (then again, I was like 10 and grew disinterested in creepypasta by 14). What genuinely scared me was the mystery around him, not necessarily Slenderman himself. Slenderman was always more intimidating when he’s in the back of a black and white picture, or when he’s among the trees and hidden so well that you have to double check to see if he’s actually there. I think what makes him so unscary in this movie is that the movie focuses on making him an active, violent force, wildly chasing the main characters through the woods. This was never what Slenderman was; he was always passively driving his victims to madness and takes them when their so mentally messed up that they don’t or can’t fight back. He’s basically if Gaslighting was a monster. And this movie did the mythos a disservice by making him a generic, visible threat. I’m not scared of Slenderman at all, and I do think it was scarier when I was younger, but I feel that this movie could have been scarier if they had focused on the creepy ambience the character brings.

From what I understood, the movie was originally going to be losely based on the two twelve year old girls who attempted to kill their friend but there was a lot of protest against this due to its exploiting nature and because it was pretty fucking disrespectful to the victim and her family. I'm pretty sure the State wherein the attempted murder took place boycotted the movie entirely in protest and in order to protect the victim and her family. The movie was reshot in order to change the narrative to be a more generic horror flick instead of a story about a girl who kills her friends in the woods. If you remember the trailer, it hinted at a lot of things that never happens in the movie. That's why. Overall, this movie got the treatment it deserved and I hope this will be the last time they try to bank on the attempted murder of a preteen girl.

I was actively disgusted when I saw that they were making this. Like, the original creepy pasta was bad, and so the only reason this story is actually in the common consciousness is because two twelve year old girls tried to kill another one. Like, I just. I know it's a cash grab, but this cash grab is predicated on the stabbing of a little girl by two very mentally unstable kids. Like. Does no one else find this unethical? Can you just..not make this shitty movie? Especially since it's doubtful the film was ever going to make some kind of metacommentary about the effects of the internet on the minds of youths or some such bull that would have maybe justified its creation.

It's not necessarily in the same vein, but Cabin in the Woods, another awful horror movie was so bad that the directors, writers, and producers wanted to give up on it, but the studio Lionsgate prodded them into believing it was a "good" movie and worth putting any amount of effort into. Another clusterfuck.

Disagree the creepypasta was bad... Or at least, there was a period where the story behind him was great, like an actual Internet boogeyman or campfire story, the concept was fun as well until he got overexposed and you got all the shit. Also people have killed over a LOT of things, should any of those concepts be abandoned just because of some mentally ill people? Nah, you can't let them ruin things for everyone... If I got killed by some dickheads wanting to, idk, appease Jason Vorhees or something I wouldn't want the horror icon to be shunned for the rest of time. Not defending the movie but I don't agree with your points.

If there had been some actual though put into the story it might have had the potential of being half decent. Slender Man is supposed to be a bit like Cthulu. He can exist in multiple times and demensions, if he sees you he can quickly drive you insane or stalk you over several years letting you drive yourself to madness before killing you, he can corrupt others to do his bidding and he has a signature way of killing when he does it. Sounds like a cool monster in concept. They couldn't even get that right.

Even before the movie was out and saw the trailer for it, I somehow knew this was going to bomb. Just from hearing people's reviews of it, the directors didn't follow the Slender Mythos at all. Like... have you guys seen Marble Hornets or any of the other stuff that people had done in the past to bring Slenderman's mythos to life?? I'm a fan of creepypasta in general, but if they got one thing wrong, that makes my blood boil. I'm glad I never saw this, I would've probably left the theater with how disappointed I was. also, summoning Slenderman with a video?? what is this? the ring?! You know, they could have started with a child disappearance or idk, one of their friends going missing at the beginning and it becoming some sort of mystery with Slendy chasing them and finding out she was being stalked by him for years! (like a series I know...) There is so much you could do with his mythos that would make it more compelling than this! no! let's just throw crap that we have no idea what we are doing into a movie and hope it works. Ugh... ...ok rant over.

I remember when Slender Man was first gaining popularity it genuinely freaked me out a bit because some of the original pieces written about it did a convincing enough job that it was "real". It took me a while (a few hours worth of online reading) to finally realise that Slender Man WASN'T a cryptid based on old mythology and was just made up. I don't think Slender Man could ever be a really good monster movie because most of its creepiness comes from NOT seeing it and NOT having much information. If they wanted to make a good horror film, they should have gone with "The Rake". That thing is creepy as hell!

This movie could have been so good and there could have been so many version based on the different stories written about him. The Canon I follow is that Slendy saves children from hard times like abusive families debilitating mental illness by coming to the children in visions and dreams and depending on the extent of the abuse he either goes after the abusers himself or if it's really bad he gives the children closure by giving them the power to kill them themselves. And then takes them somewhere. There are different "somewheres" come believe he kills the kids or simply kidnaps them I like to think he takes them to a Paradise where the children will be loved ant taken care of. There's even a creepy pasta where Slendy was responsible for Jeff the killer. I HATE Jeff the killer but the story was really good and compelling.

I would have liked to see a Slender Man movie that explores the lore surrounding Slender Man, his origins, taking elements from similar pre-existing mythology from other cultures, tying together a backstory for him, as well as showing him as a threatening force existing in the modern world. What sucks most about this movie isn’t even that it’s as bad as it is, but that they COULD have done something with it! I don’t understand why they can’t just make the Slender Man movie that people would actually want to see? Idk about anyone else, but I would have loved a movie focused on the effects of hysteria/paranoia/heresay. Imagine the friend was actually just abducted by a man in the woods. In fact, I think it would have been cool if they guy she was talking to online was actually some creepy pedo guy and he lured her in with some fake slender man bullcrap and abducted her. However, her small group of friends only see the monster and the myth. Nightmares start, paranoia and fear sets in as more girls and boys go missing. Some teens joke about it like "ooo don't go into the woods or Slendy will get you" but I imagine the main group of girls don't think it's funny at all. Fear can make people see and do crazy stuff. I imagine there being a b plot of the cops trying to find the ACTUAL killer/kidnapper, but it shouldn't be the main focus. The main focus should be on the main girl and her slowly growing more and more scared and paranoid over a tall tale and becoming unstable to the point where she rounds up the other two friends (one can be on board with it, while the other one can be reluctant) to go searching for their friend in the woods and to summon Slenderman to get their friend back. The main girl (at this point off her rocker) can probs freak out and think Slenderman is after them and the more fargone friend could probs freak out as well and that's when they split off in the woods. Idk I kind of just have this image of people going mad over something that doesn't exist and can be explained with logical means. It's happened before. The Salem Witch Trials, etc. I think it would be better if the cast was a bit younger though because boy can children's imaginations go wild.

part of the original slenderman inspiration is a series of short found footage style videos that are probably longer than a full length movie. They're really well made and actually almost convinced me before i read the wikepedia page that explained the story. It was really scary and gave me nightmares. It's a part of what made slenderman spread like he did. the fact that source material like that clearly wasn't even looked at is soooo disappointing. i mean, it looks like the writers barely even researched the lore that the internat has created. It's right fucking there. you can find ALL of it in minutes. what happened in the writing room??? Edit: forgot to mention, the youtube series is marble hornets, but I'm sure most of you knew that.

It seems that the mcu and the fox marvel films are the only thing that interest me in Hollywood these days

It had some potential. It's not like its impossible to make a good film about Slender Man. They just didn't try.
