Kinda wished they took this as a moral of the story road not this... would be been more scary in terms that people are the ones that we should be afraid of. Like that one real life story about slenderman where the girls almost committed murder cause of their delusions about this slenderman. Ike maybe yeah add the horror to make the audience think it's real in the movie but in the end its revealed that it's all in their heads and that the scary thing about it is the kids who went crazy and believed in a lore or story. Kinda wished they went that route
Yet another letdown to the Marble Hornets franchise. Embarrassing that a bunch of college students can make a better piece of fiction than an actual studio.
Corbin H i still remember in entry 18 when you first see masky and he jumps up from the couch, literally making me scream and shut my laptop lid back when I first saw the series in 2011. That series is the most perfect use of found footage I've ever seen.
So I have a fun story about this movie: it was my second or third date with this girl. This move was so BAD at some point I took off my glasses because I didn’t want to watch it anymore. I turned around to say sorry to my date about the wasted money, she laughs and says “subtle, now your glasses are not in the way” and kisses me. We start making out. That’s all what we did for the rest of the movie. We’ve been together since then. Thank you Slenderman.
I know. I don’t know maybe I’m a dick but I kind of expected people to at least know that other slender man media exists than the fucking game. Feels bad man.
How did it take them 9 years to write a shitty horror script and exploit this character? In the meantime, Slenderman already went from a mysterious internet myth through a RU-vid let's play sensation to a dated meme whose only unironic use is found in the worst creepypastas and fanfics. It's like if someone made a serious disaster movie about Y2K.
Sony are so out of touch that they probably didn't know about Slender Man until recently. They saw how popular it was and thought they could capitalise on that. Too bad they're like 8 years too late.
I don't know why they didn't make it Found Footage. It was such an obvious choice and a clear way to pay homage to all the Web Series and ARGs of Slender Man. People are---well, were---passionate about this Urban Legend/Creepypasta.
Because far too many moviemakers don't give a shit enough to really learn the source material behind whatever IP they're adapting, these days. They just exploit the hype surrounding the source material to try to make money. Their loyalty is to themselves--not to the source material, and not to the fans thereof.
I recall the guy who invented slenderman was actually inspired by lovecraftian horror when he came up with the character. And boi, pulling off lovecraft would require more than just jumpscares and used-up horror movie tropes I can tell ya that.
Cassie Barns Victor Surge (his creator, his real name is Eric Knudsen) once had a genuinely scary creature that had many callbacks to Lovecraftian horror. Nowadays, he’s kind of a joke.
The 3 reasons why the Slenderman Movie was doomed to fail. 1: The tasteless timing. They made a movie after an incident where someone was almost stabbed by her friends to death in the name of the fictitious creature slenderman. It's so obvious they are riding off the fear of just that one incident and not actually using the right material for a movie, which brings me to my second point. 2: The lack of good inspiration. The creators of the movie clearly did not know slenderman like people making a movie about him should. they did not use any of the good slenderman material out there, like Marble Hornets, Everyman-Hybrid, Tribe Twelve, Dark Harvest, and many many more ARGs. All of those series's I just mentioned popularized slenderman BEFORE the game slender even came out. They dumped 99% of the writing and universe creation over what looks like a fricken 2 page creepy pasta. This brings me to my last point. 3: Cliche and Crap. Since the movie relies entirely on jumpscares and imagery, they missed the one chance they had to make slenderman not look like a joke again. Nobody will ever take slenderman as seriously as intended because this movie will attract more people, and disappoint them. This will result in more people disliking and making fun of the concept of slenderman. The cliches and this movies failure will be slenderman's downfall in culture... unless somebody renews it with either another new and fresh webseries around a year from now, or they add the tag "Comedy" to the slenderman movie making it look like a parody. Calling it a parody is probably the only thing to make their failures and flaws look like jokes.
If you don't care, why are you here in the comments section of a Slender Review Video? By all means, I get what you mean thinking that slenderman not being spooky whatsoever. The cause of said un-spookiness is due to over exposure of garbage and underexposure to good content. It's like saying all people who like black people need to die because I haven't met a good black person in my life. Generalizing a topic because of certain exposure is a terrible way to obtain accurate facts. Check yourself if you want to enjoy something in your life.
I don't think the stupid ones are not the ones who watch it. I honestly think the true idiots are the ones who say the movie has good writing/characters/plot, not the people who expected a good movie and got fooled out of their time and money to see it.
It's a strategy in movie production to get super good advertising just to make their terrible movie look good. Look at The Hatred, Unfriended, Friend Request, and that one movie where a girl is stranded on a rock for 35 minutes (I honestly don't remember it's name, the movie was so unmemorable.) The best way to counter this is by leaving bad reviews on the movies so less people go in to see it.
Maybe she thought he would take note of such a noble gesture and grant them both safety. Because he totally has shown through the entire movie he's a malevolent, empathetic being willing to talk things out, right? That went poorly.
Slenderman is a dramatic romantic comedy about Ari Slenderman, a Brooklyn 20-something struggling to embrace his identity as an Orthodox Jew in a modern world. Starring Rob Schneider! Rated PG-13!
A found-footage Slender movie could work. Just imagine every time you see Slender Man, the screen turns to static like the game. *EDIT:* Yeah, I know about Marble Hornets and I am a fan. I'm just thinking about a proper high-budget movie.
I feel like it would have been a much better movie if given the Excorcism of Emily Rose treatment. Part horror, part court case. Make it difficult to tell if the girls are just nuts or the boogeyman is real.
I truly Loved that movie "The Excorcism of Emily Rose". In my opinion its been one of the better movies that I've seen in quite sometime. As I Absolutely love horror movies but in my personal opinion its incredibly difficult to find any decent grade A horror flix anymore!
@@laurene988 That's the right answer. We've all seen our bullshit *based on a true story* hook, but this with a court case is better suited for SVU. Which of course SVU went ahead and did.
I think the German (or Austrian?) movie that Exorcism of Emily Rose was based on is creepier and more interesting. It doesn't have THAT jump scare from Emily Rose (you know which one), but it's more oppressive and you question her parents and the priest more in the German film.
Just saw Slender Man today and did not know what was worst ...... The movie or.... the three 18 yo girls that kept talking durning the movie and would not shut up even when people told them to stop
I don't understand why even go to the movies if one is just going to talk to their friends ?? thats what bars, restaurants, the park, the beach ect are for
Art Mienz oh my god I tapped the time thing and my phone did the glitch where the frame I was at was melting and it was on his face and it actually scared me XD
Slenderman originates from a scary photoshop contest that took place on the something awful forums back in 2009, and the user Victor Surge uploaded the first 2 photoshops of what he called 'The Slenderman.' Basically turned into an urban legend 'creepypasta' meme on the spot with people uploading their own photoshops, and writing little short stories all with the same (and rather cliche) premise that the slenderman is an abnormally tall and thin, faceless man/ghoul (usually with multiple tentacle or treebranch like appendages) who stalks and preys upon children which people began to link with some old German folklore 'boogey man' type figure. The meme was pretty much absent on the youtube scene save for that audio file of the man paranoid and distraught after his daughter was kidnapped by slenderman, and the Slenderman song. So there was a lot of freedom for new things on the youtube medium. One day Troy Wagner who frequented the something awful forums decided to call up his friend Joseph DeLagge (butchered his last name) and asked him if he wanted to make a found footage video project. Joseph was up for it and while Troy was headed over to Joseph's place to discuss and write for their new found footage style thriller mystery which was originally dubbed as 'the slender tapes' he came up with a much needed new name. Adjective, Noun: 'Marble Hornets.' After roping their other friends Tim, and Brian into the project, along with the creation of the totheark channel and Jay's twitter account in good ARG fashion, the series fully kicked off with the forefrunners of the Slenderverse following closely behind. (Oh, and with Marble Hornet's unique depiction of the Slenderman as the sinister figure know as 'The Operator' they raised the bar pretty high for how the slenderverse should handle the character). But eventually the game 'Slender' (which was inspired by Marble Hornets) hit the scene in 2012 with the big letsplayers uploaded their respecting lets play videos and then the whole thing just blew the fuck up. More slender games were made, the original game got a sequel made by blue isle studios and had the help of the Marble Hornets guys (or THAC boys) for the writing. A few fan movies like 'wendigo' came out but weren't very good or popular. The mass hysteria pretty much died down after a 'Always watching: a Marble Hornets story' bombed in the box office. Everything in the slenderverse is moving steady for a while then yadda yadda yadda girl stabbed like 28 times by her two dumb fucking friends (that believe Slenderman was real and were cringey as possible about it) and their genius parents blamed the internet for influencing their children as if they have no power or responsibility over them at all. Anyway the girl survived, it was all over the news, a reaaaally bad documentary was made, then Sony ran out of ideas (again) capitalized off the media buzz and *BOOM*! here we are lol
Bobbynibbles The movie is pretty different from the game, so they can add any kind of violent death they want. The Conjuring is rated R and doesn’t have much violence at all. MPAA is starting to rate horror movies based on how atmospheric and scary they are.
Bobbynibbles Slender the game is actually based off of urban legends that go back hundreds of years, the American adaptation of slender man was kinda less scary than the German Urban legend, he was originally thought of as a forest fairy that would viciously murder bad children that would sneak into the forest late at night without their parents permission, cause of death would always be being impaled by one or more of his tentacles and then the child would never be seen again, I like the older legends and the newer ones as well, I’m disappointed because there was a ton more information they could have used :(
Saw this movie tonight and without even thinking twice, my friends and I decided to walk around a park late at night in the middle of the woods after watching it for something to do and it didn't even cross our minds that we should probably be a little scared of the woods at this point. What a piece of trash movie.
Half In The Bag has an entirely different style from this. These videos Chris make sometimes for fun, whereas Half In The Bag is a more serious discussion format where they poke fun at Hollywood constantly and have an amusing little sideplot with Mr. Plinkett.
Check out the Marble Hornets RU-vid channel, it was a long running found footage series that first played out as a shady channel uploading really weird mysterious videos until you realize that it's scripted and it's about Slender Man. It was really well done for the time, at least how it started out.
the fact that it was also a live ARG game at the same time made it even better back then, there was real audience participation and code breaking that had to be done. a bit of the magic is gone with that aspect being over, but its still great
God i remember bingeing the shit out of those. . . Closest thing to 'scary' that i had come across for years and years. . . All done with fuck all in cash, good on em
Wow, the movie You just mentioned watching the trailer of, "The Nun" I found Absolutely terrifying myself!! Its hands down a 10 compared to the slenderman being scored at lower score of 1 or 2. Very good point about the coming attraction to the movie The Nun as it seriously made me want to run rite out & see the movie!! An extremely well done movie in comparison.
Oof not venom that looks good marvel would never allow venom like vulture they prob do something like evil nanobits that control spidey thats it and cant wait for morpheuis sony with the comeback and dc makeing a comeback with shazam
they should have put him in the backround constantly throughout the film, and the characters hardly see him. That way the viewer is getting tenser while watching the film.. perhaps he could even start get closer.
That’s the type of movie that would scare the shit out of me...and it would be interesting if at some points you really can’t tell whether it’s him or just a normal person and it kind of drives you crazy
I miss that brief time when these two lived close to one another and made alot of videos together and even appeared as "co hosts" or "guests" in each others patreon podcasts.
I'm not lying when I say that this is probably the worst movie I've had the displeasure of seeing. I was actually giving it the benefit of the doubt, even when I saw low review scores. But then I had to watch it, and I was checking my watch every 5 minutes after minute 30 because the movie is BORING. I've never walked out of a movie in my life but if I hadn't been seeing it with someone, I absolutely would've. It was a waste of my money but even more than that it was a waste of my time. The "characters" are so one-note, bland, and lacking depth that I'd be reluctant to even call them one-dimensional because that would mean we knew anything about them. Here's everything we know: Katie has a drunk father, Hallie has a sister and does track, Wren... exists, and Chloe used to have a dad I guess. That's it. We're supposed to care about these characters but they aren't even uniquely portrayed; they're just meat puppets for the Slender Man to kill and torment in really disappointing ways. The lighting is so dark that for half the movie you can't even tell what's going on. I get that it's a horror movie and it's gonna be dark, but nearly every single scene (especially any of the ones in the woods) the events are pretty much invisible. The sound design actually wasn't bad, but they used the same thing every single time to denote there was some Slender action afoot. The "plot." Good god. I could sum it up on a sticky note. "Girls do summoning ritual for Slender Man then he drives them crazy and kills them." That's it. There's a little side plot with a person one of the girls is messaging (AleeyCat97 or some garbage like that) who knows about our boy Slendie. She disappears after typing nothing but cryptic, stereotypical nonsense and we later found out that she had seen Slim Jim in the woods and checked into an asylum and that's it. It was pointless but they painted it like it was a really big deal. There was also a side plot about Wren taking Lizzie (Hallie's aforementioned sister) into the woods to see the Thin Guy. It felt like it was shoehorned in just to create some character conflict (which it failed to do) and give our main character(s) the motivation to willingly give in to Emaciated Jack. Is it even scary for the villain to kill the heroine if she literally asks for it? The answer, in my opinion, is no. Especially when the way that Hallie goes out is that she's just kinda absorbed into a tree. I could go on and on about the failings of this movie. The pacing was jarring and overall way too slow, there were plot holes everywhere, most of the setpieces for where the horror was going down were stereotypical and uninteresting (and also really hard to see because of the lighting,) the dialogue and character interactions were so clunky and poorly written that no one seemed human, Slender Man rarely actually shows up to do stuff, and there were a ton of questions and characters just left open-ended (we don't actually know if Chloe died, the last time we see her is staring out a window half an hour before the end of the movie.) It was a pathetic excuse for a movie that was just bad. Not so bad that it looped back around to being good (like The Room and a lot of old slasher flicks,) just boring. Don't invest in Slender Man. If you want some good slender action just go play the original game or watch Proxy: A Slenderman Story by Mike Diva.
Joseph Mavero Check our Night Mind’s Break down of EMH and Marble hornets. He goes BALLS DEEP in both franchises and explains everything in great detail.
Augusto Figueroa yeah I was thinking this was gonna be a better version of Marble Hornets since it had a big budget but I think Marble Hornets is more interesting
To be fair slender was popular in 2009, and a web series called Marble Hornets was popular then converted into a game. So basically the game is based on a ARG
I don't know wasn't that the time of the 12 year olds trying to kill their friend cause of Slendermen ? If it was maybe thats why they didn't do it back then
Hey Chris great vid as usual. I just wanted to thank you so much for being such an inspiration to me. All your videos have been such a big part of my life and they've even inspired me to make movie reviews of my own. Wishing you the best always.
The BIG problem for movies like this, and this seems to be the case for every damn one of these "scary movies" where they try to have the internet and social media as a main ingredient is that in EVERY SINGLE CASE, the writers seem to have NO understanding of how social media, the internet, and internet culture actually WORKS!!! It's like these writers have never been exposed to this technology or culture ever in their lives and were just told "What this technology was like and how kids use it.". It really feels like this stuff is written by non-users of the internet and social media and people who are completely out of the loop when it comes to technology and internet culture, people who maybe only use their phones to sent an email or two, but that's it.
SlewedBoot25934 wait does that really happen? I'm not gonna lie, the old pictures of Slender Man where his appendages carried him like Dr. Octopus really intrigued me. I always wanted to know what that would look like. Did it look cool?
That's too funny. I was literally just talking to my husband and I was like this is so stupid. If they were intelligent they would have made it more like a blair witch project type vibe in the woods. That would have been much better. Then a minute later, he said the same thing 😜
I saw this movie in theaters and was honestly pretty creeped out by it. The second time I watched it was on DVD with a buddy of mine and we basically had an impromptu MST3K session about how cheesy it was. I think my fav joke was "How is (Hallie) so pale if she runs track? Is it because she never turns on any freaking lights?"
James Wan is the only director who can pull off these kind of horror movies for the main stream audience without making it look too ridiculous or too pretentious.
Sharkdiver345 The fuck are you talking about? The Conjuring is one of the best horror movies of the past decade! Well received both critically and financially. Easily a cult classic that started it's own successful, horror movie Universe!
Jay The Conjuring 2 was extremely boring. Besides the painting scene with the nun, it didn't have a lot to offer. It is just the same thing all over again. Like every Blumhouse production lol
Jay I know. I am not saying it is bad for everyone, but i like Stephen King sort of movies like The Mist, where you don't know what's going to happen with an unexpected bad ending. I like it when horror movies go a step to far or when they are extremely dark. I feel like Blumhouse and James Wan are afraid to make extremely dark and depressing movies and just don't want to take horror into a scary new direction
Yesss thank you for mentioning urban legend!! That one followed screams formula of making a "who's the killer in the college campus" plz do a hilariocity review on that one!!
Halv Everytime you see Slenderman non chalantly in the background of those videos, now that's great horror. No cheap tricks just natural suspenseful build up.
I agree with Chris on it being too late to make a Slenderman movie. When I saw the first trailer, litteraly the first thing that came to my mind was "Shouldn't they have done this like five years ago instead?"
Chris, watch the "Marble Hornets" series on YT. It's the found footage Slenderman series that you wanted that's 100x better than this crap movie and it was made 10 years ago.
Rayburn Films the game isn't but the original photoshop photos the game and everything is based on was made in 2008 or 2009. I'm not sure which but around those years
SippinonMickeys yeah, I originally watched Night Minds explained series (he got me into ARGs and webseries') and now I'm going back and fully watching the videos. So I'm lucky enough that I wasn't around when everyone had to check Stephs blog and Twitter often. Although the trials seemed like a lot of fun at times. (I'm assuming you watched Night Minds explained series or someone like him)
Does anyone remember that conversation between Phoebe and Chandler in Friends when Phoebe asks why Spider-mans name isn’t Spiderman and Chandler says because it’s not his last name like Phil Spiderman. This movie title reminds me of that. I thought the name was Slenderman NOT Slender Man! But I guess he is a Slender Man so it’s referring to his slender stature. LOL.
Woulda been cooler with slender hidden in the background from the begining and maybe some reason for them to go to the woods following 8 pages to find their missing friend and maybe actually try to find the weakness like maybe leaving the woods, slower in sunlight but faster at night something to make it interesting instead of teenage yelling and acting like slender is drugs (not one wants to talk about it). feels like you cant do anything ur dead attitude they didnt even try
I LIVE for stuckmann+Flickinger colabs! YASS! Ive been binging on your colabs the last few days PRAYING for a new colab video! My prayers have been answered! 👏🙏👌👍
